Rangeview has joined this week’s Class 5A boys basketball ranking at No. 10.

The Raiders, who are riding an eight-game winning streak, totaled 18 points to crack CHSAANow.com’s ranking.

The 5A poll continued to be led by Regis Jesuit, which got 18 of the 20 first-place votes in the classification. ThunderRidge, which got the other two first-place votes, stayed put at No. 2. Those two teams play on Tuesday.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 3, leaping Eaglecrest. Chaparral rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked this week in 5A: No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Rock Canyon, No. 8 Denver East and No. 9 Fossil Ridge.

In 4A, Longmont extended its stay atop the poll. The Trojans are a unanimous pick with all 20 first-place votes following their one-point win over then-No. 2 Holy Family.

Golden returned to the No. 2 spot in 4A this week, just ahead of Holy Family, which fell to No. 3.

The 4A poll added Air Academy (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) this week.

For the third time in three weeks, there is a new No. 1 atop the 3A poll after Lutheran was upset by Jefferson Academy last week.

Faith Christian makes a return after garnering nine of the 15 first-place votes. Colorado Springs Christian, another former No. 1, got the other six first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Lutheran dropped to No. 3, while Jefferson Academy is No. 4.

That ranking added Alamosa (No. 10) this week.

Elsewhere, Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) both stayed atop their respective rankings.

The 2A poll added Sedgwick County. 1A added Kit Carson. Both are ranked tenth this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • No. 4 Pueblo West girls hoops beats No. 9 Pueblo South at home for first time

PUEBLO — Success is not a foreign concept in the Pueblo West High School girls basketball program.

The Cyclones have advanced to Class 4A Final Four twice in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Yet, since the school opened in 1997 they had never beat perennial power Pueblo South at the Colts’ home gym.

    Until Tuesday that is.

Haley Simental scored 26 points and Shannon Sanchez added 12 points, powering West to a 48-40 victory over South in a key South-Central League game.

“Any win in the South-Central League is great,” West coach Gil Lucero said. “This is a huge win for us to beat South at South. We had to be able to weather the storm and keep our composure and that’s what we were able to do.”

The Cyclones (14-4) are ranked No. 4 in the latest CHSAAnow.com poll, and improved to 5-0 in the S-CL. South (11-5) dropped to 3-2 in the S-CL. The Colts have won five girls state basketball championships, the last one coming during the 2012-2013 season.

Simental scored 10 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter and was 6-for-6 from the free throw — 4-for-4 in the final 58.3 seconds of the game.

“I practice free throws all the time and coach (Lucero) emphasizes free throws,” the senior Semintal said. “We all work on free throws and I think it makes it easier knowing my teammates trust me and I just knocked them down.”

The first half was sluggish as West had a 20-12 lead. The Cyclones controlled the tempo once again after they came out of the locker room, but the Colts kept hanging around and cut the deficit to 35-29 on Jenny Hugins’ 3-pointer at 4:24 of the fourth quarter. Hugins had a team-best 15 points for the Colts.

South kept applying the pressure and when Jaylyn Duran made a bucket the Colts still were within six points – 42-36 with 1:17 remaining.

Simental was fouled on West’s next possession, and made two free throws with 58.3 ticks left and two more at the 32-second mark. The latter two gave the Cyclones a 46-38 edge and the Colts would get no closer than eight points before the final buzzer.

“We wanted to keep the lead so we could win,” Simental said.

Sanchez scored all her points on 3-pointers — her last trey was with 3:26 on the clock.

“It feels great to get this win at South,” Sanchez said. “My teammates were setting me up (for shots) and I was able to knock them down for them.”

South played the game without its veteran coach Shannan Lane, who didn’t attend the game because of a family emergency, but senior Colt post player Sissy Hall wasn’t making any excuses for the defeat.

“We knew coach had her family emergency and we wanted to (win) for her family,” Hall said. “We just had a tough game. We tried fighting back, but it didn’t end up how we wanted. Our shots started to fall toward the end, but by that time it was too late.”

  • Canon City takes over atop 4A girls basketball rankings

Marissa McIntosh and Canon City are now No. 1 in the 4A poll. (Brandon Hopper)

Canon City is the new No. 1 team in CHSAANow.com’s Class 4A girls basketball rankings.

The Tigers are the lone remaining unbeaten team (17-0) in 4A, and they got 12 of the 17 first-place votes this week.

Former No. 1 Valor Christian was upset by D’Evelyn last week, and dropped to No. 2. D’Evelyn moved up to No. 5.

Elsewhere, the four other No. 1 teams remained the same: ThunderRidge (5A), Sterling (3A), Peyton (2A) and Kit Carson (1A).

Faith Christian has taken over as the new No. 1 team in the Class 3A boys basketball rankings, while Resurrection Christian is now atop the 2A poll.

Faith (12-1) received 11 of the 14 first-place votes in 3A to leap over former No. 1 Colorado Springs Christian in the CHSAANow.com poll. The Eagles totalled 128 points to CSCS’s 124. CSCS is No. 2 this week.

The 3A poll added No. 8 St. Mary’s, which knocked off Colorado Springs Christian last week, and No. 10 Moffat County.

Resurrection Christian (12-0) got seven of the 10 first-place votes in 2A to jump Sanford. Voters were apparently impressed by the way the Cougars handled then-No. 3 Highland on Friday, moving them up over Sanford, which is also unbeaten (11-0).

2A added Yuma at No. 9 this week.

The other No. 1 teams stayed put: Regis Jesuit (5A), Longmont (4A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

The 5A ranking added Fossil Ridge at No. 10, Denver South joined 4A at No. 9, and 1A added Sierra Grande (No. 9).
