  • State volleyball: Cherry Creek leads day of upsets as tourney opens

    DENVER — To start the volleyball season, Mountain Vista handed Cherry Creek one of its two losses on the year. To start the state tournament, the Bruins returned the favor.

    Cherry Creek battled to a 21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-7 win over the Golden Eagles, knock off the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A bracket. It was just one of many upsets across all five classifications on Friday at the Denver Coliseum.

    Mountain Vista won the regular season opener between the two teams. That match also went to five sets.

    “It was motivation to come in here and beat them,” coach Sally Moos said.

    The Golden Eagles claimed the first set of the match, putting the Bruins into a quick hole. It was all tied up after two, but Mountain Vista again pulled ahead, putting Creek on the verge of defeat and losing any control over its own fate.

    Even at that point, there was no panic from the Centennial League’s only representative at the tournament. 

    “I don’t think so,” junior outside hitter Katie Sherman said. “We were all just so into (the match) and we wanted to win it so bad.”

    So they battled. The fourth set remained tight until Creek pulled away at the end. They came out in the fifth and dominated from the start, jumping out to a 11-3 lead.

    Mountain Vista started to rally back, but the Sherman put down one last kill to give the Bruins control of Pool I.

    “We wanted to win that so bad,” Sherman said. “They’re probably our biggest rival. We’re super excited.”

    Cherry Creek finished the regular season with just two losses. The first came against the Golden Eagles. The second loss was back on Sept. 16 against Rock Canyon. Cherry Creek evened the score against Rocky Mountain in the Legend Tournament on Oct. 28.

    The Bruins and the Lobos will play Saturday morning and a win by Creek means advancement to the semifinals. 

    “Rocky Mountain is a very good team, too,” Moos said. “We’ll do the same thing, we’ll battle back and forth.”

    Other upsets shake up the pools

    Denver East continued 5A’s upset trend in the third match of day when the No. 11-seeded Angels swept No. 2 Fossil Ridge, the defending champions.

    The Angels, who are now 21-6 this season, swept the Sabercats 25-23, 25-22, 25-20.

    “They stuck to the gameplan,” Denver East coach Tarah Olmstead said after the match. “They ran outside their comfort zone, which is what we are supposed to do every single day. We watch film on everybody here. We know what everybody does before we even know our own rotations. And they called it, they stayed on top.”

    Denver East last advanced to the state tournament two years ago, but only two players remain from that team.

    “What’s really tough is we have a ton of people who have never been here before,” Olmstead said. “We only have two people who have been here. And their eyes, when they’re walking in, are all over the place. So in order to keep them present, I said, ‘Look around, Snapchat, I don’t care what you have to do, do it right now. But the second we get in there, you are present and you are with each other, because that’s what everybody came to watch.’”

    The Angels will have the chance to win their pool and advance to the semifinals by beating Chatfield on Saturday.

    And with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds already the victims of upsets, No. 10 Rock Canyon was looking to make it a hat trick against No. 3 Castle View.

    The Jaguars fell behind 2-0 early, though both sets they lost were close. They battled back in the third to avoid the sweep and and evened things up after the fourth set.

    With momentum on their side, they went into the fifth and deciding set believing they could get the win.

    The Sabercats jumped out in front and seemingly had control with a 10-6 lead. But Rock Canyon had battled back to tie up the overall match, so coming back to tie the final set seemed like child’s play.

    Down 14-11, the Jaguars rode a couple of key kills from Keeley Davis to pull even. Davis made the final kill to give the Jags a 16-14 win in the deciding set of the match.

    “(Early on) it was just the nerves at state,” Davis said. “We have a lot of new people who are here in this big coliseum. I think once we set those nerves off and we started getting excited and being happy about things, we started getting less nervous.”

    Rock Canyon will play Coronado Saturday morning and can advance to the 5A semifinals by winning that match.

    Other upsets on Friday included:

    • In 1A, No. 9 Holly knocked off No. 4 McClave 3-2 to start the day, including 15-3 in the fifth set.
    • In 2A‘s first match of the day, No. 9 Denver Christian upset No. 4 Hoehne, 3-1.
    • Simla threw a second wrench into the 2A tourney when the No. 11 Cubs upset No. 2 Swink with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 sweep.
    • No. 5 Otis over No. 4 McClave in 1A, 3-1.
    • 2A No. 6 Lyons beat No. 3 Dayspring Christian 3-1.

    Notables

    State volleyball Buena Vista fans

    • Buena Vista had probably the largest, and loudest, crowd of the day. The students at Buena Vista took a field trip to the Denver Coliseum on Friday. The school picked up the tab to get as many students as possible to support the Demons at state.
    • Kit Carson’s incredible run of not losing a set continued on Friday. The Wildcats swept Weldon Valley and Briggsdale, and have now won all 72 sets they’ve played this season.
    • Lewis-Palmer, the defending champion and No. 1 seed in 4A, extended its match winning streak to 56 with sweeps of Mullen and Roosevelt. The Rangers are ranked No. 5 nationally by MaxPreps.
    • Eaton is in search of a fifth-straight championship in 3A. The Reds opened their tournament with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-10 sweep of Platte Valley, and then swept Lamar in the evening.

    Semifinal berths clinched

    • Yuma won 2A’s Pool I with wins over Dolores and Rangely.
    • Niwot captured 4A’s Pool IV. The Cougars beat Discovery Canyon and Palmer Ridge.
    • Chaparral won Pool IV in 5A with wins over Fort Collins and Fruita Monument.
    • Kit Carson, after its two sweeps, clinched Pool I in 1A.
    • University won 3A’s Pool IV following wins over Middle Park and Resurrection Christian.
    • Lewis-Palmer will meet Niwot in the 4A semifinals after winning Pool I.
    • Fleming topped Genoa-Hugo and Springfield to win Pool II in 1A.
    • Eaton is back in the 3A semifinals following sweeps over Platte Valley and Lamar.
    • La Veta got wins over Sangre de Cristo and Wiley to win 1A’s Pool III.
    • Lutheran beat Sterling and Bennett in winning Pool II in 2A.
    • Valor Christian beat Cheyenne Mountain and Pueblo West as it won 4A’s Pool II.
    • Holy Family topped Ponderosa and D’Evelyn in winning Pool III in 4A.
    • Faith Christian beat Buena Vista and Valley is it won Pool III in 3A.

  • State volleyball’s pools unveiled ahead of this weekend’s tournaments

    AURORA — The pools have been set for this weekend’s state volleyball tournaments.

    All five classifications had their tournaments seeded by a committee on Monday.Find each classification’s pools and schedule here:

    All matches will be held at the Denver Coliseum. Tickets are available here. Matches will also be streamed on the NFHS Network.

    Each tournament features four pools of three teams, with each team playing one another. Every pool sends its winner to the semifinals on Saturday. The championship matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.

    Top seeds for each tournament this season include Mountain Vista (5A), Lewis-Palmer (4A), Eaton (3A), Yuma (2A) and Kit Carson (1A).

    Each of the five defending champions also qualified for the state tournament, including Lewis-Palmer and Eaton. Eaton is actually a four-time defending champion, while Lewis-Palmer has won three of the past four 4A titles.

    Fossil Ridge, the defending 5A champ, is the No. 2 seed; Dayspring Christian, the 2016 2A champ, is seeded third; and reigning 1A champ Fleming is a No. 2 seed.

    Mountain Vista, Yuma and Kit Carson each finished as runner-up last season.

  • Football roundup: Ralston Valley knocks off 4A No. 1 Pine Creek

    Ralston Valley football picked up a huge win on Friday night, knocking off top-ranked Pine Creek and ending the Eagles’ state-best 15-game winning streak.

    The Mustangs grabbed a 17-7 lead at halftime thanks to a field goal as time expired. They then held on in the second half, including one last stop with a minute left to seal the win.

    Ralston Valley, a Class 5A program, is now 2-3 this season following an 0-3 start. Pine Creek, which plays in 4A, drops to 4-1.

    Both teams begin conference play next week.

    Blake Stenstrom threw two touchdown passes, Joshia Davis rushed for 118 and a score and caught a TD pass, and the Eagles got yet another big win in their non-conference slate.

    Valor Christian is now 5-0.

    “We feel like playing great teams helps us refine what we need to do,” Valor Christian coach Rod Sherman told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “We’re not scared to lose. This is the first time in five, six, seven years that we’ve actually been undefeated out of our non-conference. If you’re not scared to lose, then these games are really good, because it helps you grow.”

    Sherman pointed to his team’s ability to run the football, and stop Cherry Creek from doing the same, as one of the differences in the game.

    “With a team like Creek, they’re so talented and they do such a great job coaching, if you let them be balanced, you’re in trouble,” he said. “And ultimately we ran the ball really well and we stopped the run.”

    1A: Aspen 34, Coal Ridge 28

    Aspen entered 4-0, and Coal Ridge was 3-1, so their matchup on Friday was a good one. Ultimately, the Skiers won 34-28 to improved to 5-0.

    Aspen won just two games last season, and hadn’t won five games in a season since 2013. It’s Aspen’s best start since opening 7-0 in 2010.

    “We challenged (the kids) to understand what it takes to be successful,” Aspen coach Karson Pike told the Scoreboard Show about the team’s turnaround. “They did a good job this summer and this spring. … That’s really where we grew up.”

    2A: (5) La Junta 21, (3) The Classical Academy 11

    The Tigers picked up a big top-five win a week after dropping another top-five matchup.

    “It was a big win for us to get back on the winning track,” La Junta coach Clint Buderus told the Scoreboard Show. “The kids played good. It was huge for us.”

    La Junta, the defending 2A champion, had its 16-game winning streak snapped last Saturday in a loss to now No. 1 Kent Denver. So this win was a big bounce-back following that game.

    “We played better tonight,” Buderus said.

    1A: (1) Bennett 76, (10) Clear Creek 36

    The top-ranked Tigers handed Clear Creek its first loss this season.

    Bennett rushed for more than 600 yards in the game, including 515 in the first half.

    Bennett, which reached the semifinals last season, is now 5-0 this season. Clear Creek is 4-1.

    8-man (3) Haxtun 29, (8) Dayspring Christian 21

    A fourth-quarter touchdown lifted Haxtun to the win and a 5-0 start this season.

    • Sedgwick County, ranked No. 1 in 8-man, beat Akron 48-24 in a matchup of the past two state title games in that classification. “I thought our offensive line did a great job digging in in the second half and getting us some big yards,” coach Chris Michel told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 4A No. 9 Pueblo South beat 3A Pueblo East 34-19 in the annual Cannon game. East, the three-time defending 3A champs, has opened the year 0-5. “There is just so much that goes into this, I don’t think people truly understand how things are in Pueblo, especially the rivalries, but I’m just proud of our kids tonight,” South coach Ryan Goddard told the Scoreboard Show. South is 4-1.
    • In 3A, No. 3 Palmer Ridge cruised to a 43-0 win over No. 10 Canon City. Quarterback Ty Evans threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another. “When we give Ty time, he does a really good job going through his progression, and he’s a competitor,” coach Tom Pulford told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 2A No. 1 Kent Denver shut out Elizabeth 35-0, giving coach Scott Yates his 320th career win. 8-man No. 4 West Grand shut out Hayden 50-0, giving coach Chris Brown his 320th win. Both men lead the state in career wins.
    • Brighton came back from down 21 to beat Fort Collins 28-21.
    • Skyview is 5-0 for the first time in program history following its 48-21 win over Lincoln.
    • La Veta upset 6-man No. 8 Cotopaxi 71-38.
    • Mountain Valley got three touchdowns each from Salvador Vigil and Drew Martinez in a 60-13 win over Aguilar.
    • Ta’yon Burton returned a kickoff for a score as Manual beat Front Range Christian 27-0.
    • Pretty big win for Fountain-Fort Carson in 5A: 35-26 over Doherty.
    • Mead looks ready for the No. 1 spot in 3A. The Longhorns, currently No. 2 handled Fort Morgan 51-14. Current No. 1 Holy Family lost on Thursday.
    • Ikaika Gonzalez-Bentosino rushed for 266 yards and two scores as Englewood beat Sheridan 58-0 in 2A.
    • Vista Ridge beat Discovery Canyon 35-21 in a 4A/3A matchup behind big rushing days from Jeffrey Crittendon (218 yards, two TDs) and Jaylen Thomas (183, 1). Thomas also had two passing TDs.
    • Travis Cunningham rushed for two scores and Austin Coalson passed for two as Eaton beat University 33-6 in a 2A game.

  • Football roundup: No. 1 Kent Denver beats No. 4 La Junta in state title rematch

    After failing to beat La Junta twice last year, Kent Denver needed this one. And with a late field goal, the top-ranked team in the Class 2A CHSAANow.com football poll got it.

    The Sun Devils came away with a 10-7 win over the Tigers to somewhat avenge last year’s defeats, the latter of which came in the 2A state title game.

    “Anytime you lose the state championship game you have a bad taste in your mouth,” Kent Denver coach Scott Yates said. “All our kids and coaches wanted to try and erase it.”

    The win is the 319th for Yates, who remains tied with West Grand’s Chris Brown for the most in state history.

    The Tigers (3-1 overall) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.

    But the lead wouldn’t hold.

    Kent Denver (4-0) was able to tie the game before halftime and the two teams came out unwilling to give each other any more points.

    Still locked in a 7-7 tie, it was Kent Denver who would get the edge as Quinn Voboril kicked a late field goal which proved to be the game winner.

    “We had to stop them in order to get the ball with enough time to go down the field. That created a little momentum for us,” Yates said. “It gives you an uplift and said let’s do something with it. We marched the ball down the field pretty well.”

    The Sun Devils open league play next week when they hit the road and travel to Elizabeth. The Tigers also begin league play next week, hosting TCA.

    8-man: (8) Hoehne 44, (2) Daypsring Christian 37

    Hoehne built a 22-8 lead at halftime, but Dayspring Christian did everything possible to make up ground in the second half. But 22 points in the third quarter alone wasn’t going to cut it.

    The Farmers were able to put up 22 more points in the second half and finish off the upset over 8-man’s second-ranked team.

    Senior Jacob Yates had 202 yards and two touchdowns for Hoehne. Kyle Rowe also rushed for two scores, and Riley Hudson added one.

    Christian Still, a freshman, tossed three touchdown passes for Dayspring Christian — all of them to senior Jimmy Fargo.

    5A: (5) Regis Jesuit 24, (9) Highlands Ranch 0

    It took Regis Jesuit almost a full 24 minutes of game time to find the end zone. But after scoring just once in the first half, the Raiders turned up the heat in the second.

    They added two touchdowns and field goal to get a big win over a top-10 opponent.

    1A: (3) Strasburg 14, (4) Limon 12

    Strasburg handed Limon its first loss of the season on Saturday.

    The Indians scored touchdown a in each the first and fourth quarters and that was all that was needed to move to 3-1 on the season.

    Merino remained undefeated on the year with a 14-8 win over McClave. It’s the first loss for the Cardinals, who broke into the 8-man rankings last week.

    • No. 3 Cheyenne Wells beat No. 5 Kit Carson in a top-10 game in 6-man, 14-12.
    • Monarch is now 4-0 following a 14-10 win over Brighton in 4A.
    • Blayden Fletcher rushed for five touchdowns and 227 yards in North Park’s 47-42 win over Briggsdale. He also had 11 tackles and a sack on defense.
    • Noah Roper’s great season continues: He had 276 yards and three touchdowns as Erie beat Centaurus 38-13 in 3A. Erie is 4-0.
    • 5A No. 10 Fairview rolled over Prairie View 68-0. Sophomore quarterback Aiden Atkinson threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns. Mariano Kemp, Brian Moreno and Jake Sheerin each rushed for two scores. Sheerin also had a receiving touchdown.
    • Calvin Pope rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown as Denver East beat Hinkley 50-19 for its first win this season.
    • Gilpin County improved to 3-1 following a 54-0 win over Belleview Christian.
    • Thane Duzenack threw a touchdown pass for Mitchell and the Marauders beat Ridge View Academy 22-6 to win their first game this season.
    • Golden beat Far Northeast 17-14. David O’Connell threw two touchdown passes. Jack Walters recovered two fumbles.
    • James LaCerte had two touchdowns and 182 yards rushing for Cheyenne Mountain in its 30-7 win over Lincoln.
    • DJ King threw three touchdowns and had 199 yards passing as Mesa Ridge beat George Washington 49-22. Ju-Wan Edgerton added two rushing scores.
    • Grant Baker returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown, and then held up as Colorado Springs Christian beat Valley 7-0.
