  • No. 9 Manitou Springs girls soccer knocks off No. 3 St. Mary’s in 3A

    MANITOU SPRINGS — When Manitou Springs midfielder Kaity Vogel lines up to take a penalty kick, she becomes a creature of habit. Prior to taking her shot, she takes aim the back-left corner of the goal, which is exactly how she gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead over St. Mary’s.

    The score would hold up and Vogel, a sophomore, gave her senior teammates something they had yet to experience in their time with the Mustangs, a win over the rival Pirates.

    The cross-town rivals battled through a scoreless first half that saw St. Mary’s get several chances to get the ball into the net. Forward Emily Loof had the best chance for the Pirates as she gained possession of the ball in front of the net off a corner kick. Her shot attempt couldn’t clear traffic in front of the Manitou goal and was eventually cleared.

    In the second half, the Mustangs grew tired of allowing the Pirates to control the ball and took the attack, which helped lead to a much-needed win. The Mustangs were the victims of a 6-0 beat down at the hands of Holy Family on Wednesday and they knew that a win before a week off during spring break could drastically change the outlook on their season.

    “I was telling (St. Mary’s coach) Greg (Braha) that I think we needed this more than they did and that they’re going to be fine,” Manitou coach Mike Fox. “This is great momentum for us after struggling a little bit early.”

    The see-saw battle prevented either team from taking a clear advantage through most of the contest. A break finally came with 19:56 remaining in the game when Vogel was fouled within the goal box, allowing the Mustangs to take the penalty shot, which led to the only goal scored in the game and the biggest win of the Mustangs’ young season.

    “I think we finally worked together,” Vogel said. “Holy Family was a really good game for us to learn from and we just came out as a team and really wanted it. They’re our rivals. It felt amazing.”

    The loss for the Pirates is the first on the year. Through the first two games of their season they had been outscoring their opponents 20-0. Braha said that Manitou was a tough team to face, but the Pirates were without five players for various reasons which saw them bring only nine varsity players to the game.

    “It’s all a process for us. We’ve played a league game very early but you want your non-league opponents to get you ready for your league and your league opponents to help you build for the playoffs,” Braha said. “In our case, we use our non-league opponents to help us get ready for state playoffs and you want to play these tough teams.”

    The Pirates came into the season as one of the favorites to contend for a state title, but in their desire to succeed down the stretch, they have to go through a schedule that will force them to overcome adversity.

    “They felt like their backs were against the wall, I think we haven’t been stressed yet,” Braha said. “Our team doesn’t know what it feels like to be in this kind of game yet, but now they do.”

    Both teams will return to action Apr. 1 when each school returns from their spring break vacation.

  • Boulder joins 5A girls soccer ranking

    Boulder has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com girls soccer ranking in 5A.

    The Panthers are No. 9 following wins over Cherokee Trail and Loveland to open the season.

    Elsewhere, the 4A poll added three new teams: No. 6 Evergreen, No. 8 Sand Creek and No. 9 Battle Mountain.

    In 3A, Fountain Valley was the lone newcomer at No. 10.

    All three No. 1 teams — Mountain Vista (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A) — remained the same this week.

  • 3A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Holy Family jumps out early and cruises

    AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Last year in the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament, Holy Family was given a lesson by Eaton.

    The Tigers, who came in as the top-seeded team in this year’s edition, have a different mind-set.

    They jumped out to a 14-0 lead in Thursday’s quarterfinals and kept building as they advanced to the semis with a convincing 70-40 victory over Brush.

    “We were definitely prepared,” junior guard Luke Golter said.

    Were they ever. He was among the leaders in that aspect.

    Golter was electric from the outside, nailing a trio of 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points.

    “We’ve been talking about playing in the big arena,” Tigers coach Pete Villecco said of preparing for the Great 8 at the Air Force Academy.

    Holy Family had played in the previous two state tournaments but is still seeking the state title. They got off to a strong start not only by scoring quickly.

    “We told the kids to find their feet,” Villecco said of focusing on shooting form.

    They also did it by forcing Bruch into misses on its first nine tries.

    “Win every possession – that’s what our mind-set is,” Golter said.

    Golter washardly the only offensive contributor for the Tigers. Ryan Willis had 18 points, 12 coming from beyond the arc, and Chris Helbig added 11.

    “We have so many weapons,” Golter said.

    Holy Family’s boys and girls teams both come in as the top seeds in the Great 8. That, Velleccio said, is great for the school.

    “The spirit in the building is at an all-time high,” Velleccio said.

    It’s given both teams motivation. Golter said that what the boys team needs to keep the run going.

    “Just play with the same swagger,” he said of the goal of keeping the confidence level up.

    The Tigers play Colorado Springs Christian at 5:30 in Friday evening’s first boys semifinal.

    “Our expectations are that we’re going to work our tails off,” Velleccio vowed.

    Colorado Academy 67, Moffat County 62

    The Class 3A boys state basketball tournament kicked off with a barnburner at the Air Force Academy Thursday morning.

    Colorado Academy overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to overtake Moffat County down the stretch 67-62.

    The lead changed hands three times in the final minute and a half with Chris Kuelling’s 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining giving the Mustangs the lead for good. Colorado Academy sealed the win with a steal and basket by Christian Hyatt with seconds remaining.

    Jack Buckmelter led the Mustangs with 28 points, offsetting a matching performance by Moffat County’s Kort Hathhorn.

    Colorado Springs Christian 69, Denver Science & Tech 49

    With three scorers in double figures, the Lions stretched a 32-19 halftime lead into a comfortable victory.

    Justin Engesser paced the Lions with 17 points; Dante Fewell added 12 and Nic Doherty 11.

    Deron Harrell led all scorers with 19 for the Knights while Nathaniel Cox chipped in 16.

    Faith Christian 50, Manitou Springs 30

    The Eagles led throughout, holding an eight-point halftime advantage which grew to 37-25 entering the fourth quarter.

    Two players were particularly dominant on the offensive end, Gabriel Hegarty scoring from the outside and Grant Harkness doing damage underneath. Hegarty led all scorers with 13 points; Harkness chipped in 12 and pulled down a game-high six rebounds.

    Chase Megyeri paced the Mustangs with 12 points and five boards.

    Faith Christian goes up against Colorado Academy in Friday’s late semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Manitou Springs and Moffat County play a 1:15 p.m. consolation game.

  • 3A girls basketball Great 8 roundup: Experienced Lamar continues its mission

    AIR FORCE ACADEMY — This particular Lamar girls basketball team had never qualified for the Class 3A state tournament.

    The seniors, in particular, knew what to expect, however. They had attended the state tournament as spectators in previous years. And they knew the history of Lamar girls basketball.

    The team came in to Thursday’s state quarterfinals with a mission, which began with an easy 48-27 victory over Peak to Peak to advance to Friday’s state semifinals.

    The five seniors, two of whom come off the bench and many of whom have started since they were freshmen, spent their youth playing whatever sport was in season.

    “These seniors have grown up together,” Savages coach Erik Melgoza said. “They’re like sisters.”

    “I think it really helps us that we’ve played so long together,” senior point guard Chelsea Vallejos said.

    Vallejos was a big factor in Lamar’s ability to set the tone early and establish control. She hit a 3-pointer to give the Savages an 8-6 lead. More importantly, she was effective as Lamar’s floor general.

    The Savages’ defense frustrated the Pumas in the second quarter as Peak to Peak got off only four field goal attempts in falling behind 23-12. The Savages pushed the pace in extending their lead throughout the second half.

    “The kids followed the game plan,” Melgoza said, allowing him to go four deep to his bench and give his starters a bit of rest.

    Vallejos, who tied for team-high scoring honors with Taylor Wertz as each scored 13, was just as effective driving to the basket as she was from the outside.

    “We want to be able to drive, usually down the middle,” she said of challenging the Pumas’ taller front court.

    Lamar won four consecutive state titles in the mid- to late-1990s.

    “A lot of these girls were little girls when they won those,” Melgoza said.

    But they look on the gym walls and take in that history.

    Lamar’s likely semifinal opponent is Holy Family, which has won five of the last six 3A state titles. Vallejos said her team will take in the Tigers’ quarterfinal game with great interest.

    “We’ll watch their game (at 4 p.m. against Eaton),” Vallejos said. “We’re not going to mess around.”

    “I feel like these girls are prepared,” Melgoza said.

    Sterling 57, Bishop Machebeuf 44

    In the day’s first game, the Tigers built a 31-20 halftime lead and made it stand up, matching the Buffaloes basket for basket in the second half.

    Taylor Knudson and Kylie Chavez paced the Tigers with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Maggie Smith’s 13 points were tops for Machebeuf.

    Holy Family 52, Eaton 30

    The Tigers opened up a close game by going on an run 8-1 in the first four minutes of the second quarter to take a 26-19 halftime lead, then outscored Eaton 17-6 in the third to pull away.

    The Chavez sisters keyed the attack, with sophomore Katie scoring 18 points while Lindsey, a senior, added 15. Between them they hit six 3-pointers. Maggie Spitzer added to a balanced attack with 13 points.

    The Reds had five players score between four and seven points, led by Bailey Schumacher.

    Holy Family plays Lamar at 7 p.m. Friday In the semifinals. Eaton and Peak to Peak play an 8:45 a.m. consolation game.

    Pagosa Springs 48, Manitou Springs 34

    The Pirates took advantage of cold shooting by the Mustangs early, holding them to seven first-half points in building a 12-point advantage.

    Manitou Springs briefly cut its deficit to single digits in the second half but baskets by Taylor Strobehecker and Payton Shahan helped the second-seeded Pirates begin a run down the stretch. Shelby Megyeri’s 10 points were tops for the Mustangs.

    Shahan led a balanced attack with 13 points as eight Pirates got into the scoring column.

    Pagosa Springs meets Sterling in Friday’s first semifinal at 4 p.m. Manitou Springs and Bishop Machebeuf meet in the consolation round at 11:45 a.m.

  • Top teams in girls soccer’s preseason: Mountain Vista, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy

    Mountain Vista, coming off of its second championship in three years, leads the preseason CHSAANow.com girls soccer poll in 5A.

    The Golden Eagles return a number of key pieces, including leading scorer Megan Massey (17 goals, nine assists) and sophomore Mallory Pugh (10 goals, three assists).

    They are followed by No. 2 Rock Canyon, last season’s runner-up, No. 3 Fossil Ridge and No. 4 Legacy. No. 5 Fairview rounds out the top five.

    Another defending champion, Cheyenne Mountain, heads the 4A poll. The Indians received 10 of the 12 first-place votes. They return their leading scorer, as well, in junior Hannah Gerdin. Starting goalie Hunter Peifer is also back.

    Broomfield is No. 2 in the 4A ranking, and is followed by No. 3 Palmer Ridge, No. 4 Valor Christian and No. 5 Air Academy.

    Colorado Academy is the preseason No. 1 in 3A.

    The Classical Academy, last season’s runner-up, is No. 2. Defending champion Peak to Peak comes in at No. 3, Kent Denver is No. 4 and Holy Family is No. 5.

    Class 4A

    Pueblo South is headed to the semifinals for the first time since 2004 with a 27-21 win over Dakota Ridge.

    “We got them to fumble in their first possession, and we marched it right down and got a big score, got some momentum going in our favor,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. “Then we had a big interception and a long return, and were able to make some plays off of that and turn that into points, as well. We’ve been pretty successful this year in winning the turnover battle. If you win turnovers and third downs, you’re going to be OK most of the time.”

    Pueblo South will face Montrose in the semifinals.

    “Our kids were excited after the game, and I was excited for them,” Goddard said. “I told them they did a good job, and that they’re a special team and they have an opportunity to do something special here, and they’re making their impact on the program. But it’s time to go to work on Monday and we’ve got to start thinking about Montrose.”

    Montrose beat Denver South 47-27 on Saturday. The Indians led 33-6 at halftime.

    “Our guys did a great job of just executing. We were able to get on them on some special teams stuff and get a couple of short fields,” Montrose coach Todd Casebier told the Scoreboard Show. “We had some good special teams in the first half.

    “South kept playing until the very end, but we were just too much for them today.”

    Class 3A

    Defending champion Silver Creek rolled into the semifinals. The Raptors handled Pueblo East, 34-14.

    “It was a really big win. That Pueblo East team was as good a team as we’ve played,” Silver Creek coach Mike Apodaca told the Scoreboard Show. “We’re real fortunate to get a win.”

    Silver Creek will play Delta in the semifinals. Delta beat Glenwood Springs 13-9 on Saturday.

    “We’re excited about the trip,” Apodaca said. “Western Slope football is good football. … It’s exciting. It’s good 3A football, and a good community, so it’s an exciting trip for our kids.”

    Coronado beat Roosevelt 29-27 to claim a spot in the other semifinal. It will meet The Classical Academy, which upset Palisade on Friday.

    “There’s special things happening with these young men,” Coronado coach Bobby Lizzarraga told the Scoreboard Show. “It’s showing up on the field.”

    Class 2A

    The 2A title matchup is set: Faith Christian will play Platte Valley. Both teams upset higher-seeded opponents on Saturday.

    Faith Christian, seeded fourth, beat No. 1 Brush 24-14 on Saturday.

    “In the first half, it was one of those games where it looked like neither team was going to punt, because we couldn’t stop each other,” Faith Christian coach Blair Hubbard told the Scoreboard Show. “Then, the adjustments and the turnovers in the second half were just a big part of it.”

    No. 3 Platte Valley beat No. 2 Manitou Springs, 13-7. The Broncos are making a second-consecutive trip to the title game.

    “We made some mistakes that have been uncharacteristic of what we’ve been doing the last few weeks,” Platte Valley Troy Hoffman told the Scoreboard Show, “but we fought back, we regrouped very well in the fourth quarter and the kids fought through this barrier, this obstacle and they came through with a victory today. I’m very proud of them.”

    Class 1A

    Paonia will face Centauri in the 1A championship next week.

    Centauri topped Limon 21-8 to reach the title game for the first time in school history.

    “We’re ready to play this,” Centauri coach Kyle Forster told the Scoreboard Show. “This was a goal we had 14 weeks ago, and it’s come true. Now we’re just going to have to go in and play our best because Paonia is playing their best football of the year right now, too. So it’s going to be a real big dog-fight.”

    Paonia beat Buena Vista 28-14 on Saturday.

    “We came out and we were ready to go,” Paonia coach Brent McRae told the Scoreboard Show, “but getting (an early) score and then the first three-and-out we got and scoring again — just the confidence. Our kids knew they would be able to run the ball and that just carried us the whole game.”

    Of the title game, McRae said, “It’s going to be a fun day.”

    8-man

    Caliche and Dayspring Christian will play for the 8-man title.

    Caliche topped top-seeded Hoehne 44-40, while Dayspring Christian edged Norwood 44-43 with a 22-yard field goal in the final moments.

    “We made big plays. That’s probably what the difference was,” Dayspring Christian coach Mick Holmes told the Scoreboard Show. “It came down to a field goal with seven seconds left. It’s kind of funny — we talked about it all week: ‘It may come down to a field goal.’ And we put it through the uprights.”
