  • Girls basketball rankings: Ralston Valley jumps up in 5A

    Just like the boys, the top teams in all five CHSAANow.com rankings all held their positions this week.

    ThunderRidge, Sand Creek, Manitou Springs, Yuma and Idalia all enter the second the week of the season as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes. But with competition starting off fast and furious in Week 1, it was inevitable that some changes would indeed occur.

    In Class 5A, ThunderRidge looked like a top team as they jumped out to a 3-0 start, but it was Ralston Valley that started especially hot, going 3-0 last week and capping the run with a 55-29 win over Cherry Creek, who comes in at No. 7 this week. The Mustangs jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 this week.

    Dakota Ridge is the lone newcomer to the rankings on the strength of wins against Rampart and Loveland. The Eagles land at No. 9.

    Despite dropping their home opener to Poudre, Sand Creek remains the No. 1 team in 4A. They rebounded nicely with a win over Sierra.

    Mesa Ridge looks like they could be returning to their state championship form of 2014 as they jumped from No. 8 to No. 3 and even snagged a first place vote in the process.

    Two new teams jumped in the 4A poll this week with Berthoud (No. 9) and Golden (No. 10) all join the party.

    Manitou Springs sure played like 3A’s  No. 1 team during their 74-34 win over Bishop Machebeuf. They followed that up with a win over Colorado Academy, jumping out to a quick 2-0 start.

    The top eight teams in the 3A rankings went for a combined 13-0 last week, easily the best showing for any class.

    A couple of 3-0 starts from Lamar and Trinidad helped both teams join the rankings this week, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

    Like Sand Creek, Yuma held on to their spot in the 2A rankings, despite an early loss. They still garnered nine first place votes this week.

    The top six spots from the preseason rankings went unchanged this week. Although there was some shifting in the bottom three spots, Wray was the only new team to the poll as they jumped in at No. 9.

    Prairie and Antonio join this week’s 1A poll at No. 6 and No. 10. Idalia held on to the top spot, though not unanimously as Kit Carson took one first place vote.

    Flagler made the biggest jump in 1A this week, going from No. 8 to No. 4.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Rock Canyon leads host of new teams in baseball rankings

    Three teams joined the Class 5A baseball rankings this week, and no rise was greater than that of Rock Canyon, which now finds itself in the No. 5 spot.

    The Jaguars (11-1) went 3-0 last week, and led a host of new teams to CHSAANow.com baseball polls. Also joining in 5A were No. 9 Mullen (7-3) and No. 10 Denver East (11-1).

    Rock Canyon beat then-No. 8 ThunderRidge and then-No. 9 Heritage last week. The Jaguars are off to their best start since opening 8-0 in 2009-10.

    Mullen, meanwhile, is unbeaten against in-state teams at 7-0. And Denver East’s lone loss came to Rock Canyon in its opener, 9-7, on March 12.

    Rocky Mountain remained atop the 5A poll, and Mountain Vista stayed in No. 2. Fairview bumped up to No. 3, jumping just ahead of Cherry Creek, which is now No. 4.

    Fruita Monument is up one spot to No. 7 and Grandview is No. 8.

    The other No. 1 teams in each classification also remained the same. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Eads (1A).

    The 4A poll added No. 7 Ponderosa, and 3A has two newcomers — Valley (No. 9) and St. Mary’s (No. 10).

    The 2A ranking added No. 8 McClave/Wiley, as well as No. 10 Yuma.

    There are four new teams in this week’s 1A poll: No. 5 Primero, No. 6 Fleming, No. 7 Springfield and No. 10 Antonito.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Preseason baseball rankings released in all classes

    Defending champions and teams that lost in last season’s title games make up the preseason No. 1 teams in baseball this season.

    Heading their respective classifications in the CHSAANow.com polls are Regis Jesuit (5A), Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Dove Creek (1A).

    Green Mountan and Resurrection Christian are defending champions, while Regis, Eaton and Dove Creek were all runners-up last season.

    The 5A poll was the most split, with six different teams getting first-place votes.

    Regis led the way with five first-place votes and 126 total points. Rocky Mountain, the defending champion, also got five first-place votes, but totalled 114 points.

    Cherry Creek, another team to get a first-place vote, opens the year at No. 3. Legend (No. 4), Fairview (No. 5) and Chatfield (No. 9) also received at least one first-place vote.

    ThunderRidge is sixth in 5A’s preseason poll, and is followed by No. 7 Dakota Ridge and No. 8 Grandview. Mountan Vista rounds out the poll at No. 10.

    In 4A, Green Mountain was a unanimous selection with all 10 first-place votes. Montrose is No. 2, followed by Valor Christian, Palmer Ridge and Lewis-Palmer. Holy Family, last season’s 3A champion which has moved up to 4A, begins at No. 10.

    Eaton heads 3A’s poll, and is also a unanimous pick with all 10 first-place votes.

    Resurrection Christian received eight of the nine first-place votes to lead 2A. Caliche, last year’s 1A champ, is now in 2A but is unranked to begin the year.

    Dove Creek received seven of the eight first-place votes to top 1A’s preseason ranking.

  • Cotopaxi’s Burger scored 10 touchdowns last Friday

    Yet another football game has turned out eye-popping numbers. This time, Cotopaxi sophomore Alex Burger accounted for ten total touchdowns in his team’s win over Antonito last Friday.

    Burger had eight rushing scores (and 267 yards), while also throwing for two touchdowns (and 147 more yards) in the 6-man game. He also led his team with 12 tackles on defense, and intercepted a pass.

    The ten touchdowns are tied for the third-most in state history, three short of the record set by Woodlin’s Harold Klausner in 2005. The eight rushing touchdowns are the fourth-most in state history. Hugo’s Ken Pearson rushed for 12 in 1930.

    In a nod to the absurd offensive performances we’ve seen this season, Burger’s eight rushing touchdowns aren’t even the most in 2014. Sand Creek’s Daniel Quin rushed for nine on Sept. 19.

    Cotopaxi beat Antonito 83-56. The combined 139 points are the ninth-highest output in state history.

    Burger has 25 total touchdowns this season: 13 rushing, seven receiving and five passing. As a linebacker, he also has a team-high 86 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal.

    Burger’s 127 total points are second in the state this season, regardless of classification.

  • Football roundup: No. 1 Valor Christian escapes Eaglecrest’s upset bid

    Eaglecrest nearly pulled off the upset of the season at top-ranked Valor Christian on Friday night.

    Nearly.

    Valor escaped with a 23-21 win thanks to a game-sealing interception from Brian Dawkins Jr. in the final minute.

    It was the second-straight league game in which Valor (5-1) got all it could handle. Last week, Centennial foe Overland hung until midway through the fourth quarter before the Eagles’ ran off 21-unanswered points to win 35-10.

    This week, Eaglecrest led 14-7 after the first quarter as Elijah Ross found Peter Anderson twice on long touchdown passes. Valor then scored 16 straight points to take a 23-14 halftime lead.

    But Eaglecrest (3-3) wouldn’t go away. The Raptors’ Glenn Washington scored on a 25-yard run with 7:52 to play in the third quarter to make it 23-21.

    After that, each team’s offense stalled as turnovers and penalties ruled the night.

    Eaglecrest did get the ball back with just over two minutes to play in the game, but was backed up as Valor downed a punt at the 4-yard-line.

    The Raptors weren’t able to move the ball, but the Eagles were flagged for roughing the passer on fourth down, giving Eaglecrest a first down at their own 16. Two plays later, Dawkins picked off the pass to seal the win.

    Dylan McCaffrey finished with 184 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and Eric Lee Jr. had 106 yards rushing — including an 84-yard score. Jarred Kendziorski made a 28-yard field goal which proved to be the difference.

    Valor Christian’s in-state winning streak now stands at 27 games. The Eagles play Cherokee Trail next week.

    1A: (1) Paonia 22, (3) Meeker 16

    Paonia trailed 16-14 with less than two minutes to play, but was able to drive down and get what was ultimately the winning score when Taylor Walters found tight end Joel Simianer for a 4-yard touchdown with 34 seconds to play.

    “It was just kids making plays, and we were fortunate enough to come out on top,” Paonia coach Brent McCrae told ColoradoPreps.com’s Scoreboard Show. “We actually had a big fourth-down conversion (on the final drive), where we just trusted our O-line; they pushed the pile. And then we had a pretty big pass play … on a third-down and long. Two biggies there.”

    Meeker did drive down and had the ball in the red zone, but Paonia held on for the win.

    “We were fortunate enough to have a linebacker to make the tackle just as time expired,” McCrae said. “I think they were on the (5-yard-line) at that point.”

    2A: (1) Brush 32, (4) Platte Valley 28

    Brush got its first real big test of the year, and passed.

    “It was a heck of a battle,” Brush coach Randy Dreitz told the Scoreboard Show. “They’re a very good football team.”

    The Beetdiggers had a great third quarter, where they expanded a 13-7 halftime lead to 28-14, and then Michael Gutierrez’s 20-yard rushing score with eight minutes to play made it 34-21.

    Platte Valley did cut things to a six-point game with two minutes remaining, but Brush held on and defended its No. 1-ranking.

    “The difference was that we held them more than they held us. If you get one play here or there where you can hold them and take it down and score, I think that was the key,” Dreitz said. “Our kids played really well tonight, but their kids played hard. It was a definite battle.”

    1A: Wray 14, (5) Burlington 12

    The Eagles pulled off the upset.

    “We’ve play each other so many times over the years. We know what we’re doing against each other,” Wray coach Levi Kramer told the Scoreboard Show. “It really comes down to who’s going to make the plays at the end of the games, and turnovers. We had one tonight, and they had a couple. It comes down to that.”

    Wray started 1-3 but is now 3-3 after two straight wins.

    “(The kids) could have very easily just said, ‘This is the year we’re going to be down,’ or whatever, but they refused to do that,” Kramer said.

    2A: (9) Gunnison 39, (10) Bayfield 14

    The Cowboys led 24-0 at halftime, and 31-6 midway through the fourth quarter. They cruised from there.

    8-man: (1) Dayspring Christian 32, (2) Akron 20

    For the second week in a row, Dayspring came out on top of a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup.

    The Eagles were up 20-6 at halftime, but Akron battled back to tie the game at 20 after three quarters. Dayspring then rattled off the game’s final 12 points to stay unbeaten.

    The Spartans are now 6-0, and have a feather in their cap after this win. They led 14-0 early in the second, and the score held up.

    Running back Alex DeLaCroix had both of Greeley West’s touchdowns, the first on a 14-yard run, the second on a 7-yard catch.

    Notables

    • D’Evelyn quarterback Owen Burke had another record performance on Friday night. He threw for 530 yards and four touchdowns as D’Evelyn lost to No. 10 Conifer, 38-35, in 3A. Burke threw for 535 last week. The 535 yards were No. 5 all time last week, while the 530 are No. 6 this week. In his last two games, Baker has thrown for 1,065 yards and nine touchdowns. He has 1,762 yards this season.
    • Antonito beat Cotopaxi 83-56. The 139 combined points are now the ninth-most in state history.
    • Luke Nethercot threw for six touchdowns in Canon City’s 45-27 win over Lewis-Palmer on Friday. Technically, that’s tied for eighth-best all-time, though 28 others have done it, as well. He’s a sophomore.
    • TeQuan Baker rushed for 344 yards and three touchdowns in 5A No. 10 Doherty’s 34-14 win over Legend. He now has 1,328 yards this season, which is second in the state. Baker’s gone over 100 yards in all six games, and over 200 yards in five of six. His 18 touchdowns lead the state.
    • No. 4 Holy Family handled No. 8 Berthoud 43-7 in a battle of ranked 3A teams. Holy Family actually trailed 7-6 after the first quarter. “I think the hype of the game got to our kids a little bit,” coach Mike Gabriel told the Scoreboard Show. “But then we kind of settled in and pulled away.” Ultimately, the Tigers scored the game’s final 43 points.
    • Is this the biggest turnaround in 2014? Mountain Valley is now 6-0 in 6-man football. The Indians were 1-7 last year, and didn’t field a team in 2012 because of low numbers. Wow.
    • Mountain Vista is 6-0 in 5A following a 34-7 win over Rock Canyon on Friday night. The Golden Eagles — who had a pink-out on Friday — should be sniffing the top-10 come Monday.
    • Northglenn captured the I-25 Bowl with a 41-21 win over Northglenn.
    • Discovery Canyon, newly anointed No. 1 in 3A, beat Mitchell 56-21.
    • In 8-man, No. 4 Merino beat No. 8 Sedgwick County 30-22.
    • 6-man’s No. 2 Eads handled No. 5 Walsh 59-18.

  • Valor Christian placed in Jeffco League at CLOC meeting

    AURORA — Valor Christian’s athletic programs will reside in the Jefferson County League for the 2014-16 cycle.

    The school, which is independent of a league during the current two-year cycle, had requested to join the Centennial League. And though the Centennial previously denied Valor’s request through a vote at a league meeting, there was still a chance that move would be approved at Tuesday’s Classification and League Organizing Committee (CLOC) meeting.

    However, at the meeting, CLOC voted to not approve Valor’s move to the Centennial. Instead, through a 6-4 vote, it placed the Eagles in the Class 5A Jeffco League. Valor previously played in the 4A Jeffco from 2010-12. Their teams will continue to compete at the 4A level.

    “That’s our job: to put them in a league. They had to be in a league,” CLOC chair Tom Arensdorf said after the meeting. “Every member has the right to be in a league after they’ve done their probationary period. They were not placed in a league two years ago … because basically their membership was in jeopardy. We felt it was best at that time not to put them in a league. No one wanted them, but the reasons for not wanting them were based on past issues that were pretty valid.

    “In this past two-year cycle, Valor has done a lot of things to correct those issues. And they deserve to be placed in a league. That’s this committee’s job, to get them in a league.”

    So Valor, finally, has a league for all of it’s sports — excepting football, which is still awaiting a conference. (That alignment will be finalized later in November.)

    But that doesn’t mean it was easy.

    Valor athletic director Rod Sherman spoke briefly at the meeting about the reasons his school sought to join the Centennial. He also said, in part, “We believe now is the time for Valor’s transition from an independent status to being a full-time member of a league. It would be an honor for us to be a member of the Centennial League; there’s much we can learn. We believe we have respected the process of being placed and we humbly request placement in the Centennial League.”

    A long discussion ensued, with Centennial and Jeffco reps also speaking, and emphasizing Valor Christian’s private status. Then, CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico spoke up.

    “We’ve had a public-private school discussion going on for over two years now,” Angelico said. “I’m afraid I’m to blame for that because I wanted that to be an open and above-board discussion, rather than all the back-biting that was going on behind the scenes. If I would have known that it would have turned into this bickering that will never end, I think I would have stopped it … and not allowed it to start. There’s no end to this.

    “A couple of points I need to make: There is no written or unwritten policy of any sort regarding public and private schools and league placement,” Angelico continued. “Secondly, in the last 24 months, I would say to you, that since that discussion started, it’s not the private schools I’m worried about. … The private school people have heard loudly your message of discontent. Their response has been one of that I can’t complain about. Whatever it takes to be above-board and avoid issues, they’re doing. That applies to Valor doubly. They’ve hired a consultant, they’ve done everything I’ve asked. To the point that last night, in our discussions, we talked about, ‘Well Valor had four ADs show up at the (All-School) Summit.’ I said, ‘Yeah, they did. I told them to, and they did what they were told.’

    “I think we have our priorities goofed up and have kind of started turning around what we’re supposed to be about,” he added. “This isn’t a public/private school issue. I hear loudly that it’s an issue about unfair advantage or differences in schools. … Frankly, I would just like to get this conversation back to what it’s about: somebody needs a home. The fact that they’re a public or private school is not the reason you place them in a conference. Nor has it ever been. Let’s talk about what’s the best fit.

    “The association has certainly survived with several public and private schools together in the same league. I just want to center this. This becomes a ‘Who can win the argument?’ not, ‘What’s the best thing?’ And I think we need to go back to what are we supposed to be doing here. The committee is charged with placing a school, and they will place a school, and they’ll have to do it to somebody’s chagrin.”

    Shortly after, the committee broke into a private session, and then for lunch. When they came back, the vote on Valor request to join the Centennial League was quickly called. Three CLOC members abstained, three voted in favor of the request, and seven against.

    Moments later, committee member Rich Wildenhaus from Erie proposed moving Valor to the 5A Jeffco League. There was no discussion from the audience, and the vote ended with six agreeing with the move, four against it and three abstaining. The entire process was swift.

    “Honestly, that surprised me,” Arensdorf said afterward. “Over the last two days, we probably discussed this issue as a committee for three-and-a-half hours — because whatever decision was made by the committee was going to be unpopular with some schools and cause some angst within leagues. There is no perfect fit.

    “We went through a process that, if the first request did not pass, we — as a committee, it’s our responsibility to come up with something before the end of the day. And different committee members had different proposals,” he continued. “I was surprised that we finished that quickly. And I was surprised there was no feedback from the floor when that proposal was made by Richie Wildenhaus. I didn’t know what to expect at that point, because, as a committee, no one felt comfortable with any solution. There were no solutions that were going to make everybody happy.

    “But, in the end, it is what it is, and all these people are professionals and they’ll deal with what they have to deal with and hopefully make the best situation for all the kids that participate in those programs.”

    Valor Christian did approach Jeffco about joining the league prior to the CLOC meeting. Jeffco has 5A and 4A leagues.

    “Right now, the CLOC committee voted for them to be in 5A Jeffco. I think that discussion still needs to happen,” Jim Thyfault, Jefferson County’s district athletic director, and a member of CLOC, said after the meeting. “Since we do have a 4A option, I think that needs to be discussed.

    “I respect Rod Sherman and the people at Valor, I really do. They were in our league before. And, you know what? We’ll all be very professional about it, and I’m sure they will be, too.”

    CLOC’s actions on Tuesday still need to be confirmed by the Legislative Council in January.

    More league changes

    Earlier, Burlington’s request to join the Lower Platte League was denied. That league had previously voted 9-0 against allowing Burlington admittance. CLOC voted 11-2 against overruling that vote. So Burlington will stay in the Union Pacific League.

    New members

    Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy’s request for membership was denied. The school has a unique schedule to allow its students to train on the mountain during the week — training from 8 a.m. to noon, and then attending classes from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Tuesday through Friday during the winter.

    However, after a lengthy discussion, the committee said they were uneasy going down the road of adding a sports academy as a member.

    “It seems so fundamentally different than what our membership is now,” said committee member Mark Kanagy, Windsor’s athletic director.

    The committee did approve membership for Caprock Charter Academy in Grand Junction, as well as Denver School of Science & Technology – Green Valley Ranch, and Venture Preparatory School in Denver.
