  • All-state football teams for the 2018 season

    The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • Kent Denver’s Jackson Klutznick wins 3A boys golf title; Aspen claims team championship

    BOULDER — Jackson Klutznick had one big focus during Tuesday’s final round at the Class 3A boys golf state championships.

    The Kent Denver senior, who was playing in the lead group and had put himself in position to win the tournament, wanted to have fun. In fact, he didn’t even check the leaderboard until the 16th hole.

    By that time, Klutznick was four shots in the lead, well on his way to winning the individual championship.

    “I just prepared myself to play golf,” Klutznick said. “In the past, I’ve really gotten in my own way, started thinking about other people and what they’re going to shoot, kinda trying to predict it. I just decided I’m gonna play golf today.

    “The kids I was playing with were awesome,” he added. “I’m assumed they were the ones that are leading, so I was just kind of going in relation to them, and just tried to have fun. I figured at the end of the day, just go out and enjoy it.”

    Well, mission accomplished.

    Klutznick, who finished fourth a season ago, broke away from a tight leaderboard to win the 3A title by three strokes at 1-under. He becomes the sixth individual champion from Kent Denver.

    Aspen’s Jack Hughes (2-over) was second. Peak to Peak’s Davis Long, last season’s champion, finished third at 3-over. Aspen’s Jack Pevny and Prospect Ridge Academy’s Walker Franklin tied for fourth at 4-over.

    Hughes, a CU commit, and Pevny led an impressive Aspen contingent which captured the team title, the program’s first. The Skiers, who entered with a one-stroke lead after the first day, had a runaway performance on the second day of the tournament to win.

    They were 5-under as a team at one point on Tuesday, and wound up winning by nine strokes, finishing at 14-over. Kent Denver (+23) was second.

    “These boys have been outstanding players since the time they were freshmen,” said Aspen coach Mary Woulfe. “They knew this was in their blood, and they just didn’t know when it was going to happen.”

    Dawson Holmes (+8) anchored the team-score for Aspen, and Dominic Lanese IV shot 23-over.

    “We were a team of six, not a team of four,” Woulfe. “We had two outstanding players that didn’t make it who would’ve been on that leaderboard. … They’re just smart players, they make good decisions all the way around the course.”

    Eaton’s Peter Grossenbacher entered the day with a two-stroke lead, having shot 5-under on the first day. Klutznick entered in second at 3-under, and Pevny was third at 2-under.

    The leaderboard tightened up almost immediately on the second day. A double-bogey from Grossenbacher on the second hole, along with a birdie from Pevny and a par from Klutznick, tied the trio at the top.

    They spent the rest of the day in various positions of the lead, with Pevny each Klutznick each grabbing the individual lead at one point. By the time the lead group reached the ninth hole, there was a five-way tie atop the top: Pevny, Klutznick, Grossenbacher, Franklin and Telluride’s Carlo Pine all sat at even.

    Thru 11 holes, Klutznick and Pevny were tied with Franklin (who had finished 12) at even. Klutznick then birdied his 12th hole to take a one-stroke lead. He held the lead from there on out, as Pevny, Grossenbacher and Franklin dropped strokes.

    “I figured I was somewhere at the top, but there are so many great players, I didn’t want to assume,” Klutznick said.

    Klutznick added another birdie on 16, and suddenly he led by four strokes. He made par on 17 and bogey on 18 to seal his championship.

    “He rose to the occasion,” Woulfe said of Klutznick. “To see him win, and the way he did it, with such grace coming down the stretch, was great.”

  • Eaton’s Peter Grossenbacher leads 3A boys golf state tournament after Day 1

    BOULDER — On a brisk Monday afternoon at the beautiful Boulder Country Club, Eaton senior Peter Grossenbacher found himself in the lead of the Class 3A boys golf state tournament.

    Shooting 5-under on the tournament’s first day, Grossenbacher’s two-shot lead over Kent Denver senior Jackson Klutznick was immensely earned. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Grossenbacher, who bogeyed two of his first three holes, and was 1-over through the front nine.

    His back nine score of 29 (6-under) included an eagle on the 12th hole to spark a unbelievable surge.

    “Today was a total blast,” Grossenbacher said. “On 12 I took a very aggressive line, hit a pitching wedge close and made eagle. After that eagle, my mom told me I was in the lead.”

    The top of the leaderboard is tight. Aspen junior Jack Pevny (2-under) and Telluride senior Carlo Pine (even) find themselves right in the thick of things. Prospect Ridge junior Walker Franklin is in fifth at 1-over.

    “It’s very exciting to be in it,” Pevny said. “It just shows you all of your hard work paying off. Definitely have grinded for the last two weeks to get ready for this. I think I need to play the same way I did today, tomorrow. I made some mistakes on the greens, but sticking to the game-plan by hitting the middle of the green is a focus and I’ll just go from there.”

    Pevny’s team, Aspen, currently leads the team category of the tournament at 4-over par. Kent Denver follows at 5-over as third place for now is Holy Family at 15-over.

    Telluride has just one player at state, but after a consistent afternoon, Pine finds himself with a chance as Day 2 approaches.

    “It was a pretty solid day,” Pine said. “My wedge game was a little off, but my putting kept things together, so hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to get the wedges a little closer and keep the putting and be under par.”

    Pine’s lead held up at 1-under for most of the afternoon until Grossenbacher claimed the lead at 2-under following his eagle.

    The leader’s golf partner, Klutznick kept pressure on, especially late in the round. With the two golfers at the top of the leaderboard, Tuesday’s final round is likely to bring more competitiveness between these two, who will be grouped together once again.

    “We started feeding off of each other’s birdies and before I knew it, I was 5-under with two to play,” Grossenbacher said. “He also eagled 12, so after we both made those eagles, I told him I might have a skin there. I wasn’t very happy when I saw him make a putt, but it was fun to see the motivation we put on each other. He’s a very awesome sportsman.”

    What was well known by all golfers leaving Monday afternoon: there is still another day.

    “At the end of the day, whoever plays better tomorrow is what it all comes down to,” Klutznick said. “He (Grossenbacher) played great today, and if he plays like that again, it will be hard to do anything, but I’m going to try and keep it going.”

    After accomplishing a tournament round career-low by four shots, Grossenbacher looks to become the first individual from Eaton to win the state boys golf championship, and he’s looking forward to the opportunity.

    “It would mean the world to me to pull it out tomorrow,” he said. “I have put just so much preparation into this. Visualizing it even since freshman year when I’m practicing chipping and putting thinking, “I need to get this this down for state,’ so I’ve been waiting for this moment.”

  • Football roundup: No. 6 Burlington beats No. 5 Wray in 1A

    Class 1A’s North Central league features four teams ranked in this week’s top-10. So Friday’s league matchup between No. 5 Wray and No. 6 Burlington was of a little extra importance.

    Burlington came away with an important 19-8 win over Wray, thanks in part to two touchdown passes from Braden Witzel, and some stout defense.

    “It is a big win for us,” Burlington coach Glynn Higgs told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “I was really proud of our defense. Two or three times, they were down inside the 20. And we were able to keep them from putting points on the board. I was just really proud of the kids.”

    Taylor Scott opened the scoring for Burlington with a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. After a Wray safety, Witzel threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Burton with 4:42 left in the second.

    The score remained that way until late in the fourth quarter. That’s when Wray cut it to 12-8 with 5:33 following an interception return for a touchdown.

    Witzel and Burton then hooked up again for a second time, this one from 30 yards with 35 seconds left, to account for the final margin.

    With the win, Burlington is now 1-0 in conference play — along with No. 1 Limon and No. 7 Holyoke, who also won on Friday night.

    3A: Niwot 20, Eagle Valley 14

    Niwot football is now 3-2 after a 20-14 win over Eagle Valley. The Cougars ended a 19-game losing streak earlier in the year.

    “Our kids have worked really, really hard, and it’s almost overwhelming at times for what they’ve sacrificed to try to get to this point,” coach Jeremy Lanter told the Scoreboard Show. “The rotating coaches they’ve had in that program, it’s nice to have some consistency and have some kids buy into that consistency.”

    On Friday, Julian Molina rushed for two touchdowns for the Cougars, and Eric Ruiz also scored on the ground.

    This is just the second time since 2008 that the team has won three games in a season.

    “It is so important,” Lanter said of winning games. “Especially when you’re trying everything you can to keep kids motivated and inspired when they know that they’re looking at a 19-game losing streak. Especially for them to be chipping away at that, and they continue to pick up the hammer and pound the stone, and try to give themselves the best opportunity. But winning helps. Winning doesn’t fix everything, but it certainly does help.”

  • Fossil Ridge’s Dillon Stewart shoots a 63 as five more golf regionals complete play

    Dillon Stewart stole the show on the second day of boys golf regionals around the state on Tuesday.

    The Fossil Ridge senior, who finished second at the Class 5A state state championship last season, shot a 9-under 63 to win the Class 5A Northern Regional, held at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora.

    His performance helped the Sabercats win the regional by 11 strokes, as they finished at 6-under as a team. Lakewood (+5) was second.

    Stewart wasn’t the only one under par at that regional, though: Lakewood’s Ryan Liao and Cherokee Trail’s Beam Boonta each were 4-under, and Stewart’s Fossil Ridge teammate Owen Cornmesser was 1-under.

    Elsewhere, in 4A Region 4, Montrose teammates Jordan Jennings and Micah Stangebye battled for the individual regional crown after both finished at 3-under through their round. Stangebye won in a seven-hole playoff.

    Montrose, the defending 4A champions, also won the region at 2-under. Mullen was second at 1-over.

    In the loaded 3A Region 2, Holy Family’s Jacob Mason won the event by finishing at 4-under, two strokes ahead of defending 3A champion Davis Long of Peak to Peak.

    “When you are trying to qualify for something as big as the state championship, its always in the back of your mind that you could be close to the cutline,” Mason told HFAthletics.com. “There is always that chance of putting more pressure on yourself, but I like the pressure and I think our team lived up to it today.”

    Prospect Ridge Academy’s Walker Franklin, last year’s runner-up, finished in a tie for third with Kent Denver’s Jackson Klutznick at 1-under. Klutznick finished in a tie for fourth at state last season.

    Kent Denver, last year’s runner-up as a team, won the event. Holy Family placed second. Peak to Peak, the defending champions who beat Kent in a playoff last season, was third.

    At 3A Region 1, La Junta’s Cody Schrock was the individual champion at 1-under. Lutheran’s Westin Pals (+1) was second.

    Colorado Academy won the region by shooting 16-over. La Junta (+20) was second.

    In 4A Region 1, Cornado’s Andrew Merz finished first at 6-over. Discovery Canyon’s Scott Ieveque was second at 9-over.

    Coronado (+39) also won the team championship. Lewis-Palmer (+41) was second.

    The 2018 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

    Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.
