  • All-state softball teams for the 2018 season

    The 2018 all-state softball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These team were created following a process where the coaches voted upon a list of nominees. Players who were named first-team all-league are eligible for the all-state ballot.

    Coaches also voted specifically for player and coach of the year.

    LAKEWOOD — Kent Denver’s offense looked efficient on Thursday as the Class 2A No. 8 Sun Devils beat Alameda 48-22.

  • Football roundup: Doherty knocks off No. 6 ThunderRidge for first win

    Brian Mosley rushed for three touchdowns to help Doherty football pull off a big upset of previously unbeaten and sixth-ranked ThunderRidge on Friday night.

    “We knew this was going to be a four-quarter fight, and it came down to the last minute of the game,” Doherty coach Jeff Krumlauf told CHSAANow. “ThunderRidge is truly a top-10 program in the state right now. They have some special kids and some great coaches. For us to be down by 14 and sustain a course was huge for us on a high level.”

    The Spartans entered the week winless at 0-4, but had played the second-toughest schedule in the state according to the RPI, with losses to Cherry Creek, Mullen, Pine Creek and Fairview to open the season. All have been ranked in the top-10 at some point this season.

    On Friday, Doherty rallied from down 14 to take a 21-14 lead at halftime, thanks to two scores from Mosley, and a defensive fumble return for a TD.

    In the end, the Spartans were able to hold off a rally from ThunderRidge, which had started the season 4-0.

    1A: (2) Limon 36, (1) Strasburg 6

    Limon led 21-0 early, taking that lead into the break, before Strasburg made it 21-6 after three. But the Badgers only added to the margin in the fourth quarter.

    “I thought our kids were really ready to play; I think they were excited to play,” coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “With our win that we had last week against Meeker, our kids got a little bit of confidence playing against a really good team. And obviously Strasburg is also a great team, and I think they were really looking forward to the challenge.”

    Hauk Hubbard led Limon with 111 yards rushing and two scores, while Celby Hollenbaugh also had a rushing touchdown. Cannan Bennett also threw a touchdown pass for Limon.

    The game was briefly interrupted in the second half when the sprinklers came on.

    “You don’t see it too often,” O’Dwyer said. “I think that was the second time in my career I’ve seen that happen.”

    Limon limited Strasburg to just 15 yards rushing. Strasburg entered the game averaging close to 200 yards per game.

    The Badgers rushed for 291 yards themselves.

    4A/3A: (4A 4) Montrose 21, (3A 2) Palisade 17

    MONTROSE — Fourth-ranked Montrose won 21-17 in front of a full house on Friday night.

    The game went back-and-forth all night. Palisade grabbed a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Montrose cut it to 10-7 on a 85-yard interception return for a touchdown from Cauy Boulder with 23 seconds left in the half.

    Montrose grabbed its first lead when Cole Simmons scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter, but Palisade responded with a rushing score from quarterback Cam Tucker with 8:34 to play.

    The ensuing kickoff went out-of-bounds, giving Montrose the ball at their own 35. They then used a clock-chewing drive to score the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left. Again, it was Simmons who scored, this time on a six-yard rush.

    “We beat a good team,” Montrose coach Brett Mertens said afterward. “Cauy Boulden’s interception was big for us. We had some young kids step in and play the line and they did a great job.”

    “We had some young kids fill in on the line and they open holes for me,” Simmons said.

    The Knighted Eagles flexed their muscles in a matchup of 6-man’s top two teams.

    Stratton/Liberty raced out to a 61-6 lead at halftime.

    Notables:

    • 5A No. 7 Eaglecrest quarterback Dylan James rushed for three touchdowns as his team cruised to a 5-0 start this season with a 50-14 win over No. 8 Arvada West.
    • Pueblo West led 4A No. 9 Pine Creek 9-0 at halftime, but the Eagles scored 21 unanswered points to win 21-9. The turning point was a muffed punt return in the third quarter that set Pine Creek up with a short field, and led to their first touchdown.
    • Alameda defeated Valley 51-43 to end an 18-game losing streak.
    • Fountain-Fort Carson sophomore Alexisius Jones Jr. rushed for 340 yards and four touchdowns in his team’s 58-18 win over Overland.
    • 6-man: In a win over No.4 Flagler/Hi-Plains, freshman Yahir Enriquez rushed for six touchdowns and 292 yards on 22 carries for No. 8 Idalia. He also threw a touchdown pass, and caught another. He had 383 all-purpose yards. “Everything was clicking for us,” Idalia coach Colby Newton told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 2A No. 10 Kent Denver scored a tying touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:42 to play in regulation, then went on to beat Pueblo Centennial in overtime, 34-28.
    • Hinkley football is now 4-0 after a 30-14 win over Sand Creek. Hinkley was 1-19 over the past two seasons, and has won more than three games in a season just once since 2004.
    • Steamboat Springs football cruised to a 40-7 win over Hotchkiss in their first game in their home stadium after it was renovated.
    • 5A No. 5 Grandview had its way with Mullen, beating the Mustangs 56-3.
    • In 1A, No. 6 Centauri beat No. 10 Buena Vista 41-7.
    • In 8-man, No. 6 Holly edged No. 8 Fowler 29-28. “It was crazy,” coach Dayne Eaton told the Scoreboard Show. “I don’t know if I’ve seen a game where the kids were playing that hard against each other.”
    • Fort Collins beat Poudre in overtime, 20-14. The Lambkins had led 14-0 at halftime, and Poudre rallied to tie it and send it to OT.
    • Vista PEAK is now 4-0 in 4A after beating Aurora Central 30-14. This is the best start in the seven-year history of the program.
    • 6-man: Granada and No. 5 Cheyenne Wells traded scores seemingly every other minute in a shootout, one that saw Granada ultimately pull off the upset win 74-64.
    • Emmanual Heurta rushed for three touchdowns to help 1A No. 5 Wray beat Brush 26-7.
    • Noah Roper scored three touchdowns on just seven carries as 3A No. 1 Erie topped Canon City 55-7. He also recovered a fumble.
    • Denver East quarterback Myles Patterson threw for 242 yards and three scores in a 44-6 win over Mountain Range. The Angels are now 4-1 after going 2-8 last season. It’s their best start since they opened 6-1 in 2014.
    • In a matchup of returning champions, 3A No. 6 Palmer Ridge beat Pueblo South 45-14.
    • Joshia Davis, a running back who missed the past three games with injury, made his return for Valor Christian in a 27-0 win over Menlo Atherton (Calif.). He had six carries, and scored a touchdown.

  • Football roundup: Niwot football wins for the first time in two years

    When Niwot football grabbed a 12-7 lead over Fort Lupton at halftime on Friday, it was the first time they’d led in a game since 2016.

    The Cougars weren’t satisfied with that.

    They went on to win 26-13 for the program’s first win since September 2016. The victory snapped a 19-game losing streak.

    Liam Flanagan rushed for three touchdowns and 154 yards on 43 carries for the Cougars. Cory Rathburn led the defense with five tackles.

    Niwot is in its second season under coach Jeremy Lanter.

    4A/3A: (4A 8) Montrose 41, (3A 8) Durango 36

    The two teams traded scores all night, but it was Montrose who got the final points.

    Montrose’s Emmert Kastendieck scored on a four-yard run to give his team the lead for good with 41.2 seconds to play, according to the Durango Herald.

    Chris Eckerman had 220 yards and two touchdowns for Montrose, per the paper.

    The game was delayed in the third quarter due a lightning in the area.

    6-man: (3) Kit Carson 50, (5) Arickaree/Woodlin 8

    Kit Carson controlled the game from start to finish in moving to 2-0 this season.

    “We ran the ball really well,” coach Curt Connelley told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Our special teams really got us on the board quickly.”

    Joe Bryan returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and his brother, Chris Bryan, returned a punt for a score.

    8-man: Fowler 28, (4) Akron 20

    Fowler knocked off the previously-unbeaten Rams with a late score. The Grizzlies recovered a kickoff after a fortunate bounce to set up the touchdown.

    “It was a lot of smashmouth football. Akron had a couple of big plays on us. They did a great job defensively,” coach Mark Van Sickle told the Scoreboard Show. “We were three- to four-yards and a cloud of dust. It was great to get back to what I think Fowler football is.”

    Notables

    • Ponderosa got a huge win by upsetting No. 3 Windsor in 4A, 17-13. Nick Hoff and Ethan Waite each rushed for a touchdown.
    • In 5A, No. 1 Cherry Creek cruised to a 3-0 start with a 35-8 win over No. 10 Mullen. A photo gallery of the game is available here.
    • Hinkley is off to its first 2-0 start since 2014 following a 7-0 win over Gateway. The Thunderbirds have opened the season with consecutive shutouts.
    • Pagosa Springs knocked off 1A No. 3 Centauri 31-12.
    • Smoky Hill is now 3-0 for the first time since 2007. The Buffs beat Northglenn 21-6.
    • Quite the stat line for Bryson Long of No. 6 Peetz in 6-man: He rushed for 270 yards and had five touchdowns in a 67-22 win over No. 9 Fleming.
    • It’s always a big rivalry game, and even though they’re now in different classes, this matchup was no different as 1A No. 1 Strasburg beat 2A No. 8 Bennett 32-8.
    • In a game that featured six lead changes, 4A No. 4 Chatfield held off Brighton 39-30.
    • Heritage held off a late Arapahoe drive to win the Milk Jug.
    • In 8-man, No. 4 Prairie beat No. 10 Briggsdale 56-40. “We had a little bit more offensively efficiency. Our offense clicked a lot more tonight,” coach Justin Kerns told the Scoreboard Show of the difference from his team’s first game to its second. Photos from the game are here.
    • 5A Castle View won a wild back-and-forth game on the final play of the game against Wasatch (Utah), 36-35. The Sabercats are now 2-1 under Todd Casebier in his first year — doubling their win total from last season.
    • Evergreen blocked a last-second field goal to upset Mead.
    • Cheyenne Mountain survived a lady bug infestation to rally and beat Sand Creek 21-20.
    • Denver North QB Erik Flores threw for 370 yards and five touchdowns in his team’s 56-40 win over Englewood. Four of those TDs went to Keon Brickens.
    • In 5A, Highlands Ranch beat Regis Jesuit in overtime, 20-17.
    • Eagle Valley snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 57-12 victory against Alameda.
    • 2A No. 7 Basalt cruised to a 47-6 win over Battle Mountain. “The offensive line really played well tonight,” coach Carl Frerichs told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 8-man No. 1 Sedgwick County has now won 25 games in a row after beating Gilpin County 60-0.
    • In their first game playing under new lights, Byers beat Front Range Christian 72-38 in 8-man.
    • Cotopaxi QB Frank Ogden threw for four TDs in his team’s 48-6 win over La Veta.
    • Donovan Garvin grabbed three receiving scores as Berthoud beat Skyview 45-7.
    • 6-man No. 6 Flagler/Hi-Plains rushed for six touchdowns as a team in a 59-6 win over Edison.
    • Ho-hum, another three rushing scores for Erie star Noah Roper, these coming in a 43-16 win over rival Frederick. He also passed for a touchdown.

  • Galan-Browne hits game-winner in Jeffco girls senior hoops all-star game

    LAKEWOOD — Baylee Galan-Browne won back-to-back Class 4A girls basketball state titles, so celebrating on the court is old hat to the Evergreen senior guard.

    Nine days after celebrating on the court at the Denver Coliseum, Galan-Browne had a similar celebration leap and run toward the bench Monday night at the Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood. The Evergreen senior hit the game-winning shot with 7 seconds left in the inaugural Jeffco High School Senior Basketball Game to give the White squad a 78-75 victory.

    “I was like OK, I’m really good at last-second shots so this one is going to go in,” Galan-Browne said with all smiles after the victory. “It went in and I was like, OK. That’s cool. I like that.”

    The final 30 seconds (see video above) was wild. The Blue team held a 75-73 lead, but a fed by Evergreen senior Kristina Schreiber into the post to Ralston Valley senior Samantha Van Sickle was just what White coach Chris Olson wanted. Van Sickle, who was named the White team MVP with 13 points, made a nice move in the post to tie the game at 75-75 with 27 seconds left.

    “The best thing I did was not say anything and just cheer them on,” Olson said. “I just let them do there thing. Having that many great kids was awesome.”

    Olson, D’Evelyn girls basketball coach, was filling in for Evergreen coach Amy Bahl who had to miss the game due to a medical issue with one of her young daughters.

    Two of Bahl’s former players were key in the game-winning basket. After a miss by Lakewood senior Sassy Coleman, Schreiber grabbed the rebound and fired a pass up court to her former Cougar teammate. Galen-Browne, who will play at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. next school year, pulled up for the 3-pointer that hit nothing but net with 7 seconds to play.

    “We just focused on the little things and pressure on defense,” Galan-Browne said of the White team erasing an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

    Golden senior Abby Garnett, who was named the Blue squad MVP with a game-high 21 points, wasn’t able to get off a shot before the buzzer.

    “It was awesome,” said Garnett of the experience. “I was sitting on the bench and talking with some players that I played with in eighth-grade. Coming back and having that chemistry back right away was so much fun. Win or lose it was so much fun.”

    Garnett is headed to play at Ohio University.

    “It was a great way to end high school for sure,” Garnett said. “It was more fun playing with some Jeffco girls instead of against them.”

    The inaugural Jeffco High School Senior Basketball Games were put on by the Gold Crown Foundation, Jeffco Public Schools and 1stBank.

    Olson had been big on creating a Jeffco all-star game for several years.

    “I’ve been excited for years to put this together,” Olson said. “I’m glad Gold Crown stepped up and Jeffco was with them to get it all together. After this game, girls are going to want to play in it. I want to be apart of it.”

  • Alameda softball helped to redefine small ball this season with its record-setting speed

    Alameda softball and its head coach Tom Dillingham live by a simple philosophy.

    “Speed never takes a day off,” Dillingham, a long time softball coach, said. “That has been a philosophy that has always been near and dear to my heart.”

    Alameda, which finished the 2017 campaign 12-7 and just missed out on the 4A regionals, stole 180 bases this season, breaking the previous record of 179 set by Burlington in 2014 (according to the as-yet unpublished softball record book, which only dates back to 2009).

    “The girls know what I’m going to do,” Dillingham said. “We don’t always steal on the first pitch. We started varying the steal — I look for the count. In particular, if I get a ball in the count, I know I can give up a strike. So, we’ll fake bunt and run, or we’ll bunt and run.”

    Since 2014, the Pirates have been plundering bases at will. In 2014, they stole 136. In 2015, 128. Last season, they stole 163.

    “My deal has been in the last couple of years particularly, our girls don’t hit the long ball,” Dillingham said. “They’re gap hitters or single hitters. Really, when we hit the ball, it’s going to be primarily singles or doubles. I know in my own mind that we have to manufacture runs.

    “It’s a greater chance to score from second than it is from first. It’s a greater chance to score from third than it is from second.”

    So, Dillingham sticks with what works.

    “In looking at softball compared to baseball, the differences between the bases is 60 feet versus 90 feet,” Dillingham said. “To me, it makes sense to utilize that if you have it.”

    Alameda plays small ball. Slap a single somewhere, steal second, steal third and find a way to push the run across. 

    “We use the bunt, the fake bunt and the slap more than anyone,” Dillingham said. “That’s old school softball. A lot of the schools don’t do that anymore because they teach the big hit. You go with what you have.

    “We really bunt well. It’s a lost art. We’ll bunt and run, we’ll slap and run. It’s all small ball stuff. A lot of times, we scored our runs off of bunts.”

    Alameda’s speed is a big part of the reason why the Pirates (12-7) recorded its first winning season in about a decade.

    “You show up and you have 17 girls that come out for the sport, and you go, ‘This is a bat, this is a ball, this is a glove.’ Honest to goodness, that is a true story,” Dillingham said. “Of those 17 girls who showed up, we had five girls who were experienced softball players.”

    Alameda did not have a winning season dating back to at least 2009.

    “If you would have asked me at the beginning of the season, ‘Thomas, would you take a .500 season?’ I’d take it in a second,” Dillingham said. “By having girls who really wanted to work hard, we ended up being 12-7. That is probably the highest Alameda has finished in, I would guess, 12 or maybe 15 years.”

    Dillingham has two speedsters leading the charge in the stolen base effort. Sophomore Chloe Candelaria and junior Sarye Lopez combined for 94 stolen bases this season. 

    “One of the things with Chloe is, she runs track,” Dillingham said. “On the track team, she runs the 100 and the 200. That tells you she is quick. She can flat fly. You take her skill set in regards to experience and knowledge, the fact that she can flat out fly, and you make it work for you.”

    Candelaria is leading the state with 52 stolen bases, while Lopez sits at third with 42. 

    “When they get on base, I don’t even hesitate,” Dillingham said. 

    These girls have base stealing in their DNA. They know where to slide and what type of slide they need in a given situation.

    “Chloe and Sayra slide well,” Dillingham said. “They are two of the few girls that I know in the state that will go in head first. They think these things through. If it’s the shortstop rotating over, they’ll think the shortstop is probably going to the back of the bag, so they slide to the front of the bag.”

    And this is all set up by Alameda’s ability to play small ball, and play it well.

    “We steal third a lot. A team has to honor a bunt if you do it,” Dillingham said. “They have to honor a fake bunt because you’ve already put in place the fact that you can bunt. My philosophy is that, even if they cheat a little bit, we can beat the shortstop to the base.”

    Alameda has formed its identity around its ability to put pressure on the defense with speed on the basepaths. It’s created an attitude that the Pirates are going to swipe the bag no matter what the opposing team does.

    “To be honest with you, I would have thought there would have been some teams that would pitch out against us,” Dillingham said. “Nobody did. Towards the end of the season, teams started throwing the riseball so they could get it up and have the catcher in position to throw. I didn’t care. We were running.”

    This season, what Dillingham is most proud of this season isn’t the stolen bases. It’s not the turnaround year. It’s something far more rewarding.

    “My objective is to give the girls a skill set that will help them in life,” Dillingham said. “It’s much greater than anything we can do we can do with steals, anything we can do with our record. It’s to teach core values that allow kids to get to the other side of the tracks. That is what high school sports is supposed to be about.”

    During the national anthem before their game against Weld Central, Alameda players stood side by side with the Weld Central players on the third base line, arms locked together. When the anthem concluded, the opposing players shook hands with the players on either side of them.

    “That’s the thing that I’m most proud of in regards to our season,” Dillingham said. “That.”
