Football roundup: No. 1 Kent Denver beats No. 4 La Junta in state title rematch

Eagle Valley Kent Denver football Scott Yates

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

After failing to beat La Junta twice last year, Kent Denver needed this one. And with a late field goal, the top-ranked team in the Class 2A CHSAANow.com football poll got it.

The Sun Devils came away with a 10-7 win over the Tigers to somewhat avenge last year’s defeats, the latter of which came in the 2A state title game.

“Anytime you lose the state championship game you have a bad taste in your mouth,” Kent Denver coach Scott Yates said. “All our kids and coaches wanted to try and erase it.”

The win is the 319th for Yates, who remains tied with West Grand’s Chris Brown for the most in state history.

The Tigers (3-1 overall) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.

But the lead wouldn’t hold.

Kent Denver (4-0) was able to tie the game before halftime and the two teams came out unwilling to give each other any more points.

Still locked in a 7-7 tie, it was Kent Denver who would get the edge as Quinn Voboril kicked a late field goal which proved to be the game winner.

“We had to stop them in order to get the ball with enough time to go down the field. That created a little momentum for us,” Yates said. “It gives you an uplift and said let’s do something with it. We marched the ball down the field pretty well.”

The Sun Devils open league play next week when they hit the road and travel to Elizabeth. The Tigers also begin league play next week, hosting TCA.

8-man: (8) Hoehne 44, (2) Daypsring Christian 37

Hoehne built a 22-8 lead at halftime, but Dayspring Christian did everything possible to make up ground in the second half. But 22 points in the third quarter alone wasn’t going to cut it.

The Farmers were able to put up 22 more points in the second half and finish off the upset over 8-man’s second-ranked team.

Senior Jacob Yates had 202 yards and two touchdowns for Hoehne. Kyle Rowe also rushed for two scores, and Riley Hudson added one.

Christian Still, a freshman, tossed three touchdown passes for Dayspring Christian â€” all of them to senior Jimmy Fargo.

5A: (5) Regis Jesuit 24, (9) Highlands Ranch 0

It took Regis Jesuit almost a full 24 minutes of game time to find the end zone. But after scoring just once in the first half, the Raiders turned up the heat in the second.

They added two touchdowns and field goal to get a big win over a top-10 opponent.

1A: (3) Strasburg 14, (4) Limon 12

Strasburg handed Limon its first loss of the season on Saturday.

The Indians scored touchdown a in each the first and fourth quarters and that was all that was needed to move to 3-1 on the season.

[divider]

8-man: (9) Merino 14, (10) McClave 8

Merino remained undefeated on the year with a 14-8 win over McClave. It’s the first loss for the Cardinals, who broke into the 8-man rankings last week.

Through tragedy, Gilpin County football pulls together as a family

Gilpin County football coach Craig Ball comes from a football background and a football family.

Ball grew up in southeast Texas where he played football for Ed Peveto at Orangefield High School. Peveto is in the Southeast Texas Coaches Hall of Fame. In his fourth year as the head coach at Gilpin County, Ball brings a lot of his Texas background to the program.

He likes to say that he’s brought a piece of southeast Texas with him to the mountains of Colorado.

But that isn’t the only thing that he brought. Ball is a family man. Through his time as a high school player in Texas, a college player at Lamar University and a coach at Gilpin County, he has always had his family, specifically his parents, there to support him.

“Once my kids started growing up and getting into school, I started coaching up here,” Ball said. “So (my dad) had been to all of my games as a coach since then.”

His father James loved the games. He was there to watch Craig coach a second grade squad which featured Jack Ball. Jack is James’ grandson and Craig’s son.

This year, Jack and his friends are seniors for the Eagles. Craig calls the plays. Jack executes them. And James watched from the side.

A football family through and through.

That family was struck by tragedy in the third quarter of its 60-50 win over Simla on Sept. 9.

James suffered a heart attack during the game and passed away. He died doing what loved most at the late stage of his life. He was watching his son coach and grandson play.

“(Craig’s) father was a big fan of the team and that’s why he was there,” Gilpin County athletic director Jeff Schuessler said. “He wanted to watch those boys play. That was his thing.”

What played out for Craig was a traumatic series of events. He had gotten word that his mother, Norma, had gotten something stuck in her chest and was choking. Paramedics decided to get her to a hospital so she was transported to St. Anthony’s in Lakewood.

With Norma being James’ primary caregiver, Craig’s wife Dr. Nahanni Freeman assumed the role for the rest of the day. At 87-years-old, the sight of his wife being transported away via an ambulance was scary in its own right for James.

“That part was shocking for my dad,” Craig said.

Craig was informed of the situation, but was not pulled away from the game. Norma was in the hands of medical professionals and the game still needed to be played.

At the beginning of the third quarter, the Eagles had intercepted a Simla pass in the end zone. On the ensuing play, the ball was given to Jack on a jet sweep. He took the ball 80 yards for a touchdown. Momentum was on Gilpin’s side.

But Craig was told then that another emergency was taking place. He was told that his father had fallen.

Craig turned the offense over to former Gilpin quarterback Chase Boulter.

“He probably knew the plays better than anybody so I handed him the clipboard,” Craig said. “He called the rest of the plays for the rest of the game.”

When Craig got to the area where James had been watching the game, he noticed a crowd of about 15 people, including Gilpin superintendent Dr. David Mackenzie and several members of the local sheriff’s office.

“The paramedics had just gotten there,” Craig recalls. “At first, no one knew exactly what it was and they didn’t inform me right then. It ended up being a heart attack and he had just collapsed and was laying there. By the time I got there, the paramedics were getting to work on him, trying to resuscitate him.”

One thing that really stuck out to him in that moment was the help from the opposing side. A woman that he was only introduced to as Jodi was in the area when James collapsed.

She was doing no less than anyone else around that was trying to provide aid.

She was a total stranger who was just there to watch the game as she had rooting interest for the visiting team.

“We had a lady, and I never found out her full name, but I was introduced to her as Jodi and she had a big Simla sweatshirt on,” Craig said. “She was from Simla and she was there when my dad collapsed and she was helping.”

Even in times when life and football can be intertwined, this was a reminder that regardless of stakes, life always takes the upper hand.

During the unfolding event, Schuessler could see from his vantage point that there was yet another emergency situation. He had watched the ambulance leave with Craig’s mother, but had no idea what was going on with this second issue.

“I didn’t know that it was Craig’s dad,” Schuessler said. “I had no idea. I just kept announcing because I didn’t know exactly what was going on, I just knew we had sheriff personnel and medical personnel taking care of the situation.”

By the start of the fourth quarter, James Ball had passed away.

“As a head coach, you certainly have a lot of commitment to your team,” Craig said. “And my dad would understand if I was to still be interested in my game throughout the whole process. It’s very difficult to not hear the cheers one way or another. It ended up being a shootout at the end.”

But this was family.

Craig sent word that Jack needed to come off the field.

“He had rushed for 133 yards and he didn’t play the fourth,” Craig said. “He came down to see his granddad and say goodbye.”

The Ball family made its way down to St. Anthony’s. Norma was still being evaluated and had no knowledge of the events that had taken place when she had left the field.

Word had gotten to Craig’s assistant coaches, and therefore the team, of what had happened. Jack, Nahanni and Craig’s other son Aiden were all on-site.

Now, they had to get to the hospital and break the news to Norma and Olivia, Craig’s daughter.

“It was very emotional,” Craig said. “My mom, at first, didn’t really want to believe it. She had been his caretaker for so long and they had been married for 53 years. The idea that she wouldn’t be there when he died had never been thought of.”

To say it was a shocking day for Craig and his family would be an understatement. The following Monday, he began the process of making funeral arrangements. He took the day off from school, but returned for practice.

Jack Craig and Austin Boulter. (Photo courtesy of Craig Ball)

He has a built-in support system in the form of 21 kids that he spends time with each and every day.

And in the midst of such tragedy, Craig never lost sight of the fact that James loved those boys just as much.

Austin Boulter is Craig’s Godson. He also knew James his entire life. He ran for an inspired 328 yards in the win over Simla.

Craig got word that when everything happened, it was Manny Gomez who assumed a leadership role on the field and kept the team together.

This wasn’t just Coach Ball who lost someone. The program as a whole lost a member of its family.

“Football gives you some strength in those times,” Craig said. “You don’t have to be blood to be family and that football team is my family.”

Football roundup: Garnes leads No. 3 Eaglecrest past No. 5 Grandview

Eaglecrest Grandview football

More photos. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Victor Garnes had two receiving touchdowns, and third-ranked Eaglecrest football beat Grandview 21-14 in a big Class 5A game on Friday.

Eaglecrest is now 3-0, while Grandview moves to 2-1.

Both of Garnes’ scores came on great throws from Raptors quarterback Jalen Mergerson, a senior.

The first came on fourth-and-11, midway through the second quarter. The second was a 34-yard catch and run that saw Garnes juke out a crowd of defenders on his way to the end zone.

Kenny Wanting got Eaglecrest started with a 2-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter.

Grandview’s Aaron Harris blocked a punt that the Wolves recovered for a touchdown to cut into Eaglecrest’s lead early in the third quarter. They had possession deep in the Raptors’ territory on their next possession, but the drive stalled and the Wolves turned it over on fourth down.

Eaglecrest then went back up 21-7, and held that lead for most of the fourth quarter.

Grandview did score with 31 seconds remaining to make it a one-score game again, but Eaglecrest recovered the onside kick.

4A: (10) Pueblo West 55, (3) Pueblo South 54 (2OT)

In a wild one, Pueblo West took down their crosstown foe in two overtimes.

The game was tied at 42 after regulation â€” but Pueblo West had to rally to get to that point. South led 35-21 at the half, only to see Pueblo West tie the game at 35 in the third quarter.

South again took the lead late in the third quarter at 42-35, and West again responded with a touchdown with four minutes to play.

In overtime, West scored first, only to miss an extra point attempt. South also scored — and also missed an extra point.

South opened the second overtime with another touchdown, but again missed the extra point. West responded with a score, and the extra point was good, giving the Cyclones the win.

3A: Roosevelt 15, (3) Longmont 12

Roosevelt scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come roaring back and upset the Trojans.

The Roughriders’ defense got their team started with a safety early in the fourth quarter, and then Angelo Hurtado cut it to 12-9 with a 21-yard rushing touchdown.

Four minutes later, Roosevelt’s Trent Beall scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 14-yard rush.

Jaydon Elkins had a rushing touchdown for Longmont.

4A: (4) Windsor 40, (8) Broomfield 14

(Steve Oathout)

Windsor jumped out to a 26-0 lead at halftime, and the Wizards kept their foot on the pedal in the second half en route to the big win.

Quarterback Connor Apodaca, a senior, accounted for four total touchdowns, including two through the air.

Jaedyn Traut and Gerald Mack also had rushing scores for the Wizards.

Baseball rankings: Silver Creek returns to No. 1 in 4A

For the third time this season, Silver Creek sits atop the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

The Raptors came away with two key wins last week, one against Northridge and one against Greeley Central. They’ll finish their regular with one game against Greeley Central and two against Mountain View this week.

Mountain View was the No. 1 team in last week’s poll and sits at No. 2 this week.

Denver North is the only new team in the poll, landing at No. 8.

Pine Creek holds on to their No. 1 spot in 5A. The Eagles will see action every day this week as they close out the regular season.

Ralston Valley (No. 6) and Rocky Mountain (No. 8) are the new additions to the 5A poll this week.

Eaton remains the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A.

La Junta jumped four spots this week to land at No. 6 ahead of the Tri-Peaks League crossover games this weekend.

Brush is back in the 3A poll, taking the No. 10 spot this week.

Paonia is still undefeated and as a result, still the No. 1 team in 2A.

County Line (McClave/Wiley) jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 3 and even snagged two first-place votes along the way.

Crowley County is the only new addition to the 2A poll as the Chargers land at No. 9.

Granada hung on to the No. 1 spot in 1A.

Gilpin County broke into that poll, taking the No. 10 spot this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

With some regular seasons already over, and others winding down, these will serve as the final rankings of the regular season in all classes. Postseason brackets will be released on CHSAANow.com when they become available.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

Baseball rankings: Chatfield takes over as No. 1 in 5A

Chatfield was the big benefactor of two Regis Jesuit losses last week.

The Chargers come into this week as the new No. 1 team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com baseball poll. Monday they topped Arapahoe, and had a huge Thursday showdown with the then No. 1 Raiders.

Regis Jesuit was coming off a loss to Fairview and was looking to bounce back, but a seven-run sixth inning for the Chargers was good enough to get the win. As a result, despite losing to Bear Creek on Saturday, Chatfield sits atop the 5A rankings.

ThunderRidge made the most impressive jump of the week to land at No. 2. They were the No. 9 team in last week’s poll.

Fort Collins has played well enough that it broke into the rankings this week at No. 9 respectively.

The 4A rankings also saw a new No. 1 team emerge as D’Evelyn reclaims the top spot that Silver Creek had taken a week ago.

There were two new teams in the 4A poll as Mountain View comes in at No. 5 and Pueblo Centennial rounds out the rankings at No. 10.

The Eaton Reds remain undefeated on the year and also remain the No. 1 team in the 3A poll. The top four teams from a week ago held on to their spot this week.

The Academy was the only new team to break into the 3A rankings, landing at No. 10.

Paonia swept all four games they played last week to hold on to their No. 1 ranking in 2A.

Front Range Christian, who remains undefeated on the year at 8-0, breaks into the 2A polls at No. 9. The Falcons were the only newcomer this week.

Holly is still the No. 1 team in 1A, getting five of nine first-place votes.

Fleming jumped two spots to land at No. 2 and Gilpin County is the only new team in the 1A poll, landing at No. 8.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
