Wrestler of the year: Andrew Alirez, Greeley Central
The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

LAKEWOOD — It won’t be remembered as the most stylistic victory during the tenure for Evergreen’s first-year boys basketball coach Jeff Dolan, but it will go down as his first win leading the Cougars.
“It was great to get Coach Dolan his first win here at Evergreen,” said Evergreen senior Tyler Green who led the way with a game-high 19 points in a 57-40 victory Thursday night over Adams City. “It was a rough win, but a win is a win and we’ll take it.”
The victory came in the opening round of the Paul Davis Classic hosted by Green Mountain High School. The Cougars won the tournament last year on their run to a 19-6 record. However, Evergreen looks very different from top to bottom this year.

Scott Haebe was the Cougars’ head coach for two and a half decades, but he left the boys basketball coaching job at Evergreen and is now heading up the boys basketball program at Clear Creek High School. Dolan — Conifer High School graduate who spent time as a college assistant coach and high school coach in New Mexico — was named the Haebe’s replacement last spring.
“I always respected Scott (Haebe) he always does a great job. All the kids really know how to play,” Dolan said. “Evergreen is a basketball school so there is definitely pressure. I think I have the pieces and the coaching staff to relieve that pressure.”
Evergreen (1-1 record) got off to a rocky start Thursday, but a 12-0 run over a span of three minutes midway through the first quarter allowed the Cougars to get some distance from the Eagles. Still, Evergreen struggled with its shooting and missed 13 free throws on the night.
“It’s a good thing to get that off my shoulders,” Dolan said his first career coaching victory at Evergreen. “Hopefully it also gets out of the way a slump game too. I haven’t seen our guys play like that all year.”
Sophomores Griffin Lauritano (11 points) and Jackson Mott (10 points) both pitched in double-digit points to help out Green in the scoring department. Green finished making nine straight free throws after missing his first two of the game from the charity stripe.
“It’s going to come with time,” Green said of Evergreen struggling from the field. “We are very inexperienced. I think over time the rest of the team will start hitting more shots. They’ll start falling for us.”

The victory put Evergreen into the semifinals where the Cougars face Greeley West at 6:30 p.m. Friday night back at Green Mountain High School. Greeley West (3-0) defeated Battle Mountain 20 points in the first of four games Thursday at Green Mountain High School.
“It’s a new system too, so we are a little uncomfortable. I think we’ll get it going,” Dolan said. “We better figure it out pretty fast because Greeley West has some pretty good players.”
Adams City (0-5) is on a 17-game losing streak dating back to last season when the Eagles lost their final dozen games to finish with a 4-19 record. Senior Raymond Negrete led the Eagles with 14 points.
“A lot of credit to Adams City,” said Green about Adams City cutting the Cougars’ lead to single-digits in the fourth quarter before Evergreen was able to pullaway. “They really compete.”
Despite graduating its top five leading scorers, including Bridger Tenney and Chase Rogers who were key to Evergreen’s success for the last couple of years, Green believes the Cougars have a shot at the coveted Class 4A Jeffco League title.
“I think it’s up for grabs, but at the same time you can’t overlook anyone,” Green said of the 4A Jeffco League. “We have to improve in order to get the title for us. It is very reachable for us.”

Eaglecrest started its season off with a big win over a top-10 foe, beating Highlands Ranch 49-35 in a Class 5A clash.
The Raptors, who led 28-14 at halftime, opened the third quarter with a 17-play, seven-minute scoring drive. That put them up 35-14.
“We executed really well on that drive,” first-year Eaglecrest coach Dustin Delaney told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “That really just demoralizes people when you do that. That’s the kind of football we want to play.”
Eaglecrest would stretch its lead to 49-21 midway through the fourth quarter before Highlands Ranch scored two late touchdowns to cut it to a 14-point game again.
“We didn’t keep our intensity for the whole time, and kind of let the game get closer than it should’ve been, quite honestly,” Delaney said. “That’s youth. There’s a lot of new starters from the team they had last year, so we’ve got to get them broken in. This was a good game to do it, and get ready for our real tough games down the road.”
Highlands Ranch actually drew first blood with a touchdown early in the first quarter. Eaglecrest responded with a touchdown of its own on the next drive, and then senior Elijah Anderson-Taylor forced a fumble on a sack that set up another touchdown.
The Raptors led the rest of the way.
Eaglecrest never punted, but did turn the ball over six times.
“We’ve got a lot of things to work on, and hopefully we can get them fixed for next week,” Delaney said.
Peetz actually led 28-25 at halftime, but Otis outscored Peetz 27-8 in the third quarter to seize control of the game.
“We pretty much shot ourselves in the foot that whole first half,” Otis coach Paul Griese told the Scoreboard Show. “You know, missed assignments; we’ve got to work on some tackling. But you know what? We were playing the returning state champs, and we were tight. We were extremely tight.”

3A: (3) Pueblo East 47, (6) Roosevelt 8
Pueblo East yet again looks ready to contend for a state championship.
The Eagles rolled through the top-10 matchup, scoring the game’s first 40 points.
Quarterback Luc Andrada was 12-of-14 with 263 yards and five touchdowns passing, and also rushed for a score, according to Jeff Bersch of the Pueblo Chieftain. Pueblo East won three-straight state championships prior to last season.

4A: (6) Fruita Monument 10, (9) Pueblo West 6
In a tight defensive battle, Fruita Monument held Pueblo West off the scoreboard following a touchdown on the Cyclones’ initial drive.
The Wildcats went ahead for good on Jacob Burns’ 1-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes to play in the second quarter, per Anthony Sandstrom of the Pueblo West View.
“Our defense flew around, was really aggressive at them, and kind of cut them off,” first-year Fruita Monument coach Cameron Russ told the Scoreboard Show. “They did the same thing to us, so it turned into a ground game — ground-and-pound.”

3A: Holy Family 19, (4) Pueblo South 7
Holy Family knocked off the defending 4A champions, who have moved down to 3A for this cycle.
Kyle Helbig had two interceptions on defense, including a big one late in the third quarter, according to Jon Yunt of Holy Family. He also had a receiving touchdown.

Wrestler of the year: Andrew Alirez, Greeley Central
DENVER – It was only fitting that during the first state wrestling tournament in nearly three decades that he hasn’t served as a head coach, Tom Deaguero received a huge ovation from a packed house Friday night at Pepsi Center.
The longtime Adams City coach, who handed the program off to nephews Jared and Joey this season, represented the Deaguero family as they received the Family Heritage Award from the Colorado Chapter of the National High School Wrestling Hall of Fame.
“Every year, no matter what kind of team we have … I look forward to this weekend every year, and this made it that much more special,” Tom said. “It was a thrill. It’s like feeling what the kids feel when they make it to the finals and get their hands raised.”
Once the semifinals got underway, Adams City did what it does best – it rocked on the wrestling mat. The Eagles advanced three wrestlers into Saturday’s night championship round, and are currently sitting in fourth place in the Class 5A team standings.
Tom Deaguero. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
The name Deaguero is synonymous with Adams City wrestling. Tom and his nine siblings have been a big part of the Commerce City community for decades, and future generations have added to the legacy.
“They are Adams City wrestling,” said Eagles senior Nicholas Gonzales, who was one of the three individuals to reach the finals. “They have (family) from Tom … all the way down to little 2- and 3-year-olds, and next year they’re going to be wrestling in diapers.”
There hasn’t been really been a period in the last fifty years where a Deaguero wasn’t representing the family at Adams City High School.
“Since 1968, I think there might have been, I would guess no more than two intervals of time of not more than a year where there wasn’t a Deaguero there,” Tom said. “I’ve got a big family, five brothers and four sisters. There’s always been somebody there.”
Wrestling royalty
The Deaguero family has always been well-represented at the state tournament as well. Joey was a three-time state champion and T.J. and Jared won two titles each.
Gavin Deaguero. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
On Saturday, Gavin Deaguero – T.J.’s son – gets his opportunity to add to that legacy. The senior scored a late takedown in the 5A 152-pound semifinals and held on for a 6-4 victory.
He’ll face two-time state champion Josiah Rider of Grand Junction.
“It’s a big deal. It puts some pressure on, but I’m willing to carry it,” Gavin said. “Do my absolute best and put my heart on the line for this match. I want it really bad.
“I’m ready. I want to carry on the legacy of the family.”
Gavin, Gonzales and senior Christian Rowell will each compete Saturday night in the championship finals. Jared said he couldn’t remember the last time that Adams City had three individuals make the finals.
“Honestly, this is one of the best programs we have in the state. Just the culture we have, it’s us,” Gonzales said. “No one knows where Adams City is, no one knows where we’re from, no one knows what we’ve done. Right now, right here is where we rep our city and we show them what’s up.”
A new generation
Tom led the high school program for 26 years before taking an assistant principal position this year. Jared and Joey, who both starred at Adams State – Jared won an NCAA Division II national championship for the Grizzlies – were eager to do their part for the family and the program.
“(Tom) started the youth program back in 1980 with his cousin, Ricky Sanchez. We wouldn’t have anything if it wasn’t for him,” Jared said. “It’s a little bittersweet, but at the same time he knew it was something I’ve been wanting for a long time.
“It’s been a good transition because he’s still in the room, and he’s still helping out.”
The wrestlers have been receptive to the change as well.
“Jared and Joey have always been there, even when my Grandpa was head coach,” Gavin said. “I feel like the reason that my Grandpa decided to hand it down to my uncles is because he saw they were ready.”
Joshua Deaguero. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
The future looks even brighter as the program continues to add depth from its youth program, and more Deagueros are on the way. Sophomore Joshua Deaguero reached the semifinals at 138 pounds, and could be on his way to placing for a second consecutive year. There are also family members currently at the middle-school level who will be at Adams City before too long.
There is a lot of pride in representing the name Deaguero, but it’s more than just a name – it’s about family and community.
“For us it’s all about representing our Grandpa Tony and our Grandma Francis,” Jared said of his grandparents, who raised 10 children. “That’s what it’s all about – respecting them, putting our best foot forward.
“Not only doing it on the mat but doing it off the mat too, representing our name and Adams City and Commerce City – everything, the best we can.”
DENVER — A little bit of wrestling history could be made Saturday night at Pepsi Center.
On a night where Poudre senior Jacob Greenwood makes his bid to become the 21st individual to claim four state championships, he has plenty of company looking to add their names to the record book as well during the state wrestling tournament. Seven wrestlers across Class 5A and 4A will pursue their third state title, joining a bigger — but still exclusive — club.
Three seniors and four juniors get their opportunity Saturday night after the Parade of Champions, which gets going at 6:30 p.m.
“It’s really fun graduating with all these guys,” Lakewood’s Gabe Dinette said of his fellow seniors. “(Josiah) Rider, (Jacob) Greenwood, and (Pomona junior) Theorius (Robison) is going for his third. I grew up with all of them so we’re all good buddies, and it should be fun for all of us to represent our schools and go for that third title.”
Dinette, Grand Junction’s Josiah Rider and Castle View’s Malik Heinselman are appearing in the 5A championship finals for the last time.
Dinette posted a 14-2 major decision at 160 pounds and draws Rocky Mountain’s Josh Betts in the title match.
“I’m feeling good,” Dinette said. “Don’t take anything for granted — always got to get better and keep pushing it, and put on a show (Saturday).”
Heinselman scored a 17-2 technical fall at 120 pounds and will meet Pomona’s Justin Pacheco. Rider’s 11-2 major decision victory at 152 sends him up against Adams City’s Gavin Deaguero.
For the four juniors, there could be even more history to be made. The previous time multiple wrestlers captured a fourth consecutive title was in 2002. There has never been three four-time champions in the same year, let alone four.
Pueblo County’s Brendon Garcia has had a front row seat each of his first two years to watching someone win four in a row. Last year it was his teammate, Hunter Willits, who accomplished the feat.
“I just kind of wanted to be in the same spot,” Garcia said. “Seeing that was pretty cool, how he went for four. I want to be there.”
Garcia defeated Discovery Canyon’s Jett Strickenberger by a 4-1 decision at 106 pounds in a match that he admits wasn’t that great on his part. But it still sends him into Saturday’s title match against Pueblo Central’s Jacob Gonazales.
“Now I’ve just got to make weight (Saturday) morning,” Garcia said. “It’s just a long wait tomorrow until the finals.”
Theorius Robison. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
Robison scored an 18-9 major decision at 132 pounds in 5A and will go up against Poudre’s Job Greenwood for the title. Ponderosa’s Cohlton Schultz has been dominant in his first year at heavyweight, pinning his way into the title match against Poudre’s Weston Mayer.
In 4A, Greeley Central’s Andrew Alirez is also pursuing his third championship. The junior won by a 21-5 technical fall at 145 pounds and matches up with Canon City’s Zac Hanenberg on Saturday night.

The 5A team race is tight:
Grand Junction holds a narrow lead over Pomona as the two teams fight for the 5A team championship.
The Tigers ended Friday with 128.5 points. Pomona, the two-time defending champion, has 125 points. The Panthers lost a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct during the semifinals.
Poudre is currently third with 106.5 points, Adams City (84) is fourth, and Castle View (82.5) is fifth.

Pueblo East on top in 4A:
Pueblo East has a pretty sizable lead for the 4A team title heading into the final day of competition.
The Eagles ended Friday with 150 points. Pueblo County, their rival and two-time defending champions, sit in second with 127. Windsor (118 points) is third.
Mesa Ridge is currently fourth with 62.5 points. Greeley Central (56.5) is fifth.
Windsor freshman Vance VomBaur beat 2016 champ Jace Trujillo of Pueblo East with a 5-4 decision in the 4A 120 semifinals.
Poudre junior Job Greenwood beat 2015 champion Dayton Marvel from Arvada West to move to the final in 5A 132.
Zion Freeman, a junior at Pueblo East, upset top-seeded and returning champion Garrett Niel of Pine Creek in 4A 182 with a 3-2 decision. Niel won the weight class in 2016.
Mesa Ridge senior Michael True gave Silver Creek senior Jacob Williams (40-1) his first loss of the season to reach the final in 4A 285. That final should be a great one, as defending champion Andy Garcia of Pueblo East is on the other side of the mat.
