BOULDER — While this group of Kadets hadn’t reached the Coors Events Center for the Final 4 in hoops, they don’t lack for championship experience.

First cousins James Sims, Austin Dewing, and David Louthan, along with  Henry Yocum and Mark Beatty, capped off a perfect 20-0 season with the Class 4A soccer state championship in the fall. The core got their chance to add to their sports legacy with a basketball crown and delivered by beating previously undefeated Longmont 64-59 to claim the 4A boys basketball crown in a sensational overtime battle.

Air Academy (24-4), a No. 2 seed, jumped out to a rather shocking 26-8 early lead as they broke Longmont’s vaunted trapping zone defense with layup after layup. The Kadets shot an incredible 11-for-12 from the field in the first half and took a 30-20 lead into the break.

Then, things got out of control wild as Longmont (27-1) tied the game at 34 late in the third as Blake O’Grady scored 8 points in the frame. The Kadets and Trojans went back and forth the rest of the way, but Air Academy’s grit, composure and will to win allowed them to sneak past the No. 1 ranked team in the state.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt when David Louthan goes 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final minute of regulation and into overtime.

“At the end of the game the ball always goes to David,” Air Academy coach Barry Clark said. “We know that he’ll make the right decisions. He knows how to win and that’s really our play. Give David the ball and we roll with it. We put a lot of pressure on that kid and it doesn’t bug him at all. He’s amazing.”

“I was thinking about my release, staying relaxed, and focusing on anything but the fact this is the state championship,” Louthan said of how he stayed composed at the line.

Louthan finished 9-for-12 from the line, scored 21 points, went 5-of-6 from the field, and had six assists and five rebounds. He wasn’t alone in timely baskets as the entire team played together and for one another as Paul Ambuul scored 19 points, going 7-for-7 from the line, and James Sims chipped in 13.

“Each and every guy made a huge contribution,” Louthan said. “It was a team effort.”

Air Academy finished 20-for-28 from the field and 21-31 from the line. Longmont shot 20-for-50 and 5-for-17 from three. They only made 14-of-23 freebies, as O’Grady went 5-of-11 with several critical misses. In a game with so many twists and turns, Air Academy’s poise in a state championship setting proved to be the difference.

“Most of us had already played in two state championships,” Louthan said of losing in the soccer finals two seasons ago and winning last fall. “I think it helped us stay more composed. We were used to the pressure.”

The trust in one another was evident for the Kadets, as well.

“If I were to look at it, if you get a core group to believe in each other and you might not win the state championship, but if they fight for each other, they are going to be successful,” Clark raved. “This game is not for me. It’s for those guys playing for each other.”

Air Academy won their second state championship in boys basketball, their first since 1989 when they defeated Greeley West in the second largest classification at the time, class 3A.

Justinian Jessup, a talented lanky guard who should be in the mix for 4A player of the year honors, hit a couple enormous three-pointers late to give the Trojans life. He scored 16 points before fouling out in the final minute of regulation.

Kevin Mitchell added 17 points and O’Grady had 11 for Longmont in defeat. Longmont was playing in their first state finals since 1997 when they lost to Columbine in 5A. The Trojans last won it all in 1942. They do return nine juniors, including Jessup, so Longmont could be the preseason No. 1-ranked team.

BOULDER — In a game of inches, adjustments matter. And in Friday’s Class 4A boys basketball semifinal matchup between the Longmont Trojans and the Sierra Stallions, there was never much breathing room — on the court and on the scoreboard.

So Longmont head coach Jeff Kloster’s decision to switch to a trapping, zone defense to start the second quarter paid major dividends, as the Trojans defeated the high-flying Stallions 43-36 to advance to the championship this Sunday at the CU Event Center in Boulder.

“The biggest thing was making sure that we were always in what we call a contain situation, where everyone was accountable, and for the most part we contained them,” said Kloster after the game. “We knew they were very athletic and we needed to make sure we kept the ball away from the hoop.”

Not that it as easy for the Trojans — in a game with seven lead changes and numerous momentum swings, the Stallions were able to keep the game tight after trailing by as many as nine in the second quarter.

Sierra senior Keandre Lewis was a big part of the Stallions keeping the game close. Lewis finished with 15 points and four steals, part of 13 steals on the night for Sierra. The Stallions were able to convert those steals into fast-break points on the other end, the kind of easy points that were hard to come by against Longmont’s stout defense.

The Stallions had other opportunities. They pulled down 13 offensive rebounds when they were able to get into the paint, but struggled to finish inside, converting just 31.1 percent of their shots from the field on the night.

And with the game tied at 35 and five minutes remaining, Longmont had one more trump card left in their back pocket. According to Kloster, Longmont’s ability to pull away late didn’t involve much coaching on his part; he just had to let his best player — junior Justinian Jessup — be himself.

    Sierra Longmont boys basketball

“J.J. is J.J. He’s a special player, the best two-way player I’ve ever had in the last 24 years of Longmont high school,” said Kloster. “He’s just one of those kids where you just allow him to do his thing.”

Jessup certainly did that and more down the stretch, with eight of Longmont’s ten points in the final frame. He got things started with a nifty pickpocket in the backcourt which he turned into two points at the rim, and with Sierra trying to prolong the game, he converted all four of the free throws to help grow the gap.

“Their speed and quickness on the perimeter, those kind of teams you have to be patient with the ball and try and get good shots,” said Jessup. “We didn’t do a good job of that all the time but during those last four minutes we did a really good job.”

Jessup finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocked shots, all game-highs. Longmont junior forward Kevin Mitchell added ten points of his own as Longmont’s second-leading scorer.

In the end, the work of Jessup, plus a suffocating defensive effort in the fourth — the Trojans held Sierra to just four points in the final frame — was enough to move Longmont on to their first state championship title game since 1997.

“It took everyone, a great team effort when we had to buckle down late. Defense is what won the ballgame. The composure of us in the last three, four minutes — tremendous composure,” said Kloster. “The thing I’ve got to say about my kids, they compete. Down the stretch, they showed their grit.”

With just one game left to go, Longmont will try and keep their undefeated season alive and win their first title game since 1942 against Air Academy on Saturday in Boulder. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.

  • Sand Creek moves to first girls basketball title game in school history

BOULDER — Defense wins championships, or so the cliché goes.

For the Sand Creek Scorpions, the old saying might just ring true after they defeated the Longmont Trojans 59-31 Thursday night at the Coors Event Center in Boulder to advance to the Class 4A girls basketball championship game this weekend.

One year after falling in the Great 8, Sand Creek never let this semifinal be in doubt. Behind the strong work of junior forward Liah Davis, the Scorpions defense tightened the noose early on the overmatched Trojans.

Davis finished with six blocks and a steal, and her presence down low allowed the rest of Sand Creek’s energetic defenders stay in the face of Longmont’s ball-handler, even when they overcommitted.

“Even sometimes when we over-played, we still got back into position,” said Davis. “I think we’re a really good defensive team where we can be out of position, and still have that second line helping out.”

Despite both sides turning the ball over in the first, it was the Scorpions defense that was really bearing down, and there was just no room for the Trojans to breath — much less advance the ball or get a shot off. The only Trojan who found any room to work with was junior Sydney Wetterstrom, had eight of Longmont’s nine points in the first.

Wetterstrom finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, the only Trojan in double-figures by a wide margin.

The Scorpions defense didn’t let up as the game went on either. The Trojans wound up turning the ball over 24 times and shot just 24.1 percent on the night. Already up 15 points at the half, Sand Creek shut out the Trojans completely in the third quarter, putting any doubts about their dominate performance to rest.

“Compliments to number 15 (Wetterstrom). She scared me when I watched video. So we had to try to do something to neutralize her. Our goal was to defend the passer and front her, because they love to lob it to her,” said Sand Creek first-year head coach Frank Haist. “Fortunately, it worked.”

Meanwhile, on the offense end, the Scorpions spread their attack around.

Leading the way again was Davis, who finished with 10 points and added 17 rebounds for good measure. The 6-foot-2forward was often the first one down the court for either squad, and worked her way into great position using not just her size, but her speed.

“She runs the court for a big girl very well, and the thing is, she’s getting rebounds and then she’s running to the low post most possessions,” said Haist. “And I didn’t take her out much. For being a big strong girl and having that type of cardio, where she can stay in the game and be effective, that’s a testament to her.”

Junior guard Oliana Squires also had a big night for Sand Creek, finishing with a team-high 16 points in just over 15 minutes after getting in early foul trouble. Just as importantly, all of Sand Creek’s guards kept finding Davis, who kept getting in perfect position.

“Sometimes guards don’t see opportunities to give it to the big girl. Our guards see it and are looking to get her touches,” said Haist. “So in that context, it creates an unselfish game where guards know she needs touches if we’re going to be successful, and Liah knows that when she’s triple-teamed to kick it out and get better shots.”

The win means the Scorpions will take on the Valor Christian Eagles — the team that defeated them 67-60 in last year’s quarterfinals, ending their season — Saturday night in the 4A title game. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Coors Event Center in Boulder.

  • 4A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Longmont wins in final moments

No. 1 Longmont snuck past Valor Christian 47-46 in a back and forth battle to move to 26-0 and more importantly, earn a bid to the Final 4 for the first time since 2010.

The Trojans’ Kolton Bachman drained a shot with 3.9 seconds remaining to edge out the No. 2 seeded Eagles. Longmont had made at least the Sweet 16 the past three seasons, but this was their first Great 8 since 2011.

Longmont will face Sierra, a No. 2 seed which claimed the Colorado Springs Metro crown, in the state semifinals.

    (2) Sierra 56, (4) Pueblo South 47

A seesaw battle in Colorado Springs saw the Sierra Stallions squeeze out a 56-47 win over Pueblo South in one of four outstanding 4A Great 8 games.

Tevion Thompson left the game with an injury in the second half, but returned shortly to give the Stallions a much-needed boost. The Stallions return to the Coors Events Center where they won back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010.

    (2) Air Academy 45, (1) Golden 41

Despite a scoring drought for most of the second quarter, the Air Academy Kadets hung on to topple No. 1 Golden and advance to next weekend’s Final 4.

Austin Dewing knocked down key free throws with the waning seconds to seal the victory for the Kadets. They’ll face Pikes Peak Athletic Conference foe Lewis-Palmer Friday for a chance to go to the state championship game.

    [divider]

    (4) Lewis-Palmer 57, (3) D’Evelyn 55

Lewis-Palmer got a late steal, and then two game-winning free throws with 7.2 seconds left to pull the upset on the road.

D’Evelyn led 55-52 with 42.6 seconds remaining. Jonathan Scott hit two free throws to make it 55-54. Then, Lewis-Palmer tied the game.

It marks a return to the stage that Lewis-Palmer is very familiar with. The Rangers won titles in Boulder in 2012 and 2013.

Longmont, a No. 6 seed in the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament, upset No. 1-seeded Canon City on its home court on Friday night.

The Trojans led 23-16 at the break, and then used a 9-0 run late in the third quarter to go up 34-23. It was 39-29 after three quarters

Canon City did cut the lead to 39-33, but that was as close at the Tigers would get.

Longmont’s Sydney Wetterstrom finished the game with 28 points and 16 rebounds, according to Brad Cochi of BoCoPreps.com.

Longmont returns to the Final 4 for the first time since 2011.

The semifinals are next Thursday at CU’s Coors Events Center.

    (2) Sand Creek 59, (1) D’Evelyn 56

A close game throughout, Sand Creek was able to pull out the win in the final minute.

The Scorpions held a five-point lead at 54-49 with 1:53 to play, but a quick 5-0 D’Evelyn run tied the game with 44 seconds remaining.

Sand Creek had lost in the Great 8 each of the past three seasons. This is the program’s first-ever trip to the Final 4.

    [divider]

    (1) Pueblo West 61, (3) Mullen 45

Pueblo West held just a slim 27-25 margin at the break, but a massive 26-5 advantage in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Cyclones advanced to the Final 4.

The lead got as wide as 53-30 before a 7-0 Mullen run in the fourth closed the gap a little.

Pueblo West was last in the semifinals in 2013, when it lost to D’Evelyn. This marks the third time the Cyclones have been to the Final 4 in four seasons.

    (2) Valor Christian 53, (1) Holy Family 37

On the road, Valor Christian went in and upset Holy Family.

Valor led 27-21 at halftime, and then 38-32 after three quarters, but widened the gap in the fourth.

Kendall Bradbury had 29 points in the win.

With the win, Valor Christian returns to the Final 4. The Eagles lost to Broomfield in Boulder last season.
