  • Football roundup: Columbine edges Bear Creek in 2 OTs

    Nine minutes remained in the fourth quarter on Friday night, and Columbine led Bear Creek 28-7. The Rebels would win 43-42 an hour and five minutes later.

    Wait, what?

    Despite nearly letting the game slip through its fingers, Columbine battled through double overtime to outlast Bear Creek.

    “I was proud of how our kids stepped up and did fight, and made plays at the end, just enough to win it,” Columbine coach Andy Lowry told ColoradoPreps.com’s Scoreboard Show after the game. “Our kids just never gave up and our offense just made plays at the end in overtime, and we squeaked one out.”

    Bear Creek was shut out until five minutes remained in the third quarter, and actually trailed 21-0 at that point. But the Bears’ rally really didn’t start until six minutes remained in regulation, when they cut it to 28-14. After an onside kick recovery, and two more scores, it was suddenly tied up and heading to overtime.

    “I give Bear Creek a lot of credit for just fighting and playing hard,” Lowry said. “Their coaches did a good job, and they made a lot of plays. We just couldn’t finish in that fourth quarter.”

    After blowing the late lead, “We were down a little bit,” Lowry said, “but we just talked to (the team) about how this is a good challenge for us to be able to grow up and face some adversity and have to fight for something.”

    Both teams scored in the first overtime, and then Bear Creek converted on its offensive possession in the second. So did Columbine — but the Rebels opted to go for two, and Columbine’s junior quarterback, Jake Lowry, kept the ball to convert for the win.

    “My coaches were calling for it, saying, ‘Go for two! Go for two!’” Andy Lowry said. “We just hadn’t stopped them for quite a few possessions in a row. The offense was doing well, and they were over-loading one side, and we just decided to put it in Jake’s hands.

    “He made a great play and got in the end zone. You just hate to miss an extra point or something like that and end something that way, so we kept it in our offense’s hands.”

    4A: (9) Fort Collins 13, (8) Windsor 12

    Windsor led 6-0 at halftime and later 12-7 in the fourth, but Fort Collins quarterback Kyler Sigsbee found Dawson Johnson for the winning 5-yard score with six minutes remaining.

    The Lambkins’ defense recovered a Windsor fumble on the ensuing drive, and Fort Collins was able to run the clock out.

    “We we kind of using this as a barometer to find out where we rank among the 4A elite, because we definitely consider Windsor an elite 4A team,” Fort Collins coach Eric Rice told the Scoreboard Show. “I’m really glad our kids passed the test tonight.”

    Later, he added, “When you hold a team like Windsor, which has a potent offense and is good at what they do, to 12 points, you’ve got to be happy about that.”

    6-man: (2) Arickaree/Woodlin 60, (1) Stratton/Liberty 30

    Not only did Arickaree/Woodlin position itself to take over the top spot in the poll on Monday, the squad also knocked off the defending 6-man champions.

    “This is probably the biggest win since we restarted the program four years ago,” Arickaree/Woodlin coach David Saffer told the Scoreboard Show. “The seniors this year have come from the bottom and worked their way up, so it was a very good win for us.

    “We also understand that we’ve got a long season ahead of us, and we’ve got to keep going week-by-week here.”

    On the presumptive No. 1 ranking, Saffer said, “We’ve got a target on our backs. We’ve just got to stay focused and keep working.”

    5A: (6) Fairvew 35, Horizon 28

    Horizon nearly pulled off its second-straight upset.

    Nearly.

    A week after knocking off then-No. 6 Chatfield, Horizon battled with Fairview all night on Friday. Ultimately, though, the Knights secured the win.

    Horizon actually led 21-7 early in the second quarter, but Fairview rallied to tie things with 3:56 to play before the half. Then, quarterback Johnny Feauto found Tim Ryan for a 20-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half to give the Knights the lead.

    “Yeah, he’s our version of Johnny Football,” Fairview coach Tom McCartney joked on the Scoreboard Show. “He’s a tremendous player, he’s the point guard on the basketball team, he was on the baseball team that was in the Elite 8. He loves the center of attention, he loves competition. He just makes a ton of plays for us, and we’re fortunate to have Johnny Football.”

    Oh, but Horizon wasn’t done. The Hawks tied it up early in the fourth on a touchdown pass of their own.

    Jason Harvey then provided the heroics. His 14-yard run with 1:39 to play proved to be the difference — but only after the Knights’ defense stopped Horizon on fourth-and-2 from near midfield.

    “It was a good stop there to try to get that thing secure,” McCartney said.

    “The second half was just hard-fought, two teams going at it. … We just found a way.”

    1A/2A: (2) Buena Vista 21, (10) Manitou Springs 0

    Buena Vista, a 1A school, held serve at home against 2A Manitou Springs.

    “What got us going, I would say, is our defense and how they stayed disciplined,” Buena Vista coach Matt Flavin told the Scoreboard Show. “I told them we needed to stay disciplined, and they responded and stayed with the gameplan even though they came out and started running the ball on us.

    “That kind of got a spark in us to keep going. They got the offense going, as well.”

    Notes

    • In a rematch of last year’s 1A championship game, No. 1 Paonia handled No. 4 Centauri 44-0.
    • Mountain View beat Loveland 24-21 on Jayce Melby’s 24-yard field goal with six seconds left.
    • Falcon also got a late field goal to beat Pueblo West 16-14. Falcon’s 16 points were actually unanswered after trailing 14-0.
    • With Valor Christian’s loss, Dayspring Christian now solely owns the longest winning streak in the state at 15 games. The defending 8-man champions play Soroco on Saturday.
    • Poudre took down Monarch, 7-2. Monarch actually had a chance from the 9-yard-line with 0.4 seconds to play, but couldn’t score.
    • Eaglecrest, a 5A program, upset 4A No. 3 Denver South 12-6.
    • Overland rolled Legend, 54-0. The Trailblazers are now 4-0. As recently as 2011, they opened 0-4.
    • 4A No. 5 Vista Ridge edged Ponderosa 35-28.
    • Rampart beat Palmer 31-6. It was apparently the Rams’ first homecoming win in five years.
    • Boulder running back T.J. Jones rushed for 300 yards in his team’s 42-22 win over Thornton, according to BoCoPreps.com.
    • 5A No. 4 Grandview rushed for six touchdowns in its 49-27 win over Arapahoe.
    • 4A No. 4 Montrose rebounded from its first loss with a 55-0 win over Fruita Monument.
    • In a top-10 4A matchup, No. 9 Holy Family took care of No. 7 Palisade. Said coach Mike Gabriel to the Scoreboard Show: “We really needed it after last week. We played a little less than what we were capabale of last week, so this is a big win for us.”
    • There were three other top-10 games in 6-man this week besides the 1-2 showdown: No. 3 Eads 52, No. 8 Cheyenne Wells 6; No. 6 Peetz 53, No. 7 Prairie 0; No. 9 Flagler 46, No. 10 Kit Carson 22.

  • Football roundup: Central (G.J.) ends its 21-game losing streak

    It had been more than two seasons since Central (Grand Junction) had won a football game. Friday night, the Warriors ended a 21-game losing streak with a 41-32 win at Vista PEAK in Class 3A.

    The Warriors led 20-8 in the second quarter, but it quickly turned into a back-and-forth game. Vista PEAK took a 32-27 lead in the third quarter, but Tonka Littlefawn scored on a 36-yard run to give Central the lead for good at 34-32 with 9:54 to play in the game.

    Central then sealed it five minutes later when Littlefaw added a 15-yard score to make it 41-32 following a bad snap on a punt.

    Littlefawn finished with three scores. Justin Eller and Kian McAdam also had touchdowns.

    The Warriors’ last win came 46-26 at Hinkley on Nov. 3, 2011. It was on the same field — at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

    5A: (8) Regis Jesuit 48, Mullen 40

    Regis Jesuit, for the second week in a row, found itself locked in a battle late in the fourth quarter. This time, the result went the Raiders’ way.

    A week after losing 27-14 to No. 2 Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit had to put away rival Mullen, a team that refused to go away. The game featured seven ties or lead changes.

    Mullen led 21-20 at halftime and 34-27 late in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit tied it at 34 with less than a minute to play in the third.

    Alex Barnes then scored on a 14-yard run to give Regis the lead at 41-34 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, and the Raiders added another score six minutes later.

    But Mullen wasn’t done. Jovan Tafoya hit Ryan Manning on a 40-yard pass for a touchdown with two minutes to play, and the Mustangs drove down for one final chance in the final minute but couldn’t convert on fourth-and-12 from inside the 20.

    3A: (9) Roosevelt 20, Loveland 15

    Loveland seemed to have pulled the upset — but Roosevelt scored the winning touchdown with 14 seconds left.

    Loveland led 15-14 at the half, and it stayed that way for nearly the entire second half. But Roosevelt got the ball with 3:18 to play, and slowly marched its way down the field. Then, with 19 seconds left and facing third down and goal at the 1, the Roughriders’ Christian Majzack scored the winning touchdown.

    Adrian Pastrana then had a game-sealing interception on Loveland’s ensuing drive.

    The two teams combined to fumble 15 times, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald.

    2A: (5) Florence 13, (2) Faith Christian 7

    This one came down to a goal-line stand at the end. Florence held firm, and held on to win.

    Faith Christian had four shots at the end zone from inside the 10, but Florence didn’t bend. The last stop came with one second remaining.

    “We took a timeout just to regroup them,” Florence coach Jeremy Nix told ColoradoPreps.com‘s Scoreboard Show. “The boys … just bowed their necks and got after it. We rode the ‘D’ that far, so we were at the point where we could’ve called a timeout to try to save some time, but we had confidence in them and they showed up at the end there.”

    3A: (6) Discovery Canyon 44, (4) Holy Family 28

    Discovery Canyon rallied from a 20-17 deficit at halftime to pull off the upset on the road.

    “Tonight was a little bit of a heart-attack game,” Discovery Canyon coach Shawn Mitchell told the Scoreboard Show afterward.

    The Thunder actually led 14-0 early before surrendering the lead in the second quarter. But they then reeled off 28-straight points in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

    “It was a little bit of a roller-coaster ride for the coaches, to say the least,” Mitchell said.

    The third quarter scoring spree was sparked by Blake Lawrie’s touchdown return on the opening kick of the second half.

    “Boy, that really helped us,” Mitchell said. “That kind of got spirits back up again, because I think at the end of the second half, they were wondering, ‘Oh, what just happened?’ I think it was, ‘OK, we’re back where we need to be.’”

    It was the second-consecutive big win for Discovery Canyon, which beat Silver Creek in Week 1.

    8-man: (9) Springfield 36, (4) Hoehne 6

    Springfield pulled off the upset at home.

    “Both of us grounded and pounded against each other, just kept hitting and hitting and we knew one of us was going to wear out,” coach J.J. Quick told the Scoreboard Show after the game. “We knew our game was to do what they normally do: just keep pounding and banging up front.”

    Notables

    • Cedaredge upset 2A No. 10 Olathe on Friday night. The final was 2-0, and no it wasn’t a forfeit. Weather played a role, with the lone points coming on a safety from a snap through the endzone.
    • Rifle, No. 5 in Class 3A, beat Jefferson 64-6. The Bears have outscored their first three opponents by a combined 182-19.
    • Lakewood, a 5A team, knocked of 4A No. 2 Montrose 47-35 on the road. Montrose kept trying to creep back into the game, but Lakewood seemingly scored a touchdown to answer each score. We’ve got photos of the game here.
    • Fountain-Fort Carson beat Legacy in overtime, 20-14.
    • Durango trailed 14-0 but then scored 34 unanswered points en route to beating Aztec (N.M.) 34-28 on the road.
    • Montrose and Grand Junction exchanged leads five times before the half on Friday night. The Tigers trailed 22-20 at the break, but would go up 50-22 with 10:42 to play. They’d have to hold on, though, in winning 58-45. At one point, Fruita cut it to 50-45 with 2:25 to play.
    • Aspen running back Ryan Fitzgerald had 343 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries in his team’s 23-14 win over Steamboat Springs.
    • In 8-man, No. 6 Merino beat No. 5 Simla 18-16.
    • Alameda edged Skyview in overtime, 56-55. Nick Wotton had five touchdowns and 297 yards in the losing effort.
    • 2A No. 8 Lamar beat 1A No. 2 Centauri, 20-8.
    • Valley’s Victor Delgado rushed for three touchdowns as his team beat Fort Lupton 31-0.
    • Rocky Mountain Lutheran’s Zach Schlittenhart had 231 yards and four touchdowns rushing on just 11 carries as his team beat Justice 64-28.
    • Lutheran beat Frederick 52-7. Quarterback James Willis threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Eight of his passes went to Joshua Clausen, who had 157 yards and two touchdowns. Through two games, Clausen has 376 receiving yards. It’s very early, but he’s on pace to break the single-season receiving yardage record, set just last season by Fairview’s Sam Martin (1,860).

    THORNTON — Fort Collins golfer AJ Ott had a hole-in-one on the par-three No. 16 and finished with a 4-under 68 on Friday, helping the Lambkins to a fifth place finish, with an overall score of 313 among 13 teams.

    Legacy won the team event with a score of 298.

  • Legacy, Erie, Sterling on top of preseason softball rankings

    Two teams that finished runner-up a season ago head CHSAANow.com’s preseason softball rankings.

    Erie (4A) and Sterling (3A) both fell in the championship games of their respective classifications last season. A year later, they’re both the preseason favorites.

    In 5A, defending champion Legacy is the unanimous preseason No. 1. Legend, runner-up last year, is No. 2, and is followed by No. 3 Brighton, No. 4 Fossil Ridge and No. 5 Eaglecrest.

    Dakota Ridge is sixth, Douglas County is seventh and Loveland is eighth. Rock Canyon (No. 9) and Fort Collins (No. 10) round out the 5A ranking.

    Wheat Ridge, the defending 4A champion which is expected to rely on a heavy lineup this season, opens at No. 2 in that class.

    Defending 3A champion Strasburg opens at No. 3.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

  • Notebook: Girls golf mulling use of Stableford scoring

    AURORA — Girls golf may be in for a revolutionary change. The idea of introducing a Modified Stableford Scoring system is being kicked around.

    Now, the idea hasn’t even been presented to the girls golf committee yet — they meet Oct. 7 — and it would also have to clear the Legislative Council in order to be integrated into the sport. But there is gathering evidence to suggest the Stableford system would create a better experience for all players, and also speed up the pace of play.

    The Stableford system awards points for strokes in relation to par on a hole-by-hole basis, as opposed to the traditional method of simply counting strokes.

    For example, in the unmodified version, a par is worth two points, a birdie is worth three, an eagle is four, and so on. The inverse is true, as well, meaning a bogey is worth one point, and a double-bogey is worth zero. Those points are then added at the end of a round, and the player with the highest total wins the tournament.

    The major advantage here is that once a player reaches the stroke limit which awards no points — in the example above, that would be two-over-par — they simply pick up their ball and move on to the next hole. There would be no more 17s on a par-5.

    Currently, some girls golf tournaments can last as long as six hours. With golfers having the ability to pick up after a certain number of strokes, the Stableford method could drastically speed things up.

    The Stableford system also helps those just learning the game. For example, if a girl were to record a 4 for a hole on her scorecard when she actually made a 5, she would simply not get the Stableford points that hole. Normally, she would be disqualified from her entire round or tournament.

    Additionally, the system means every golfer is viable late in the tournament as a potential impact on the team score — and, more importantly, there would be no more disqualifications at regionals. (Currently, CHSAA allows coaches to decide to pull players from regionals if they are at or near double-par after nine holes.)

    Colorado would not be the first state to use a Modified Stableford System. Utah’s girls have been using it for a number of years now, and their rounds average about 4 to 4 1/2 hours.

    Utah’s system awards five points for par, meaning a golfer is awarded zero points at 5-over-par and therefore picks up their ball at that point. That also puts a birdie at six points, an eagle at seven, and a double eagle at eight. A bogie is worth four points, a double-bogie is three, a triple-bogie is two and a quadruple-bogie is one.

    Using Utah’s version of a modified system, CHSAA staff did a comparison of stroke play to Stableford scoring from the 5A and 4A state tournaments, as well as all regional events. Initial research showed that the Stableford system, while likely a more advantageous system for the general player, would not impact the top golfers.

    At the state level, the order of the top 10 individuals remained the same in both classifications, even down to those who tied. The team state champions did not change, either.

    At the regional level, the champions and top-10 remained the same.

    Utah’s scoring method will be the basis of the conversation when the Stableford system is brought up in the committee meeting. Colorado could input its own system — say, picking up at 4-over-par — but that’s the type of detail the committee would hammer out if it chose to go the Stableford route.

    This change is only being talked about for the girls’ game, where it would have the greatest impact. If the committee moved a Modified Stableford System through, the next step would be the Jan. 29 Legislative Council meeting. Conceivably, if passed there, that would be enough time to install it prior to the 2015 girls season.

    Ultimately, the girls golf committee is seeking ways to speed up its tournaments. Another option is to cut rounds down to nine holes, which would allow for afternoon events where students don’t miss school time.

    Short stuff

    • Kyle Freeland signed with the Rockies last week. The Thomas Jefferson graduate who was drafted No. 8 overall earlier this month, inked a $2.3 million signing bonus, according to MLB.com. He’ll begin his professional career in Grand Junction, the Rockies’ rookie affiliate. Their season starts Monday night.
    • Regis Jesuit shortstop Max George also signed a professional contract with the Rockies, forgoing a commitment to Oregon State. According to BaseballAmerica.com, he signed for $620,000. George will start in Grand Junction, as well.
    • Wheat Ridge girls lacrosse’s Gianna Ossello, a first-team all-state pick, was the lone Colorado player picked to the Under Armour All-American games. The midfielder, who is headed to Duke, will play on the South Team. She’ll play in the game on July 12 in Baltimore.
    • Chaparral’s Colton McCaffrey was the 5A boys lacrosse player of the year, and is also an All-American. He played in the Adrenaline All-American Game on June 7 — along with Cherry Creek’s Matt Goettelman, Wheat Ridge’s Jensen Makarov, Mullen’s Nick Phillips and Arapahoe’s Nick Runberg. McCaffrey, bound for DU, had two goals.
    • Loveland swimmer Brooke Hansen committed to Texas last week, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. She is a two-time state champion, winning the 100 breaststroke as a sophomore, then the 200 individual medley this past winter. Hansen will be a senior this fall.
    • Mountain Vista baseball’s Jack Strunc, a shortstop, announced on Twitter that he committed to Washington State. Strunc is an outgoing senior. He’ll join teammate Nick Leonard in Pullman.
    • Greg Maestas, the only wrestling coach Grandview has even known, retired earlier this month. He was at the school for 16 years, and spent 38 coaching in the sport. “He has left a legacy that will be missed,” athletic director Jamee Ulitzky said in a statement. “Words cannot express our appreciation for all of his work and commitment to the sport.” Said Maestas, to the Aurora Sentinel: “It’s time. I enjoyed it, I had some great kids, great parents and good administrators.”
    • Ashour Peera has left Gateway’s football program to become the coach at East Ridge in Florida, according to the Sentinel. He spent one season as the Olympians’ coach, and went 6-4. East Ridge is a 7A school in Florida, meaning Peera will return to the state where he coached prior to moving to Colorado. Here’s our updated list of football coaching changes this offseason.
    • Bear Creek has hired David Berghoefer as its boys basketball coach.
    • The state softball tournaments will stay at the Aurora Sports Complex this fall.
    • Florida is mandating the use of helmets in girls lacrosse. The new rule will be effective in 2015.
    • Poudre School District hired Ron Alexander as district athletic director, according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
    • Former Grand Junction defensive end Austin Berk has left the Colorado State football program after his freshman season. He told the Fort Collins Coloradoan that he needs “some time to get my body back to 100 percent.” Berk has had problems with his hip.
