  • All-state girls basketball teams for the 2019-20 season

    The 2019-20 all-state girls basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of coaches.

    A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

  • 3A wrestling: Eaton and Valley share team title in rare tie

    DENVER — Eaton and Valley earned a share of the team title at the Class 3A state wrestling championships — the first tie in state wrestling since 1992.

    For two straight years, Eaton had “runner-up” labeled on it’s wrestling program. This year, they took one step further to the elusive team title.

    “The monkey is not completely off our back yet,” Eaton coach Tony Mustari said. “We still have some work to do in the offseason to get better and fully take that team title home.”

    Eaton’s Tanner True had one last chance to break the tie and vault his team into first place alone with his 285-pound division bout — and Valley could only watch.

    “We wrestled our hearts out in every match we had,” Valley coach Ruben Lucero said. “If it was meant to be, it was meant to be.”

    University’s Emanuel Munoz-Alcala held on for the 3-2 decision over True, resulting in the two-way tie between Eaton and Valley.

    “We told him, ‘Worst case scenario, we have a split team title,’” Mustari said. “‘Go out and let it go. Wrestle like you do every day in practice.’ He wrestled from whistle to whistle and was always looking to score points — and that’s all we can ask.”

    Jefferson placed third, while two-time defending champ Alamosa finished fifth.

    Eaton’s Ryan Dirksen kept his team in front of the team race with a last-second pin of Jefferson’s Zander Condit.

    “We had no idea we would be that far,” Dirksen said after his match. “Knowing that now, it’s amazing I could do that for my team.”

    Down to his last second and trailing 9-4, Dirksen had to go to work. He escaped a hold, then flipped Condit on his back for a pin as time expired. The judges gathered together and awarded Dirksen the win.

    “I was just looking for a pin,” Dirksen said. “I was thinking, ‘Please, I know I pinned him.’ Once you get out there it kind of all goes blurry, and if you have the right mindset, it’s only you, the refs, and the mat.”

    With the pin, Dirksen put the Reds in first place for the time being. 

    “These guys responded to the call tremendously this weekend,” Mustari said. “They come back and keep fighting, getting better every single time they step on the mat, and that’s all we can ask of them.”

    Trailing in the team standings after Dirksen’s pin, Valley’s Jaziah Whaley held his team’s title hopes in his hands ahead of his bout.

    “Going into that match, my coaches came and told me a major decision gets us the lead,” Whaley said. “That was the goal. Go out there and get the major.”

    Whaley completed his undefeated campaign and individual 160-pound title defense with a major decision vs. Tanner Baumgartner (Weld Central).

    “It’s unreal,” Whaley said. “The goal coming into high school was four [titles]. Settle for the next best thing: two.”

    However, Whaley’s flurry of points in the third period meant much more than an individual title. His major decision resulted in a temporary tie at the top of the team standings with Eaton.

    And, after the last match of the night, that tie at the top became permanent.

    106-pound division

    Roberto Estrada (Weld Central) won by decision, 3-0, over Matthew Medina (Eagle Valley) to complete his undefeated season with a state title in the 106-pound division.

    “I wrote down a goal at the beginning of the year,” Estrada said. “State champ with a perfect season, and I did it tonight. Special night.”

    113-pound division

    Jefferson’s Angelo Lozado wrapped up a 6-1 decision against Alamosa’s Davion Chavez to give life to the Saints’ run at the 3A team title. This was Lozado’s second individual title.

    120-pound division

    Isaiah Gamez (La Junta) was looking for a third individual title, but Brady Hankin (Woodland Park) held off Gamez for an 11-6 decision. Hankin won the 106-pound title in 2019. 

    126-pound division

    Jacob Duran (Fort Lupton) edged Johnny Masopust (Florence) in a 4-3 decision for his second individual title. 

    132-pound division

    Zane Rankin (Lamar) repeated as the 132-pound champion after a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Zach Marrero (Strasburg).

    138-pound division

    Isaiah Rios (Valley) defended his 138-pound title vs. Lucas Comroe (Eagle Valley). Rios’ second individual title came off a clean 10-1 major decision.

    152-pound division

    Cameron Lucero (Pagosa Springs) put a stop to any chance Jefferson had at the team title. Lucero won a 2-0 decision vs. Nick Gallegos (Jefferson) for his second individual title.

    170-pound division

    Mac Copeland (Bennett) pinned Cole Gray (Woodland Park) at the 4:40 mark.

    182-pound division

    Cody DuBois (Bennett) joined Copeland, his teammate, as an individual champion. DuBois’ major decision vs. Brian Paxton (Fort Morgan) solidified him as the 182-pound champion. 

    195-pound division

    Nick Wellen (Brush) won by decision, 5-2, over Jeremiah Garcia (Platte Valley).

    220-pound division

    John Foutz (Bayfield) topped Cody Ponce (Eagle Valley) by decision, 4-1.

    The 2019 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

    AURORA — The semifinals are set for the 2019 state softball tournaments after two rounds were played on Friday.

    All games will be played at Aurora Sports Park.

    Strasburg softball

    In first round games:

    • No. 1 University 12, No. 16 Lamar 2. Kyra McFarland and Tayler Frank hit home runs for the Bulldogs.
    • No. 8 Limon 8, No. 9 Lyons 7. Limon walked it off with an extra-inning win in the eighth.
    • No. 4 Strasburg 14, No. 13 Fort Lupton 2. Strasburg broke up a game that was 3-2 in the fourth to advance. Jodie Archuleta hit a three-run homer in the win.
    • No. 5 Riverdale Ridge 7, No. 12 The Academy 2. Sienna Mullin homered as Riverdale Ridge won a state tournament game for the first time in school history.
    • No. 3 Brush 11, No. 14 Cedaredge 1. Brush jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning en route to the win.
    • No. 6 Eaton 8, No. 11 Rocky Ford 2. Jennifer Jarnagin homered and Alexis Schmitt allowed just one earned run in the win.
    • No. 2 Basalt 13, No. 15 La Junta 12. In a wild game, Basalt scored eight runs in the the first inning, then La Junta came storming back to go ahead 12-11 in the top of the sixth. Basalt tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and won it in the seventh.
    • No. 7 Sterling 10, No. 10 Montezuma Cortez 5. Sterling rallied from down 2-1 through three innings to go ahead 6-3 after four, and pushed its lead to 9-4 after five in the win.

    In quarterfinal games:

    • No. 1 University 12, No. 8 Limon 3. Andi Padilla and Kyra McFarland each homered for the Bulldogs, who led 9-3 after five innings.
    • No. 4 Strasburg 6, No. 5 Riverdale Ridge 5. Strasburg used a two-run home run to take a 4-3 lead, then held on for the 6-5 win over the Ravens.
    • No. 3 Brush 12, No. 6 Eaton 2. Allie Christensen homered, and Brooke Rule drove in four runs for the Beetdiggers.

    • No. 1 Golden 14, No. 8 Roosevelt 5. Kayla Middleton went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s and she scored four runs for the Demons.
    • No. 5 Silver Creek 9, No. 4 Wheat Ridge 4. Down 1-0 in the second, Silver Creek tied the game, then went ahead with three runs in the third. The Raptors added four more in the fourth and another in the sixth.
    • No. 14 Erie 10, No. 11 D’Evelyn 4. Lauren Russel’s home run to start the third inning gave the Tigers some breathing room. They held on despite a late rally attempt from the Jags.
    • No. 2 Holy Family 5, No. 10 Pueblo Central 3. Annika Manzanares homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers.

    In first round games:

    • No. 16 Ralston Valley 6, No. 1 Rock Canyon 3. In a game that was the talk of the morning, Sydney Wilken hit a three-run home run to tie the game in the top of the fourth, and then Ralston Valley went ahead for good with a double from Ashley West later in the inning.     • No. 9 Loveland 7, No. 8 Brighton 1. Loveland went ahead 3-0 after the first inning, tacked on two more on a home from Allison Westbrook, and secured a spot in the quarters.
    • No. 4 Broomfield 13, No. 13 Legend 5. Broomfield raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first, held on as Legend cut it to 5-4, and then went back up 8-4 after four in the win.
    • No. 5 Fossil Ridge 9, No. 12 Lakewood 5. Katelyn Hays went deep and drove in two runs for the Sabercats.
    • No. 3 Rocky Mountain 5, No. 14 Ralston Valley 4. Kaia Cobb homered and the Lobos edged out the close win.

    • No. 16 Ralston Valley 4, No. 9 Loveland 1. The Mustangs continued their tear through the 5A tournament with another big upset. RV jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and pushed it to 4-0 after four.
    • No. 5 Fossil Ridge 6, No. 4 Broomfield 4. Fossil Ridge jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and went up 4-1 after two, but Broomfield battled back to tie it at 4in the third. Fossil Ridge played two in the top of the seventh to win.
    • No. 3 Rocky Mountain 11, No. 6 Arapahoe 1. Chloe Pentico hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first, Cora Aguirres homered twice, and Brooklyn Himmelberg drove in three runs for the Lobos. Photos from the game are available here.

  • Big innings spark University to its first 3A softball state title

    AURORA — The third time proved to be the charm for the University softball team.

    The top-seeded Bulldogs, who scored three runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning, earned their first-ever Class 3A softball championship by beating Brush, 8-4, Saturday at Aurora Sports Park.

    In the process, University avenged its only two losses of the year, both to the Beetdiggers. Brush beat University, 14-13, on Sept. 21 and 19-4 on Oct. 8.

    “Coach (Rocky Ford) told us before the game that it’s really hard to beat a team three times in a season, and we proved that today,” said junior shortstop Delaney Wieneke. “They knew us; we knew them. We knew it was going to be a tough game … it always is. We were excited to play them.”

    Wieneke went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. She broke open a scoreless game with a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning and added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

    “I’m not sure how to feel right now. It’s a lot of mixed emotions,” Wieneke admitted. “We were a family this whole season. So having this feeling of being a state champ is so awesome; it’s great.”

    Said Ford: “(Delaney) is out of this world. She’s a whole different breed. Every time she’s up to bat you never know how far she’s going to hit the ball. She hits the ball a ton. That home run she hit probably went 250 (feet), no problem.”

    Ashlynn Knapp added to the Bulldogs’ offensive explosion with a home run of her own in the bottom of the fifth inning that turned a 3-2 lead for University into a 6-2 advantage.

    “Our coach wanted us to double our score,” Knapp explained. “Two outs, two runners on … I went up there thinking ‘base-hit.’ I wasn’t thinking long-ball or anything like that. But all of my techniques were right, and it ended up going over. Not expected, but very exciting!”

    Knapp, a sophomore, played first base for the Bulldogs. Normally the team’s right fielder, Knapp filled in for senior Tayler Frank, who injured her leg on Friday.

    “That was one of the hardest games I have ever played … the most pressure,” Knapp confessed. “I’m just glad my team had a ton of faith in me playing first base because I haven’t played there all season.”

    Fittingly, Knapp made the final out of the game when she nabbed Alexis Corral’s grounder and stepped on the bag to help the Bulldogs make history.

    “That last ground ball was probably one of the hardest I have ever fielded, knowing there was two outs in the top of the seventh,” Knapp recalled with a smile. “I just appreciate our team being like a family this weekend. This is the happiest I have ever seen this team.”

    Sophomore pitcher Kayla Kingsley went the distance for University, which finished the season with a record of 26-2. Kingsley struck out four and walked just one batter.

    “It feels so amazing! I am so happy!” she revealed. “We were just confident going into this game, and that helped a lot. I had a few moments where I was shaky and hesitant, but I worked to ignore it and move on.

    “This team is so supportive and so helpful, and they always keep me up,” Kingsley added. “It helps so much … to have a nice team that’s always there for you.”

    The victory marked the 15th girls team championship for University and the first since the Bulldogs won a spirit title last year. Overall, it is the 22nd state title for the Bulldogs.

    Catcher Grace Georgiou led the way for the Beetdiggers, who finished the season with a record of 22-6.

    Georgiou went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. She belted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning and added an RBI single in the top of the sixth to keep Brush in the game.

    The Beetdiggers, the No. 3 seed, advanced to the championship game by beating Sterling in the semifinals, 11-9, earlier Saturday.

    The Bulldogs earned their shot at redemption by beating two-time defending state champion Strasburg in the semifinals (13-2 in five innings).

    “Positive thinking … helped us a lot,” Wieneke said. “We never take Strasburg lightly, no matter what. We played hard that game; that one felt good, but this one is a different kind of feeling.

    “It’s absolutely sweeter beating Brush.”

    “The girls worked hard all season long,” Ford added. They showed up right away, from our pitching to our defense to our home runs. It feels great.”

  • State softball brackets released for all classes

    Another week and another sport determining its state champions. With softball regional play completed over the weekend, the fields for the state softball tournaments were determined on Saturday.

    Monday was the day teams and fans were waiting for as the brackets were released for Class 5A, 4A and 3A.

    The state tournaments will begin on Friday at Aurora Sports Park with championships to be decided on Saturday.

    Rock Canyon enters the 5A tournament as the top overall seed. The Jaguars won the Region 1 tournament and outscored their opponents 27-0 in two games.

    Columbine, Rocky Mountain and Broomfield round out the top four heading into Friday’s games. Defending champion Legend is the No. 13 seed and takes on Broomfield in its first game of the tournament.

    Golden takes the top seed in the 4A tournament following a strong regular season and a regional championship that included wins over Weld Central and Mesa Ridge.

    Defending champion Holy Family is the No. 2 seed while Pueblo South and Wheat Ridge round out the top four.

    In 3A, University comes in as the top overall seed after beating La Junta to claim a regional title. The Bulldogs are hoping 2019 turns out to be an historic runs as they have never won a state softball championship.

    Basalt comes in at No. 2 and Brush is the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Two-time defending champion Strasburg begins its hunt for its third straight title as the No. 4 seed.

    First round games for all classes will begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 25.

    An asterisk indicates that the team won its region. All regional champions will be seeded Nos. 1-8 at the state tournament.
