  • Jeffco sports teams supporting Adapted Athletic events

    LAKEWOOD — It’s not very often you see a Columbine football player getting a hug from a Chatfield student on the gridiron.

    However, that was the case last week when Columbine and Arvada football players volunteered as coaches and referees for the Jeffco Public Schools’ Adapted Athletics Flag Football Day on Oct. 18 at Trailblazer Stadium.

    It was the second year Columbine football coach Andy Lowry, who has coached the Rebels to five state titles, had players help run the event.

    “It was great,” Lowry said of the Rebels’ first experience last year volunteering at the Adapted Athletic Flag Football Day. “It was one of the better things we’ve done with our kids over the years. It will be nice to make this an annual deal for our kids.”

    Columbine players acted as offensive and defensive coordinators, along with referees on all five fields at Trailblazer Stadium. Arvada players ran the games played inside Creighton Middle School for non-ambulatory students.

    “We want to help give these kids joy and have fun,” Columbine junior Jacob Gimbel said. “We get to have fun on the football field ourselves and we want to be able to give them that feeling too.”

    Flag Football Day has quickly turned into one of the more popular Adapted Athletic events. A total of 19 high and middle schools with 25 teams participated in this year’s event.

    “It’s such a great day. Bryan (Wickoren) does a tremendous job with all these activities and sports,” Lowry said. “I give so much credit to him for his heart to take on giving these opportunities for kids.”

    Bryan Wickoren, Adapted Athletic Coordinator, was just named the Society of Health and Physical Educators’ Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Wickoren said there is benefit from both sides when higher-end athletes comes out to work with student-athletes of higher needs.

    “It’s the tipping point when you have schools who want to step up and volunteer,” said Wickoren, who have had several Jeffco sports teams step up to help run the monthly events. “That’s cool when you get to that point where schools hear about what is going on and they want their athletes to be apart of this.”

    By the smiles on the faces of coaches, referees and players the success last week at Trailblazer Stadium were on all sides.

    “They are just like us,” Columbine starting quarterback Logan DeArment said. “They are having fun. We are having fun. It’s a great day.”

  • Winners crowned at Jeffco Marching Band Invitational

    LAKEWOOD — It was nearly five hours of non-stop music Sept. 19 at Jeffco Stadium.

    Fifteen high school bands from across Jeffco took part in the annual Jeffco Marching Band Invitational. Lakewood (5A), Bear Creek (4A), Conifer (3A) and D’Evelyn (2A) took first in their respective classifications.

    Pomona High School will host its annual Pomona Band Festival, one of the largest band competitions in the state, on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

  • Arvada West cross country sweeps team titles at Wildcat Invite

    ARVADA — Arvada West’s boys and girls cross country teams successfully protected its home turf Friday, Sept. 15.

    A-West swept the team titles at the 9th annual Wildcat Invite. A-West hosts the 22-team meet at Stenger Soccer Complex, less than 2 miles away from Arvada West High School.

    In the boys varsity race, Eaglecrest senior Mason Brown won the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 20 seconds. Jefferson Academy senior Ryan Lehmuth (16:27) took second and A-West senior Colin Berndt (16:30) placed third.

    “Obviously not winning it is always going to be upsetting, but it was good and fun for sure,” Berndt said. “I like this run.”

    Junior Drew Craig (6th), along with seniors Andres Perez (13th) and Jacob Valdez (23rd) and junior Nicholas Oliveira (38th) also broke into the top-40 to lead A-West to the team title over Overland. Standley Lake placed third and Ralston Valley took fourth.

    “We could have distanced ourselves a little more,” Berndt said of A-West winning the team title. “None of us really felt that good this week. I’ve been motivating everyone that we’ve got to pull it together next week.”

    Next week is the Dave Sanders Invite on Friday, Sept. 22, held at Clement Park, the same site of the Jeffco League Championships next month. Most of the top Class 5A Jeffco teams will be there to give a preview of what the league championships could look like Oct. 12.

    A-West boys are attempting to win a fourth straight 5A Jeffco team title this season.

    On the girls side, A-West senior Claire Pauley placed second with a time of 18:57 at the Wildcat Invite. Legacy sophomore Brynn Siles dominated the race winning by almost a full 50 seconds.

    “I’m pretty happy,” Pauley said of the race. “Place-wise was definitely good. Time-wise could have been better.”

    Seniors Katie Doucette (5th), Amber Valdez (6th), Civianna Gallegos (15th) and junior Maya Fairchild (32nd) gave the Wildcats a comfortable victory over Legacy (2nd), D’Evelyn (3rd), Denver East (4th) and Green Mountain (5th).

    Pauley said she is excited for the Sanders Meet this coming week.

    “With most of us being seniors we’ve built up our confidence,” Pauley said. “I think we have a pretty good realistic idea on what is going to happen.”

  • Football roundup: Discovery Canyon edges Pueblo East in OT

    Cory Gurnett hit the game-winning extra point in overtime to give Discovery Canyon football a key top-10 win over Pueblo East on Thursday.

    The Thunder, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, beat No. 10 Pueblo East 35-34.

    The senior’s kick came following a 9-yard run for junior quarterback Zachary Anderson. Pueblo East also called a timeout in an attempt to ice Gurnett, but it didn’t faze him.

    “I had confidence our kicker was going to make that,” Anderson told the Pueblo Chieftain after the game.

    Anderson had two rushing touchdowns and 73 yards on Thursday night.

    Pueblo East had opened the overtime period with a touchdown of its own, but missed the extra point wide left.

    Caleb Grotelueschen also had a big game for the Thunder with a rushing touchdown and a 90-yard kickoff return for a score. Marshall Pike added a rushing score.

    Pueblo East quarterback Luc Andrada had four passing touchdowns and also a rushing touchdown, according to the Chieftain.

    • Orlando Westbrook accounted for three total touchdowns in Harrison’s 26-23 win over Evergreen. Aumiere Shedrick also had 222 total yards and two touchdowns.
    • Doherty lit up the scoreboard and the stat sheet in a 63-12 win over Palmer. Quarterback Logan Siffert threw three touchdowns, and Julian Cooks rushed for three scores. Gage Vanaman rushed for 149 yards and a score on just seven carries.
    • Five different players had rushing touchdowns as Standley Lake beat Liberty 42-35. Ty Webber rushed for 135 yards, and Alex France accounted for 132.
    • Fort Collins is now 2-1 after beating Greeley West 40-35.
    • Prospect Ridge picked up its first win of the season in beating Arvada 34-0.
    • Pueblo County beat Falcon 17-16 to pick up its first win this year.

  • Football roundup: Greeley West knocks off 3A No. 1 Longmont; game called early due to nearby gas leak

    Greeley West football beat Longmont to move to 2-0 on Thursday night, taking down Class 3A’s top-ranked Trojans.

    The game had a weird ending: It was called with 2:39 remaining after the stadium had to be evacuated, according to the Greeley Tribune, because of a gas leak near the stadium.

    Afterward, Greeley West posted on its Facebook page that “small leak” had been capped.

    “The site is now secure and safe, according to fire authorities,” the school posted. “Sorry for the inconvenience and interruption to tonight’s Greeley West game. The emergency response was quick and safety was secured.”

    This marked the first time since 2009 that Greeley West, which plays in 4A, had beat Longmont. The two teams play annually, and Longmont had won seven-straight games between the two teams.

    Longmont actually led 14-0 in the first quarter before Greeley West rallied to tie the game at halftime.

    The Trojans again took the lead at 20-14 in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored the game’s final 20 points.

    Greeley West’s Derek West had two rushing touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a score, according to the Greeley Tribune.

    The Spartans are now 2-0, while Longmont fell to 1-1.

    3A/4A: Palisade 28, Montrose 27

    The Bulldogs scored 22 second-half points to rally from a 27-6 halftime hole and beat Montrose.

    Montrose, which plays in 4A, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, but Palisade adjusted after the break. The rally started late in the third, with a rushing touchdown with 4 minutes to play in the frame.

    The Bulldogs, a 3A program, got another rushing score early in the fourth, then took the lead three minutes later on yet another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

    3A: (4) Silver Creek 45, Mountain View 33

    Silver Creek exploded for 22 second-quarter points en route to the 45-33 win over Mountain View.

    Andreik Knechtel and TJ Blazon each accounted for two touchdowns for the Raptors, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Brandon Harper added a 98-yard kickoff return for a score.

    • David O’Connell threw for 196 yards and four touchdowns as Golden beat Littleton 49-0. Colin Mulligan caught two of those touchdown passes.
    • Ho-hum, yet another high-scoring affair: Skyline beat Coronado 70-50. Jeremy Hollingsworth and Moses Rivera each had four touchdowns for Skyline, according to GazettePreps.com.
    • There were five shutouts on Thursday. Aside from Golden over Littleton, Thomas Jefferson beat Pueblo Central 68-0, Cherokee Trail beat Denver East 33-0, Horizon topped Overland 40-0, and Denver North beat Arvada 40-0.

    DENVER — Ralston Valley’s Jordan Remley won the Jeffco League girls golf tournament at Fox Hollow on Monday.

    Remley shot 1-over. Teammate Sydney Eye was second (+7), while Arvada West’s Miranda Schiffbauer (+8) finished third.

    Ralston Valley also finished first as a team, shooting a combined +44. Arvada West (+68) placed second, and Evergreen (+86) was third. Golden (+88) and Columbine (+121) rounded out the top five.
