ARVADA — It took awhile, but Arvada West’s girls soccer team captured a huge victory Monday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Despite a pair of lightning delays that pushed back the original start time of 5 p.m. by more than two and a half hours, the Wildcats pushed through to grab a 2-1 victory over their rival.

“We had a wait for so long. It was a mental challenge. We pushed through it,” A-West junior Ashlyn Craig said after the game ended a little after 9 p.m. “We haven’t beat RV for a couple of years. The energy was really high.”

The last time A-West took a league victory over Ralston Valley was back during the 2016 season.

“They are all buddies and it’s a fun rivalry game,” A-West coach Troy Gette said.

Ralston Valley opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a goal by junior Kyla Rosenquist. The junior forward was able to knock in the goal after some good work in deep by Ralston Valley junior Saya Sabus.

“The girls kind of had it in their minds to keep on working hard no matter what,” Gette said of the Wildcats falling behind early. “Being as young as they are that is what they know. They work hard and let the game come to them.”

A-West answered in the 15th minute. A direct free kick wasn’t handled cleanly by Ralston Valley senior goalie Lilly VanAlsburg. Wildcat sophomore Aubrey Pixler buried the ball into the back of the net despite a ton of traffic in front.

Coming out of halftime A-West quickly took its first lead of the game. A direct free kick by Craig missed a number of bodies in front of the net before snaking into the goal. The score in the 46th minute ended up being the game-winning goal.

“I was hoping for the deflection,” Craig said on her game-winning goal. “I tried to place it for the far corner where the keeper sometimes can see it. There was a jumble in the front and it rolled right in.”

Gette has instructed Craig to fire a hard low shot toward the far post on the second set piece that yielded a goal for A-West (3-0 record, 3-0 in Class 5A Jeffco League).

“She (Craig) couldn’t have hit it better,” Gette said of the lone goal in the second half. “On set pieces like that you want to keep it playable. She did that and it worked out for us.”

Ralston Valley (1-3, 1-2) put some good pressure on A-West junior goalie Veronica Vessa in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Wildcats were able to preserve the 1-goal victory.

“Shout out to V (Vessa). She had some great saves,” Craig said.

Gette said the majority of his young team is seeing its first varsity action this season. He knows the very talented Valor Christian (3-0, 3-0) squad will be tough to knock off this season, but he knows the future is bright for the Wildcats.

“If this isn’t our year we are definitely building for something special in the future,” Gette said.

  • 5A girls volleyball: No. 8 Grandview knocks out undefeated No. 1 Mountain Vista

COLORADO SPRINGS ‐ If Mountain Vista wasn’t going to win the Class 5A girls volleyball state title, someone was going to have to beat the team eventually.

Grandview decided sooner was better than later.

The No. 8 Wolves battled to a 27-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15 win over the Golden Eagles to send the No. 1 seed home for the weekend.

“We knew we had to be disciplined,” Haley Glunz said. “We had to be sharp on our game. We knew that we weren’t going to get every point and they were going to get theirs and that we would bounce back and get ours took.”

They set a tough tone in the first set as they edged out a 27-25 win. It was just the second set that the Golden Eagles had dropped all year and it was enough to give the Wolves confidence that they could advance through the first round.

“It was huge confidence booster,” Glunz said. “It showed us that we belong here and that we can fight with the big dogs.”

Mountain Vista claimed the second set to even the match, but the Wolves were able to pull away in the final to get the biggest first-round upset in any classification.

    (2) Rampart 3, (7) Legend 0

    (Brad Cochi)

Now the top seed in the tournament, Rampart looked strong in its 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 win over Legend. Riley Simpson and Anjelina Starck combined for 25 kills to lead the Rams offensively.

Rampart fell just one set short of making the semifinals last year but boast two Division I hitters in Simpson and Starck and are hoping utilize their power and make a championship run. Starck was recently named the girls volleyball Gatorade Player of the Year but noted that winning a state championship is a major goal for her and the team this season.

    (4) Columbine 3, (5) Cherry Creek 1

Columbine took the first two sets to gain a clear edge over Cherry Creek in their first round match. The Bruins avoided the sweep with a win in the third set, but the Rebels held on to get the 25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22 win.

This is the fifth straight win for the Rebels and they still only have one loss on the year. They fell to Ralston Valley on April 20 despite Abi Nua having a game-high 22 kills. She’ll be a crucial piece for the Rebels title game hopes come Thursday morning when they return to the Broadmoor World Arena for their semifinal match with Grandview.

    (3) Ralston Valley 3, (6) Chatfield 0

Ralston Valley hadn’t dropped a match all year so there was no since in dropping one on the first night of the 5A girls volleyball state tournament. The Mustangs took care of Chatfield 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 to move into the 5A semifinals where they’ll face Rampart.

Neither Ralston Valley or Rampart has played in a state championship game so history is on the line regardless of which team comes away with the win.

The Rams and the Mustangs play at 11 a.m. Thursday.
