  • Alameda boys basketball in reach of first league title since 2001

    LAKEWOOD — There is still plenty of work to be done, but a Class 4A/3A Colorado 8 League title for Alameda’s boys basketball team is starting to come into focus.

    “The pressure is definitely on right now,” Alameda junior Luis Miera said after the Pirates’s 57-49 victory over Englewood on Tuesday edged Alameda International closer to ending nearly a two-decade long drought. “We’ve got to get three more wins.”

    According to Jeffco Public Schools’ league championship archive, Alameda hasn’t won a conference championship in boys basketball since the Pirates claimed the Jeffco 6 League title in the 2000-01 season. The court in the Duane Lewis Gymnasium is actually named after the last coach — Scott Smith — who guided Alameda to the league title 18 years ago.

    “It’s in our heads,” Alameda coach Geremey Gibson said of the chances becoming greater to capture that elusive league crown. “I tell my players one game at a time. If we take care of one game at a time we’ll be where we need to be in the end. We don’t want to look too far ahead.”

    Englewood (6-8, 2-3 in league) didn’t make the conference game easy in the all-Pirate battle. Senior Thomas O’Connor was unconscious from 3-point range through three quarters. O’Conner had five 3-pointers and a trio of free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point shot to score 18 points through three quarters.

    “He (O’Connor) was hitting a lot of 3s. We left him open a couple of times,” said Miera, who got the one-on-one task against O’Connor in the fourth quarter. “We decided to go man (defense) and I guarded him up.”

    O’Connor didn’t score in the fourth quarter with Miera shadowing him. However, Englewood sophomore Nate Gravagno had an incredible fourth quarter scoring all 18 points for Englewood to finish for a team-high 23 points on the night.

    “We just broke down mentally on defense,” Gibson admitted. “We’ve been trying to switch things up because we know teams are going to come at us with our zone. We broke down mentally and we can’t have that.”

    Alameda (14-3, 4-0) turned to Miera to close out the game in the final quarter on the offense end too. The senior scored 14 points in the final six minutes of the game to finish with a game-high 26 points.

    “It was definitely sluggish,” Alameda’s point guard said of the first half. “I was trying to get my teammates involved, but we couldn’t finish around the rim tonight. I figured I should take over the game. A couple of easy buckets, get to the free-throw line and do what I need to do to get this win.”

    Seniors Orlondo Aguilar (12 points), Derik Gutierrez (11 points) and Isiah Lawson (eight points) finished out the scoring load for Alameda in its fifth win over the past six games. The only setback over the last two weeks was a non-league loss to Aurora Central.

    Alameda’s toughest final hurdle toward a conference title might come Friday night. The Pirates take on Conifer (10-7, 3-1) up in the foothills. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

    “I’m looking forward to the game to be honest. It’s going to be a tough one,” Gibson said of facing Conifer. “This win prepares us and we’ll be ready for them.”

    Gibson added that slowing down the Lobos’ junior point guard Landon Wallace is going to be key. Wallace is nearing averaging a double-double in points and assists.

    “It’s going to be a tough one, but I think we can do it,” Miera said of the upcoming at Conifer game.

    Alameda finishes off its league schedule against Weld Central and Riverdale Ridge before heading into the Colorado 8 League tournament.

    “The attitude has changed,” Gibson said. “I think the guys are finally locked in because they know what we are working for.”

  • All-state football teams for the 2018 season

    The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • Football roundup: Niwot football wins for the first time in two years

    When Niwot football grabbed a 12-7 lead over Fort Lupton at halftime on Friday, it was the first time they’d led in a game since 2016.

    The Cougars weren’t satisfied with that.

    They went on to win 26-13 for the program’s first win since September 2016. The victory snapped a 19-game losing streak.

    Liam Flanagan rushed for three touchdowns and 154 yards on 43 carries for the Cougars. Cory Rathburn led the defense with five tackles.

    Niwot is in its second season under coach Jeremy Lanter.

    The two teams traded scores all night, but it was Montrose who got the final points.

    Montrose’s Emmert Kastendieck scored on a four-yard run to give his team the lead for good with 41.2 seconds to play, according to the Durango Herald.

    Chris Eckerman had 220 yards and two touchdowns for Montrose, per the paper.

    The game was delayed in the third quarter due a lightning in the area.

    6-man: (3) Kit Carson 50, (5) Arickaree/Woodlin 8

    Kit Carson controlled the game from start to finish in moving to 2-0 this season.

    “We ran the ball really well,” coach Curt Connelley told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Our special teams really got us on the board quickly.”

    Joe Bryan returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and his brother, Chris Bryan, returned a punt for a score.

    8-man: Fowler 28, (4) Akron 20

    Fowler knocked off the previously-unbeaten Rams with a late score. The Grizzlies recovered a kickoff after a fortunate bounce to set up the touchdown.

    “It was a lot of smashmouth football. Akron had a couple of big plays on us. They did a great job defensively,” coach Mark Van Sickle told the Scoreboard Show. “We were three- to four-yards and a cloud of dust. It was great to get back to what I think Fowler football is.”

    • Ponderosa got a huge win by upsetting No. 3 Windsor in 4A, 17-13. Nick Hoff and Ethan Waite each rushed for a touchdown.
    • In 5A, No. 1 Cherry Creek cruised to a 3-0 start with a 35-8 win over No. 10 Mullen. A photo gallery of the game is available here.
    • Hinkley is off to its first 2-0 start since 2014 following a 7-0 win over Gateway. The Thunderbirds have opened the season with consecutive shutouts.
    • Pagosa Springs knocked off 1A No. 3 Centauri 31-12.
    • Smoky Hill is now 3-0 for the first time since 2007. The Buffs beat Northglenn 21-6.
    • Quite the stat line for Bryson Long of No. 6 Peetz in 6-man: He rushed for 270 yards and had five touchdowns in a 67-22 win over No. 9 Fleming.
    • It’s always a big rivalry game, and even though they’re now in different classes, this matchup was no different as 1A No. 1 Strasburg beat 2A No. 8 Bennett 32-8.
    • In a game that featured six lead changes, 4A No. 4 Chatfield held off Brighton 39-30.
    • Heritage held off a late Arapahoe drive to win the Milk Jug.
    • In 8-man, No. 4 Prairie beat No. 10 Briggsdale 56-40. “We had a little bit more offensively efficiency. Our offense clicked a lot more tonight,” coach Justin Kerns told the Scoreboard Show of the difference from his team’s first game to its second. Photos from the game are here.
    • 5A Castle View won a wild back-and-forth game on the final play of the game against Wasatch (Utah), 36-35. The Sabercats are now 2-1 under Todd Casebier in his first year — doubling their win total from last season.
    • Evergreen blocked a last-second field goal to upset Mead.
    • Cheyenne Mountain survived a lady bug infestation to rally and beat Sand Creek 21-20.
    • Denver North QB Erik Flores threw for 370 yards and five touchdowns in his team’s 56-40 win over Englewood. Four of those TDs went to Keon Brickens.
    • In 5A, Highlands Ranch beat Regis Jesuit in overtime, 20-17.
    • Eagle Valley snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 57-12 victory against Alameda.
    • 2A No. 7 Basalt cruised to a 47-6 win over Battle Mountain. “The offensive line really played well tonight,” coach Carl Frerichs told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 8-man No. 1 Sedgwick County has now won 25 games in a row after beating Gilpin County 60-0.
    • In their first game playing under new lights, Byers beat Front Range Christian 72-38 in 8-man.
    • Cotopaxi QB Frank Ogden threw for four TDs in his team’s 48-6 win over La Veta.
    • Donovan Garvin grabbed three receiving scores as Berthoud beat Skyview 45-7.
    • 6-man No. 6 Flagler/Hi-Plains rushed for six touchdowns as a team in a 59-6 win over Edison.
    • Ho-hum, another three rushing scores for Erie star Noah Roper, these coming in a 43-16 win over rival Frederick. He also passed for a touchdown.

  • Mike Campbell, former Arapahoe coach, takes football job at Englewood

    Mike Campbell led Arapahoe’s football program for 15 seasons. Now, he is headed to Englewood.

    Campbell announced his resignation from Arapahoe earlier this month, and was introduced as the Pirates coach on Wednesday.

    “It’s awesome. I’m looking forward to it,” Campbell said on Wednesday evening after he was introduced. “I’m going to go after it the same way I have always gone after football: with everything I have, and do right by the kids, and try to put a competitive program on the field.”

    Campbell led Arapahoe from 2003-17. He started there as an assistant in 1996.

    “Finishing up 15 years as a head coach at Arapahoe, you kind of start looking at goals for the next five years,” Campbell said. “It just started really resonating with me that maybe my time was up there, and it was time to do something different.”

    Campbell focused in on a small-school environment. He found it at Englewood, which has an enrollment of 547 competes in Class 2A.

    “There’s just something about it,” Campbell said. “You go to these small towns, and you go in, they’ve got their own stadium, they got the mascot on the 50-yard-line, and everybody comes from the neighborhood and walks to the game.

    “It’s just something I always wanted to do with my life,” he added. “I have a lot of buddies that I played college football with that are in smaller towns in Washington and Oregon, and they just love it. You’re here in Denver, but you’re also in a small town. It just had that feel. I wanted to try something different.”

    Another draw for Campbell was the fact that Englewood has recently renovated all of its athletic facilities, as well as a supportive administration.

    “When you talk facilities,” he said, “they’re second to none.”

    At Englewood, he will take over a program that hasn’t had a winning season since 2010. The Pirates are coming off of consecutive 4-5 seasons.

    Campbell, one of the top coaches in the state, should be up to the challenge. He led Arapahoe to three 10-win seasons since 2004, and had a 90-68 record at the 5A program.

    “We had a really, really deep candidate pool,” Englewood athletic director Nate Smith said. “When the committee got together and we interviewed people, obviously Mike’s track record does not need any additions to it — he’s got a strong track record — but what impressed the committee the most was a strong commitment to academic-based athletics, and really, his thoughts about supporting the athletes and building relationships with them and just helping them be the best people they can be.

    “It really came through that he really cared about his athletes.”

  • All-state football teams for the 2017 season

    The 2017 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.
