  • All-state football teams for the 2020 season

    The 2020 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

    Because there will be two football seasons during the 2020-21 school year, this is the all-state football team for Season A. There will be a separate all-state football team released for Season C.

  • Big plays lift Bear Creek football to win over Wheat Ridge

    LAKEWOOD — It appeared the only thing that could stop Bear Creek senior Adrian Valenzuela from finding the end zone were penalty flags Friday night at Jeffco Stadium.

    The big playmaker for the Bears (2-3, 2-2 in Class 4A Jeffco League) had four touchdown catches of 66, 20, 13 and 30 yards to help Bear Creek to a 46-25 victory over Wheat Ridge.

    “Honestly, coming into this game my mentality was this was going to be the last time playing at Jeffco Stadium,” Valenzuela said. “I wanted to go out with a bang.”

    Valenzuela also had a kickoff return and punt return for touchdowns called back because of Bear Creek penalties late in the second quarter and early in the third quarter. If not for the flags, the senior could have had six touchdown on the night.

    “I’ll take the four receiving touchdowns, but man, I was hurting seeing those flags on the kickoff return and punt return,” Valenzuela said.

    Valenzuela did put the hurt on Wheat Ridge (0-5, 0-4) helping the Bears score 25 unanswered points to open up a 39-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.

    “Explosive,” is how Bear Creek’s first-year head coach Matt Steinfeldt described Valenzuela. “There are a lot of special pieces on this football team. Adrian is one of those that stood out on film. He missed a couple of games with an injury. He is now just getting into that in-game season.”

    Bear Creek junior quarterback Jaedon Minter tossed all four touchdowns to Valenzuela as Bear Creek picked up its second victory in three weeks.

    “I would love it,” Minter said of wishing he had Valenzuela for one more season. “He was my No. 1 receiver. He is a hard worker and the main guy I have to look for.”

    Wheat Ridge senior Sam Mcdonough and Bear Creek junior Richie Caballero scored on short touchdown runs in the first quarter as the 4A Jeffco rivals went into the second quarter tied 7-7. Then it turned into the Valenzuela show.

    His 66-yard touchdown with 11:15 left in the second quarter gave the Bears a 14-7 lead. The Farmers (0-5, 0-4) responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Luciano Vecchiarelli and 32-yard field goal by senior Matthias England to put Wheat Ridge up 17-14.

    However, Minter hooked up with Valenzuela for a big 20-yard touchdown with 2:05 left before halftime to give the Bears the lead 21-17.

    “It was all about my team,” Valenzuela said. “I couldn’t have done any of this without my team and my lineman. This was a team win. Yes, I scored four touchdowns, but I couldn’t have done it without my team.”

    Bear Creek dominated the third quarter with the Bears’ defense not allowing the Farmers to cross midfield. Junior Andrew Montoya kicked a 34-yard touchdown and Minter found Valenzuela for his third touchdown of the game. The 13-yard touchdown catch gave the Bears a 31-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.

    Minter to Valenzuela for a 30-yard touchdown with 8:38 left in the fourth quarter put the icing on the victory cake for the Bears.

    “As seniors we wanted to leave our legacy and our mark on this place,” Valenzuela said, who took photos with his fellow seniors at midfield after the victory.

    Bear Creek is scheduled to close out its regular-season schedule next Friday night against Golden (1-3, 1-2) at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

    “When we came into this program we knew there was a lot of talent here that we could mold and develop,” Steinfeldt said. “Consistency going into Golden is a huge thing for us.”

    Bear Creek will likely play a non-playoff game on the road for Week 7 to close out the season.

    “I feel like this program is going to keep on winning,” Minter said. “We found a new coaching staff that loves us. They know exactly what to do to have us win.”

Prep football action started up in early October. We’ve got highlights from four games — Columbine vs Arvada West, Pomona vs Lakewood, Central of Grand Junction vs Dakota Ridge and Wheat Ridge vs Chatfield — from the first few weeks of the 6-game regular season. Boys tennis season wrapped up with Lakewood and Ralston Valley having good showings at the Class 5A state tournament at Gates Tennis Center in Denver. Cross country season also concluded with the Jeffco League Championships that led into the state meet held in Colorado Springs.

    These team were created following a process where the coaches voted upon a list of nominees. Players who were named first-team all-league are eligible for the all-state ballot.

  • Chatfield football survives scare against Wheat Ridge in 4A Jeffco opener

    LAKEWOOD — One big offensive pass play and a defensive stop on the final play of the game Saturday afternoon allowed Chatfield to grab its first win of the season.

    “It came down to that last play on the goal-line,” Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin said after the Chargers (1-1, 1-0 in 4A Jeffco League) hung on for a 10-3 victory over Wheat Ridge. “I credit our kids for not giving up.”

    Wheat Ridge (0-2, 0-1) looked poised to score the game-tying touchdown in the final seconds. The Farmers drove from Chatfield’s 40-yard line in less than two minutes. Quarterback Dom Cross guided the Farmers down to the 2-yard line, but his pass intended for senior Sam McDonough on a play-action roll out fell incomplete as time expired.

    “It’s a young team and if you can find ways to win it’s all we can ask for right now,” McGatlin said. “Wheat Ridge never gave up. They have a lot of guys who play both ways. That is a tough group.”

    The Farmers took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter with a 37-yard field goal by sophomore Francisco Munoz. It would be the lone points Wheat Ridge would score.

    Chatfield tied it up 3-3 with a field goal by junior Andre Haddad midway through the second quarter.

    The offensive play of the game came just before halftime. Chatfield senior quarterback Ethan Delfino hooked up with sophomore Mason Lowe for a 57-yard touchdown with 3:53 left in the second quarter to give the Chargers a 10-3 lead.

    “I was getting bracketed with triple coverage,” Lowe said of his 57-yard touchdown catch. “I saw the pass come over the middle. I tipped it with my left hand to myself and just took off from there.”

    McGatlin wasn’t even sure if he would have the explosive sophomore on the field Saturday after Lowe suffered a minor leg injury during the week.

    “He (Lowe) is a special kid. We are going to have to ride him a little bit,” McGatlin said of Lowe playing some tailback and receiver on offense. “Ultimately we want to be a team that doesn’t have to rely on him so much.”

    Lowe’s touchdown would be the final score of the game that featured several punts and marred by a bushel of penalty flags on both teams that stalled any offensive momentum for the Chargers or Farmers.

    “That was crazy,” Lowe said of the scoreless second half. “I didn’t think my touchdown would be the difference in the game. It was a great team win. We needed it.”

    Chatfield is back at Jeffco Stadium next Saturday to face Bear Creek (0-2, 0-1). Dakota Ridge (2-0, 1-0) and Standley Lake (2-0, 1-0) are the two undefeated team left in 4A Jeffco through Week 2. The No. 2 ranked Eagles have been impressive outscoring their first two opponents 113-26.

    The Chargers are scheduled to face rival Dakota Ridge on the final week of the regular season on Nov. 13.

    “Our hope is just find a way to win this next week,” McGatlin said looking ahead. “We need to get a lot better before we see them (Dakota Ridge).”

    Wheat Ridge will be looking to pick up its first win of the season against rival Golden on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the North Area Athletic Complex. First-year head coach Nick Leonard, who moved from an assistant to the head coach just before Week 1, will try to keep the Demons (0-2, 0-1) winless.

    The state tournament brackets were released for all three classifications of softball on Sunday evening.

    The softball seeding committee met at 6 p.m. Sunday to review the qualification and seeding criteria, which took into account the final RPI standings of the regular season, the final coaches poll, as well as the final rankings from MaxPreps. That combined data is posted here.

    First, the group reviewed automatic qualifiers from each league. Then the remaining spots on the bracket were filled according to the next-highest ranking teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index.

    Heading the fields as No. 1 seeds are Eaton (3A), Wheat Ridge (4A) and Rock Canyon (5A).

    The first-round games can be played either Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week, and will be hosted by the higher seed. Quarterfinals will be held on Thursday, and will also be hosted by the higher seed.

    The semifinals and finals will be held at Aurora Sports Park on Oct. 10.
