  • Girls basketball rankings: Three new No. 1 teams atop polls

The CHSAANow.com girls basketball polls saw three new No. 1 teams crowned this week, including Highlands Ranch, who takes over the No. 1 spot in Class 5A.

It is the biggest shift at the top of the polls since the start of basketball season.

The big story of the week came as ThunderRidge fell to Cherry Creek, 32-27. The Grizzlies had held the top spot in 5A since the preseason poll. But the Bruins couldn’t capitalize on the win. They turned around and lost their next game to Broomfield, which kept them firmly in the No. 7 spot this week.

Poudre and Loveland were the two new teams added to the 5A rankings as they come in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Sand Creek was one of two teams to hold on the top this week, as they remain No. 1 in the 4A poll. Mesa Ridge jumped from No. 3 to No. 2, continuing their climb and showing that they intend to be a force this year, much like they were in 2014 when they won the 4A title.

Joining the 4A rankings this week is Pueblo East, who comes in at No. 10. The Eagles started the season at 1-2, but have played well enough lately to earn the votes needed to crack the top 10.

Pagosa Springs takes the top spot in the 3A rankings away from Manitou Springs, despite the Mustangs starting 4-0.

In fact, the Mustangs received six first-place votes last week, only to get two this week. Manitou falls to No. 3 in this week’s poll.

Lamar made a two-spot jump this week to come in at No. 7 and Grand Valley comes in at No. 10 as the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings.

Yuma remains firmly at the top of the 2A rankings and had a nice showing last week, going 3-0. The big jump in that class was Wray leaping from No. 9 to No. 5. They got the attention of the voters by taking Yuma to the limit and only falling to the Indians 69-66. Highland and Sanford break in as the two newcomers to the 2A polls, landing at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

With Idalia’s 48-43 loss to Otis, the Wolves fell out of the top spot in the 1A rankings. That helped Otis break into the top 10 where they come in at No. 7 this week. Kim at No. 8 and Briggsdale at No. 10 also joined this week’s rankings.

Sangre de Cristo takes to the top spot this week, jumping from No. 3 to No. 1.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Ralston Valley jumps up in 5A

Just like the boys, the top teams in all five CHSAANow.com rankings all held their positions this week.

ThunderRidge, Sand Creek, Manitou Springs, Yuma and Idalia all enter the second the week of the season as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes. But with competition starting off fast and furious in Week 1, it was inevitable that some changes would indeed occur.

In Class 5A, ThunderRidge looked like a top team as they jumped out to a 3-0 start, but it was Ralston Valley that started especially hot, going 3-0 last week and capping the run with a 55-29 win over Cherry Creek, who comes in at No. 7 this week. The Mustangs jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 this week.

Dakota Ridge is the lone newcomer to the rankings on the strength of wins against Rampart and Loveland. The Eagles land at No. 9.

Despite dropping their home opener to Poudre, Sand Creek remains the No. 1 team in 4A. They rebounded nicely with a win over Sierra.

Mesa Ridge looks like they could be returning to their state championship form of 2014 as they jumped from No. 8 to No. 3 and even snagged a first place vote in the process.

Two new teams jumped in the 4A poll this week with Berthoud (No. 9) and Golden (No. 10) all join the party.

Manitou Springs sure played like 3A’s  No. 1 team during their 74-34 win over Bishop Machebeuf. They followed that up with a win over Colorado Academy, jumping out to a quick 2-0 start.

The top eight teams in the 3A rankings went for a combined 13-0 last week, easily the best showing for any class.

A couple of 3-0 starts from Lamar and Trinidad helped both teams join the rankings this week, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Like Sand Creek, Yuma held on to their spot in the 2A rankings, despite an early loss. They still garnered nine first place votes this week.

The top six spots from the preseason rankings went unchanged this week. Although there was some shifting in the bottom three spots, Wray was the only new team to the poll as they jumped in at No. 9.

Prairie and Antonio join this week’s 1A poll at No. 6 and No. 10. Idalia held on to the top spot, though not unanimously as Kit Carson took one first place vote.

Flagler made the biggest jump in 1A this week, going from No. 8 to No. 4.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • ThunderRidge, Sand Creek among No. 1 teams in preseason girls basketball rankings

    ThunderRidge Monarch girls basketball

Three teams which finished second last season now open this season as No. 1 in their respective classification.

ThunderRidge, Sand Creek, Manitou Springs, Yuma and Idalia are the preseason No. 1 teams in CHSAANow.com’s girls basketball rankings, which were released on Friday. Of those, ThunderRidge, Sand Creek and Yuma finished as runner-up in 2014-15. Idalia is the lone defending champion of the bunch.

ThunderRidge, led by new coach Matt Asik and Wyoming commit Taylor Rusk, received 13 of the 17 first-place votes to lead the Class 5A poll. The Grizzlies return four of their five leading scorers, including Rusk, a first-team all-state pick in 5A last season.

Grandview and super junior Michaela Onyenwere, also a first-team all-state pick, are No. 2 in the preseason. The Wolves received two first-place votes.

Highlands Ranch and its trio of Division I commits are third, while defending champion Broomfield is fourth. Lakewood rounds out the top-5.

Also ranked in 5A’s preseason top-10 are No. 6 Cherry Creek, No. 7 Ralston Valley, No. 8 Monarch, No. 9 Fossil Ridge and No. 10 Regis Jesuit.

    Sand Creek Longmont girls basketball
Sand Creek is No. 1 in Class 4A. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

In 4A, Sand Creek leads the way with 13 of the 19 first-place votes. The Scorpions, who lost to Valor Christian in last season’s 4A title game, return their top five leading scorers. That includes Division I commits Liah Davis and Oliana Squires. Both girls earned all-state recognition last season, with Squires making the first team.

Defending champion Valor Christian is second, with three first-place votes, and D’Evelyn is No. 3. Longmont and Holy Family round out the top-5.

Manitou Springs was a Final 4 team a season ago. On Friday, the Mustangs received five of the 11 first-place votes to lead 3A’s preseason rankings. All nine girls return from last season’s varsity roster, including first-team all-state pick Shelby Megyeri.

Sterling, last season’s 3A runner-up, is second, and defending champion Pagosa Springs is No. 3. Eaton and Lutheran round out the top 5.

Yuma heads the preseason 2A poll with eight of the 10 first-place votes. The team graduated just two seniors and returns more than 80 percent of its offense. Logan Hixon was a first-team all-state pick in 2014-15.

Defending champion Akron is No. 3 to begin the year, just behind No. 2 Paonia.

In 1A, the reigning champ Idalia received nine of 10 first-place votes to lead the preseason ranking. The Wolves are led by returning first-team all-state pick Reagan Shaffer. Their top three scorers are back.

Kit Carson is No. 2, and last season’s runner-up, Sangre de Cristo, is No. 3.

  • Fort Collins’ Hunter Paugh wins 5A boys golf; Regis Jesuit captures team title

FORT COLLINS — Hunter Paugh had been here before.

Last season, the Fort Collins golfer was leading Class 5A’s boys golf state tournament after the first day. But, after holding a one-stroke lead with a score of 69, he shot 77 on Day 2, and finished third.

On Tuesday, Paugh was in the same position — leading after Round 1 — although his 67 was a more comfortable four-stroke lead over teammate AJ Ott and three others. And yet, Paugh felt the pressure early and had a double-bogey on the seventh hole. Soon after, his lead was only one stroke over Ott and Regis Jesuit’s Andrew McCormick — 2-under to 1-under — through 10 holes.

That’s when the senior, poised and seasoned, rose to the occasion. He birdied the 11th and 12th holes, giving him a three-shot lead, then he played sound the rest of the way.

It was enough to clinch his first state championship with an even 71 round, giving him 138 total, four-under, and a three-stroke victory over Ott. (Find complete results here.)

“Last year I posted a really good first round,” Paugh said. “I started off pretty solid, but the rest of the second day I just didn’t do what I needed to do. But that gave me good experience going into today. I knew I wasn’t going to let it go this time.”

After his early nerves faded, Paugh was right in his comfort zone and it’s easy to see why as he was playing at his home course, the Fort Collins Country Club.

“There came pressure with knowing the course, but I feel like it was an advantage knowing the greens, knowing where to hit the ball and where not to hit the ball,” he said.

“He knew where he needed to land the ball, he knew where he wanted it to be for his next shot, his putts, and how the greens would roll,” Fort Collins coach Kyle Tregoning said. “He played the course today and he didn’t worry about the other guys that were out there.”

Paugh, a University of South Dakota commit, felt overjoyed to put the finishing touches on a fantastic career for Fort Collins. He was a four-time state qualifier, on top of back-to-back top-3 finishes.

“Winning state is big for anyone, but after last year — having a chance at it, but I didn’t get it done,” he said. “Going into this year at my home course, I’ve been expected to play well. I filled those expectations. It’s a cool feeling.”

His teammate, Ott, capped his career as a four-time top-10 finisher at the state tournament. He will continue his golf career as a Colorado State Ram.

“AJ, he’s one of the best players I’ve ever played with or played against and he’s a great friend, as well,” Paugh said. “I knew if anyone was going to get it done and have a shot at me, it was going to be him. It’s always fun playing against him and it’s cool to be one and two at state this year.”

The individual champion was, for the most part, decided long before a team was crowned.

The day began with a two-way tie atop the standings as Lakewood and Regis Jesuit both shot 6-over on Monday. Fossil Ridge was third at 8-over and Coronado, the defending team champions, was fourth at 10-over.

Pretty quickly the Cougars — who returned all four golfers from the 2014 title team — made a major push up the standings. They even took a commanding five-stroke lead over Regis at one point, but it was still early. The Raiders rallied to take a two-stroke lead through 10 holes with Coronado through 13. At that point Lakewood seemed out of it, down nine strokes, three behind Fossil Ridge.

Slowly but surely, Lakewood chipped away at the deficit until it was Coronado at 16-over, Regis 16-over, and the Tigers 17-over with three holes to play for Lakewood and Regis and Coronado on 18. After the next hole, there was a three-way tie.

That’s when one of Regis’ top players, Tyler Zhang, walked up to the 18th hole with virtually everything on the line.

“Tyler is the guy that broke the logjam, the three-way tie,” Regis coach Craig Rogers said. “He had a birdie on 18. I don’t know if I’ll ever see someone play a hole better than that, especially under the circumstances.

“He wasn’t sure if he wanted to hit driver or not, because we were tied, but he hit one of the best drives I’ve ever seen a high school kid hit. It was right down the middle. Then, he was 95 yards out. He placed it 7 feet away from the hole. The putt never left the cup the whole time. He absolutely drained it.”

In one of the closest finishes ever, Zhang’s birdie was the difference as the Raiders claimed their fifth state championship in six years with a score of 15-over. Coronado and Lakewood both went 16-over as Fossil Ridge was fourth in 19-over.

After a streak of four straight titles from 2010-2013, the Raiders were the runner-up last year.

“I’m just happy for these kids,” Rogers said. “I was thrilled with second, but it was tough on the boys to feel like they lost the run. It’s a little pressure and stress. In golf, you can get first place by winning it or someone else losing it. I’m just happy that somebody won it. Nobody gave it away.”

Andrew McCormick (tie for 3rd place, 1-over) and Zhang (tie for 5th place, 2-over) are the typical headliners of the team, but Rogers was equally proud of Cal McCoy (tie for 38th, 14-over) and Bennett Rogers (tie for 42nd, 15-over), his son. McCoy and Rogers both fought early adversity in their rounds before settling down and playing solid on the back nine.

In the end, it was enough for Regis to claim their sixth state championship overall in boys golf. They are now tied for third most in Colorado history with Mullen and Fort Collins. Cherry Creek and Kent Denver have both won eight.

Coach Rogers walked away overjoyed, but also relieved to have beaten teams the caliber of Lakewood and Coronado.

“Lakewood and Coronado were playing really, really well,” he said. “They are wonderful teams, very talented, and they did nothing wrong. We just happened to get a couple birdies at the end.”

Fort Collins senior Hunter Paugh fired a first-round 67 to seize the lead at the Class 5A boys golf state tournament on Monday.

Paugh had five birdies in his round, and just one bogey. He was sitting a 1-under heading into the final three holes of his round, and birdied all three to finish at 4-under.

Paugh finished third at last year’s 5A state tournament.

His Fort Collins teammate, AJ Ott, is one of four players tied in second at even par after the first day. The others: Lakewood’s Griffin Barela, Regis Jesuit’s Andrew McCormick and Mountain Vista’s Austin Hardman.

Lakewood and Regis Jesuit are tied for the team lead after the first day. Both are 6-over. Fossil Ridge is third at 8-over. Coronado, the defending champion, is fourth at 10-over, and Mountain Vista sits at 13-over.

The Eagles finished with four players in the top eight of the entire field. The team championship is only determined by three of the four scores for each team member.

Philip Lee (69), Tim Amundson (71), Coby Welch (73) and David Leede (75) have the Eagles sitting at 3-under par for the tournament, 18 strokes better than Evergreen, which sits in second place.

With all three teammates within six strokes of each other, they have a chance to wrap up a team title and each vie for the individual championship as well.

The Eagles shot 8-under as a team last year at Walking Stick in Pueblo to win the team championship.

3A: Peak to Peak teammates to battle for individual title

Friday is going to be quite a day for Peak to Peak teammates Nishant Datta and Sam Taylor.

The Pumas hold a 10-stroke lead over Kent Denver in the race for the 3A team golf title, so Datta and Taylor will spend the bulk of their time trying to figure out which one can add an individual championship to their trophy case.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

They both shot an even round of 72, putting each of them at par going into Tuesday’s final round of the tournament. And they both got there the same way. They were sitting at 2-under par going into the 18th hole, only to make double-bogey to bring them back to even.

“It’s unfortunate that a lot of teammates had to finish with the same tragedy on the last hole,” Taylor said. “I’m really proud of my team that we were able to step up today and get some things going.”

As a team, the Pumas lead the field at at six-over, which is 10 strokes better than Kent Denver. Defending team champion Sterling is currently tied for 11th place at 44-over.

Defending individual champion, Yale Kim (Dawson School) is in 13th place in the individual standings. He sank a birdie putt on 18 to finish with a 7-over 79 on the day.
