  • Volleyball preview: Fairview pursuing first state championship

In one whirlwind day last November, Fairview’s volleyball team ran the gamut of emotions.

The Knights endured one of the longest days possible at the Class 5A state tournament at the Denver Coliseum, playing a total of 13 sets through three matches and one tiebreaker.

Along the way Fairview advanced to its first-ever 5A state title game before falling in three sets to Cherokee Trail. Whether disappointment or exhaustion was more prevalent at the end of the night depends on whom you ask.

“We played a lot of vigorous matches,” said setter Audrey Cheng, a first-team all-state selection as a junior. “We had to work really hard for every point against some of the best teams we had played all season. Playing those matches and having to play extra sets because of tiebreakers put a burden on us.”

It was a difficult lesson for Fairview to learn, but one that coach Kelsey Spencer made certain her team understood throughout the offseason. A slow start that saw the team drop four of its first seven matches forced the Knights to make up ground the rest of the way, and likely cost them a chance to host a regional tournament and earn a higher seed at state.

“I think we learned a lot from last season because we did make it a long journey to get to that game,” said Spencer, whose team enters 2016 ranked second in 5A in the CHSAANow.com preseason poll. “We definitely made that journey as hard as it possibly could have been.”

That’s something Fairview is hoping to avoid this season. Cheng returns, along with twin sisters Caroline and Christine Schmiedeler, but the Knights will have to replace three starters.

“I think that all the seniors will come out with fire under out belts,” Christine Schmiedeler said. “I think we’re all very excited because this is our senior year and we do want to leave our mark and be the first Fairview team to win state.”

Also back for Fairview are middle blocker Meredith Pearl, outside hitter Haley Kilday and defensive specialist Taeko Chase.

Cheng established herself as one of the state’s top setters a year ago, averaging 7.8 assists a set, and finished second on the team in digs. Spencer said she did a great job spreading out the offense to create single-block situations.

“I love it,” she said. “I love my job, being able to touch the ball every single play and being able to control the offense and tell my hitters where they’re hitting.”

Caroline Schmiedeler led the Knights in kills last fall with 248 and was third in digs. Christine was second in kills (170) and had a team-high 31 aces.

This will be the sisters’ final opportunity to capture a state title together.

“Honestly it’s been one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. It’s been so much fun, playing on the team with her,” Christine said.  “She motivates me so much and I hope I do the same for her. I think both of us kind of complement each other in the best sort of way.”

Spencer called the last few years a building process that included getting to state in 2014. The second-year coach said the players “got kind of addicted to making history” and that she believes this year will be a continuation of that.

“The girls kind of tasted what it’s like to be in that (title) game,” she said. “They know how close we were and how bad they wanted it. I think that’s going to motivate us throughout the season.”

Rock Canyon enters the fall as the top-ranked team in 5A after reaching the state semifinals in 2015. Chatfield is third, followed by Denver East – another semifinalist – and Cherokee Trail. The Cougars graduated four seniors, including player of the year Shannon Webb, but return plenty of talent from a 25-win team.

In 4A, defending champion Cheyenne Mountain is ranked first, followed by 2013 and 2014 champion Lewis-Palmer. Evergreen, Ponderosa and Montrose round out the top five.

Eaton has won three consecutive titles and enters 2016 ranked first again in 3A. The Reds graduated a pair of first-team all-state picks, but middle blocker Tarynn Sieg and setter Chelsey Lockey return.

Valley and University are just behind Eaton in the rankings.

Resurrection Christian, which won 2A titles in 2013-14 and was the runner-up a year ago, moves up to 3A this season. Defending champion Yuma is ranked first in 2A, followed by Paonia and Lyons.

Fleming and Prairie are the top-ranked teams in 1A. Defending champion Otis is seventh, and runner-up Idalia is eighth.

After a wild finish at the 2015 state volleyball tournament, it looks like the fun is going to continue in 2016.

Three defending champions sit at No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings while two other squads are coming into the year with heavy expectations being placed on their shoulders.

After cruising through pool play only to fall in the semifinals, Rock Canyon comes in at No. 1 in the Class 5A volleyball rankings to start the year.

The Jaguars lost two seniors from last year’s team, but outside hitter Keeley Davis and libero Kendall Hanak both return.

Defending state champion, Cherokee Trail comes in at No. 5 to start the year with Fairview, Chatfield and Denver East filling the spots in between.

After being the first team in Colorado to take down two-time defending champion, Lewis-Palmer, Cheyenne Mountain claims the top spot in the 4A rankings. The Indians received 12 of 13 first place votes as the Rangers took the other one. That helped them take the No. 2 spot behind their league rivals.

Evergreen and Ponderosa take the next two spots in the poll after each team advanced to last year’s semifinals.

At No. 10, Pueblo West comes in as the only ranked 4A team that did not make last year’s state tournament.

    Eaton volleyball team
Eaton leads the 3A poll. (Matt Daniels/MattDanPhoto.com)

In 3A, someone is going to have to knock off Eaton before anyone will be convinced the Reds should not be the No. 1 team in the state.

Eaton has rattled off three straight state titles and have not lost a match since Sept. 14, 2014. The No. 1 ranking is a clear message to the 3A field: to be the champ, you have to beat the champ.

The 3A rankings are also filled with a lot of familiar names over the last few seasons. Valley (No. 2), University (No. 3), Colorado Springs Christian (No. 4), Platte Valley (No. 6) and Manitou Springs (No. 8) all carried over success from last season into this year’s rankings.

After beating Resurrection Christian (a 3A team from here on out) in last year’s state title match, Yuma comes in as the top team in the 2A rankings.

The Indians have played for the 2A title for the last two seasons and by taking six of 11 first place votes, they come in as a favorite to advance to the title match for the third-straight year.

With Resurrection Christian now out of 2A, Paonia (No. 2) and Lyons (No. 3) now become the most likely to contend with Yuma for the 2A title.

At No. 10, Byers is the only ranked team in 2A that did not make last year’s state tournament.

After making the semifinals but failing to advance to the title match, Fleming comes in as the No. 1 team in 1A.

Defending champion Otis will come in slightly under the radar to start this year, sitting at No. 7, with state runner-up Idalia sitting right behind the Bulldogs at No. 8.

Briggsdale (No. 5) and Caliche (No. 9) are the two teams ranked in the preseason that did not make last year’s state tournament.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

The 2015-16 all-state girls basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a week-long vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

  • Defensive pressure lifts Idalia to 1A girls basketball title

LOVELAND — It’s never easier, which is why the second one is just as sweet.

The Idalia girls caused pressure all night in Saturday’s Class 1A state championship game. That pressure paid off for the Wolves as they defeated Briggsdale 49-33 to claim their second consecutive state title.

“Yes, definitely,” Reagan Shaffer said of the second title being as satisfying as last year’s.

Briggsdale started slow but broke out of a cold-shooting slump, scoring three baskets in a two-minute span to cut its deficit to 17-12.

Idalia answered with three baskets to close out the first half, leading 23-12 at intermission.

The Falcons’ biggest problem was securing the ball as they committed 13 turnovers in the first half.

Idalia primarily used the senior combination of Shaffer and Susana Herrera, using give-and-goes and cuts to the basket to take it inside all evening.

Herrera in particular called for the ball down the stretch, scoring eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter.

“It’s all hard work,” Herrera said.

“She wanted the ball,” Idalia coach Cory Zion noted.

Briggsdale cut its deficit to nine in the fourth quarter but the Wolves held a double-digit lead through the final six minutes.

In addition to Shaffer and Herrera, Idalia got clutch shooting from Alex Weyerman in the fourth. A pair of baskets along the baseline gave her a team-high 16 points.

“She’s got ice water in her veins,” Zion said.

More importantly, Zion noted, she did an effective job defensively against Briggsdale guard Darian Hale.

“She’s a good guard,” Zion said in crediting Hale, who finished with 13 points.

Shaffer, for her part, finished with nine points but did a yeoman’s job on the boards with 13 rebounds.

Even though Idalia was the tournament’s fourth seed, the team knew what to do once it got there.

“You come to state, it’s do or die,” Shaffer said.

Zion noted his team graduates four seniors, but he’s got faith in the underclassmen.

“Our freshmen, sophomores and juniors go against the best team in the state the past two years,” Zion said as he looks forward to next season.

Sangre de Cristo took third place with a 54-48 victory over South Baca. Jenna McKinley scored 19 points and Karleigh Cooley 18 for the Thunderbirds.

Kit Carson edged Heritage Christian 42-39 to take the consolation trophy.

  • 1A girls basketball Final 4 roundup: Briggsdale advances to championship game

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

LOVELAND — The Sangre de Cristo girls basketball program, around 30 years after a historic run of three state championship game appearances in a row, could have reached back-to-back state finals with a victory over Briggsdale in the Final 4 at the Budweiser Events Center.

Two-time champions (1984, 1985), the ThunderBirds (No. 2 seed) could have also stayed undefeated with a 25-0 record this season.

Instead, Briggsdale (23-3) made the clutch plays down the stretch and pulled away for a monumental 50-44 1A semifinals victory over the Thunderbirds. Briggsdale (No. 6) will be appearing in their second-ever girls basketball state championship game. They lost to Eads in the 1A finals in 2008.

In clipping the Thunderbirds’ wings in the second half, the Falcons were patient offensively, draining clock and forcing Sangre to make defensive mistakes.

Senior guard Darian Hale was a quarterback on the court, making sound decisions on choosing when to attack and when to distribute. More than anything, she put the ball in the hoop with 26 points. Another fourth-year guard, Leilani Carrasco, had 13 points for Briggsdale as well.

For a team that actually placed third in their district tournament, the Falcons have flown into their second state finals as a bit of a Cinderella story.

“I always believed in them,” Briggsdale coach Colin Nicklas said. “I knew we were better than third in the district and I thought we could hang with anybody in the state. We knew we were good enough. I’m so proud of these girls on how far they’ve come. We were on the ropes.”

Briggsdale, which also overcame a 25-18 halftime deficit, including a 3-of-21 shooting performance, built a 41-33 lead with 2:51 to go. Clutch shooting from the charity stripe preserved the lead. Also, only three Thunderbirds scored in the game as only Brooke Slane (24 points), Karleigh Cooley (16) and Jenna McKinley (4) got into the box score.

“I think it was mainly experience,” Hale said of sealing the win in style. “We’ve all played together at least one whole year. We know how to work well together.”

Briggsdale’s poise and backcourt leadership ultimately led to the lead late in the third, a lead they never gave up.

“We believed in ourselves from the very beginning. We wanted to play in the state championship.”

    (4) Idalia 46 (8) South Baca 37

Idalia (20-2) stayed alive in their bid for back-to-back 1A state championships as senior guard Susana Herrera, after scoring 13 points in the quarterfinals, poured in 17 in the semifinals. The Wolves beat Sangre de Cristo 59-50 in the state finals last season in their first-ever title game.

Senior guard Shaelynn Wood, an offensive dynamo, tallied 19 points in the defeat for South Baca.

LOVELAND — The girls basketball program at South Baca has come a long ways in recent years.

After posting a 7-32 record during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Patriots went 35-10 the previous two seasons, but lost by three points apiece to Kit Carson and Eads in their regional tournaments.

On Thursday, at the Class 1A state tournament at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, the eighth-seeded Patriots (20-4) upset the top-seeded and previously undefeated Kit Carson Wildcats 60-47 in the Great 8. A season ago, Flagler took down No. 1 seed Norwood in the state quarterfinals as well.

A cooperative program comprised of Campo, Vilas and Pritchett, South Baca, with no girls taller than 5-foot-10, wore down a bigger Kit Carson (22-1) team by pushing the pace in the second half and outscoring the Wildcats 18-3 in the third and 34-17 after the break.

“That’s the way we like to play,” third-year South Baca coach Tom Jacobs said. “We like to play pressure defense and get up and down the floor. I think Kit Carson’s fatigue finally got to them a little bit there.”

South Baca also rode the hot hand of 1A’s leading scorer, Shae Wood (20.6 points per game), who poured in a game-high 25 points, including 18 in the first half.

“It’s no secret to anybody. We go to Shae Wood,” Jacobs said. “When everyone else is having a bad game, Shae Wood seems to carry us through those rough spots. Once we started getting on the boards in the second half and getting on the break, we just used our athletic ability and kind of took over the game. We had a team defensive effort.”

Wood, fellow senior guard Montana Yocam (17 points) and junior forward Bree-Ann Carwin (12), the team’s offensive leaders throughout the season, carried South Baca to their first-ever Final 4 appearance in girls basketball.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Wood said. “We really worked hard all season. Our goal was to get to state and we finally did it this year. We just had to keep ourselves focused.”

Micayla Isenbart, Kit Carson’s 6-foot-2 versatile sophomore guard, finished the game with 23 points, but no one else for the Wildcats scored more than eight.

South Baca advances to Friday’s semifinals at Budweiser Events Center at 4 p.m. against Idalia.

    (4) Idalia 52 (5) Norwood 33

The Wolves rode a 30-8 halftime lead to a blowout victory in the state quarterfinals. They also improved to 19-2 on the season as Susana Herarra (13 points), Jennay Terrel (11) and Reagan Shaffer (10) led the way in the scoring department.

Idalia will be defending their 2015 state championship against South Baca at 4 p.m. on Friday.

    (6) Briggsdale 38 (3) Heritage Christian 29

The Falcons will be making their second semifinals appearance in the last three seasons after holding off Heritage Christian and improving to 22-3. Briggsdale also reached the state championship in 2008, losing to Eads.

On Thursday, Darian Hale (12 points), Brianne Schneider (10) and Jodel Erickson (10) stepped up in a major way. Briggsdale faces Sangre de Cristo at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.

    (2) Sangre de Cristo 50 (7) Genoa-Hugo 48

The Thunderbirds stayed undefeated at 24-0 as senior Brooke Slane had a game-high 21 points. Fellow seniors Karleigh Cooley (14 points) and Jenna McKinley (11) had nice efforts for Sangre as well.

Sangre de Cristo will go against Briggsdale.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Pueblo South jumps into 4A poll at No. 6

The South Central League already had plenty of representation in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings. But Pueblo South was apparently feeling left out.

The Colts stormed their way into the 4A poll, landing at No. 6. They were unranked a week ago. They join league foes Pueblo West and Pueblo East, who have been fixtures in the poll all season.

Sand Creek still has a strong grip on the No. 1 spot in the class as they received 11 of 14 votes this weeks.

The top spot in 5A continues to be held by Highlands Ranch as the Falcons show no desire to relinquish their hold as the regular season nears its end.

Pine Creek remains in the top 10 despite a down-to-the-wire loss to Rampart on Friday.

No new teams were able to play their way into the 5A poll.

Manitou Springs couldn’t overtake Pagosa Springs for the top spot in the 3A poll, despite an impressive blowout win over No. 4 St. Mary’s last week.

After falling out of the rankings last week, La Junta rejoins the ranks at No. 10.

Yuma is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 2A, a welcome sight as they inch closer to the start of the playoffs.

Swink was able to give the 2A poll a fresh face as the Lions come in at No. 10.

Kit Carson hangs on to the No. 1 spot that they took over last week in 1A. While the order was somewhat different, the 10 teams in last week’s 1A poll remain the same.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Kit Carson new No. 1 in 1A

By the slimmest of margins, Kit Carson is the new No. 1 team in the Class 1A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

The Wildcats registered 95 points, only one point better than former No. 1 Sangre De Cristo, which falls to No. 2.

Kim jumped from No. 10 to No. 7 this week, but there were no new teams added to the 1A poll.

Highlands Ranch maintains the No. 1 spot in the 5A rankings, taking 13 of 15 first-place votes. In fact, the top seven teams in the 5A poll maintained their position from last week.

Rocky Mountain did join the rankings, landing at No. 10.

The 4A rankings also saw few changes as Sand Creek is still the top team with Mesa Ridge still nipping at the Scorpions’ heels.

The Western Slope got some love from the votes as Montrose breaks into the 4A poll, coming in at No. 10.

The two remaining unbeaten teams in 3A continue to sit atop their rankings. Pages Springs and Manitou Springs remain entrenched at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. St. Mary’s moved up to No. 4 and have a looming showdown with Manitou on Tuesday.

Liberty Common joins the 3A poll at No. 10.

No new teams were added to the 2A poll, which still has Yuma as the No. 1 overall team.

Kiowa did make a two-spot jump from last week, coming in at No. 7.
