  • 1A girls hoops Final 4 roundup: Fleming, Kit Carson to play for championship

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

GREELEY — The Heritage Christian girls basketball team boasts a 23-2 record.

The two losses? Both came against Fleming, a scrappy group with ample amounts of championship experience from winning the Class 1A volleyball state crown in the fall. A 39-37 1A girls basketball semifinals sneak-by pushed the Wildcats into a volleyball finals rematch against undefeated Kit Carson.

“I’ve been to two state championships in volleyball, but have never been to one in basketball,” junior forward Alli Keisel said. “Kit Carson is such a good team and I’m so glad we get to play them again.”

After pulling through against Heritage Christian 67-55 in the District 4 championship game on February 25, the Eagles came out with plenty of momentum in round two. The offensive prowess of senior Sarah McGinley (20.6 points per game, 6.4 assists, 9.8 rebounds, 3.8 steals, 1.9 blocks) was evident. She started the game with 12 of her team’s 14 points as Heritage Christian took a two-point lead after the first quarter.

Then, Fleming tied it at 20 at halftime. Point guard Kalyn Serrato breathed life into her team throughout, as she does so often in games, with two three-pointers in the opening quarter and 11 points in the first half.

The Wildcats held a slim 29-28 lead after three frames. Defensive pressure intensified for Fleming and McGinley only scored five points after the first quarter, a major reason why the Wildcats were able to advance to the title game.

With two and a half minutes remaining, Serrato had a basket to give Fleming a 36-34 lead. McGinley made a deuce at the line to tie the game with 1:27 left. A well-executed inbounds play gave Shaylee Johnson a layup for Fleming with 41 seconds left. Jenn Stellingwerf (nine points) was fouled with 2.3 seconds left and made one of two free throws to pull the Eagles within 38-37.

A foul by Heritage Christian sent Keisel to the line and she made one and missed one. Keisel stole the full-court inbounds and Heritage Christian was knocked out of their first-ever Final 4 in girls basketball.

Serrato led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Keisel finished with eight.

Fleming will be appearing in their fifth girls basketball title game. They lost the A-II final to Ridgway in 1982 and the 1983 final to Norwood, but beat Ridgway in 1981 to claim the A-II crown. They also reached the final game in 1A in 2011, a narrow 40-37 loss to Simla.

Title No. 2 is on the line for Fleming against Kit Carson at 4 p.m. at Budweiser Events Center in Loveland on Saturday. The Wildcats (24-1) lost to Kit Carson 55-44 on February 4, but are confident they can avenge their only loss of the season.

“What killed us against them was our backside defense, but mostly we just need to play our game,” Keisel said.

Heritage Christian, led by Colorado Christian University commit McGinley and her 17 points, will face South Baca in the third-place game at noon.

    (1) Kit Carson 59, (4) South Baca 37

For the second consecutive season, Kit Carson girls basketball entered the Class 1A state tournament as a prohibitive favorite to claim the crown with an unblemished record.

In 2016, the Wildcats’ perfect season was spoiled by eighth-seeded South Baca in the Great 8. Again the top seed, Kit Carson was facing upset-minded South Baca in the semifinals on Friday at the University of Northern Colorado’s Bank of Colorado Arena.

This time, Kit Carson rode a 10-0 opening run all the way to a 59-37 victory over the Patriots to advance to their first state championship game in girls hoops.

The Wildcats are brimming with skilled underclassmen — seven of 10 players on the roster are sophomores or freshmen — and all four leading scorers from 2016 returned. On top of that, Kit has six players standing between five-foot-ten and six-foot-two, an unusually tall team in 1A.

While Kit Carson has a bevy of weapons, which includes the Isenbart sister trio of Micayla, Reyna and Olivia (all average nine points per game), one Wildcat topped the rest Friday as 6-foot sophomore Tess Hornung was a matchup nightmare.

Proving her worth as a top contender for 1A player of the year honors, Hornung finished with 25 points. Reyna Isenbart chipped in 12 as the tandem controlled the inside.

“We definitely have a really big team,” Hornung, averaging 14.2 points per game, said. “I know it intimidates some other teams.”

Kit Carson (24-0) has reached the state tournament four seasons in succession. They have a tremendous 72-2 record in the past three years combined. The school has claimed three state championships, one in volleyball and two in boys basketball.

History will be on the line for the girls hoops program on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they take on Fleming.

“I love being part of a legacy,” Hornung grinned. “Kit Carson for so long has gotten close. We finally get a chance to do it.”

For South Baca (20-4), senior guard Bree-ann Carwin entered Friday as 1A’s leading scorer (21.9 points per game) but was held in check with only four points. Backcourt mate Brittany Guthrie finished with 17 points with 14 of them coming after the break. The Patriots will face Heritage Christian in the third-place game at noon on Saturday.

  • 1A girls hoops Great 8 roundup: Fleming ends Antonito’s unbeaten season

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

The bright lights and raucous crowds at the University of Northern Colorado’s Bank of Colorado Arena felt familiar to the Fleming girls basketball team.

Fleming won the Class 1A volleyball state championship over Kit Carson at the Denver Coliseum, their sixth title in program history after reaching eight of the past ten championship matches. Junior forward Alli Keisel (20 points) and electric senior guard Kalyn Serrato (19) were key members of the volleyball team that handed Kit their first loss of the fall.

Boosted by their championship experience — Bailey Chintala, Jenna Lengfelder, Morgan Cockroft all play on both teams as well — Fleming (23-1) was poised in the final frame and outscored Antonito 24-10 to pull away after a close contest and reach the 1A girls Final 4 with a 68-57 win. Antonito was undefeated at 23-0 entering the weekend.

“I definitely think that carries over into the next season and we may not be well-tested in the state basketball tournament, but they have played in some big games and the stage didn’t seem to bother them one bit tonight,” said coach Randy Kirkwood, formerly in charge of the boys at Caliche.

With numerous lead changes and quick bursts filled with fastbreaks and 3-point makes, each team had the weapons needed to explode for stretches.

Antonito (No. 6 seed) and Fleming (No. 3) both executed inside and outside as the Trojans’ Erykah Tallman (17 points) was a presence down low and guards Tyanna Sanchez (11) and Brenay Ruybal (10) were effective from the perimeter.

The game was tied at 16 after one as Fleming held a slight three-point advantage, 32-29, at halftime. Antonito whipped the ball around the outside and heated up as an 11-0 Trojan run pushed Antonito to a 49-44 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Spurred by 5-foot-3 Serrato, a wonderful veteran playmaker with six points during a critical stretch midway through the fourth which included four-of-four from the free throw line, Fleming took a tight 56-53 lead with just over four minutes to go.

Antonito got within one with three minutes left, but could never retake the lead. A fifth foul on Tallman took their physical post out of the game with about five minutes remaining and Fleming’s transition offense opened up the late double-digit lead.

“We run a lot,” Serrato said. “We turn the game into a track meet.”

Kirkwood was pleased with the execution and effort of his team in a close victory over a well-coached and gifted Trojan team.

“Antonito is a very good team,” he said. “That was a really good girls basketball game. Our girls rebounded real well in the second half and we hit some big shots when we needed to.”

Fleming will take on Heritage Christian at 7 p.m. in the semifinals on Friday, a team they beat 67-55 in the District 4 tournament on February 25.

    [divider]

    (1) Kit Carson 51, (8) Nucla 31

Kit Carson looked every bit the title contender their seed would indicate. The Wildcats stayed perfect this season at 23-0 with a defense that gave up 15 points through three quarters and allowed Kit to build a 36-point advantage in the fourth.

The Isenbart sister trio of Micayla (nine points), Reyna (14) and Olivia (six), a junior, freshman and sophomore, redeemed the Wildcats one year after a perfect regular season was slightly spoiled with an upset loss to South Baca in the Great 8. Tess Hornung chipped in 13 points for Kit.

Senior guard Taylor Sickels had the hot-hand for Nucla (14-10), scoring 18 of the team’s 31 points. The Mustangs will face Briggsdale at 8:45 a.m. in the consolation bracket Friday.

    [divider]

    (4) South Baca 53, (5) Briggsdale 50 (OT)

The Patriots pushed Briggsdale aside thanks to a 22-point performance by Bree-ann Carwin, an overtime-forcing trifecta by senior Frankie Ormiston and a few clutch free throws in extra time.

1A’s top scorer (21.9 points per game) was the catalyst for South Baca, a team that has now reached the Final Four back-to-back years. The Patriots (20-3), a school that pulls from Campo, Vilas and Pritchett, could reach their first state final if they take out No. 1 Kit Carson on Friday at 4 p.m.

The area does have some hoops tradition as Campo High School, before the area schools collaborated into one, claimed two girls basketball state titles with the most recent coming in 1978.

The Patriots took a 17-11 lead into the second quarter and held a 21-17 margin at the break, but the Falcons found their wings taking a 39-34 lead into the last quarter. A balanced Briggsdale effort, 14 points apiece for Nikki Anderson and Jodel Erickson, to go with 12 by Skyla Miller, was enough to force overtime but not enough to prevail.

Briggsdale (18-6) was the state-runner up to Idalia in 2016.

    [divider]

    (2) Heritage Christian 46, (7) Eads 37

Eads was poised looking to spring an upset and led 16-15 on the big stage after two quarters. But, a 14-6 third frame that went the way of Heritage Christian assured the Eagles a spot in the semifinals.

Joe Packard’s team is a serious threat for the 1A crown, but will have to avenge their only loss of the season to Fleming to reach the final.

Sarah McGinley (12 points), Jenn Stellingwerf (10), Elizabeth Lacey (nine) and Sarah Collins (nine) led the offensive charge for Heritage Christian.

Mariah Smith (15) and Miranda Mitchek (13) played well for Eads in a close loss. Eads (16-9) takes on Antonito in the consolation rounds at 11:45 a.m. on Friday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Sterling new No. 1 in 3A

Sterling (18-0) jumped St. Mary’s in Class 3A to become the new No. 1 in 3A.

Sterling beat then-No. 8 Eaton 49-27 in its only game last week. Eaton fell to No. 10.

The top five teams in 5A stayed the same with Grandview posting a 3-0 record to remain No. 1. The top five went 12-1 overall last week.

In 4A, Pueblo West moved from No. 3 to No. 2 after a 2-0 week. Elsewhere in 4A, Valor Christian received one first place vote despite a No. 9 rank.

Haxtun is on the rise in 2A. The Fightin’ Bulldogs come in at No. 7, up from No. 9 last week.

Kit Carson stayed at No. 1 in 1A, as the top five teams remained the same.

Valor Christian returned to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week after narrowly beating Golden on Wednesday.

The Eagles, now 11-9, are ranked No. 10 this week.

The top three teams in 4A remained the same with No. 1 Pueblo South leading the pack. No. 2 Evergreen avoided an upset against Green Mountain to stay in the hunt.

The biggest mover of the rankings goes to Heritage Christian (16-0) in 1A. The school is up three spots in this week’s poll at No. 2. The Eagles defeated No. 8 Briggsdale to leap in the rankings behind No. 1 Kit Carson.

In 5A, Ralston Valley continued its 17 game win streak to keep pace at No. 3 in the rankings.

5A’s lone shakeup comes with Fossil Ridge and Fairview. Fossil Ridge, ranked No. 10 in last week’s poll, switched spots with Fairview at No. 7.

3A added Faith Christian at No. 10, and Eaton moved up two spots to No. 8.

Paonia stayed at No. 1 in 2A with minor shakeup beneath them.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
