La Veta got a scare in its first set against Springfield. The Class 1A CHSAANow.com No. 8-ranked Longhorns grabbed an impressive 11-point win in that set, apparently setting the tone for the match.
But No. 6 La Veta bounced right back to win the next three and get a 14-25, 25-20, 25-21, 28-26 win.
La Veta moves to 6-0 on the season and look to remain undefeated when it travels to Manzaonla on Friday.
Springfield has another looming top-10 showdown on Tuesday when it heads to Holly.

Fruita Monument 3, Valor Christian 2
Riley Snyder and Dana Thomson combined for 35 kills as Fruita Monument battled back from a 2-1 deficit to beat Valor Christian in five sets.
Truth Hafey helped set up the offensive attack by totaling 37 assists.
It is the fifth-straight win for the Wildcats and just the second loss on the year for the Eagles.

Pueblo Central 3, Trinidad 2
Pueblo Central took the first set from Trinidad before dropping the next two. Forced to rally, the Wildcats won the last two tightly contested sets to come away with the match.
La Junta’s Cody Schrock. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
LA JUNTA — Jay Paolucci wasn’t going to let his teammate have all the fun this week. The La Junta junior watched as his teammate and buddy Cody Schrock took the Pueblo South Invite on Wednesday.
So Friday, on the Tigers’ home course, Paolucci decided he was going to get in the winner’s circle.
He shot a two-over-par 72, but amassed 33 points in the Stableford format to grab the win at the La Junta Invitational. Schrock also netted 33 points, but Paolucci took the win based off a scorecard tiebreaker.
“I can play a little more aggressively (in Stableford) than I can in stroke play,” Paolucci said. “I can be more aggressive with drives and wedge shots to try and make birdie.”
That approach did get him in trouble a bit as he made double-bogey on No. 4. Going two strokes or more over par results in a lost point. Take away that one hole and he was even more pleased with his overall round.
“I was happy with that,” Paolucci said. “Shooting a 72 with a double-bogey? I’ll take that all day long.”
The feeling was only made better by seeing a teammate right behind him on the leaderboard and the overall team coming away with a win at the event.
For the second time this week, Schrock’s score has been the best. But with no one matching him at Elmwood on Wednesday, he got that win rather than falling in a tiebreaker like he did on Friday.
“It’s a good feeling,” Schrock said. “Today, I was just trying to get points. I wasn’t worried about the (strokes) I was just trying to get as many points as I could. At the South tournament, I was just rolling putts in from everywhere.”
He paced himself early, scoring two birdies in his first four holes, grabbing three points apiece for them.
Third place went to Trinidad’s Lance Peters, who started his round with a double-bogey on No. 1, a two-point swing on a difference of only one stroke.
From then on, Peters was more consistent with his play and even matched Schrock’s 38 strokes on the back nine. He finished with 30 points for his round.
“In stroke play, when you have a bad hole like that, you have to get those strokes back,” Peters said. “In Stableford, you can have that hole and get pars to get those points back. So you always have to be on the attack.”
The Tigers have five tournaments left on their schedule, according to iWanamaker. The last league tournament will be at the Country Club at Woodmoor for the Colorado Springs Christian Invitational.
A win for Schrock and a team win for La Junta is giving the team a big confidence boost heading into the final stretch of the season, the time when everyone wants to be playing their best golf.
“They’re starting to peak at the right time,” La Junta coach Aaron Pearson said. “We’re a week or so from regionals and we haven’t shot well together. Today on our home course we kind of expect to, but we finally played well together.”
PEYTON — Josh Gonzales set the tone and the Peyton Panthers look to have picked up right where they left off.
And after Friday’s 42-0 win over Trinidad, the No. 5-ranked team in the Class 1A CHSAANow.com football poll isn’t just thinking another undefeated regular season. This team believes it’s capable of so much more.
“We don’t belong in the top five,” Gonzales said. “We belong in the top three or the top two.”
Gonzales, a junior running back, carried the ball just three times for 34 yards in the first half. But one of those carries went for a touchdown.
The Panthers (1-0 overall) went up 13-0 when Gonzales returned a punt 54 yards for his second touchdown of the day.
The problem for Trinidad was that no rhythm could be established. The Miners started the game with a surprise onside kick, which they recovered. They had the makings of a scoring drive, but the Peyton defense clamped down when it needed to and forced a turnover on downs.
Once the Panthers built a three-touchdown lead, it was clear that the Miners (0-1) were outmatched.
That was the theme of the night for visitors. Quarterback Josiah Portenier was often the victim of a Peyton sack. They weren’t necessarily coverage sacks as much as he just didn’t have time to let a play develop before he was swarmed by the Panthers front seven.
The Zero Week flu did bite the Panthers a little bit. Sloppy football just allowed the Miners to keep the game close through the entire first half.
“We had way too many turnovers,” Peyton coach Richard Deems said. “I think we fumbled the ball three or four times, stuff like that. Stupid penalties. Just normal stuff that kids do like forgetting to run out on the field.
The Panthers pushed the score to 21-0 on a 22-yard touchdown run from quarterback Trevor Walker right before halftime.
(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
Gonzales added a receiving touchdown in the third quarter while Gunner Saarela and Tyler Noffsinger each ran one in to secure a comfortable victory for Peyton. It wasn’t too long ago that these wins were few and far in between.
Only four years ago that Deems took over a program he described on the brink of death. The participation numbers were low and the desire to play simply wasn’t being felt in the halls of Peyton High School.
Since taking over the program, Deems has instilled a winning mentality and for 2017, the expectations are high.
“It mostly comes from our coach,” Walker said. “It’s all the motivation. It has really changed Peyton football.”
But a coach can only preach so much. The message has to be received by the players and in order for consistent success to happen, the players have to buy into the program year in and year out.
Deems doesn’t think his players are shy about doing what they need to in order to achieve results.
“They’ve been working hard for a long time and it’s starting to come together now,” he said. “People better recognize that Peyton is here and we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with for a long time.”
Heritage boys golf had three top-10 finishers to win the Continental League tournament at Lone Tree Golf Club.
“I think the team played well today overall,” Heritage coach Nicole Poulos said. “It feels like their hard work and preparation that they did in the offseason is starting to pay off.”
Paced by Sam Blackwood’s first-place finish at one-over, the Eagles shot +25 to beat Regis Jesuit (+31), ThunderRidge (+37) and Highlands Ranch (+43).
“He’s started the season pretty strong,” Poulos said on Blackwood, who has been on varsity since he was a freshman. “He’s gone above and beyond my expectations.”
The Eagles’ Ben Carrington and Drew Downard finished tied for seventh and tied for ninth, respectively.
“It’s exciting to see these five guys,” Poulos said. “They encourage each other and they’re all friends, but they push each other to be better.
“I think we’re in one of the toughest leagues and it’s always a grind. It’s exciting.”
Highlands Ranch’s Andrew Davis birdied his final hole to match Blackwood at the top of the leaderboard.
Calvin McCoy finished a stroke behind the two to give Regis Jesuit a third place individual finish.

Pueblo County turns in huge effort to cruise by Cyclone Invite field
Pueblo County’s score at the Cyclone Invite of 30-over was 44 strokes better than the second place finisher, Pueblo Central, and 57 better than the next closest team.
The Hornets had the top three individual scores.
Andrew Egan led the field with a score of two-over, followed by Anthony Romero and Brock Rodrigues.

Lamar wins Florence Husky Invite
Lance Peters won the individual field at the Husky Invite for Trinidad, but it was Lamar who turned in a consistent team effort for the win.
The team shot 11-over with scores of one-over from Jimmy Clark, Brock Reedy’s three-over and a +7 from Dylan McTaggart.

Jonathan Andreatta, right. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
DENVER — Jonathan Andreatta’s quest for redemption took all of 50 seconds to get underway.
After failing to capture his third state title last season, the John Mall senior was all business in the first round of the Class 2A state wrestling tournament. He beat Cheyenne Wells’ Jade Cozart in less than a minute to advance to the second round, which will begin on Friday.
“I just wanted to get out there and get the pin,” Andreatta said. “I wanted to get rested up for tomorrow.”
He’s coming off a disappointing loss to Quenton Montague in last year’s 120-final. He hasn’t competed at Pepsi Center since that loss, and walking around the catacombs did bring back some tough memories of that defeat.
“Walking through these halls, I’ve had some recurring nightmares,” he said. “That kind of sucked, but I’ve practically forgotten about that and I’m ready for this year.”
And he has shown that on the mat. Andreatta’s loss in that state title match is his last loss in high school competition.
When looking to get back to that top spot on the podium, he came into the 2016-17 season tackling only the obstacle directly in front of him.
“I’m just focused on the quarterfinals,” he said. “I’m just taking it one match at a time. It’s just another day.”
He’ll be back on the mat Friday at 9:30 a.m., taking on Cameron Holmes from Wiggins. Holmes advanced with a 15-4 major decision over Chris Lovato from Hotchkiss.

Pin stats
Paonia’s Trevor Smith had the fastest pin of the 2A/3A prelims — it took him 10 seconds to win his first-round match in the 2A 285-pound bracket.
Rocky Ford’s Jacob Rodriguez had the first match of the day at 2A 106 pounds, and he made it a short one. The senior, a two-time champion, pinned Rye’s Zachary Ruiz in 14 seconds.
Rodriguez’s teammate, Carlos Magdaleno, pinned his opponent in 15 seconds at 160 pounds.
One other wrestler, Trenton Armintrout of Norwood/Nucla, had a pin in less than 20 seconds. He won his first-round match in 19 seconds.
Trinidad’s Jesus Diaz had the fastest pin in 3A’s first round, winning in 27 seconds.
There were a total of 100 pins in during the 2A/3A prelims, including 27 that happened in less than a minute.
Meeker and Paonia each had seven pins as a team.

Natalie Benavides of Del Norte, the lone female qualifier at the state tournament this season, was pinned in her first-round match by Meeker’s Sheridan Harvey. She moves to Friday’s consolation round. Benavides is the eighth girl to ever qualify for the state tournament.
Platte Valley leads the 3A team race after the prelims with 21 points. Defending champion Valley is in second with 19.5, following by Jefferson (19). La Junta and Sheridan are tied in fourth with 16 points.
Rocky Ford is out front in the 2A standings, leading with 37.5 points. Meeker (30) is second, followed by Paonia (28), John Mall (26) and Fowler (20).
Alamosa’s Isaiah Delacerda, wrestling in 3A’s 113-pound division, began his quest for a third title with a pin of Fort Lupton’s Derrian Jaramillo in 1:35.
Fort Lupton’s Jody Sandoval II pinned Eaton’s Jackson Contreras in 33 seconds at 3A 126. Sandoval is a two-time champion.
The 285-pound bracket in 3A figures to be highly competitive. Among the field: Mullen’s Sam Deseriere, a returning champion who is unbeaten; Sheridan’s Ricky Ayala, another returning champion; and Bayfield’s Sam Westbrook, another unbeaten. All three won their first-round matches.
Each of the 11 returning champions and four unbeaten wrestlers in 2A and 3A won their first-round matches.
