The Classical Academy picked up a huge win over preseason No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain last week. Monday, the Titans entered CHSAANow.com’s Class 4A boys soccer ranking — all the way up at No. 2.

TCA, in its first 4A season, was runner-up in 3A last year. It beat Cheyenne Mountain, the reigning 4A champ and preseason favorite, 1-0 last Thursday.

But they were just one of four news teams to enter the 4A poll this week. Other newcomers included No. 5 D’Evelyn, No. 7 Pueblo Centennial and No. 10 Wheat Ridge.

The ranking also got a new No. 1 team in Air Academy.

The 5A poll added three new teams: No. 7 Fort Collins, No. 8 Broomfield and No. 10 Rocky Mountain. Pine Creek held firm at No. 1 in that ranking.

In 3A, Faith Christian (No. 9) and Manitou Springs (No. 10) joined the poll, which continued to be led by Salida.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

MANITOU SPRINGS – It was so close to being a rematch of the Class 2A state championship game.

As the 2014 high school football season got underway this week, it was seen as one of the marquee games on the schedule. And after fighting through a sloppy first half, it was clear why as the No. 2 Faith Christian Eagles (1-0) topped the No. 4 Manitou Springs Mustangs (0-1) 18-15 Friday night.

It was an encouraging win for Faith Christian and coach Ralph Nance and tough loss for new Manitou Springs coach Monte Gutowski. What started as a sloppy contest rife with turnovers turned into an intense battle that could’ve seen either side emerge with the win.

“Turnovers always make a difference in a game. Every time,” Gutowski said. “You commit turnovers and it’s going to cost you. Shoot, everyone knows that.”

The Mustangs’ defense started strong, forcing and recovering a fumble on the first Eagles drive of the game. A solid running attack by senior Malachi Peterson put the ball inside the Eagles 15-yard line. Facing a 4th and goal, Gutowski elected to go for the touchdown, but to no avail.

With the ball back in the Eagles’ hands they began their slow march down the field, only to have Hunter Warren pick-off an Adam Buchmann pass for the Mustangs’ second forced turnover in as many drives to start their season. Their second opportunity, however, would not get them close to the endzone as quarterback Ryan Adamscheck threw the first of his three interceptions on the first play of the drive.

Unlike the Mustangs, the Eagles would capitalize on the turnover as running back Zach Schultz broke free for 60 yards to put Faith Christian up 6-0. Adamscheck would get the feeling of déjà vu as he threw another interception shortly after, leading to a 20-yard touchdown run by Elijah Durrett.

With a 12-0 lead, the pressure shifted to Manitou’s defense, who had played well with the exception of allowing two long touchdown runs. They were able to limit the Eagles to no further damage in the first half, going into the break still down by 12.

“If either team had been sharper with what they were trying to do, it probably would’ve been a different ball game at that point,” Nance said. “It was a totally new offense for us, a new defense, there were a lot of new guys on the (offensive) line so all of that stuff plays in to where everyone’s just trying to gel together.

Halftime adjustments didn’t show immediate dividends for Manitou as they turned the ball over for the fourth time of the game on their first drive of the half. The defense once again came big, forcing the Eagles to punt after the offense stalled at mid-field.

That’s when the Mustangs found their run game. Paced by Peterson, the Mustangs powered their way down field. They got on the scoreboard with a five-yard touchdown run by Peterson, cutting the deficit to 12-7.

The Eagles answered quickly with a touchdown run by Buchmann, building the Eagles lead back to scores at 18-7. But that would be far from the end for Manitou. The Mustangs continued to focus on the ground game and it paid off as Peterson broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run with six minutes still remaining on the clock.

The Mustangs would add on the two-point, making the score 18-15 and pulling Manitou to within a field goal. But in order to have that opportunity, Manitou had to come up big on the defensive side of the ball.

The Eagles continued to use their ground game to try and advance the ball while running time off the clock. Buchmann had his team at mid-field, facing 4th and 4. Rather than hand the ball over to Manitou, the Eagle went for it with Buchmann throwing the ball down the field where it was caught, but out of bounds.

“It was (a collective) call to go for it,” Buchmann said. “We felt confident in what we had called it just kind of broke down.”

The Mustangs now had possession of the ball with a chance to drive down and tie or win the game. They crossed into Faith Christian territory and found themselves with a 1st and 10 situation at the Eagles’ 45. The running attack is what got Manitou back into the game, but with no timeouts, Gutowski was forced into a passing situation. Four straight incompletions gave the Eagles the ball and their first win of 2014.

“It was execution. We had that many mistakes and we couldn’t execute,” Gutowski said. “I didn’t have our ball club ready to go. Bottom line. We didn’t have a timeout and they were playing outside. That’s my call and no one else’s.”

The Mustangs will hit the road for the first time next Friday as they travel to Woodland Park. The Eagles will play host for the first time Friday when they welcome Florence into town.

The first loss for the Manitou Springs Mustangs couldn’t have come at a worse time last season.

In 2013, the Mustangs ran the table through their regular season schedule and earned the No. 2 seed heading into the 2A playoffs.

They cruised by Jefferson in the first round, then emerged from a tough battle with Kent Denver in the quarterfinals. A week later, it was on their home field that the Mustangs fell for the first time in 2013, losing 13-7 to eventual Class 2A champion Platte Valley.

While the Mustangs have a solid group of returning players in 2014, they’ll enter the season looking nothing like the semifinal team they were last year.

In January, coach Danny Gieck stepped down from the position in order to focus more on his family and overall duties to the district. After an extensive search, the Mustangs — for the first time since the retirement of longtime coach George Rykovich — hired an outsider. Former Palmer Ridge coach Monte Gutowski took the position and looks maintain the level of success the Mustangs found in 2013, but will do so with a different approach.

“I don’t think (anyone else’s expectations) matter, I think that within our team — what our team goals are and us as a coaching staff — are the things that we need to focus on,” Gutowski said. “Everybody external is going to have their own opinion and that’s rightfully theirs but that’s none of my business. I don’t care what their expectations are, I care about what my expectations are for my club.”

New Manitou Springs coach Monte Gutowski. (Courtesy of Larry Ferguson/Pikes Peak Bulletin)
New Manitou Springs coach Monte Gutowski. (Courtesy of Larry Ferguson/Pikes Peak Bulletin)

The most notable difference for Gutowski’s Mustangs from those of the past will be the absence of the single-wing offense. The “wildcat” style offense was first utilized by Rykovich and carried on through the short coaching careers of CHSAA hall of famer Justin Armour and Gieck.

Gutowski is a fan of varying formations and uses a lot of pistol in his offense, which he will bring to Manitou.

“Everybody gets all wigged out with the pistol, but it’s still just a short shotgun,” he said. “We’ll have a power running game with zone read-type concepts and things like that involved.”

The new offensive style won’t be hard for the Mustangs to grasp, Gutowski insists. He was able to work with the team during a summer camp and started to implement the necessary components of the offense, which the team responded well to.

He’ll use the time between the start of official practices and the Mustangs’ first game (Aug. 29 against state runner-up Faith Christian) to fine-tune his offense and hopefully work out any kinks the Mustangs may have. Gutowski remains confident that the Mustangs will have few issues transitioning into a new system, mostly because of the athleticism he has found in his team.

“Skill-wise, a lot of the skill guys that are back have really good overall team speed,” he said. “I think it fits them, being able to do some of the things I’m asking them to do and letting them be the athletes they are not over-coaching them.”

The Mustangs, ranked No. 4 in the preseason, hope to repeat as Tri-Peaks league champions, but face a tough non-league schedule in Faith Christian, Woodland Park, Buena Vista and Eaton. Their first league game will be played on Sept. 26 when they host La Junta.

  • Defending champs rule preseason football rankings

Defending champions head six of football’s seven preseason CHSAANow.com rankings, which were unveiled Monday morning.

The lone exception is Lutheran in Class 3A — which saw both its champion (Coronado) and runner-up (Silver Creek) move up to 4A this cycle.

In fact, that ranking was also the most split of any other, with both Lutheran and preseason No. 2 Delta both getting three first-place votes. Lutheran got the No. 1 nod with 65 total points. Delta had 53 points.

Lutheran was eliminated in the first round of the 3A playoffs last season, while Delta made the semifinals. Lutheran is entering its first season under new coach Blair Hubbard, formerly of Faith Christian.

Valor Christian, a five-time defending champion across three classifications, opens up as No. 1 in Class 5A for the second year in a row. The Eagles topped Fairview to win the 5A title last season.

Cherry Creek, a quarterfinalist a year ago, is No. 2 in 5A. Cherokee Trail is ranked third, Pomona is fourth and Columbine is fifth.

Chatfield begins the season as No. 6, Regis Jesuit is No. 7, Grandview is No. 8, Ralston Valley is No. 9 and Fairview rounds out the preseason poll.

Among those receiving votes in 5A were ThunderRidge, Overland, newcomer Monarch and Legend.

In 4A, Pine Creek begins as the No. 1 team. The Eagles beat Montrose in last year’s title game. Montrose is No. 2 in the ranking.

Other preseason No. 1 teams are Platte Valley (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Stratton/Liberty (6-man).

The rankings are voted upon by coaches and select media members, and are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, rankings will be released each Monday.

  • Rampart tops preseason 5A volleyball ranking

    State volleyball
Lewis-Palmer, the defending 4A volleyball champion, heads the preseason ranking in that class. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Rampart, Lewis-Palmer, Manitou Springs, Resurrection Christian and Fleming are the preseason No. 1 volleyball teams in their respective classifications.

CHSAANow.com’s preseason poll was released on Monday, and three of last year’s champions are atop the rankings. Those are Lewis-Palmer, Resurrection Christian and Fleming.

Rampart, which received eight of the 11 first-place votes, heads the Class 5A poll. The Rams made the state tournament last season, where they went 1-1 in pool play. They return a number of top players from that team.

Cherokee Trail is No. 2 to start the year, and is followed by No. 3 Fossil Ridge, No. 4 Grandview — the defending champion — and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Pine Creek is sixth, Eaglecrest is seventh, Legend is eighth, Arapahoe is ninth and Mountain Vista rounds out the ranking.

Lewis-Palmer heads 4A. Ponderosa is No. 2, and Air Academy, last year’s runner-up, is third.

Manitou Springs is on top of the 3A ranking, just ahead of defending champ Eaton. Manitou was runner-up last season.

Resurrection Christian leads 2A, while Fleming is on top of 1A.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Manitou Springs tabs longtime assistant as baseball coach

    photo 2
    (Dan Mohrmann)

MANITOU SPRINGS – Manitou Springs athletic director John McGee didn’t have to look far to find a new baseball coach to fill the void left by Rob Quarry, who retired at the conclusion of the 2014 season.

Thursday, McGee offered the position to longtime assistant Cory Archuleta, who accepted and will take the reins in 2015.

Archuleta first joined Quarry’s staff in 2006 after spending time as the head coach at Wasson. Prior to that, his coaching experience was primarily at the junior varsity level, mainly with Palmer and Sand Creek.

His vast baseball background dates back to his playing days at Lamar Community College. While there, he played for Brian Hochevar – the father of Kansas City Royals pitcher and Fowler High graduate Luke Hochevar.

“I think (with me in charge) practices will be more efficient and we’ll spend more time on fundamentals,” Archuleta said. “When Rob was here and he and I were here together for those eight or nine years, we had kids who played competitive baseball going up through the ranks. We don’t have that anymore.”

Although he may not have the same number of kids playing on traveling competitive teams, Archuleta has maintained consistency with the baseball program as a whole in his time at Manitou. His kids continue to play together each summer through a summer program that he has set up.

In the past, Archuleta has taken his team on the road to high profile tournaments in Las Vegas, Nev. but this year has opted for a wood-bat tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He hopes that the summer competition combined with the return of the bulk of his starters will give the Mustangs an additional boost for the 2015 season. He expects the overall feel of the team to remain consistent, but cites some differences in how Manitou will approach the game with him in charge.

“I’ll play a lot of small ball and we’ll be a lot more aggressive than we have been,” he said. “We’re going to try and do everything in our power to make kids go up (to bat) with a plan of attack. I’m more of an aggressive guy, so I’m sure I’ll take some heat for being too aggressive at times.”

Archuleta is only the third coach for the program since 2001. Rick Hegg took to the team to a top-eight finish that year and coached for two more seasons before handing the team over to Quarry.
