  • Boys golf: Falcon’s Reese Knox ditches the putter as he dives into red numbers

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO WEST — As Falcon’s Reese Knox walked off the ninth green at Desert Hawk golf course, he looked to his dad and complained about his putting.

So on the back nine, he decided to hole shots out rather than putt them. In a two-hole span he hit one fairway, one green in regulation and just a single putt while shaving three strokes of his score. By the time he got to the clubhouse he had carded a 3-under-par 69 to claim the Class 4A Region 1 title.

A big piece of that round came as he chipped in for eagle at the par-5 12th and holed out from a greenside bunker on 13. That stretched helped him fall back to around even where Coronado’s Noah Keller lingered most of the day.

“On the front I was lipping (putts) out a bit,” Knox said. “By the time I got to the back I just decided I was going to play golf and not worry about the score. I started playing and just fell into the moment. I started chipping in and getting some lucky breaks.”

His approach shot from the rough on No. 2 landed inches from the hole for his first birdie of the day, but his ensuing tee shot was out of bounds resulting in a double-bogey. He bogeyed No. 4 before making a birdie on the par-3 fifth and eventually made the turn at 1-over. He played the first six holes on the back at 4-under with a par and a bogey before coasting to three pars in the final three holes.

Pueblo West held off Falcon by three strokes to claim the team regional championship. The Cyclones got solid performances from Toby Sailnas and Noah Wagner at last year’s 4A tournament at the Bridges. They’ll head to the Country Club of Colorado looking to make another run at a state title and coach Dan Sanchez thinks the experience from last year is key.

“In all high school sports, if you’ve been in those pressure situations and you’ve felt the struggle, to me that’s what it’s all about,” Sanchez said.

It was announced last week that the 4A state tournament was moving to the Country Club of Colorado but for several players from all around the state, there is a feeling of excitement when it comes to qualifying for the tournament and getting a chance to play a new venue with new players to compete with.

“Today was fun, I had never really met these guys,” Durango junior Levi Tichi said. “I had played (Eisenhower) once or twice, it was my freshman year regional course. I was happy to hear about the change to the Country Club of Colorado because I’ve been struggling with putting all year.”

Not that the greens at CC of C are a cakewalk, but Eisenhower has proven to be one of the toughest putting courses in all of the front range. Regardless of the venue, the qualifiers from the Desert Hawk regional will get back to work on Tuesday with an eye on competing at state.

    Regionals elsewhere:

St. Mary’s claims team title at 3A Region 2

With two players finishing in the top three, St. Mary’s came away with a regional team title at Murphy Creek. Kent Denver’s Jeffrey Zhou shot 73 to claim medalist honors.

Sterling and Eaton send teams to Dos Rios

Sterling and Eaton each grabbed a pair of top 10 finishers at 3A Region 3 at Boomerang Golf Links. The Tigers won the team title as senior Trey Kuntz finished second overall with a 73. Strasburg’s Jacob Gilbert won the individual title.

Ford tames Country Club of Colorado

Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford was laughing the last time he played the Country Club of Colorado, calling it the “worst ball-striking day of my life.”

The result was much better at regionals. Ford claimed the individual championship at the Country Club of Colorado. Cheyenne Mountain won the team title as Ponderosa took second.

Rock Canyon’s team finishes under par at Raccoon Creek

Nick Fallin led the way with a 65 as Rock Canyon grabbed the individual and team regional titles at Raccoon Creek. Overall, five players shot under par at the tournament.

Ralston Valley’s Gage Messingham led Ralston Valley with a 67 and the Mustangs finished second to get their team to state.

Fossil Ridge edges Pine Creek at Hyland Hills

Lengend’s Ryan Parker claimed the 5A Northern regional title at Hyland Hills with a 71. Pine Creek’s Wesley Erling matched him, but ultimately finished second.

Fossil Ridge claimed the team title by beating out Pine Creek by just two strokes.

  • Softball: Garner leads No. 4 Broomfield in upset win over No. 2 Fossil Ridge

Kenzi Garner had herself an afternoon. While a lot of the lineup struggled to figure out Fossil Ridge pitching, the Broomfield senior put together an overall solid performance and helped the Class 5A No. 4 Eagles get a 2-1 8-inning win over the No. 2 Sabercats on Tuesday.

Garner went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Bryna Kapelke also hit one out for Broomfield but two solo shots were all that was needed against one of the top teams in the state.

Broomfield (12-0 overall, 6-0 Front Range League) scored the first run of the game from one of those home runs in the first inning. Then it turned into a classic pitcher’s duel with neither team relenting a run until the bottom of the sixth when Fossil Ridge got the tying run across the plate.

In perhaps her most important start of the season, Broomfield sophomore Breanna Fiala was everything the Eagles needed her to be in the circle. She surrendered just five hits and struck out eight batters.

The lone Fossil Ridge run that crossed the plate was unearned but it didn’t phase her and she remained steady for the next two innings. The Eagles hit their second home run of the game in the top of the eighth inning and Fiala shut the door on the Sabercats in the bottom of the inning to help the Eagles remain undefeated.

    (4) Lyons 6, (5) Strasburg 3

Brooklyn Enny went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s to help Np. 4 Lyons top No. 5 Strasburg. The Lions held a 6-0 lead through four innings but Strasburg cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth.

But that’d be as close as it would get as Lyons got through the seventh unscathed to improve to 6-2 on the year.

    (1) Eaton 7, (9) Brush 1

Yaritza Puente went 2-for-3 with a home run as top-ranked Eaton continued its impressive 2020 season with a big win over Brush.

Eaton has now won five straight games, including a 11-5 tilt against No. 2 University.

  • A loaded softball schedule saw eight games among top-10 teams

The softball season saw perhaps its most impactful day of the season so far on Tuesday.

A total of eight games pitting ranked teams against one another took place, including a walk-off win and an extra-inning matchup.

    4A: (9) Mead 12, (2) Erie 4

The Mavericks, now 3-0, are off to the best start in program history. Mead advanced to the regional round last season.

    4A: (3) Wheat Ridge 5, (1) Holy Family 3

Elizabeth Uhl threw a complete game, allowing just two earned runs, for the Farmers, who moved to 3-0.

Down 1-0 in the third, Wheat Ridge plated two with a double from Aaliyah Arellano. The next inning, Aliyah Rothstein singled home a run, Lee Quezada drove another in with a sac fly, and Isabella Martinez plated another with a single.

Holy Family got a run back in the fourth, and another in the seventh, but the rally fell short.

Tyler Whitlock went 4-for-4 for Holy Family.

    3A: (2) Eaton 17, (3) Strasburg 16

Eaton got its offense started early with a six-run first inning, and never really looked back in a big win.

The squad also plated one more in the second, seven in the third, and three in the fourth.

Yaritza Puente, a senior, led Eaton with four RBIs as part of a 2-for-3 day, and Sadie Ross, a freshman, drove in three as she went 3-for-4.

Blayke Duncan, Brooke Beacom, Jaymie Woody and Emma Pinkstaff each had two RBIs for Eaton.

    5A: (5) Chatfield 4, (7) Legend 3

Chatfield, now 3-0, walked off for the win in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Avery Rohlman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Chargers, while Madison Shepard and Abigale Washco each also drove in a run.

Pitcher Isabelle DiNapoli threw the complete-game for Chatfield, striking out 10. She didn’t allow an earned run.

Legend’s Kaylyn English went 3-for-4 in the loss.

    5A: (9) Broomfield 5, (6) Rocky Mountain 3

Kenzi Garner led the way for Broomfield in the win.

At the plate, the senior tripled and homered as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. She drove in two runs, and scored three times herself.

In the circle, Garner threw a complete game, striking out nine.

Chloe Eiguren was 3-for-3 for the Eagles, and had an RBI. Claire Comstock also drove in a run.

Hannah Bailey had two RBIs for Rocky Mountain.

    3A: (10) La Junta 11, (7) Limon 10 (9 inn.)

The game saw a ton of offense, and fittingly, the two ranked teams battled to extra innings.

Limon grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first, only to see La Junta tie it in the bottom half.

La Junta eventually grabbed a 9-5 lead after five innings, but Limon cut it to 9-7 after six, and then took a 10-9 lead in the top of the seventh. La Junta tied it in the bottom half of that inning, and then pushed the winning run across in the ninth.

    3A: (1) University 14, (6) Brush 8

The two teams battled back and forth, trading the lead four times in the first four innings, before University broke the game open.

The Bulldogs pushed two across in the fifth, and then exploded for a seven-run sixth inning in the win.
