  • Boys swim state roundup: Highlands Ranch’s Mueller aiming for title

THORNTON — For the last four years, the talented Nathan Mueller has been chasing a coveted state swimming championship.

The Highlands Ranch standout took two more steps toward reaching that goal when he finished first in the prelims of the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.22) and 500 freestyle (4:26.95) Friday in the Class 5A Swim and Dive State Championships at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

“That was one of my faster times for altitude (in the 200), and I was pleased with my 500 time,” the 6-foot-4, 180-pound Mueller said.

Diving prelims begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and the finals in all events start at 2 p.m.

Mueller, who also swam legs on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle, concluded his individual effort Friday in the 500-yard freestyle — an event he placed second at state in the last two years.

Standouts Clark Smith of Regis Jesuit, who set the all-school state record in the 200-yard freestyle a year ago when he won state, and Ponderosa’s Carter Griffin, the second-place finisher, have graduated.

That opens the door for Mueller who was third in the 200 the last two seasons. Mueller has signed to swim at the University of Wisconsin.

“It’s not urgency,” Mueller said about capturing the elusive individual state crown. “I’m just ready and racing is just so much fun. I’m just excited to race (Saturday) and I think I can win both (the 200 and 500).”

When Mueller isn’t in the pool, he spends time doing graphic design projects and sleeping. Those ventures, however, haven’t kept him from being wide awake in the classroom.

“I’m planning on majoring in biomedical engineering with a pre-med kind of focus,” said Mueller, who has a 3.8 GPA. “I know I want to do something with medicine and biomedical engineering is really cool and it sound really hands-on.”

Team-wise, Regis Jesuit, which has won 12 out of the last 13 state boys swimming titles, is aiming for another one Saturday.

Individually, Regis’ Stuart Hennessey (200-yard IM, 100 backstroke) doubled up as a No. 1 qualifier for Saturday’s championship finals as did Douglas County’s JP Beach (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle).

Fort Collins’ Maxwell Holter (100 butterfly), and Regis’ Quinlan Stuart (100 breaststroke) also paced their events heading into the finals.

In the relays, Regis qualified No. 1 for the finals in the 200-yard medley, and the 400 freestyle relay and Fairview is tops in the 200 yard freestyle.

The prelims for the Class 4A state meet took place Friday in Fort Collins.

The individual swims were highlighted by Thompson Valley’s Liam Gately (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), D’Evelyn’s Daniel Graber (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), and Air Academy’s Hunter Doerr (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), who each qualified No. 1 in a pair of events for Saturday’s championship finals.

Thompson Valley’s John Thorne (100 backstroke) and Discovery Canyon’s David Keller (100 butterfly) also each won their prelim heats.

In the relays, D’Evelyn (200 medley relay), Air Academy (200 freestyle relay) and Discovery Canyon (400 freestyle relay) were prelim winners.

Air Academy is the defending state champion.

Rock Canyon has rejoined CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A boys lacrosse poll.

The Jaguars are No. 9 this week after extending their winning streak to five games.

Elsewhere, Regis Jesuit remained at No. 1 — and is actually a unanimous pick this week. The Raiders are now 15-0.

Wheat Ridge is also a unanimous No. 1 pick in 4A. Air Academy was the lone newcomer to that ranking, joining at No. 10.

These rankings will serve as the final of the regular season with the schedule ending on Saturday and the postseason beginning next week.

Complete rankings for both classes are below.

LAKEWOOD — Wheat Ridge continued its domination in the boys’ lacrosse Class 4A Foothill League on Monday at Trailblazer Stadium.

The defending 4A state champion Farmers handled fifth-ranked Thompson Valley in conference action with a 13-2 victory. Wheat Ridge, No. 1 is this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys lacrosse rankings, all but wrapped up the league title improving to 6-0 in conference play with only Golden left on its league schedule.

The Farmers (10-3) have outscored their league opponents 97-12. Wheat Ridge’s only in-state loss this season came against 5A’s No. 2 ranked Cherry Creek.

“They (Wheat Ridge) are very good,” Thompson Valley coach Rich Modesti said. “They have been ranked No. 1 in 4A all year long because they deserve it.”

Wheat Ridge scored the first seven goals of the game, taking a 7-0 lead into halftime. Senior John Roach and junior Dima Makarov led the Farmers’ offensive attack with four goals each on the game.

Roach also added three assists and Dima Makarov had a pair of helpers.

“We are clicking on all cylinders,” Roach said. “I think the chemistry has real come together this time of the season. I’m excited about what we have coming.”

Senior Tyler Knott picked up a pair of goals for the Farmers. Max Marcum, Bennie Pachello and Dan O’Connor each added a goal for the Farmers in their sixth straight victory.

Defensively, senior goalie Jensen Makarov didn’t allow a goal in the first half. He also managed a shot on goal himself that was saved by Thompson Valley keeper Tim Zimmerman. Jensen Makarov officially signed with the University of Maryland this year after giving a verbal commitment after his sophomore season. The Terrapins (10-2) are currently ranked No. 4 in the Division I.

The Eagles (9-4, 5-1) prevented the Farmers’ starting goalie from grabbing his third shutout victory of the season early in the third quarter. Senior Jonah Warren was able to get a shot past Makarov with 10:28 left in the third quarter.

Wheat Ridge stopped any momentum Thompson Valley had with its first goal by scoring the next six goals to extend its lead to 13-1 early in the fourth quarter.

“The unforced turnovers and us trying to push things got the better of us in the first half,” Wheat Ridge coach Chris Knott said. “Once we got settled down and got things going the way we wanted to things started to fall for us.”

Senior Chris Tuuk played the final handful of minutes in net for the Farmers. After a goal by Eagles’ senior Michael Murray with 5:57 left in the game Tuuk was solid in net with several saves.

“It’s great,” Jensen Makarov said of watching his teammate in net. “He (Tuuk) is a senior and doesn’t get much playing time. It’s great to see how much how he has improved and see what he can do out there.”

Wheat Ridge closes the regular season with a pair of non-league games against Grandview and Highlands Ranch, with facing rival Golden sandwiched in the middle. Coach Knott wants to use the next few weeks to get his team playing to its fullest potential.

“We want to fine tune things,” coach Knott said. “When we do that we’ll be playing our best ball. That is where our focus is, to fine tune things.”

The 4A state tournament is schedule to begin May 7 and the Farmers are clearly focused on defending their state championship.

“We just need to play our game,” Jensen Makarov said. “We know we have a well-off team and have the talent to beat anyone if we play our game.”

After Mountain Vista, Kent Denver stayed at No. 4 and Arapahoe rounds out the top five.

LOVELAND — Heather Waite, a fourth-place finisher at Class 5A state meet in the pole vault as a junior, was looking for a breakout performance to kick start her senior year.

Friday, she seized it. At the R2-J Invitational, a high-level midseason meet at Loveland High School, Waite won the pole vault by over a foot with a towering mark of 12 feet and half of an inch. The mark was a new personal best, a school record, and places her second in 5A.

“It was 11-8,” Waite said of her previous best. “I haven’t been able to clear anything higher than 11-6 yet this season, so I’m super excited for this.”

Waite, who won the prestigious Mullen Runners Roost Invitational last weekend over defending 5A state champion Megan McCabe of Cherry Creek, set the tone for the Loveland Indians Friday in their quest for another district title.

This year’s edition of the R2-J Meet featured 12 teams, including strong programs from Cheyenne Mountain, Eaton, The Classical Academy, and a portion of Valor Christian’s squad.

The overall meet was scored separately from the R2-J district meet, which is comprised of Loveland, Thompson Valley, Mountain View and Berthoud. The ultimate prize for the district teams is the overall team championship, decided by the total points for both boys and girls teams.

Loveland has won every district championship since the meet began in 1999 and was able to claim another on the strength of its girls program. Loveland’s girls finished first in both the overall and district meets and had a whopping 143 points, 60 ahead of their nearest competitor, The Classical Academy, in the overall meet.

“Our kids really competed well, which is what we ask for,” Loveland coach Paul Quere said about his team’s performance. “There’s a lot of pride on the Loveland side in the R2-J Meet and Thompson Valley, Mountain View and Berthoud all have great teams. We kind of separate that really from the bigger meet, because it means more to our kids and more to our coaches. Obviously, boys and girls, for what we had, had a really outstanding day and I’m just proud of the way they competed.”

Waite’s eye-opening pole vault was the headliner, but the Indians got contributions from Taylor Buschy (fourth in the 100 meters, second  in the 200 meters, second in the 400 meters), Alex Koschel (second in the triple jump) and Ashley Krawczuk (second in the 100 meter hurdles, fourth in the high jump).

Loveland’s distance runners also made noise with two sizzling finishes. Ashlyn Brent had a 32-second personal best in the 3,200 with a time of 11:39. She ran a meter behind Thompson Valley’s Ellie Colpitts, who placed fourth in 11:45, the entire race and then turned on the jets the last lap to earn third place and a spot in the top 20 in 5A.

On the boys side, Loveland’s Kyle Brinkman used a similar tactic to win a district championship. Brinkman stayed within 10 feet of Thompson Valley’s Kaleb Simington in the 1,600. Simington boasts the fourth-best 3,200 meter time in 4A at 9:49 and has been the best distance runner in the town of Loveland this spring, but Brinkman had him in sight with 200 meters to go.

A crowded lead pack began their kick together, but Brinkman “found a little gap and got through,” he said. “The last 200 I shifted into gear and took off.”

The closing kick was enough to secure the district title with a time of 4:34.56, just over three seconds clear of Simington.

Mountain View’s boys, one of the top teams in 4A this season, ran away from the field with a commanding 132.5 points. The Classical Academy was second with 97 points.

The Mountain Lions displayed their talent with an 8:13 3,200 meter relay.

“The (4-by-800) went really well, because it was the first time we’ve run our ‘A’ team,” Nick Olson, one of Mountain View’s top sprinters, said afterward. “We ran the fastest time in the state so far for 4A.

“As a team, we’re definitely looking really strong,” Olson added. “Our (4-by-200) is one of the top five teams in the state for 4A, so is our (4-by-400) team, and just now with the (4-by-800), that sets us really high. The boys team is looking really strong and we’re competing really well.”

Thompson Valley also had several great performances. Andrew Bradberry won the 100 and 200 meters with a 10.80 and 22.49 double. His 100 time places him first in the classification. Jake Martinson won the pole vault with a mark of 14 feet, 3 inches — a new Thompson Valley record and the second best vault in 4A this year.

The story of the day was breakout performances. Waite hopes her top-shelf mark leads to greater heights.

“By the end of the season, a really ambitious goal I have is 13-0,” Waite said. “A more realistic one is 12-7.”

After Friday, several R2-J tracksters are leaning towards the ambitious side.

  • Mullen, Palmer join 5A boys lacrosse poll

Mullen made its return to CHSAANow.com’s boys lacrosse poll in Class 5A this week, and the Mustangs were joined by newcomer Palmer.

Mullen, now 6-5, won both of its games last week and is No. 8 in this week’s ranking.

Palmer, meanwhile, is 5-2 and also went 2-0 last week. The Terrors are No. 9.

Regis Jesuit stayed atop the 5A ranking this week, and continued to be followed by No. 2 Cherry Creek. Arapahoe moved up one place to No. 3, leaping No. 4 Kent Denver. Mountain Vista rounds out the top 5.

Wheat Ridge held firm is 4A’s No. 1 spot, as well. In fact, the entire top 5 stayed put, including No. 2 Ponderosa, No. 3 Steamboat Springs, No. 4 Aspen and No. 5 Thompson Valley.

Conifer was the lone new team to 4A’s poll, joining at No. 10.

Complete rankings for both classes are below.
