  • All-state boys basketball teams for 2016-17 season

The 2016-17 all-state boys basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a week-long vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

  • 1A boys hoops Great 8 roundup: Fleming comes back to beat Front Range Baptist

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

Fleming boys basketball took a few punches, but refused to get knocked out.

The defending Class 1A state champions were playing in their fifth consecutive state tournament, even reaching the last two finals (beat Shining Mountain in 2016, lost to Holly in 2015), but a relatively young group experienced growing pains that are commonplace for youthful teams. They lost six games in a row during the regular season.

And, after reaching the tournament as the No. 6 seed with a tough draw against No. 3 Front Range Baptist, the Wildcats fell behind 11-2 to start the contest and 19-9 early in the second quarter. Then, little by little, they clawed their way back and only trailed 22-19 at halftime.

Acting as a prize fighter with experience and toughness, not to mention star power in senior guard Jaxon King (1A player of the year as junior), Fleming pulled out a gutsy 45-42 comeback over the Falcons to reach the Final 4 again. The boys joined the girls in earning their way to the semifinals in the final games of the evening.

“I think this year was the first year we’ve had both (the boys and girls) teams at the state tournament since 1983, so that was huge,” King said. “We have a lot of momentum for tomorrow. We just have to keep it rolling, both the boys and the girls.”

For the boys, defense and team play was the calling card. Finally taking their first lead of the game with 2:20 left in third, a 29-28 margin thanks to back-to-back buckets by freshman guard Brandon Williams, Fleming rode enough momentum to pull through late.

Senior Alex Vandenbark nailed a three to push the lead to 41-38 with just over two minutes left and the Wildcats made the necessary stops to seal a semifinals bid. Noah Johnson made a layup with 1.1 seconds left to cut the deficit to 45-42 and Front Range got the ball back after an out-of-bounds by Fleming. But King swatted the Falcons’ game-tying three-point attempt.

King said he wasn’t surprised the ‘Cats fell behind early. After all, an added level of pressure is at play for a team looking to defend their title.

“Being the defending state champ, there’s a big target on your back,” he noted. Everyone wants to beat the defending champ. We have a few starters that haven’t seen any varsity time in the state tournament before. We were expecting them to come out with a few nerves. I wasn’t too worried.”

The young talent did come through eventually, led by Williams, but the veterans also stepped up when needed.

“Through that adversity, the thing that helps us is I have Jaxon King, Alex Vandenbark and Matthew Tanner, just really good leaders,” coach Tom Hessler said. “They’ve been through the wars. They know what it feels like to come here and what it takes to win.”

Another magical run continues for Fleming (16-9) on Friday against Cheyenne Wells at 8:30 p.m. with a third consecutive finals appearance on the line. Front Range Baptist (20-4) will face Creede/Lake City at 1:15 in consolations.

Sophomore center Deric Woods was among the players who stood out for Front Range Baptist.

    (1) Holly 63, (8) Ouray 24

Holly had an excellent performance to kick off their quest for a second state title in three years with a 39-point victory. Senior guard Yaniel Vidal (20.9 points per game) led the Wildcats with 19 points. Backcourt mate Chandler Rushton chipped in 14.

One season after getting knocked out 63-59 by Shining Mountain in the semifinals, the Wildcats choked the life out of Ouray in outscoring the Trojans 53-16 in the final three frames. Holly nipped Fleming 33-32 in the state finals two seasons ago.

The Wildcats (23-0), featuring a tangent of athletic guards, will take on Kit Carson in the Final 4 on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Brendon Olin led Ouray with 11 points. The Trojans face Longmont Christian at 10:15 a.m. in the consolation bracket Friday.

    [divider]

    (4)Kit Carson 52, (5) Longmont Christian 47

The Wildcats rode a pair of high-scoring performances by seniors Brad Johnson (23 points) and Jaxon Crawford (22) to a Great 8 triumph.

Kit (18-5) controlled the contest most of the way with quarter leads of 18-10, 30-22 and 41-32. They lost to Shining Mountain in the Great 8 a season ago.

6-foot-6 freshman Dominic Puchino is a budding talent at center and racked up 21 points for Longmont Christian in the loss. The setback dropped the Warriors’ record to 20-5.

    [divider]

    (2) Cheyenne Wells 59, (8) Creede/Lake City 34

The Tigers ripped their way through the Miners, sealing a semifinals bid. They now have a 21-2 record.

Seniors Peyton Halde (16 points) and Kendall Pelton (14) were the primary scorers for Cheyenne Wells, a team that lost in the Final 4 in 2014. Pelton (16.4 points per game) has been a dynamic player for a Tigers team that has only lost to Holly and Kit Carson.

The Miners were led by Isaac Borchers’ 13 points. They will face Front Range Baptist in consolations at 1:15 p.m. on Friday.

    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Valor Christian boys basketball is the new No. 1 in Class 4A. The Eagles escaped Evergreen in a 54-53 win last week.

The previous top team in the CHSAANow.com 4A rankings, Pueblo West, wasn’t so lucky. The Cyclones lost to Pueblo South 67-64 after being down 34-19 at halftime. Pueblo West didn’t fall too far however, sliding to the No. 2 spot.

That Pueblo South team got some recognition for the upset as they joined the 4A poll at No. 8.

3A also added a new team to the rankings. Manual came in at No. 10 in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.

In 5A, Doherty and Grandview swapped places, with the Spartans rising from No. 7 to No. 5. Doherty won its second-straight league title after beating Rampart. Grandview dropped after its loss to No. 4 Eaglecrest.

Chatfield continued the longest win streak in 5A to hold at No. 3. The Chargers’ streak is at 18 after clinching the 5A Jeffco title against Ralston Valley.

Dawson received one first place vote as they rose from No. 9 to No. 6 in the 2A poll. The top three teams remained the same in 2A.

Crowley County entered the 2A rankings at No. 8.

In 1A, Longmont Christian moved from No. 6 to No. 4, swapping with Flagler.

Weldon Valley dropped out, making room for Primero to jump into the rankings at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final rankings of the regular season.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Lewis-Palmer jumps up in 4A poll

    Lewis-Palmer Vista Ridge boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Lewis-Palmer is making the right moves at the right time when it comes to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

After beating Sand Creek just over a week ago, the Rangers put on another impressive showing with a 65-56 win over PPAC front-runner Vista Ridge. With everyone now paying attention, Lewis-Palmer jumps four spots to land at No. 4 this week.

Pueblo West, Valor Christian and D’Evelyn all stood their ground at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Sierra also made a significant move as the Stallions are at No. 6, three spots better than last week’s poll. Mead broke into the poll this week at No. 8.

ThunderRidge remains the top team in the 5A poll and rightfully so considering the Grizzlies haven’t lost since Dec. 20 and are undefeated against Colorado teams.

Eaglecrest received two first-place votes and jumped one spot to No. 4 as a result.

Fort Collins is the lone newcomer to the poll, rounding it out at No. 4.

Resurrection Christian remains No. 1 in 3A after edging No. 4 Sterling on Friday. Colorado Springs Christian remains at No. 2 while Manitou Springs jumps one spot to No. 3.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings.

Undefeated Highland still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 2A poll. Fowler jumped three spots from a week ago, coming in at No. 7. Haxtun joins the 2A rankings at No. 8.

Holly is still the top team in 1A. The top four teams from last week’s ranking went unchanged this week.

There were some big moves however as Rocky Mountain Lutheran made a three-spot jump to No. 5 and at No. 6, Longmont Christian is four spots better than they were last week.

Kit Carson joins the 1A poll at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Pueblo West does not like falling out of the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

For the second time in three weeks, the Cyclones have regained the No. 1 spot after falling out (without a loss) of it.

Valor Christian jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 2. But that’s where most of the consistency in the 4A poll ends.

Holy Family made a five-spot jump to break into the top five and the bottom half of the poll saw three new teams. Northridge is in at No. 6, Lewis-Palmer is back in the poll at No. 8 and Sierra also makes its return at No. 9.

ThunderRidge has shown no desire to drop out of the top spot of the 5A, despite the solid play of the rest of the teams in the top-five, each of whom also held onto their spots.

Doherty re-enters the rankings at No. 7 this week, the only new team to enter the poll.

Resurrection Christian remains the No. 1 team in 3A, but Colorado Springs Christian jumps up to No. 2 thanks to a last-second with over this week’s No. 4, Manitou Springs.

At No. 10, Machebeuf is the lone newcomer in the 3A rankings.

    Dawson Highland boys basketball
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANOW.com)

Highland and Sedgwick Country remain the top two teams in the 2A rankings, but the No. 3 spot has a new look in the form of Del Norte.

The 2A poll had no new teams this week.

The poll in 1A overall looks very similar to what it was last week. Holly and Cheyenne Wells remain at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.

Sierra Grande jumped one spot to No. 3 and Rocky Mountain Lutheran also jumped a spot to come in at No. 8.

Like 2A, there were no new teams in the 1A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Doherty jumps into 5A poll

Going into the final CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings of 2015, the top teams from last week’s polls all remained in place.

And even though the top of the rankings look similar, new teams were added in all classes, giving some squads a momentum boost as the schools head into winter break.

In Class 5A, Overland came in as a unanimous choice at No. 1 fresh off winning the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.

The top six teams from last week’s 5A poll all held their place as they are playing quality basketball heading into the break. It was Chatfield who made the biggest jump, going from No. 10 to No. 7, thanks in part to an overtime win against Palmer on Thursday.

An impressive looking Doherty team cracks the rankings this week after taking down Legend last week.

In 4A, the top teams are all playing high quality basketball. Longmont posted three impressive wins this week while Valor Christian won a nail-biter against Pueblo Central, surviving Mike Ranson’s 44-point performance.

Even with the loss, the Wildcats broke back into the rankings at No. 8.

Denver South and Mead were other two newcomers in 4A, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Colorado Springs Christian remains at the top of the 3A poll. They didn’t see any official action last week, although they did compete at the City for Champions tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

There were two new additions to the 3A rankings as The Pinnacle comes in at No. 8 and Denver School of Science and Tech – Green Valley Ranch breaks in at No. 10.

Sanford received every first-place vote this week to hold their position atop the 2A rankings.

A win and a close loss to Ignacio was good enough for the voters to make Center the lone newcomer to the 2A rankings as they grabbed the No. 10 position this week.

Like all other classes, there was not a chance at the top of the 1A rankings this week as Fleming still comes in at No. 1. Longmont Christian did make quite a splash as a newcomer. Unranked last week, the Warriors came in at No. 4, even snagging a first-place vote along the way.

Front Range Baptist also broke into the 1A poll as they jump in at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Basketball committee discusses expanding state tournaments to include all teams

    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)
Might the state basketball tournaments in Class 5A and 4A expand? (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

AURORA — The basketball committee is exploring an idea which would expand the Class 4A and 5A boys and girls state tournaments to include all teams.

The committee began to discuss postseason formats because of last month’s changes to the classification structure which will even out teams in each class. They talked about keeping things as they are, but also about ways to change the format.

And during Wednesday’s meeting, at least for 5A and 4A, the idea of a totally-inclusive state tournament was popular among committee members. The format would be loosely modeled on what 1A and 2A have already implemented via regionals, but would incorporate all schools in the classification.

“We had a great discussion on the postseason format,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann, who administers basketball. “We have a very good 5A format — and a very successful format — that has been in place for over 10 years. But 5A has never addressed what might happen if the selection committee were to go away. The basketball committee wanted to address that.”

4A, meanwhile, “has struggled with a universally-accepted postseason format, and also needed to be addressed,” Borgmann said. “As the committee started looking at a variety of ideas, the concept off a format that was inclusive of all schools began to take form.”

The new CLOC structure calls for 66 teams in each classification in the 2016-18 two-year cycle. Those numbers may change slightly depending on things like play-ups, play-downs and enrollment changes among the membership.

But with that many teams, how to hold a state tournament?

The rough outline matches leagues into so-called “sectionals,” where four sectionals comprise the bracket. How teams would be placed on the bracket is yet to be discussed.

The 5A and 4A brackets would eventually pair down to a final 16 teams which would then be true-seeded.

Currently, the idea is only targeting 5A and 4A, but may expand to 3A-1A depending on feedback from the membership. (Class 2A has scheduled a meeting in September to discuss postseason format.)

Much remains to be done. CHSAA will send out a survey to member schools to gauge interest. Basketball committee members will also reach out to their respective classifications to discuss the idea, other ideas, or simply keeping things as they are.

If there’s enough to make a change, the committee will continue to work on the idea at its meeting in February 2016. From there, it would forward the idea in its report to the Legislative Council meeting in April.

If approved there, the new tournament structure would be implemented with the 2016-17 season.

    New schools placed into alignment

Five new schools were placed into regions by the committee:

    • Beth Eden Baptist (Wheat Ridge) will play in 1A’s District 8
    • Faith Baptist (Longmont) was placed in 1A’s District 4
    • Likewise, Front Range Baptist (Fort Collins) will also be in 1A’s District 4
    • Lotus School for Excellence (Aurora) will play in 2A’s District 4
    • Atlas Prep (Colorado Springs) will play in the Confluence League of 3A
