No. 5 Dakota Ridge football clips Vista Ridge

LAKEWOOD — Dakota Ridge junior Colin Stuhr had the ‘special’ play of the game late Friday afternoon at Jeffco Stadium.

Stuhr blocked the punt of Vista Ridge junior Christopher Livingstone with the Wolves punting from their own 26-yard line late in the first half. The defensive back picked up the loose ball and preceded to return it six yards into the end zone for the special team score.

“I went right through and blocked the ball,” Stuhr said. “I was lucky that the ball was just lying there and I could pick it up and score.”

The block, scoop and score gave Dakota Ridge — No. 5 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A football rankings — a 17-7 lead going into halftime. The Eagles (3-0 record) held on with a 41-21 victory.

“He (Stuhr) had a heck of a game,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “He is a disrupter for us for sure. That blocked punt and then to pick it up and score was big. It went from a tight game to giving us some breathing room.”

After Vista Ridge took a 7-0 lead on a 41-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Brayden Dorman to junior Keyon Burris midway through the first quarter, Dakota Ridge scored 17 unanswered points.

Junior running back Sean McNamara capped up a 75-yard touchdown drive for the Eagles with a 1-yard touchdown run. On the next Dakota Ridge possession, Max Hart gave the Eagles their first lead of 10-7 with a 43-yard field goal.

Four minutes later the huge special teams play by Stuhr increased the lead to 17-7

A bad snap over the head on Livingstone set up the lone score of the third quarter. Dakota Ridge took over on Vista Ridge’s 6-yard line. McNamara bulled into the end zone for his second touchdown on a 3-yard run to put the Eagles up 24-7.

The Eagles’ defense put good pressure on Dorman all night. Dakota Ridge sacked the young Vista Ridge quarterback four times in the first quarter alone.

“We wanted to rattle the young kid,” Woitalewicz said of getting early pressure on Dorman. “I think the first five or six plays they didn’t have a positive play from scrimmage.”

Stuhr all but sealed the victory on the first play of the fourth quarter. Stuhr intercepted Dorman with the Wolves backed up to their own end zone. The turnover set up the Eagles on Vista Ridge’s 11-yard line. It looked like he might have a chance for a defensive score, but it wasn’t meant to be as he slipped and fell around the 10-yard line.

“I was definitely thinking about it,” Stuhr said of having the chance for a special team and defensive touchdown. “It sucked to slip and fall down.”

McNamara would stroll into the end zone for his third score with 9:57 left to put Dakota Ridge up 31-7.

The second half wasn’t a thing of beauty. Penalties on both sides and several dropped passes made for the game to last nearly three hours.

“It was an ugly 41-21 win, but we’ll take it,” Woitalewicz said. “I’m going to tell the team we’ll take the win, but we’ve got to play better than that.”

Dakota Ridge has a good test against No. 7 Ponderosa (1-2) next Friday night at EchoPark Stadium in Parker. The Mustangs will be coming off a bye week after edging No. 9 Windsor on Sept. 13 in an early top-10 4A match-up.

“Ponderosa kind of put it on us last year,” Woitalewicz said referring to the Mustangs defeating Dakota Ridge 41-10 last season. “We’ll spend sometime talking about that for sure. They are a great program.”

Vista Ridge (1-2) finally has its home opener next week against Rampart on Friday, Sept. 27, in Colorado Springs. The Wolves started the season with three straight road games, including two trips to Jeffco Stadium having played 4A Jeffco’s Bear Creek and Dakota Ridge.

Arvada West, Swink and Regis Jesuit returning defensive football stars in 2019

(Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Monday marked the official start of the 2019 fall sports season as boys golf teams took to driving ranges and putting greens to start refining their games.

This means the start for team sports is right around the corner. As we have all summer, we have taken a look at stat leaders from a year ago that will be returning to their sports this season. Last week we highlighted the returning offensive stars on the football field. This week, it’s onto the defense.

As teams get closer to strapping on the pads for real, here is a look at some names to watch on the defensive side of the ball.

Tackles

Arvada West’s Elijah Olson was nothing short of ball hawk last year. His 153 were good enough to place him fifth in the state across all classifications. He returns in 2019 as the top tackler both in the state and in Class 5A. Fossil Ridge’s Caden Dollar and Lakewood’s Luke Hittle (both incoming juniors) also recorded solid numbers last year, totaling 119 and 116 tackles, respectively.

In 4A, Montrose’s Cole Simmons made 144 tackles last year. Ponderosa’s Ben Beecher wasn’t far behind with 124 but a big name to watch will be Greeley Central’s Yahir Chairez-Salazar who fifth in the classification with 116 tackles. Chairez-Salazar will be a sophomore in 2019.

Heavy tackling numbers weren’t just reserved for the large schools. Merino’s Trent Elliott recorded 143 of them as just a sophomore which tops all returning 8-man players. In 6-man, Cheyenne Wells’ Quade Pelton made 141 tackles proving himself as one of the top defensive players in a classification known more for heavy offensive numbers.

Mead’s Devon Edwards led all returning 3A players with 147 tackles in 2018. Platte Valley’s Josh Yancey was best among 2A returners with 117 and Monte Vista’s Cobi Garcia totaled 116 to top all 1A players coming back in 2019.

Sacks

Across all classifications, no player that’s returning this year registered more sacks than Swink’s Noah Zumwalt. His 14 from last season ranked sixth in the entire state and he is back in 2019 to once again terrorize 8-man quarterbacks.

The 6-man class has a pair of pass rushers that are looking to put up solid numbers once again this fall. Stratton/Liberty’s Trevor Frank recorded 11 sacks last year which ranked him No. 3 in the class. Fleming’s Brady Kuntz was right behind him with 10.

Cherokee Trail’s Kobe Thompson recorded 11, leading all 5A players returning in 2019. ThunderRidge’s Kaden Stewart was just a half-sack away from tying Thompson’s 11.

Green Mountain’s Will Banks and Pueblo East’s Brandon Hall each had eight sacks to lead the pack of 3A players returning in 2019.

The 4A class had three players match those eight sacks. Vista Ridge’s Emmanuel Taylor, Air Academy’s Aidan Diller and Standley Lake’s Jaren Cosby are all anxious to get after opposing quarterbacks this fall.

Resurrection Christian’s Tanner Applebee and Alamosa’s Cash Mueller each recorded seven sacks last season to lead all 2A returners.

Colorado Springs Christian’s Rian Chavez had 6.5 sacks last year and will enter the season as 1A’s biggest pass rushing threat.

Interceptions

In 2018, Regis Jesuit’s Bryce Parson’s subscribed to the theory that the opposing team can’t score if it doesn’t have the ball. He picked off 10 passes last year and will enter the 2019 season as the only player to record double-digit interception numbers a year ago.

He was nearly matched by Palmer Ridge’s Kaden Dudley who picked off nine passes while helping the Bears win the 3A state title. His defensive output will be challenged by Mead’s Trey Ward who grabbed eight interceptions last year.

Lamar’s Damian Ramos and Bishop Machebeuf’s Jack Farmer will each be back this year after picking off eight passes in 2A. They were tied for second in the category across the entire class last year making them a big threat should opposing teams take to the air with them on the field.

Dove Creek’s Gauge Thompson led all 8-man returners with seven picks and that number was matched in 6-man by Stratton/Liberty’s Jaret Lichty.

Jefferon’s Devon Kemp and Holyoke’s Luis Chafino each picked off six passes to top 1A’s returning players.

Interceptions were spread around 4A as three players who will take the field in 2019 pulled down five of them. Gateway’s Lanier Deruso, Rampart’s Cale Cormaney and Montrose’s Aaron Dietrich will look to defend the skies once again this fall.

Vista Ridge names Jason Cauley new football coach

(Photo courtesy of Vista Ridge athletics)

Vista Ridge has found its new football coach. On Friday, athletic director Sam Baldwin confirmed to CHSAANow.com that Jason Cauley will command the Wolves’ sideline next fall.

Cauley spent one year at Scottsdale Christian in Arizona and was looking for the right place for his family to live. He looked at Colorado Springs and when the Vista Ridge job came open, he jumped at the chance.

“Originally I was just looking in the area of Colorado Springs,” Cauley said. “I saw it was a newer school, a bigger school and I liked the demographics of it. It was a great opportunity for my family as well to be a part of that community.”

Cauley’s Scottsdale team went 7-4 last season, but they scored an average of nearly 40 points per game. He made no secret of the fact that he intends for his version of the Wolves to play at a high tempo and put points on the board often.

“They’re going to play fast,” he said. “I’m an offensive guy, but I know defense wins championships. It’s exciting to me and I love putting pressure on opposing defenses.”

Cauley originally grew up in Alabama and cites former University of Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez as a major influence of his coaching systems.

Vista Ridge announces it is searching for new football coach

Vista Ridge football team

(Josh Watt/CHSAANow.com)

Jerimi Calip will not be returning as the football coach at Vista Ridge High School. District 49 announced on Thursday that the school will begin a search to find a new head coach.

Calip took over as the coach in 2014 and found immediate success on the field with the Wolves. His best season at Vista Ridge came in 2015 when the team went 9-1 in the regular season and won the Class 4A Foothills league title.

In 2017, Calip and the Wolves advanced to the second round of the 4A playoffs before losing to eventual champion Pueblo South.

Calip was 33-22 overall in five years at Vista Ridge.

The district says that the school will begin the search for a new coach immediately. Until a hire has been made, the assistants will run the Wolves through the spring football program.

All-state football teams for the 2018 season

The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
