  • Notebook: State’s top three girls lacrosse programs undergo coaching changes

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
When Centaurus and Air Academy met last season, it was a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Next season, both teams will have new coaches. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

For each of the past four seasons, girls lacrosse’s semifinals have had one thing in common: Cherry Creek, Air Academy and Centaurus have all been there.

Well, those schools now have another common thread: all three programs — at this moment, the top three in the sport — will have new head coaches going into the 2015 season.

Centaurus’ Genny Horning has stepped down as the Warriors coach, BoCoPreps.com reported on Monday. That followed Air Academy’s Sean Harmon and Cherry Creek’s Brianne Tierney, who resigned within a day of one another in June.

Cherry Creek has since hired longtime assistant Kathryn Ames as its new coach. Air Academy has not yet made a new hire.

It may mean that new blood will rise. Chatfield, for instance, made its first-ever semifinal appearance last season; Arapahoe’s been in the quarterfinals for each of the past three seasons; Chaparral is another possibility.

Or old blood could reemerge. Kent Denver, which has won three state titles in school history, made four-consecutive semifinal appearances from 2009-12.

Now, this isn’t to say that Ames, or whoever Air Academy and Centaurus eventually hire, won’t have immediate success. Tierney won a state championship in her first season (2013). That could very well happen again.

And, mind you, Cherry Creek has appeared in every single state championship game in the sport’s 17-year sanctioned history. So change hasn’t seemed to bother the Bruins in the past.

But that these three giants of the sport are all changing coaches in the same offseason may signal there’s a bit of transition ahead for girls lacrosse, at least in the short term.

DSST-Green Valley Ranch volleyball makes history

When Denver Science & Tech-Green Valley Ranch qualified for the Class 3A volleyball regionals on Monday, it marked the first time in school history a team was headed to the postseason.

The Raptors, 10-7-1 this season, earned the No. 36 seed, and are playing in Region 1 with top-seeded Eaton and No. 24 Middle Park.

It’s DSST-GVR’s first year as a sanctioned member of CHSAA.

“We’re super pumped about it,” athletic director Jamelle Austin said on Wednesday. “We’ve got to go to Eaton, Colorado at 4:30 on Halloween night, so we’re going to have some fun with it.”

The school put up a 20-foot poster congratulating the team, and is planning a pep rally on Thursday.

“Once we got the news, that was Monday morning, we made an announcement to the school and the girls were really excited,” Austin said.

    Short stuff

    • It’s always fun when this happens: Grand Junction was on the outside of the 5A playoffs looking in until a win from rival Montrose pushed the Tigers over the 32-team threshold by adding to their Wild Card point totals.
    • Volleyball regionals are this weekend. That means the state tournament is next Saturday. In my mind, volleyball’s tournament is the only thing that can come close to matching the atmosphere at state wrestling, which is probably CHSAA’s premier event with its huge attendance and the fact that it draws athletes from all corners of the state to one location. State volleyball is chaotic with five courts going at once, but it’s a good chaos. The event is also unique in that it’s the only team sport where all classifications come together under one roof to decide championships.

    CHSAA regional seeding/pairing procedure

    1. All league champions will automatically earn a berth to regionals.

    2. The remaining teams (up to 36) will be selected based on the MaxPreps Rankings published at the end of the regular season.

    3. Teams will then be seeded on the CHSAA regional seeding criteria:

    • The MaxPreps rankings will be the primary consideration
    • The CHSAA Seeding Committee will only make changes based on splitting up league opponents and geographical considerations (if and when possible)

    4. Teams seeded Nos. 1-12 will host regionals.

    5. All regional winners will automatically advance to the state champions

  • Grandview nabs No. 1 ranking after 5A football poll shaken up

    Cherry Creek Grandview football
Quarterback Cody Summers and Grandview are now the top-ranked team in Class 5A football. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Grandview, now 8-0, is the new No. 1 team in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A football rankings this week.

The Wolves took over the top spot previously occupied by Valor Christian, which lost an in-state game for the first time in 28 outings on Friday when then-No. 9 Cherry Creek upset the Eagles 33-17.

Grandview is unbeaten to this point in the rugged Centennial League, and beat Cherry Creek in Week 7. It topped a very solid Overland team 53-13 last Thursday.

    But it wasn’t a clear-cut, unanimous vote.

    Ralston Valley Pomona football

Ralston Valley also had a good claim to the top ranking. The Mustangs are 8-0, too, and won a monster game over then-No. 3 Pomona on Friday. They settled into the No. 2 spot this week, just 10 overall points behind Grandview.

Grandview received 10 first-place votes; Ralston Valley got five.

Meanwhile, Fairview moved up two places to No. 3 after escaping an upset bid from Fossil Ridge.

Pomona dropped one spot to fourth, Cherry Creek rocketed up from No. 9 to No. 5, and Valor fell all the way to sixth. Regis Jesuit is seventh, dropping one place despite a good win over then-No. 7 Mountain Vista.

Rocky Mountain remained at No. 8, Mountain Vista fell to No. 9 and Doherty rejoined the 5A poll at No. 10.

Speaking to the uncertainty in the 5A ranking at the moment, spots Nos. 4-7 are separated by a mere five points. Things could get much more clouded — Valor Christian and Grandview play in their regular season finale on Friday.

In the other six classificatoins, none of the top-ranked teams were displaced. It means Pine Creek (4A), Discovery Canyon (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Arickaree/Woodlin (6-man) stayed on top.

There were no newcomers in the 4A ranking this week, though 3A added Palisade (No. 10), and St. Mary’s (No. 9). Eaton (No. 10) joined the 2A poll. 1A added Crowley County (No. 10), and North Park joined 6-man’s ranking at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Fossil Ridge joins 5A volleyball poll at No. 10

Fossil Ridge gave Fairview volleyball its first loss last week. This week, the SaberCats have joined CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A rankings.

Fossil Ridge (13-5) beat Fairview 3-1 on Thursday. They enter the poll at No. 10.

Elsewhere in 5A, Rampart continued to lead the way, and Grandview moved up three places from No. 5 to No. 2 after a week which included a win over then-No. 2 Eaglecrest.

Lewis-Palmer extended its unanimous grip on the 4A poll. The Rangers won a top-2 showdown with Cheyenne Mountain last week.

Each of the other three No. 1 teams also held firm atop their respective rankings. Those are Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Fleming (1A).

Volleyball’s regular season is winding down. In fact, 1A and 2A are already in their districts. 3A-5A end their regular seasons on Saturday.

As such, these will serve as the final polls of the 2014 season. Regional seeding will post on CHSAANow.com next Monday.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
