    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

The defending Class 4A girls soccer champs are gaining ground.

Lewis-Palmer jumped a spot to come in at No. 2 in the 4A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings. They sit only behind No. 1 Valor Christian, the team the Rangers beat in the title game last year.

They weren’t the only one making their way up the poll, however. Windsor jumped two spots to land at No. 5 and Evergreen better their position by three spots, coming in at No. 7.

Rounding out the final set of girls rankings is Durango, the only newcomer in 4A.

Cherry Creek kept its grasp on the No. 1 spot in the 5A poll, but this week it’s Mountain Vista sitting at No. 2.

Columbine jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 5, but it was Rocky Mountain with the big leap, gaining four spots to take the No. 6 position.

Legacy was the lone newcomer to the 5A poll, coming in at No. 7.

Jefferson Academy remains the top team in 3A, taking seven of nine first-place votes. The other two went to No. 2 Colorado Academy.

Overall, the top seven teams in the 3A rankings held their spots from last week.

There were no new teams in the 3A poll.

No one in 2A could unseat Denver Christian who held on to the No. 1 spot in the poll.

Front Range Christian jumped two spots to land at No. 3.

At No. 5, Telluride is the only new team in the 2A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

New polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Colorado Academy falls just one spot to No. 2.

Manitou Springs has continued its steady climb, gaining one spot to take position at No. 4.

At No. 10, Denver Science & Tech: Stapleton is the only new team in the 3A poll.

  • 3A boys hoops Great 8 roundup: Strong second half propels Sterling into semis

    Sterling boys basketball team
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER – Every time Manitou Springs senior Lucas Rodholm hit a big shot Thursday night – and there were plenty of them – Sterling’s boys basketball team hand an answer.

The Tigers never allowed the second-seeded Mustangs the opportunity to close gap down the stretch of the Class 3A state quarterfinal game at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gymnasium. Instead, it was No. 10 Sterling that punched its ticket into Friday’s Final 4 after a 58-50 victory.

“It’s a great feeling. Our school hasn’t been to the final four since I think they won (4A in 2011),” Sterling senior Riley Schaefer said. “We’ve worked so hard. I’m just glad we got this – I think we deserve it.”

The Tigers (20-5) face two-time defending state champion Colorado Springs Christian at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Top-seeded Kent Denver draws Faith Christian in the other semifinal.

“It will be a huge challenge. The (Justin) Engesser kid is really, really good and they’re really well-coached,” Tigers coach Mike Holloway said. “We’ll come back and hope to play our best game of the season, because that’s certainly what it will take.”

Rodholm scored a game-high 30 points for Manitou Springs (22-3). He did most of his damage in the second half, but Sterling responded each time. Schaefer hit a pair of big 3-pointers in the third quarter, and sophomore Carter Keil also had a big half.

“I think when we hits some 3s, they really had to get out on us,” Schaefer said. “It helped us – we could give a pump-fake and we could get by them and get people open.”

Keil and Bodie Hume combined for 30 points to pace Sterling.

    (1) Kent Denver 56, (9) Basalt 54

The top-seeded Sun Devils trailed by 10 points headed into the fourth quarter, but Kent Denver rallied behind a number of big shots to hold off Basalt’s upset bid.

Coby Gold scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. Rory Buck put the Sun Devils (22-3) up by one with 1:44 to go, and Kent went 5-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to put it away.

Michael Glen scored a game-high 31 points for the Longhorns (21-4), but the team struggled to find its shot in the fourth quarter. It was the team’s first Great 8 appearance since 1989.

    [divider]

    (3) Colorado Springs Christian 57, (6) DSST-Stapleton 53

The Lions overcame a rough first quarter that saw Denver School of Science & Technology-Stapleton score 24 points.

No. 3 Colorado Springs Christian (23-2) trailed by 13 at one point in the first half before going on a 40-23 run to close out the game. The two-time defending state champions got a clutch 27-point effort from Justin Engesser, who was 10-of-15 shooting on the day. Noah Hopkins added 12 points and Zach Wisner had 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Knights (21-4) had six players finish with at least seven points, led by Andray Thomas’ 12. Blake Pullen added 11 points, but DSST-Stapleton shot just 37.5 percent from the floor in the second half while the Lions were 12-of-18.

    [divider]

    (13) Faith Christian 76, (12) Alamosa 59

The Eagles continued their impressive run into the semifinals, scoring 54 points in the second half to take down 12th-seeded Alamosa.

Faith Christian (17-8) was coming off a victory over previously undefeated Resurrection Christian. The Eagles trailed by four points after the first quarter Thursday before taking control of the game.

Jonah Gardner shot 11-of-15 from the field for a game-high 35 points, and Benjamin Hawkins added 14.

Noah Romero and Ryan Brubacher scored 13 points each to lead Alamosa (20-4). Brubacher only played a little more than 11 minutes after sustaining an injury early.

Valor Christian boys basketball is the new No. 1 in Class 4A. The Eagles escaped Evergreen in a 54-53 win last week.

The previous top team in the CHSAANow.com 4A rankings, Pueblo West, wasn’t so lucky. The Cyclones lost to Pueblo South 67-64 after being down 34-19 at halftime. Pueblo West didn’t fall too far however, sliding to the No. 2 spot.

That Pueblo South team got some recognition for the upset as they joined the 4A poll at No. 8.

3A also added a new team to the rankings. Manual came in at No. 10 in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.

In 5A, Doherty and Grandview swapped places, with the Spartans rising from No. 7 to No. 5. Doherty won its second-straight league title after beating Rampart. Grandview dropped after its loss to No. 4 Eaglecrest.

Chatfield continued the longest win streak in 5A to hold at No. 3. The Chargers’ streak is at 18 after clinching the 5A Jeffco title against Ralston Valley.

Dawson received one first place vote as they rose from No. 9 to No. 6 in the 2A poll. The top three teams remained the same in 2A.

Crowley County entered the 2A rankings at No. 8.

In 1A, Longmont Christian moved from No. 6 to No. 4, swapping with Flagler.

Weldon Valley dropped out, making room for Primero to jump into the rankings at No. 10.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Lewis-Palmer jumps up in 4A poll

    Lewis-Palmer Vista Ridge boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Lewis-Palmer is making the right moves at the right time when it comes to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

After beating Sand Creek just over a week ago, the Rangers put on another impressive showing with a 65-56 win over PPAC front-runner Vista Ridge. With everyone now paying attention, Lewis-Palmer jumps four spots to land at No. 4 this week.

Pueblo West, Valor Christian and D’Evelyn all stood their ground at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Sierra also made a significant move as the Stallions are at No. 6, three spots better than last week’s poll. Mead broke into the poll this week at No. 8.

ThunderRidge remains the top team in the 5A poll and rightfully so considering the Grizzlies haven’t lost since Dec. 20 and are undefeated against Colorado teams.

Eaglecrest received two first-place votes and jumped one spot to No. 4 as a result.

Fort Collins is the lone newcomer to the poll, rounding it out at No. 4.

Resurrection Christian remains No. 1 in 3A after edging No. 4 Sterling on Friday. Colorado Springs Christian remains at No. 2 while Manitou Springs jumps one spot to No. 3.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings.

Undefeated Highland still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 2A poll. Fowler jumped three spots from a week ago, coming in at No. 7. Haxtun joins the 2A rankings at No. 8.

Holly is still the top team in 1A. The top four teams from last week’s ranking went unchanged this week.

There were some big moves however as Rocky Mountain Lutheran made a three-spot jump to No. 5 and at No. 6, Longmont Christian is four spots better than they were last week.

Kit Carson joins the 1A poll at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Pueblo West boys basketball returns to No. 1 in 4A

Pueblo West Valor Christian boys basketball
    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Pueblo West does not like falling out of the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

For the second time in three weeks, the Cyclones have regained the No. 1 spot after falling out (without a loss) of it.

Valor Christian jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 2. But that’s where most of the consistency in the 4A poll ends.

Holy Family made a five-spot jump to break into the top five and the bottom half of the poll saw three new teams. Northridge is in at No. 6, Lewis-Palmer is back in the poll at No. 8 and Sierra also makes its return at No. 9.

ThunderRidge has shown no desire to drop out of the top spot of the 5A, despite the solid play of the rest of the teams in the top-five, each of whom also held onto their spots.

Doherty re-enters the rankings at No. 7 this week, the only new team to enter the poll.

Resurrection Christian remains the No. 1 team in 3A, but Colorado Springs Christian jumps up to No. 2 thanks to a last-second with over this week’s No. 4, Manitou Springs.

At No. 10, Machebeuf is the lone newcomer in the 3A rankings.

    Dawson Highland boys basketball
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANOW.com)

Highland and Sedgwick Country remain the top two teams in the 2A rankings, but the No. 3 spot has a new look in the form of Del Norte.

The 2A poll had no new teams this week.

The poll in 1A overall looks very similar to what it was last week. Holly and Cheyenne Wells remain at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.

Sierra Grande jumped one spot to No. 3 and Rocky Mountain Lutheran also jumped a spot to come in at No. 8.

Like 2A, there were no new teams in the 1A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
