  • Defending champs open as No. 1 teams in girls soccer’s preseason polls

Defending champions are on top of three of CHSAANow.com’s four preseason girls soccer rankings. The fourth? Well, it’s a new classification this season.

Columbine (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A) are all coming off of titles last season, and all opened the year at No. 1 when the poll was released on Monday.

Front Range Christian leads the first-ever 2A poll. The Falcons made the 3A state tournament field last season.

In 5A, Columbine got four of the 10 first-place votes to edge No. 2 Mountain Vista. Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon (No. 3) and Pine Creek (No. 5) each received two first-place votes.

Ralston Valley, last year’s runner-up, is No. 4 in 5A’s preseason poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Niwot names Hollingsworth new football coach

Niwot has hired Dylan Hollingsworth as its new football coach, athletic director Chase McBride said on Tuesday.

Hollingsworth has been the head coach at Summit over the past 10 seasons.

“With over 20 years of coaching experience, coach Hollingsworth has the necessary tools to be successful at Niwot High School,” McBride wrote in an email.

Hollingsworth went 53-51 at Summit, taking over just prior to the 2005 season. His Tigers went 1-9 in Class 3A last season.

Niwot went 0-10 under former coach Josh Brewer last season. The Cougars, also a 3A program, haven’t won in 16 games.

They are expected to return key contributors at all skill positions next season.

Hollingsworth is a native of Jackson, Wyo., and played college football at Chadron State (Neb.).

  • Niwot’s Drake hits nearly full-court buzzer beater against Mountain View

Niwot senior Jonny Drake hit a one-handed buzzer-beater from way beyond halfcourt on Tuesday.

With 1.6 seconds left in the first half of Niwot’s boys basketball game against Mountain View, Miller took an inbound pass from the sideline opposite of the benches. Without dribbling, he heaved the ball with his right hand from a spot two feet beyond the opponent’s free-throw line.

The shot hit the back of the rim and dropped in — and stunned the crowd. It took them a moment or two to realize what happened before they erupted.

The 3-pointer cut into Mountain View’s lead to make it 21-18 at halftime, and Niwot went on to win 44-39.

    Watch the shot here:

  • Photos: Fairview boys basketball runs past Niwot

BOULDER — Fairview boys basketball unleashed a barrage of 3-pointers to run past Niwot, 63-41, in the first round of the Fairview Festival on Monday night.

Fairview took off with an 28-4 run after it was a two-point game in the second quarter. Their big lead was largely due to the 10 3-pointers they made, including six during their run.

Chris Arehart netted 20 points for Fairview, while Niwot’s Ryan Kannegieter finished with 18.

The Knights will play Greeley West in the semifinal matchup on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Niwot will face Aurora Central in the consolation bracket on Wednesay at 5 p.m.

  • Niwot HS group wins National Anthem contest

A choral group comprised of five seniors from Niwot High School were named the winners of CHSAA’s National Anthem Contest on Friday.

Together, they will sing the national anthem prior to the Class 4A and 5A football championship games at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Nov. 29.

“We are looking forward to seeing them perform,” said Harry Waterman, CHSAA assistant commissioner who administers football.

The group — Katie Gillett, Joe Castinado, Kenny Wilson, Steven Schaetzl, and Abrianna Judson — were named finalists on Thursday after finishing in the top three of a vote among 10 semifinalists. More than 23,000 votes were cast in the contest.

On Friday, the CHSAA staff selected the choral group as the winner of the contest.
