Turns out a win over a No. 1 team does help you move up to the top spot.

Arickaree/Woodlin, No. 2 in CHSAANow’s 6-man football poll last week, moved up to No. 1 this week following its 60-30 win over Stratton/Liberty on Friday night.

Coach David Saffer was expecting the move after the game on Friday.

"We’ve got a target on our backs," he told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. "We’ve just got to stay focused and keep working."

Saffer’s squad was the only new No. 1 team this week. Valor Christian (5A), Pine Creek (4A), Lutheran (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Dayspring Christian (8-man) all held firm atop their respective rankings.

Valor held on to the top spot despite its loss to Chandler (Ariz.). But the Eagles are no longer a unanimous selection: they received 13 of the 18 first-place votes this week.

No. 2 Pomona, No. 3 Grandview and No. 4 Ralston Valley — which got three — also received first-place votes in 5A this week. Fairview rounds out the top five after bumping up one spot.

Regis Jesuit is sixth, Cherry Creek fell to seventh following its loss to Jordan (Utah), Overland moved up to eighth and Cherokee Trail fell to No. 9 after losing to Regis Jesuit. Doherty is the lone newcomer in 5A this week, and joins at No. 10.

Among the biggest movers this week was Fort Collins, which jumped up from No. 9 to No. 5 in the 4A poll following its win over Windsor last week.

The 4A ranking added Pueblo Centennial (No. 10), 3A added Berthoud (also No. 10) and St. Mary’s joined 2A (No. 9). In 1A, newcomer Rye is No. 10, and 6-man has two new teams this week: No. 9 Hanover and No. 10 Weldon Valley.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Rampart tops preseason 5A volleyball ranking

    State volleyball
Lewis-Palmer, the defending 4A volleyball champion, heads the preseason ranking in that class. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Rampart, Lewis-Palmer, Manitou Springs, Resurrection Christian and Fleming are the preseason No. 1 volleyball teams in their respective classifications.

CHSAANow.com’s preseason poll was released on Monday, and three of last year’s champions are atop the rankings. Those are Lewis-Palmer, Resurrection Christian and Fleming.

Rampart, which received eight of the 11 first-place votes, heads the Class 5A poll. The Rams made the state tournament last season, where they went 1-1 in pool play. They return a number of top players from that team.

Cherokee Trail is No. 2 to start the year, and is followed by No. 3 Fossil Ridge, No. 4 Grandview — the defending champion — and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Pine Creek is sixth, Eaglecrest is seventh, Legend is eighth, Arapahoe is ninth and Mountain Vista rounds out the ranking.

Lewis-Palmer heads 4A. Ponderosa is No. 2, and Air Academy, last year’s runner-up, is third.

Manitou Springs is on top of the 3A ranking, just ahead of defending champ Eaton. Manitou was runner-up last season.

Resurrection Christian leads 2A, while Fleming is on top of 1A.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

  • St. Mary’s girls soccer advances to state semis with win over Coal Ridge

    (Dan Mohrmann)
    (Dan Mohrmann)

COLORADO SPRINGS – Maleia Lark’s goal with 7:31 left in the first half proved to be the game-winner as No. 3 St. Mary’s beat Coal Ridge 4-1 in the 3A girls soccer playoffs Wednesday night.

But it was Jordan Curley’s shot from about 25 yards out that broke the spirit of the Titans and allowed the Pirates to play ball control offense in the second half as they advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.

“We’ve had some fast starts, but in the last three or four games against quality opponents we’ve had slow starts where we’ve had to counter attack,” St. Mary’s coach Gregg Braha. “I thought for a while it was a little sluggish, we were trying to possess the ball.”

Neither team was able to solidify control early in the match. The Pirates were able to control possession more, but it was Coal Ridge that was creating more opportunities to get on the scoreboard first.

The best chance came when midfielder Paige Ryan turned a steal into a fast break. She passed the ball up to forward Amanda Wenzel who was able to get back to Ryan who was crashing the net. Ryan’s shot was successfully defended by St. Mary’s keeper, Tess Thomas.

After that, neither offense appeared to find a rhythm until the 31st minute when the Pirates were finally able to get into the Titan’s zone and crowd the goal box. Michelle Moure’ took advantage of a rebound that fell right in front of her and drilled home a shot to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

“Honestly, it was huge; it was at that point in the game where you had to score just to get some momentum going,” Moure’ said. “It definitely picked up or speed because we got a quick goal from Maleia (shortly) after.”

Less than two minutes after Moure’ broke the 0-0 tie, the Pirates found the goal again as Kylie Cleary found Lark with a crossing pass, allowing her to successfully put the ball past Titans’ keeper Brooke Esgar. With a 2-0 lead, the Pirates appeared to be in cruise control to move on to the state semifinals.

“I told the girls not to react, but to respond and there’s a difference there,” Titans’ coach Micah Herron said. “We got one quick back and for about eight to 10 minutes was our window to close on it.”

The Titans would finally get on the board with some fancy footwork from Ryan. With Coal Ridge on a breakaway Ryan was on the receiving end of a pass that she merely redirected ever so slightly, leaving Thomas off-balance and allowing the ball to get into the net. With just under three and a half minutes left in the first half, Coal Ridge had cut the Pirates lead in half.

But the momentum wouldn’t last long. With time running out in the first half the ball had rolled out of bounds with possession going to the Pirates. Curley threw the ball in and instantly received it back. Without hesitation she took aim at the goal and lofted the ball over Esgar’s head to score with 12.8 seconds left regaining a two-goal lead for St. Mary’s and putting the proverbial nail into the Titans’ coffin.

“I’m going to be honest, I was going for a cross,” Curley said. “I kind of saw the open far-post of the goal and decided to try for it and it went in.”

Emily Loof added one more goal for the Pirates with just under 10 seconds remaining to get the St. Mary’s crowd going and give them the 4-1 win and a berth in the semis. Should they win Saturday, they will play in the 3A state championship game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Tuesday.

Fossil Ridge, Cheyenne Mountain and Jefferson Academy are the top seeds for girls soccer playoffs.

The sport’s state playoff brackets were released on Sunday, with a committee completing the 32-team fields for classes 5A, 4A and 3A.

Fossil Ridge, the lone unbeaten team in 5A, earned the classification’s No. 1 seed. The SaberCats are 13-0-2 this season, and are riding an eight-game winning streak.

Rock Canyon is No. 2, Pine Creek is No. 3, defending champion Mountain Vista is No. 4 and Fairview is 5A’s fifth seed.

See the full 5A bracket here.

Cheyenne Mountain is also 13-0-2, and heads the 4A field. The Indians won last year’s crown, 2-0 over Broomfield.

Broomfield is the second seed this season, Sand Creek is third, Battle Mountain is fourth and Niwot is fifth.

See the full 4A bracket here.

In 3A, Jefferson Academy is No. 1 at 13-2-0. The Jaguars are riding a nine-game winning streak.

There will be a new champion in the classification as Peak to Peak did not make the field.

Colorado Academy is the second seed in 3A, St. Mary’s is No. 3, The Academy is No. 4 and Holy Family is No. 5.

  • Little movement in final girls soccer rankings of the season

Jefferson Academy Kent Denver girls soccer

With the playoffs just around the corner, girls soccer seems to have a pretty clear picture. For now, anyway.

Not only did none of the No. 1 teams change this week, none of the three classes added a new team in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.

There were jumps here and there — Jefferson Academy went from No. 6 to No. 3 in 3A; Palmer Ridge from No. 10 to No. 8 in 4A — but most of the movement amounted to tinkering.

The No. 1 teams this week are Pine Creek (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A).

With the regular season ending on Friday, these will serve as the final rankings.

Complete polls for all classes are below.
