  • Football roundup: Monarch handles Broomfield in 4A

Monarch made a statement to rest of 4A football on Friday night: Yep, they’re still a force in the classification.

The third-ranked Coyotes handled hard-charging and eighth-ranked Broomfield, 48-12, behind an onslaught of points in the first half.

“We feel pretty good about beating those guys,” Monarch coach Phil Bravo  told ColoradoPreps.com’s Built Ford Tough Scoreboard Show. “They have such a good team and a good program with a rich tradition. When you get a chance to beat ’em, it feels real good.”

Senior running back Ethan Marks had well over 200 rushing yards, while quarterback Jay MacIntyre and Kidd Soole also got heavily involved in the offense.

“We were getting them from all different vantage points and executed real well offensively,” Bravo said.

Four weeks ago, Monarch also had a big halftime lead against Montrose, but surrendered 33 second-half points in a 39-34 loss.

This time around, at halftime, “I wrote on the board, ’33 second-half points.’ That’s what we gave up to Montrose,” Bravo said. “I said, ‘I don’t want that in the second half.’ Our kids played really, really well in the second half defensively. We got ’em three-and-out, we got the ball and went up and scored and then held ’em again. We got that clock running early in the fourth quarter, and it felt really good to play well in that second half with a big lead at halftime.”

Elsewhere, No. 5 Pueblo South beat Pueblo West 31-21.

“They’re a good football program and they’re well-coached,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told the Scoreboard Show. “They play a brand of football that’s physical and they like to get after you. Our kids, they wanted that challenge and they stepped up to it.

“They had an opportunity to get back to where we want to be — and that’s well known around Pueblo as far as the football program is concerned. Hopefully, now, we’ll get a little recognition around the state level, too.”

4A’s top-ranked team, Montrose, rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to beat No. 6 Durango 14-10.

In 5A, No. 1 Valor Christian rolled Rock Canyon 56-6. Quarterback A.J. Cecil threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. Five different Eagles scored on the ground, including Christian McCaffrey, who carried just three times for 76 yards. He was also on the receiving end of two of Cecil’s scoring passes.

Quarterback Anders Hill threw for five touchdowns — all in the first half — as No. 2 Fairview handled rival Boulder 69-3.

No. 4 Cherry Creek had to stave off a late rally from Eaglecrest to seal a 41-34 win.

In 3A, No. 8 Silver Creek took care of No. 5 Mead 45-13 in a highly-anticipated game. Mead had been unbeaten going into the contest, but Ben Sjobakken threw two touchdown passes to pace the Silver Creek offense.

    Tenth-ranked Rifle beat No. 7 Delta, 52-27.

1A’s No. 2 team, Limon, finished the regular season a perfect 9-0 with a 42-13 win over Crowley County. Kerigan Kappel had more than 200 yards, and Gavin Liggett added 115.

“I was really pleased with the balance we had with different guys carrying the ball,” Limon coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Scoreboard Show.

Winners in 8-man’s crossover games included No. 4 Simla, No. 5 Caliche and No. 8 Sargent.

Peetz upset No. 2 Arickaree in a 6-man crossover, while No. 5 Otis beat Briggsdale.

Playoffs begin next week for 5A, 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man teams. Brackets come out Sunday.

Mountain Range, 7-1 this season, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in Class 5A.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 10, are riding a four-game winning streak, including a 22-16 decision against Rocky Mountain last week. Their lone loss this season came at Grand Junction on Sept. 20.

Valor Christian remained atop the 5A ranking with 19 of the 22 first-place votes. Fairview, which got the other three first-place votes, stayed in the No. 2 spot following its big win over Pomona, and continued to be followed by No. 3 Regis Jesuit, No. 4 Cherry Creek and No. 5 ThunderRidge.

Columbine stayed in sixth this week, while Cherokee Trail bumped up two spots to seventh. Pomona remained in eighth and Grand Junction moved up to ninth after beating 4A No. 1 Montrose.

Despite the loss, Montrose remained atop the 4A ranking. Pine Creek moved up to No. 2, jumping Monarch, which fell to No. 3.

Coronado is now atop the 3A poll after Palisade’s loss to Delta. Discovery Canyon is second and Palisade dropped to third.

Delta joined the ranking at No. 7, as did Roosevelt (No. 9) following its win over then-No. 3 Silver Creek. Silver Creek dropped to No. 8 this week.

Grand Junction was idle last week. No matter, the Tigers have rejoined this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in Class 5A.

Grand Junction (5-2), last ranked Sept. 9, is No. 10 in the poll. The Tigers took the spot vacated by Arapahoe after the Warriors were upset by Lakewood last week. Up next for GJ: Unbeaten Montrose, which is No. 1 in 4A.

Valor Christian continued to lead the 5A poll, and received 22 of the 23 first-place votes. Fairview remained in second, and Regis Jesuit in third. Cherry Creek is fourth and ThunderRidge fifth after the two schools swapped places.

Columbine (No. 6) and Chatfield (No. 7) also stayed put, while Pomona moved up to No. 8. The Panthers, coming off a win over rival Ralston Valley, have a big showdown with Fairview on Friday afternoon.

Montrose is a unanimous pick atop 4A, and Monarch remained in that poll’s No. 2 spot. Pine Creek bumped up to No. 3, Falcon is fourth and Pueblo South rounds out the top 5.

The weekend’s turmoil has bled over into CHSAANow.com’s football polls.

Though, when a total of 17 ranked teams lose in a week — including the No. 1s in classes 5A, 4A and 3A — it’s not hard to see change coming. So, yes, there are new teams atop 5A (Valor Christian), 4A (Montrose) and 3A (Rifle).

But the change didn’t only affect the top. In 5A, where three of the top four teams lost last week, that meant Chatfield, Fairview, Cherokee Trail and Regis Jesuit all made big jumps.

Valor Christian leads the 5A poll for the second time this season. The Eagles are 4-1, but unbeaten against Colorado competition this season, and received 21 of the 24 first-place votes.

Chatfield moved up to No. 2 from No. 5, Fairview went from No. 7 to No. 3 and Cherokee Trail moved into fourth from sixth. Regis Jesuit, which last week knocked off then-No. 1 ThunderRidge, went from No. 9 to No. 5.

ThunderRidge dropped to sixth, and is followed by Grandview and Cherry Creek.

The 5A poll added two new teams this week: No. 9 Pomona and No. 10 Arapahoe.

In 4A, Montrose takes over following its come-from-behind win over then-No. 1 Monarch. The Indians were a unanimous No. 1 pick, getting all 21 first-place votes.

Falcon is No. 2 this week, and Monarch dropped to No. 3. Loveland stayed at No. 4, Montbello moved up one place to round out the top-5.

Pueblo Centennial (No. 9) and Longmont (No. 10) are 4A’s newcomers this week.

Rifle takes over atop the 3A ranking following Silver Creek’s loss to Frederick. New to 3A this week are Mead (No. 7) and D’Evelyn (No. 10).

Brush continued to lead 2A’s poll, which added Bennett at No. 10.

Likewise, Buena Vista remained atop in 1A. That poll added Paonia (No. 8) and Jefferson (No. 9). Jefferson’s addition is especially noteworthy because the Saints were a combined 3-85 from 2004-12.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Brush in charge of 2A football poll after beating Platte Valley

    (David Samples/lastingimagesbydave.com)
    (David Samples/lastingimagesbydave.com)

Brush took down former No. 1 Platte Valley on Friday. Monday, the Beetdiggers took its spot atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 2A football poll.

Brush, which won the game 28-10, was ranked second last week. It received all 10 first-place votes in the poll. Platte Valley dropped to third, behind Kent Denver.

The 2A poll added Faith Christian (No. 8) and Aspen (No. 10) this week.

In 5A, ThunderRide continued to lead the way and received 13 first-place votes to No. 2 Valor Christian’s 11. Columbine remained in third, and Ralston Valley stayed at No. 4.

Chatfield moved up from seventh to fifth, and is followed by No. 6 Cherokee Trail and No. 7 Fairview. Grandview is eighth, Regis Jesuit is ninth, and Cherry Creek rejoined the ranking at No. 10.

Monarch stayed atop 4A’s ranking, but there’s a new No. 2 team in that poll: Montrose, which moved up from third. It’s excellent timing, considering the two teams play Friday.

Falcon is third this week, followed by Loveland, Wheat Ridge and Montbello, which beat former No. 2 Denver South on Saturday. South dropped to No. 8.

Montbello and Wheat Ridge play Friday.

Pine Creek was the lone new team to the 4A poll.

The 3A ranking added No. 9 Delta and No. 10 Evergreen. Silver Creek remained at No. 1.

In 1A, Meeker (No. 10) was the lone newcomer.

There were no new teams to the 8-man poll, but 6-man added Briggsdale (No. 4).

  • No. 2 Limon wins its homecoming over Burlington

    (Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)
    (Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)

LIMON — The Limon Badgers, ranked No. 2 in 1A by CHSAANow.com, totaled more than 500 yards total offense in downing Burlington 35-14 at Lloyd Gaskill Field. The game was Limon High School’s 51st Homecoming win in 68 tries.

With the win, Coach Mike O’Dwyer’s Badgers start the season 4-0, while Glynn Higgs’ Cougars fall to 1-3.

But miscues by the Badgers throughout the game gave life to the Cougars, who came back in the second half to make a game of it.

In the first half, Gavin Liggett was the key to Limon’s 21-0 lead. At 9:12 in the first quarter, Liggett scored from 21 yards out, but his PAT try missed, leaving Limon up 6-0 after one quarter. Liggett, who scored on a 38-yard run late in the second, ran for 117 yards in the first half.

Kerigan Kappel scored early in the second on a 6-yard run and Liggett added a two-point conversion to make it 14-0 in favor of the home team. Liggett’s 38-yard sideline to sideline romp and subsequent PAT made it 21-0 Limon at halftime.

Burlington, looking for a big defensive stand late in the third, saw Ligget slip around left end and ramble 92 yards for a touchdown. His PAT made it 28-0 and Limon looked to be cruising along.

The Cougars kept the pressure on, though, when Martin Torres rumbled off tackle for 58 yards and a score with 40.7 seconds left in the third. A Jonathan Lopez PAT made the score 28-7.

The fourth quarter saw both teams move up and down the field, with Burlington ultimately threatening at the 1-yard-line at 3:20 when Chance Carlin and Eloy Sandoval missed on a handoff. Liggett recovered the fumble and it looked like the game might be over. One the very next play, Liggett mishandled the snap and the Cougars’ Lopez fell on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. His PAT made it 28-14 and the Cougars were right back in the game with 3:10 remaining.

    (Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)
    (Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)

Several long passes and timely runs had Limon at Burlington’s 20-yard line with about 1:40 left. Liggett took a knee, but on the next two plays, Burlington’s defense stifled two attempts by Kappel. So, with 1:01 remaining Liggett dropped back to pass and hit Kappel in the end zone for a 22-yard score. His PAT made it 35-14.

Carlin moved the Cougars to midfield, but his final last gasp throw went just out of the reach of Mitchell Richardson and time ran out.

In end, Liggett had run nine times for 214 yards and three TDs, while completing 6-of-11 passes for 105 yards and the scoring toss to Kappel. He was intercepted by linebacker Josh Satterly in the third quarter.

Kappel had 155 yards on 23 carries and one TD, but also caught the TD pass. Luke Meier added 58 yards for the Badgers, while James Larson had 13. In all, Limon ran for 440 yards on 39 carries. The Badgers lost four of five fumbles.

    (Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)
    (Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)

For the Cougars, Torres pounded out 108 yards on 12 carries including his 58-yard TD run. Sandoval had 68 yards on 16 carries, while Nik Reese added 4 yards and Carlin 2. Carlin was 9-of-17 for 96 yards and one interception. Burlington lost one of two fumbles.

Limon plays host to Las Animas next Friday at 7:00 p.m., while Burlington plays host to Calhan Friday at 6:00 p.m.

  • Douglas County joins 5A football poll following big upset

    (Kay Livingstone)
Douglas County is ranked sixth in this week’s 5A poll. (Kay Livingstone)

Douglas County took down then-No. 3 Cherry Creek on Monday night. Tuesday afternoon, the Huskies find themselves ranked.

Douglas County jumped into this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in 5A at No. 6. It is the first time this season the Huskies have been ranked.

Cherry Creek, meanwhile, dropped all the way out in something of a surprise.

Cherokee Trail returned to the 5A ranking following a week on the outside looking in. The Cougars are eighth.

ThunderRidge held on to 5A’s top spot — but only narrowly. The Grizzles edged No. 2 Valor Christian by two overall points, despite beating then-No. 4 Grandview last week.

Columbine bumped up to third from fifth, and Ralston Valley went from sixth to fourth. Regis Jesuit rounds out the top five.

Chatfield is No. 7, Fairview is No. 9, and Grandview dropped from No. 4 to No. 10 following its loss to ThunderRidge.

Monarch continued to lead the 4A poll, which added Montbello for the first time this season, at ninth. Along with Denver South (No. 2 in 4A) and Denver West (No. 9 in 2A), it means Denver Public Schools has three ranked schools.

  • ThunderRidge moves up to No. 1 in 5A football ranking

    (Ray Chen/MaxPreps.com)
    (Ray Chen/MaxPreps.com)

The expectations were already high. Now, perhaps, things have been kicked up a notch.

ThunderRidge, coming off a 36-18 win over then-No. 3 Ralston Valley, took over atop the CHSAANow.com football poll in 5A this week. The Grizzlies had been No. 2, but jumped Valor Christian, which lost in overtime to Bingham (Utah).

Valor has yet to play an in-state opponent this season, and the four-time defending champion still received half of the first-place votes. Still, the Eagles are No. 2 this week.

Cherry Creek had its own big win last week — over then-No. 6 Pomona — and moved up on place to No. 3.

Grandview (No. 4) also moved up one place, and faces ThunderRidge this week.

Columbine went from No. 7 to No. 5 to round out the top five.

Ralston Valley settled in sixth following its loss, Regis Jesuit is seventh and Fairview is eighth.

The 5A top-ten is rounded out by two newcomers: Chatfield (No. 9) and Grand Junction (No. 10).

In 4A, Monarch continued its hold on the No. 1 spot. Denver South moved up to second, and the ranking added Standley Lake at No. 9.

Class 1A also got a new No. 1 team this week with Buena Vista taking over at the top.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
