  • Football roundup: Belleview Christian wins its first game in five years

    Belleview Christian Miami-Yoder football
(Winslet Chen & Brandon Kamm/Belleview Christian)

Belleview Christian won its first football game since 2012 on Saturday.

The Bruins beat Miami-Yoder 18-14 during their homecoming contest. It was their first victory since Oct. 6, 2012 against Justice — five years and one day ago.

The 8-man football program started in the fall of 2012, and went 2-6. Belleview Christian was then 0-7 in 2013, and didn’t field a team in 2014 nor 2015. The Bruins returned to the field last season, and went 0-6.

It means Saturday’s win, which was the first varsity win for second-year coach Darius Oller, also snapped a 17-game losing streak.

    Notables:

    • Coaches Scott Yates (Kent Denver) and Chris Brown (West Grand) remained tied atop Colorado’s all-times wins list this week as both of their teams won. Kent Denver beat Ridge View Academy on Friday, and West Grand beat Plateau Valley 46-0 on Saturday.
    • In a 6-man game that was delayed from Friday night because of a faulty light, No. 2 Stratton/Liberty cruised to a 53-6 win over No. 3 Cheyenne Wells.

  • Football roundup: 4A No. 7 Fruita Monument beats 3A No. 2 Discovery Canyon

An early three-touchdown lead for Fruita Monument is exactly how the Wildcats were looking to pace their second win of the year.

That lead took Discovery Canyon away from the running game that got them to the 2016 Class 3A state title game and ultimately led to a 49-14 for Fruita.

“We’re ahead of where we were last year,” Wildcats coach Todd Casebier said. “I thought our defense good a job of taking away the inside run game. It kind of forced them to go outside and we have really good athletes on the edge.”

By the time Treyton Queen trotted into the end zone to make it a 21-0 game, the Thunder (0-1 overall) was forced to do something it doesn’t do often: go to the air.

Quarterback Zach Anderson found Caleb Grotelueschen for a 78-yard touchdown pass to finally get Discovery Canyon on the board.

But that’s about as close as the game would get. The Wildcats (2-0) came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and got the season off with a win against a traditionally tough opponent.

“It’s no more or less important than the win last week,” Casebier said. “It’s a good sign of where we’re at.”

    (1) Pine Creek 23, ThunderRidge 7

David Moore III ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns as Class 4A No. 1 Pine Creek topped 5A’s ThunderRidge 23-9.

Quarterback J.C. Coulter found Gene McFarland through the air for the Eagles’ other touchdown on the day.

    (5) Peyton 49, Byers 0

Trevor Walker ran for 108 yards and scored one of six rushing touchdowns for Peyton in its 49-0 win over Byers.

The seventh touchdown for the Panthers came on a Charles Sparks punt return.

Rocky Mountain Lutheran 65, Custer County 18

Charlie Hahm had himself a nice little Saturday as he ran for 244 yards and six touchdowns. He added one catch for 60 yards that also went for a touchdown.

The Eagles are 1-0 to start the year in 8-man play.

  • All-state baseball teams for the 2017 season

The 2017 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Four of five defending champions head preseason polls

    Eaglecrest boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

For the most part, the defending state champions come into the 2016-17 basketball season as the big dogs in the yard.

Pueblo West, Colorado Springs Christian, Sanford and Fleming all took the top spot in their respective CHSAANow.com preseason basketball polls.

The only defending champion to not hold the top spot is Overland, which did not make the top 10 in the Class 5A rankings.

The top spot in that class goes to Eaglecrest, which finished runner-up last season. Colbey Ross will be back for his senior season and will look to lead the Raptors to another state title.

Rock Canyon (No. 2), Denver East (No. 3), ThunderRidge (No. 4) all got first-place votes to start the season.

    Pueblo West boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

In 4A, the two teams that ended last season all top will start this season in the same position. Pueblo West holds the top spot in 4A with Valor Christian nipping at the heels of the Cyclones at No. 2.

Pueblo West came away with a 70-51 win over the Eagles to take the state championship. David Simental returns for his senior season at Pueblo West and is looking to turn heads as he did in last year’s state tournament.

He’d also like to win a second-straight title for the Cyclones.

Colorado Springs Christian takes the No. 1 spot in 3A after winning it’s second-straight championship. The Lions lose big man Sam Howard, but guard Justin Engesser does return for his senior year.

After winning its third-straight title last year, Sanford comes into the season as the No. 1 team in 2A and is just one win away from history.

If the Indians win their season opener, they will set the record for most consecutive wins in state history. They currently sit tied with Ridgway, who won 73 straight games from 1993-96.

After missing out on the 2015 state title by a point, Fleming rebounded to capture last year’s 1A championship and will start the season at No. 1 as a result.

The boys basketball regular season begins Nov. 30.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Volleyball rankings: Rock Canyon among preseason No. 1 teams

    Rock Canyon Legend volleyball
Rock Canyon leads the 5A volleyball preseason poll. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

After a wild finish at the 2015 state volleyball tournament, it looks like the fun is going to continue in 2016.

Three defending champions sit at No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings while two other squads are coming into the year with heavy expectations being placed on their shoulders.

After cruising through pool play only to fall in the semifinals, Rock Canyon comes in at No. 1 in the Class 5A volleyball rankings to start the year.

The Jaguars lost two seniors from last year’s team, but outside hitter Keeley Davis and libero Kendall Hanak both return.

Defending state champion, Cherokee Trail comes in at No. 5 to start the year with Fairview, Chatfield and Denver East filling the spots in between.

After being the first team in Colorado to take down two-time defending champion, Lewis-Palmer, Cheyenne Mountain claims the top spot in the 4A rankings. The Indians received 12 of 13 first place votes as the Rangers took the other one. That helped them take the No. 2 spot behind their league rivals.

Evergreen and Ponderosa take the next two spots in the poll after each team advanced to last year’s semifinals.

At No. 10, Pueblo West comes in as the only ranked 4A team that did not make last year’s state tournament.

    Eaton volleyball team
Eaton leads the 3A poll. (Matt Daniels/MattDanPhoto.com)

In 3A, someone is going to have to knock off Eaton before anyone will be convinced the Reds should not be the No. 1 team in the state.

Eaton has rattled off three straight state titles and have not lost a match since Sept. 14, 2014. The No. 1 ranking is a clear message to the 3A field: to be the champ, you have to beat the champ.

The 3A rankings are also filled with a lot of familiar names over the last few seasons. Valley (No. 2), University (No. 3), Colorado Springs Christian (No. 4), Platte Valley (No. 6) and Manitou Springs (No. 8) all carried over success from last season into this year’s rankings.

After beating Resurrection Christian (a 3A team from here on out) in last year’s state title match, Yuma comes in as the top team in the 2A rankings.

The Indians have played for the 2A title for the last two seasons and by taking six of 11 first place votes, they come in as a favorite to advance to the title match for the third-straight year.

With Resurrection Christian now out of 2A, Paonia (No. 2) and Lyons (No. 3) now become the most likely to contend with Yuma for the 2A title.

At No. 10, Byers is the only ranked team in 2A that did not make last year’s state tournament.

After making the semifinals but failing to advance to the title match, Fleming comes in as the No. 1 team in 1A.

Defending champion Otis will come in slightly under the radar to start this year, sitting at No. 7, with state runner-up Idalia sitting right behind the Bulldogs at No. 8.

Briggsdale (No. 5) and Caliche (No. 9) are the two teams ranked in the preseason that did not make last year’s state tournament.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.

Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.
