Defending champions are on top of three of CHSAANow.com’s four preseason girls soccer rankings. The fourth? Well, it’s a new classification this season.

Columbine (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A) are all coming off of titles last season, and all opened the year at No. 1 when the poll was released on Monday.

Front Range Christian leads the first-ever 2A poll. The Falcons made the 3A state tournament field last season.

In 5A, Columbine got four of the 10 first-place votes to edge No. 2 Mountain Vista. Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon (No. 3) and Pine Creek (No. 5) each received two first-place votes.

Ralston Valley, last year’s runner-up, is No. 4 in 5A’s preseason poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Evergreen wins second consecutive 4A girls swimming title

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

THORNTON — The day began with records falling. Three of the first four races saw the Manitou Springs medley relay team and two individual swimmers come in with the best times ever for the 4A class. The landmark day ended with Evergreen hosting the state championship trophy at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.

The Cougars finished with an overall score or 368, besting runner-up Cheyenne Mountain by 92 points to successfully defend their 2014 title.

“We’re just really proud of our girls and we’re happy with how we swam today,” Cougars coach Jeanne Godaire said. “We had a lot of best times and the girls were ready for the meet.”

Through the first two events, the Cougars were without a win as Manitou took the 200-yard medley relay and Thompson Valley’s Eryn Eddy won the 200-yard freestyle. Both wins resulted in 4A records.

It was the third event when Lindsay Morrow finally got Evergreen on the board with a win. He took the 200-yard invdividual medley with a time of 2:03.42, almost three seconds better than than second-place finisher – and her teammate – Anna McDonald.

“Getting the individual wins were great, but to be able to celebrate this win as a team is such an incredible feeling,” Morrow said. “We all worked really hard in prelims and knew coming in today that we just had to move up one spot to be able to do well today.”

The win was anything but a given for the Cougars as they had the Indians on their tail much of the day. Cheyenne Mountain had finished in the top three at state three years in a row coming into Saturday’s meet and would prove to be force once again.

Freshman Cat Wright got the charge started for the Indians by taking the 100-yard butterfly, setting a state record in the process. It was the only win for the Indians on the day, but their consistency to finish in the top five boosted them into a firm second-place finish.

“Evergreen was so strong and they had so many horses in the early races,” Indians coach Kate Doane said. “We’re very happy with where we finished. We wanted a top-two finish and so as far as getting to No. 1, we swam the best we could and so did Evergreen.”

The Cougars recorded four wins on the day, with Morrow accounting for two of the three individual wins. The Cougars won the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, a fitting bow to tie on their state title.

“We had some top girls get us some good wins,” Godaire said. “We got a lot of points in the (consolation races) and the finals which helped.”

  • Sand Creek joins 4A girls basketball poll at No. 9

Sand Creek has joined the Class 4A girls basketball rankings at No. 9 this week.

Each of the five No. 1 teams stayed atop their respective rankings. Those are ThunderRidge (5A), Canon City (4A), Sterling (3A), Peyton (2A) and Kit Carson (1A).

  • No. 5 St. Mary’s girls basketball upsets No. 2 Manitou Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS — In a game that is sure to shake up the Class 3A girls basketball rankings, the fifth-ranked St. Mary’s Pirates got a huge 47-40 win over No. 2 Manitou Springs Friday night.

With the win, the Pirates (16-0 overall, 8-0 3A Tri-Peaks) now have sole control over the Tri-Peaks League with two league games remaining on their schedule.

“This was a great game just to let us know that we’re capable of playing with great teams like Manitou,” Pirates guard Maggie Hartman said. “They’re a very good team and it was a great challenge for us. We enjoyed it.”

The teams were locked in a tight game from the get go as Gala Jensen started things off with a quick basket for the Mustangs (14-2, 7-1). It seemed the junior forward, who averages 16 points per game, was going to be in for a big night, but foul trouble took her out of rhythm and she wouldn’t score another basket until the fourth quarter.

The Pirates would go on a 7-0 run before the Mustangs could get point guard Shelby Megyeri involved. Seven of her 13 points on the night came in the first quarter as she pulled the Mustangs to within one point at 10-9.

“We knew Shelby could shoot, she hit about six threes on us last year,” Pirates coach Mike Burkett said. “She does so many things for them and she has such a diversified game.”

The Pirates padded their lead in the second quarter by going on a 12-2 run. The Mustangs finally got some life when Megyeri was able to sink a bucket and knock down two free throws on the next possession to cut the Pirates’ lead to 22-15 at halftime.

The biggest problem for the Mustangs was the inability to get bodies underneath the basket for rebounds. And even if they were there, the ball always seemed to bounce into the waiting hands of St. Mary’s.

“We worked hard on defense and we just didn’t reward ourselves with a box-out,” Manitou coach Jon Asp said.

As the second half carried on, the Mustangs fell more and more out of sync. Toward the end of the third quarter, Megyeri penetrated toward the basket before trying to pass the ball to forward Brooke Garretson who was expecting the ball to be shot. Asp decided that the communication wasn’t working with the personnel on the court and opted remove Garretson from the game.

But by then, he was ready to send Jensen back in, which gave the Mustangs a huge boost. Trailing by 10 early in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs finally began to hit some much needed shots.

A 3-pointer from McKenzi Petricko followed by a basket with a foul shot from Jensen cut the St. Mary’s lead to four points. The Pirates would once again build it up to seven before Petricko knocked down another three to once again make it a four-point game. But that’s as close as the Mustangs would get.

Hartman made her way to the foul line eight times in the fourth quarter and made all but one of them. She finished with a game-high 20 points to give the Pirates the upset on their home floor.

“You have to take advantage of the home wins,” Burkett said. “(Manitou) is a great team. They beat us last year on a buzzer beater and it was two evenly matched teams.”
