Boys basketball rankings: Doherty jumps into 5A poll

Legend Doherty boys basketball

Doherty boys basketball jumped into the 5A rankings this week. (Matt Daniels/MattDanPhoto.com)

Going into the final CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings of 2015, the top teams from last week’s polls all remained in place.

And even though the top of the rankings look similar, new teams were added in all classes, giving some squads a momentum boost as the schools head into winter break.

In Class 5A, Overland came in as a unanimous choice at No. 1 fresh off winning the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.

The top six teams from last week’s 5A poll all held their place as they are playing quality basketball heading into the break. It was Chatfield who made the biggest jump, going from No. 10 to No. 7, thanks in part to an overtime win against Palmer on Thursday.

An impressive looking Doherty team cracks the rankings this week after taking down Legend last week.

In 4A, the top teams are all playing high quality basketball. Longmont posted three impressive wins this week while Valor Christian won a nail-biter against Pueblo Central, surviving Mike Ranson’s 44-point performance.

Even with the loss, the Wildcats broke back into the rankings at No. 8.

Denver South and Mead were other two newcomers in 4A, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Colorado Springs Christian remains at the top of the 3A poll. They didn’t see any official action last week, although they did compete at the City for Champions tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

There were two new additions to the 3A rankings as The Pinnacle comes in at No. 8 and Denver School of Science and Tech – Green Valley Ranch breaks in at No. 10.

Sanford received every first-place vote this week to hold their position atop the 2A rankings.

A win and a close loss to Ignacio was good enough for the voters to make Center the lone newcomer to the 2A rankings as they grabbed the No. 10 position this week.

Like all other classes, there was not a chance at the top of the 1A rankings this week as Fleming still comes in at No. 1. Longmont Christian did make quite a splash as a newcomer. Unranked last week, the Warriors came in at No. 4, even snagging a first-place vote along the way.

Front Range Baptist also broke into the 1A poll as they jump in at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Complete rankings are below.

3A basketball roundup: Bayfield shocks The Pinnacle

Don’t tell Bayfield they were the No. 28 team in this years 3A boys state basketball tournament.

The Wolverines squeaked into this year’s field of 32 teams and were placed near the bottom of the pecking order. But it was they who had the last laugh Friday night. Their reward for making the tournament was to travel to No. 5 overall seed The Pinnacle.

Challenge accepted.

And when it was over and done with, the Timberwolves never stood a chance. The Wolverines pulled the 3A upset of the night with a 75-54 win to advance to the Sweet 16 where they’ll face Eaton.

This was anything but a cakewalk for the favored Mustangs. In the second quarter they were facing a 17-0 deficit, but would eventually light their fuse and go on a 47-11 run to end the game.

Sophomore Shelby Megyeri paced the Mustangs with 14 points on the night, 12 of them coming in the second half.

(22) Brush 52, (11) Kent Denver 50

The Sun Devils found themselves down by two, but had the ball with under 10 seconds to go. They couldn’t convert on the possession and the Beetdiggers advanced to the Sweet 16.

They’ll face Sterling on Saturday where it will be the fourth matchup between the two teams this year.

(25) Liberty Common 67, (8) Bennett 51

Liberty common took the court for their first ever playoff game at the 3A level Friday night. They didn’t disappoint their supporters or themselves as they convincingly knocked off Bennett to advance to the Sweet 16.

Halley Milkos scored a team-high 25 points and Kayla Rhoads added 21 of her own to help the Eagles advance to the next round.

ThunderRidge takes over as No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

ThunderRidge took down No. 1 Regis Jesuit last week, and took over the top spot in the Class 5A boys basketball poll this week.

The Grizzlies received 21 of the 22 first-place votes and amassed 219 total points in rising to the top of CHSAANow.com’s ranking. They beat Regis Jesuit 59-36 on Tuesday.

Regis dropped to No. 2. Behind them, Overand (No. 3) and Eaglecrest (No. 4) held steady while Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Rangeview jumped up four places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 and two newcomers were next — eighth-ranked Mountain Vista and No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Chaparral rounds out the 5A ranking.

There was little change to 4A, where Longmont continued to be a unanimous No. 1 selection.

In 3A, Grand Valley joined at No. 9. Faith Christian remained atop that poll.

Likewise, the No. 1 teams in 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Sangre de Cristo) also stayed the same.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These will be the final polls of the regular season.

Complete rankings are below.

Rangeview has joined this week’s Class 5A boys basketball ranking at No. 10.

The Raiders, who are riding an eight-game winning streak, totaled 18 points to crack CHSAANow.com’s ranking.

The 5A poll continued to be led by Regis Jesuit, which got 18 of the 20 first-place votes in the classification. ThunderRidge, which got the other two first-place votes, stayed put at No. 2. Those two teams play on Tuesday.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 3, leaping Eaglecrest. Chaparral rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked this week in 5A: No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Rock Canyon, No. 8 Denver East and No. 9 Fossil Ridge.

In 4A, Longmont extended its stay atop the poll. The Trojans are a unanimous pick with all 20 first-place votes following their one-point win over then-No. 2 Holy Family.

Golden returned to the No. 2 spot in 4A this week, just ahead of Holy Family, which fell to No. 3.

The 4A poll added Air Academy (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) this week.

For the third time in three weeks, there is a new No. 1 atop the 3A poll after Lutheran was upset by Jefferson Academy last week.

Faith Christian makes a return after garnering nine of the 15 first-place votes. Colorado Springs Christian, another former No. 1, got the other six first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Lutheran dropped to No. 3, while Jefferson Academy is No. 4.

That ranking added Alamosa (No. 10) this week.

Elsewhere, Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) both stayed atop their respective rankings.

The 2A poll added Sedgwick County. 1A added Kit Carson. Both are ranked tenth this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
