  • Football roundup: Pueblo East upsets No. 4 Longmont

Pueblo East trailed Longmont 11-0 after the first quarter. The Eagles, a Class 3A program, went on to storm back and upset Longmont 41-25, ranked No. 4 in the preseason 4A poll.

    Yes, it was somewhat stunning.

Pueblo East scored 28 unanswered points spanning the second and third quarters, and never really looked back afterward. Manuel Arellano kick-started the comeback with his 15-yard interception return with 5:34 to play in the second quarter.

At the end of the night, six different players had scored touchdowns for Pueblo East.

Longmont got a 95-yard kick return from Eli Sullivan which made it 28-18 in the third quarter, but it didn’t turn the momentum.

    5A: (1) Valor Christian 61, Bonneville (Idaho) 20

The five-time defending champions had what amounted to a scoring party on the road.

It was 28-0 after the first quarter and 54-7 at halftime. Sophomore Dylan McCaffrey threw three touchdown passes — two to Ben Waters — Eric Lee Jr. had a 55-yard touchdown on a reverse, and senior Parker Courier threw for a touchdowns and ran for another. Ben Smith also threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Valor’s defense also had a safety and an interception return for a score (Gabe Kortz).

The Eagles open in-state play at Pomona next Thursday.

    4A: (1) Pine Creek 49, (9) Pueblo Centennial 12

Another defending champion, these Eagles of the 4A variety, also rolled in its opener.

Pine Creek raced out to a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter and went on to hold a lead of 42-6 later in the frame.

Josh Odom had five rushing scores for the Eagles, and Ryan Carlos also had one.

Tommy Lazzaro had a 33-yard touchdown pass to JoJo Domann.

    3A: (2) Delta 27, (7) The Classical Academy 22

In perhaps the game of the night which featured five lead changes or ties, Delta outlasted The Classical Academy.

Delta had leads of 7-0 and 13-7 but TCA battled back to tie it both times. The Panthers finally took the lead for good when they went up 20-13 (and later 27-16), but the Titans rallied to make it a five-point game with 19 seconds left in the third quarter.

TCA missed two field goals in the fourth quarter and drove down to Delta’s 19 with 1:36 to play, but couldn’t convert on fourth down.

Jonathan Ponce had two touchdowns for Delta, while Tristian Brown had one.

Austin Bervig threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for The Classical Academy. Chuck Calvert had 144 receiving yards and a touchdown. Nick DeRay had 141 and a score.

  • Delta football looks to carry over last season’s high-powered attack

Delta football spent most of 2013 lighting up the scoreboard on their way to a 9-4 record and the Class 3A state semifinals, where they fell to eventual runner-up Silver Creek 28-17.

Though they came oh-so-close last season, the good news for the Panthers, and head coach Ben Johnson, is that the team has plenty of talent returning from an offense that averaged over 35 points per-game during the regular season.

That doesn’t mean, according to coach Johnson, the road can’t and won’t get bumpy — especially in the early going.

“We’ve got a lot of good kids returning, but I think our schedule’s very tough. We open up with (The Classical Academy) and then we have Montrose,” said Johnson, who’s in his sixth season at Delta. “The most important thing is to just get through our schedule and get into the playoffs, and then anything can happen there.”

Delta will be led by returning senior quarterback Cade Gafford, a three-sport athlete who tossed 25 touchdowns versus just five interceptions last season. Gafford will be without all-state wide out Ryan Whiteside, who pulled down 76 catches for 1213 yards as a senior last season — but Johnson already believes he has a good candidate in mind to replace Whiteside’s production.

“Gafford threw for like 2,300 yards last year and had a really good year,” Johnson said. “We do have some good receivers. We have a six-foot-five receiver, senior Eian Baier, who I think is very good.”

Baier caught 10 passes for 147 yards as a junior last year.

Johnson doesn’t see the Panthers as a one-dimensional offense either — running back Johnathan Ponce, who rushed for 1,702 yards and led the team in all-purpose yards, returns for his junior season. Paving the way for Ponce will be big senior left tackle Marcus Garcia.

Together with Gafford, Ponce and Garcia make up what Johnson calls, “our big three," and compromise the backbone of what looks to be another potent Panthers’ attack.

In all, Johnson envisions a versatile game-plan capable of putting up points anyway possible — just like last season.

“We really try and be very balanced. We want to throw the ball, we want to run the ball, and keep teams’ off-balance,” said Johnson. “If they load the box we’ll throw it, if they play off we’ll run it.”

That kind of diversity pays off come playoff time.

The 3A state football playoffs are wild — six out of eight playoff teams were upset by a lower seed in the first round alone last year — so it pays to be able to put points on the board in every possible way. After two straight seasons with a winning record, and after coming within inches of playing for a championship in 2013, Johnson just hopes his team gets another chance to reach the summit in 2014.

“We have a pretty experienced group, so we just want to make sure we get our chance to get in (to the playoffs) and try to do some good things," he said.

  • Defending champs rule preseason football rankings

    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)
Valor Christian is the preseason No. 1 in 5A. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Defending champions head six of football’s seven preseason CHSAANow.com rankings, which were unveiled Monday morning.

The lone exception is Lutheran in Class 3A — which saw both its champion (Coronado) and runner-up (Silver Creek) move up to 4A this cycle.

In fact, that ranking was also the most split of any other, with both Lutheran and preseason No. 2 Delta both getting three first-place votes. Lutheran got the No. 1 nod with 65 total points. Delta had 53 points.

Lutheran was eliminated in the first round of the 3A playoffs last season, while Delta made the semifinals. Lutheran is entering its first season under new coach Blair Hubbard, formerly of Faith Christian.

Valor Christian, a five-time defending champion across three classifications, opens up as No. 1 in Class 5A for the second year in a row. The Eagles topped Fairview to win the 5A title last season.

Cherry Creek, a quarterfinalist a year ago, is No. 2 in 5A. Cherokee Trail is ranked third, Pomona is fourth and Columbine is fifth.

Chatfield begins the season as No. 6, Regis Jesuit is No. 7, Grandview is No. 8, Ralston Valley is No. 9 and Fairview rounds out the preseason poll.

Among those receiving votes in 5A were ThunderRidge, Overland, newcomer Monarch and Legend.

In 4A, Pine Creek begins as the No. 1 team. The Eagles beat Montrose in last year’s title game. Montrose is No. 2 in the ranking.

Other preseason No. 1 teams are Platte Valley (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Stratton/Liberty (6-man).

The rankings are voted upon by coaches and select media members, and are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, rankings will be released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • 5A, 4A and 3A district baseball fields released

    Ralston Valley Chatfield baseball
Chatfield is the No. 1 seed in 5A baseball’s district bracket. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

AURORA — Chatfield, Montrose and Eaton are the top seeds in their respective classifications for baseball’s district rounds.

The 32-team fields for 5A, 4A and 3A were released on Wednesday. In 4A and 5A, seeds were determined in large part by the final Wild Card point standings. Class 3A has a seeding committee.

The district format has the top eight seeds in each classification hosting four-team pods. Each district will play three games this Saturday, with the championship at 3 p.m. Winners of each district move on to their respective state tournaments.

Chatfield had been at the head of 5A’s Wild Card points for much of the season. The Chargers will host No. 32 Doherty, No. 16 Pine Creek and No. 17 Central (G.J.).

Regis Jesuit got 5A’s No. 2 seed, Fairview is No. 3, Columbine is No. 4 and Mountain Vista is No. 5. Also hosting districts are No. 6 Arvada West, No. 7 Rocky Mountain and No. 8 Cherry Creek.

See the full 5A brackets here.

Like Chatfield, Montrose has been atop 4A’s Wild Card points most of the year. The Indians are set to host No. 32 Coronado in the first round. No. 16 Erie and No. 17 Palmer Ridge will play in that district’s other first-round game.

4A’s other district hosts are No. 2 Windsor, No. 3 Valor Christian, No. 4 Delta, No. 5 Pueblo East, No. 6 Wheat Ridge, No. 7 Durango and No. 8 Evergreen.

See the full 4A brackets here.

Eaton heads the 3A field. The Reds draw No. 32 Denver Science & Tech in the first round, and will also host No. 16 St. Mary’s and No. 17 Brush in their district.

Also hosting in 3A are No. 2 Holy Family, No. 3 Faith Christian, No. 4 Lamar, No. 5 Bayfield, No. 6 Cedaredge, No. 7 Sterling and No. 8 Alamosa.

See the full 3A brackets here.

2A’s state bracket is due out Sunday. The 1A regional and state tournament kicks off on Saturday.

  • Regis Jesut new No. 1 atop 5A baseball poll

    Regis Jesuit ThunderRidge baseball
Regis Jesuit is No. 1 in this week’s 5A baseball ranking. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

For the second consecutive week, there’s a new team atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball ranking. This time, Regis Jesuit has ascended to the top.

The Raiders, now 14-3, went 3-0 last week — including a 7-5 win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge. They are now 9-0 in the always tough Continental League, and are riding an 11-game winning streak.

Fairview actually received the same amount of first-place votes (six) that Regis Jesuit did, but remained at No. 2 with 125 overall points to the Raiders’ 137. The Knights are now 16-1 — 13-0 against in-state teams.

Columbine stayed at No. 3 after going 2-1 last week. Included was a 12-6 win over Chatfield, which at the time was ranked No. 1. But the Rebels also dropped a game to Arvada West, which had an amazing week with wins over the Nos. 1, 3 and 8 teams.

Arvada West jumped into the rankings at No. 6, just behind No. 5 Chatfield and No. 4 Mountain Vista.

ThunderRidge dropped to No. 7, Rocky Mountain is No. 8 and Chaparral is No. 9. Cherry Creek rejoined the poll at No. 10.

There are also new teams atop the 3A and 2A polls. In 3A, Eaton received nine of the 10 first-place votes to overtake Holy Family, which dropped to No. 2. In 2A, Resurrection Christian got five of the seven first-place votes and took over for Swink, which also fell to No. 2.

Windsor retained its spot atop the 4A ranking, and Stratton held firm atop 1A.

The 4A poll added Pueblo East at No. 9, and also saw Lewis-Palmer move from No. 5 to No. 3, and Evergreen go from No. 7 to No. 4.

3A added Bayfield (No. 8), while 2A added Limon (No. 9) and Lyons (No. 10).

With the regular season ending Tuesday, these rankings will serve as the final poll of the regular season.
