  • Football roundup: No. 5 Palisade knocks off No. 3 Holy Family in 3A

    Palisade had a key fourth-down stop near the goal-line in the fourth quarter as the fifth-ranked Bulldogs upset No. 3 Holy Family 42-34 in a huge Class 3A football game on Friday evening.

    PD Riddle ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, while Prescott Price and Isaac Maestas each had two touchdowns.

    “It was like an arena football game,” Palisade coach Joe Ramunno told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday. “We had to take away possessions, and we were able to do that.”

    The game tilted back-and-forth throughout, though Palisade never trailed. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference.

    “That’s what we knew we had to do, because they are so potent offensively,” Ramunno said. “They came back, though. They brought it back to 28-21 at the half. … We just knew we had to keep a possession ahead as much as we could, but they made a run for it there at the end.”

    Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig, who set the state passing record two weeks ago, continued his torrid early-season pace. He threw for three more touchdowns on Friday night, giving him 16 over three consecutive games. That breaks the previous record of 15 set by Grand Junction’s Doug Musgrave in 1988.

    Trailing 35-28 late in the fourth quarter, Holy Family marched down to the Palisade 5-yard-line, but the Bulldogs turned away the high-powered offense. Palisade scored on Maestas’ 87-yard touchdown on its next drive.

    “They had a great drive going on, and our defense really stepped up to get a great finish on it,” Ramunno said. “We were able to stop that fourth-down conversion, and then just a just a few plays later, Isaac was able to get into the end zone.

    “It was a big turnaround for us. They were going in to tie it up, and we ended up getting it back to (a 14-point lead).”

    Holy Family again cut into the lead to make it 45-34 with 55 seconds to play, but couldn’t recover an onside kick and Palisade was able to hang on.

    Maestas rushed for more than 200 yards for Palisade.

    5A: Mullen 38, (2) Pomona 31 (OT)

    Mullen rallied from down 24-13 in the third quarter to eventually take a 28-24 lead over the second-ranked Panthers with seven minutes remaining.

    Pomona went up 31-28 with a minute remaining, and then Mullen hit a field goal to send it to overtime.

    Once there, the Mustangs pulled off the biggest upset of the young season.

    5A: Arapahoe 17, (5) Grandview 14

    Arapahoe pulled off the upset thanks to the above field goal with a little over a minute to play.

    The Warriors led 7-0 at the half after Mitch Pennetta’s fumble recovery for a score. Grandview tied it up, but then Pete Mitchell hit Connor Williams for a 69-yard passing touchdown to give Arapahoe another lead.

    Arapahoe is now 3-0, including two wins over ranked teams.

    6-man: (1) Fleming 66, (3) Pawnee 22

    Fleming was up 24-6 at the half, then exploded in the second half to take the important 6-man matchup.

    “We came out aggressively,” Wildcats coach John King told the Scoreboard Show. “We just executed really well. We kind of went right at them and actually probably ran the ball more tonight than we have been lately.”

    5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 19, (9) Cherokee Trail  14

    The Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime, and held on for the important top-10 win.

    Cherokee Trail cut it to 13-7 in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit pushed it back to 19-7 midway through the fourth quarter.

    The Cougars did score again in the final minutes, but Regis Jesuit got a game-ending interception.

    5A: Horizon 18, (8) Fairview 14

    Horizon rallied from a 14-0 hole to score the game’s final 18 points and pull the upset.

    The Hawks cut into that lead to make it 14-12 at half, then took the lead on Jared Jiron’s 1-yard touchdown with 2:15 to go in the third quarter.

    Horizon made a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, and then recovered a muffed punt with two minutes left to hold on and win.

    The Knights had won 20 consecutive games in the regular season prior to Friday’s loss.

    4A/3A: (9) Palmer Ridge 48, (9) Lewis Palmer 14

    Isaiah Sanders threw for 440 yards and four touchdowns as Palmer Ridge won General Palmer’s Cup over its rival.

    Palmer Ridge (3-0) stretched its lead to 28-0 before Lewis-Palmer finally got on the board, and then cruised from there.

    • A total of five top-10 teams in Class 5A have lost (so far) this week, including four to unranked opponents.
    • Mountain View beat rival Loveland for the first time ever, 38-28. It was the team’s ninth meeting.
    • No. 4 Windsor easily handled Fort Collins in a good 4A matchup, 30-6.
    • 1A No. 8 Rye shutout 2A No. 10 Trinidad 45-0.
    • Pueblo South upset No. 8 Wheat Ridge in 4A, 42-35.
    • Another upset, this one in 2A: Pueblo County over No. 8 Florence 14-0.
    • No. 2 Eads handled No. 9 Cheyenne Wells in 6-man, 60-12.
    • In coach Todd Casebier’s return to Montrose, his former team beat Fruita Monument 31-7.
    • 5A No. 4 Valor Christian went to Utah and beat East 26-10.
    • Nate Renfrew had the game-winning extra point in overtime as Air Academy beat Widefield 40-39 in 4A.
    • West Grand football coach Chris Brown won his 300th career game last week. Friday, he got No. 301 in a 46-32 win over Gilpin County.
    • Pueblo West beat Falcon 34-26 in 4A.
    • Wiggins took down 1A No. 10 Crowley County, 27-20.

  • Student section a factor as Rocky Mountain volleyball outlasts Loveland in five sets

    FORT COLLINS — On Tuesday night, the volleyball teams from Rocky Mountain and Loveland battled head-to-head until they no longer could put up a fight.

    Loveland coach Sonja DeBord gave credit to Rocky’s student section for affecting the performance of her team during the last couple points of the match.

    “Both times we lost we were on that side and that’s one of those things you tell the girls to block out, but it got into their head and affected them mentally,” Debord said.

    After a tough match of five sets, the Lobos (2-1) just barely defeated the Indians (2-3) with scores of 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-13, and 17-15.

    Both teams played very aggressively in the first set, staying within a 3-point margin almost the whole time. The set was tied at 20 and Loveland played hard defensively, forcing Rocky to call a time out. But the timeout was not enough, as Loveland took the set.

    Rocky started the second set strong, immediately taking the lead and frustrating the Indians. The Lobosy lost some gas toward the middle of the set when Loveland came back to tie it at 18.

    After a timeout called by Rocky, the Lobos came back full force taking the set 25-22.

    Loveland’s defense stepped up in the third set to the extent where the Indiansy had a nine-point lead on Rocky. Rocky struggled trying to catch up to the Indians, but wasn’t able to get within five points of them.

    A miscommunication on the Lobos’ side resulted in yet another set taken by the visiting team.

    The Lobos were not willing to give many points up during the fourth set, and they had a steady lead on the Indians, almost doubling their score throughout. Rocky Mountain won the set 25-13.

    The fifth and final set had everyone in the Den on their feet — yelling, screaming, and cheering their team on. The insanely close set brought on a crazy atmosphere in the gym.

    With each point scored by Loveland, Rocky Mountain would answer soon after.

    The Indians had a five-point lead on the Lobos at 13-8 when Rocky mountain coach Julie Hilt then took the opportunity to take a timeout to make adjustments and get her team’s heads in the game.

    From there, Rocky Mountain tied the set at 15. Loveland’s Sofia Jacobson spiked the ball out of bounds, giving the Lobos a 16-15 lead. Then the magic happened when Lobo freshman Annika Larson served an ace to finish out the match.

    Rocky senior Taira Cottingham and the rest of her team were filled with excitement when Larson finished out their intense match.

    “We all went ballistic,” Cottingham said. “We are so proud of her.”

    The senior added that preparation during practice came in handy during the match.

    “We put so much work into this, during practice we prepare for these situations all the time and then we pull through, and it’s honestly an amazing feeling,” Cottingham said.

    Hilt said she still has a lot to work on with her team regarding consistency and urgency. She plans on fixing her team’s errors and improving their play before their next match this Thursday against Broomfield.

  • Football roundup: Chaos reigns in Week 1 of the season

    It was not a good week to be ranked as the 2015 football season began in earnest.

    When the dust settled on Friday night, here’s what we were left with:

    • Three No. 1 teams lost on Friday night. 5A’s Valor Christian was clipped by No. 3 Pomona. 2A’s Brush, the defending champion, last to 3A No. 2 Fort Morgan, and 8-man’s Caliche fell to unranked Kiowa.
    • Ranked teams are just 35-23 so far in Week 1. That includes three ranked 4A teams which lost to unranked opponents on Friday alone.
    • In all, there have been 16 upsets so far in Week 1, including 13 ranked teams losing to unranked opponents.

    3A/2A: (2) Fort Morgan 47, (1) Brush 7

    Fort Morgan controlled this rivalry game from start to finish — a game that had a new twist with new Brush coach Reid Kahl, who graduated from Fort Morgan.

    “I consider Reid Kahl one of my good friends. When I got to Fort Morgan, the Kahls took me in,” Fort Morgan coach Harrison Chisum told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. “I’m glad it’s over. It’s tough coaching against friends. He’s an outstanding coach and I have a lot of respect for him. … I’m just glad it’s done and we’re still friends.”

    Brush had won five consecutive games in the rivalry.

    “It was a little more enjoyable this year,” Chisum said. “Five years in a row, they’ve had our number. To finally come out on top, it feels good. The boys did a good job.

    “I didn’t realize it was five years. I think I was trying to forget some of those years. … It’s pretty nice to be able to start off with a win.”

    8-man: Kiowa 12, (1) Caliche 6

    In a rare low-scoring game, Kiowa knocked off the No. 1 team, and defending champions.

    Kiowa led 12-0 after the first quarter, and it turned out to be all the points it would need.

    The win avenged last season’s 49-6 loss to Caliche. Kiowa went on to finish 2-7 in 2014. This win actually snapped a six-game losing streak.

    Conversely, Caliche had won nine games in a row — including a Zero Week game against Soroco.

    4A: Loveland 36, (5) Denver South 18

    Quarterback Ayden Eberhardt had four total touchdowns to lead Loveland to the upset of Denver South.

    The senior rushed for three, and passed for another — and, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald, kicked a field goal.

    “Our quarterback is just a great, nifty little runner and can do things,” Loveland coach Wayne McGinn told the newspaper. “You don’t know where he’s going. I don’t know where he’s going half the time.”

    6-man: (3) Arickaree/Woodlin 58, (5) Peetz 50

    Arickaree/Woodlin, the defending 6-man champion, out-gunned Peetz in a shootout despite having a young roster.

    “Our starting six or seven have a lot of experience, but they’re in some different positions this year,” Arickaree/Woodlin coach David Saffer told the Scoreboard Show. “And we’ve got a bunch of young kids and they’re just kind of learning high school football and adjusting to the speed and learning what it takes to win at this level.”

    Notables

    • Arvada beat Sheridan 27-14, and in doing so, snapped an 18-game losing streak which dated to 2013. The Bulldogs’ last win came on Sept. 13, 2013, in overtime against Skyview. The program had been 1-22 over its past 23 games going back to 2012.
    • Manitou Springs recovered five onside kicks in its game against Faith Christian. Faith Christian, however, won 46-32.
    • It was a top-5 matchup in 2A as No. 5 Platte Valley beat No. 3 Strasburg 30-7.
    • Cross-classification showdown: 4A No. 7 Windsor beat 3A No. 6 Roosevelt 25-12.
    • In 3A, Mitchell beat Widefield 34-28 in double overtime. It wasn’t the night’s only extra time. 1A’s Olathe beat Hotchkiss in overtime, 29-27, and in 5A, Cherokee Trail beat ThunderRidge 22-15.
    • In 1A, No. 1 Paonia beat No. 7 Monte Vista 21-7.
    • Dakota Ridge, ranked No. 3 in 4A, opened with a big 38-9 win over 5A Monarch. “We challenged our kids all week that they needed to play physical and play tough,” coach Ron Woitalewicz told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids really rose to that expectation.”
    • Eaglecrest led 5A No. 9 Ralston Valley 14-13 at halftime, but the Mustangs stormed back to take a 33-27 win. Ralston Valley nearly fell victim to a comeback of its own, as it held a 33-14 lead in the fourth quarter but had to hold on.
    • 5A No. 6 Fairview led Grand Junction 21-0, but had to hold on for a 21-12 win.
    • Lakewood handed 5A No. 8 Fountain-Fort Carson its second straight loss, this one a 31-21 decision.
    • Douglas County rallied to beat Arvada West 27-26 late.
    • Chaparral played 5A No. 7 Grandview tough early, but the Wolves pulled away for a 29-12 win.
    • Six more Colorado teams played out-of-state opponents on Friday, going 4-2. Durango, Holly, La Junta and Sedgwick County all notched wins, while Wray and Montezuma-Cortez lost on Friday. So far in 2015, Colorado teams are 8-2 against out-of-state foes.

  • Photos: No. 4 Fairview baseball blasts Loveland

    BOULDER — No. 4 Fairview baseball run-ruled Loveland, 16-6, after five innings on Tuesday afternoon.

    Fairview pitcher Johnny Feauto took a no-hitter into the third inning, going through the whole lineup before the lead-off hitter, John Tower, broke it up. Feauto got the win, throwing four innings, while striking out five and allowing three earned runs.

    Loveland’s Thomas Patton got the loss after giving up 11 earned runs in two innings of work.

    Fairview’s offense jumped on the Indians early, racking up six runs in the first inning, and 15 runs in the first three innings. Ryan Madden led the way for the Knights, collecting four hits in four at-bats, knocking in three runs, and crossing the plate four times.

    Ayden Eberhardt had two hits, one RBI and one run for Loveland.
