Another week, another new team atop the Class 5A baseball rankings.

Rocky Mountain became the latest team to ascend to the top of CHSAANow.com’s poll this week when the Lobos received eight of the 15 first-place votes and edged No. 2 Mountain Vista. Cherry Creek, the former No. 1, fell to third this week.

Rocky is the third team to lead the 5A ranking this season following preseason No. 1 Regis Jesuit and Creek.

Fairview stayed put at fourth in this week’s poll, and Grandview stayed at fifth. Behind them, three new teams joined: No. 6 Monarch (6-0-1), No. 7 Fruita Monument (12-0) and No. 9 Heritage (7-2).

ThunderRidge is No. 8 this week, while Regis is No. 10.

In 1A, there’s also a new No. 1. Eads takes over after getting four of the eight first-place votes. Former No. 1 Holly dropped to third. Community Christian is second.

That 1A poll added Granada (No. 8) and Cornerstone Christian (No. 9).

The other No. 1 teams stayed the same this week. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A).

Other newcomers include No. 9 Wheat Ridge in 4A; No. 8 La Junta and No. 9 Bayfield in 3A; and No. 9 Ellicott in 2A.

  • Cherry Creek baseball takes over as No. 1 in 5A ranking

Cherry Creek is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A baseball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After beating two ranked teams last week, including then-No. 1 Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek has taken over atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball rankings.

The Bruins beat Regis Jesuit on Monday and then-No. 4 Legend on Wednesday, giving them three wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did drop a 5-1 decision to then-No. 10 Mountain Vista on Friday.

However, voters still gave Cherry Creek eight of the 15 first-place votes that were cast this week, and the Bruins totalled 124 points to lead the poll. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista each got three first-place votes; those two teams are No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Fairview received the other first-place vote, and moved up one spot to fourth this week. Grandview, which got a big win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge on Friday, rounds out the top five.

Regis Jesuit fell from No. 1 to No. 6, ThunderRidge is No. 7, and three newcomers complete 5A’s ranking this week: No. 8 Pine Creek, No. 9 Arapahoe and No. 10 Ralston Valley.

There’s also a new No. 1 team in 1A, where Holly takes over. The other No. 1 teams — Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) — remained the same this week.

With many programs heading out of state for spring break, or simply taking time off, the next rankings will release on April 6.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Rock Canyon, The Classical Academy new top-ranked teams in girls soccer

Rock Canyon is the new No. 1 team in this week’s Class 5A girls soccer ranking. The Jaguars received six of the 10 first-place votes from CHSAANow.com’s voters.

But that turned out to be just the start of the upheaval in 5A, where five teams received at least one first-place vote.

Arapahoe jumped from No. 9 to No. 2, and four newcomers joined the poll this week. Those new teams: No. 4 ThunderRidge, No. 6 Broomfield, No. 7 Grandview and No. 10 Fairview.

Mountain Vista is No. 3 this week, and Pine Creek is No. 5.

Things weren’t much more stable in 4A, where The Classical Academy vaulted from unranked to No. 1. Evergreen went from sixth to second, Valor Christian from eighth to third and Ponderosa from unranked to fourth.

Wheat Ridge (No. 9) also joined the 4A poll this week.

The No. 1 teams in 3A (Colorado Academy) and 2A (Front Range Christian) did stay put this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

GOLDEN – For the past eight years, the Metro League has owned the Class 3A state girls basketball tournament.

    That’s about to change.

When the state title game gets underway at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Lockridge Arena on the Colorado School of Mines campus, two public schools will be dueling to bring home the trophy. Sterling and Pagosa Springs will battle to become the first program outside of the Metro to win it all since Centauri in 2006.

The only two undefeated teams in the field advanced to Saturday’s finale with hard-fought victories. Pagosa Springs upended Lutheran 52-45, and Sterling held off Manitou Springs 36-34.

“I think we’re both two very good programs – obviously Lutheran is too. With Holy Family moving up, they were the commandant for a long time,” Pirates coach Wes Lewis said of the Tigers, who claimed six out of the last seven titles. “But I’m glad to see it’s going to go to a public school, no disrespect to any of the privates. We’re excited, we know we have a big challenge ahead of us tomorrow.”

That comes after another big challenge Friday. Pagosa Springs (25-0) trailed Lutheran by four points going into the fourth quarter. Payton Shahan cut it two before Taylor Lee Hammer stole a pass and drove the length of the floor for a bucket and the foul. Her three-point play gave the Pirates the lead and some much-needed momentum.

“Once I saw my chance, I took it,” Hammer said. “I don’t regret it.”

Lutheran briefly regained the lead at 40-39, but Pagosa Springs outscored the Lions 12-5 the rest of the way. Morgan Schaaf and Morgan Lewis knocked down baskets, and the Pirates were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

Shahan led Pagosa Springs with 16 points. Schaaf added 13 and Hammer had 12.

“I am so stoked and so excited,” Hammer said. “We’ve come a long ways and this is where we want to be right now.”

The Pirates defeated Sterling in the state semifinals a year ago before falling to Holy Family in the championship game.

“A lot of people kind of doubted this group of girls. We lost three really good players last year, and it motivated these kids,” Lewis said. “It fired these kids up. We’re probably better in some ways and maybe not as good in some other ways, but we’re a different team for sure.”

Kristen Vigil led Lutheran (24-2) with 18 points and Chandler Sturms added eight. The Lions won the 2A state title last season but moved up to the 3A classification for 2014-15.

One night after scoring 26 points, Jenna Knudson made a bigger statement Friday with her defense.

With the game tied at 30-30, the Sterling junior came up with a key steal that led to a basket on the other end by teammate Taylor Knudson. The Tigers (26-0) never relinquished the lead on their way to a berth in the state title game.

“She’s been our rock on our team all year,” Sterling coach Kent Chrisman said. “Trust me, she’d say ‘get me a win and I’ll score no points and I’ll be happy.’ That’s just the mentality that she has.”

Knudson finished with 13 points and Kylie Chavez added 10 for the Tigers, who have the chance to avenge last year’s semifinal loss to Pagosa Springs.

“The bottom line is it’s nice that we get that opportunity,” Chrisman said. “We got here last year and played Pagosa Springs in the Final 4. At that time, they were a better team than we were – we got beat by a better team. The kids have learned from it.”

Sterling led by six points in the third quarter Friday, but Manitou Springs (23-3) fought back to eventually take a one-point lead. After the Tigers got back into it and Knudson put the team back on top, Sterling closed it out at the free-throw line.

The Tigers didn’t get to the line until less than three minutes remained in the game but were a perfect 6-for-6 down the stretch.

“We put pressure on the kids on shooting free throws,” Chrisman said. “We try to put them in as many game situations as we can. Trust me, we turn the P.A. system up and make as much noise as we can to get the kids to focus.”

The Mustangs received a game-high 16 points from sophomore Shelby Megyeri and McKenzi Petrico added 10. Manitou Springs was among the youngest teams in the field without a single senior on the roster.

GOLDEN – With Manitou Springs needing a little bit of a spark Thursday night, Shelby Megyeri turned into a wrecking ball on both ends of the floor.

The sophomore was all over the place down the stretch for the Mustangs in the Class 3A state girls basketball quarterfinals, forcing turnovers, drawing fouls and driving to the basket for layups. Megyeri finished with a game-high 16 points, and Manitou Springs rode an impressive defensive performance to a 50-44 victory over Eaton and a berth in Friday’s semifinals at Lockridge Arena on the Colorado School of Mines campus.

“It’s a great feeling. I’ve never experienced it,” Megyeri said. “I’m only a sophomore and I’ve only been to state (once). We got to state last year but we lost our first game. This is a new feeling – it’s hard to explain, but I’ve got the chills thinking about it.”

Manitou Springs (23-2) takes on top-seeded Sterling (25-0) at 4 p.m., with Pagosa Springs (24-0) meeting Lutheran (24-1) at 7 p.m. in Golden.

“We’ve very excited. Sterling’s a great basketball team,” Mustangs coach Jon Asp said. “I feel like we rise to the occasion against good teams.”

Eaton led 37-32 late in the third quarter before Brooke Garretson knocked down a pair of free throws. Megyeri then picked off two passes that led to layups.

A Jayla Jarnigan 3-pointer put Eaton back up 42-38, but the Mustangs rallied again. After Shelby Hard cut the lead to two points, Megyeri and Garretson combined to score the team’s final 10 points.

Eaton was limited to only five points in the fourth quarter.

“From here on out we had eight strong teams, and I told the girls at halftime we can’t outscore any of these teams here,” Asp said. “We’ve got to step it up on the defensive end and that starts with boxing out. We boxed out awful that first half.”

Eaton junior Bailey Schumacher scored 13 points in the first half but was held scoreless over the final two quarters. Caiden Rexius added 11 points for the Reds.

“Eaton’s a strong team and I felt like they had the momentum most of the game,” Asp said. “But I think our advantage is we’ve won a lot of close games these last two years. We’ve been in a lot of tough games and we’ve been able to pull it out and win those.”

The Tigers remained undefeated thanks in large part to a first-quarter surge that saw Sterling outscore the Eagles 16-5.

Jenna Knudson led Sterling with 26 points, including a 14-of-17 effort from the free-throw line.

Molly Gillis led Liberty Common with 12 points.

    (2) Pagosa Springs 48, (10) Centauri 33

Payton Shahan scored 16 points and Morgan Schaaf added 10 as the Pirates moved into the semifinals with an impressive showing against Centauri.

Schaaf added seven rebounds and six blocked shots.

The Falcons shot just 26.3 percent in the first half and 23 turnovers. Ember Canty led Centauri with 13 points.

Four Lions players finished in double figures as Lutheran rolled into the 3A semifinals one year removed from winning the 2A state championship.

Chandler Sturms led Lutheran with 16 points. Kaleigh Paplow and Kristen Vigil added 12 points each and Cara Thomas chipped in with 11 points.

  • 3A basketball roundup: Bayfield shocks The Pinnacle

Don’t tell Bayfield they were the No. 28 team in this years 3A boys state basketball tournament.

The Wolverines squeaked into this year’s field of 32 teams and were placed near the bottom of the pecking order. But it was they who had the last laugh Friday night. Their reward for making the tournament was to travel to No. 5 overall seed The Pinnacle.

    Challenge accepted.

And when it was over and done with, the Timberwolves never stood a chance. The Wolverines pulled the 3A upset of the night with a 75-54 win to advance to the Sweet 16 where they’ll face Eaton.

This was anything but a cakewalk for the favored Mustangs. In the second quarter they were facing a 17-0 deficit, but would eventually light their fuse and go on a 47-11 run to end the game.

Sophomore Shelby Megyeri paced the Mustangs with 14 points on the night, 12 of them coming in the second half.

The Sun Devils found themselves down by two, but had the ball with under 10 seconds to go. They couldn’t convert on the possession and the Beetdiggers advanced to the Sweet 16.

They’ll face Sterling on Saturday where it will be the fourth matchup between the two teams this year.

    (25) Liberty Common 67, (8) Bennett 51

Liberty common took the court for their first ever playoff game at the 3A level Friday night. They didn’t disappoint their supporters or themselves as they convincingly knocked off Bennett to advance to the Sweet 16.

Halley Milkos scored a team-high 25 points and Kayla Rhoads added 21 of her own to help the Eagles advance to the next round.

  • All-state girls swimming and diving teams for 2014-15 season

The 2014-15 all-state girls swimming teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

Swimmers of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they swam in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they swam in. Finally, in order to be considered for swimmer of the year, athletes must first have made the all-state team by winning in a championship.

Divers of the year were selected by finish at the state meet, as were coaches of the year.
