  • Just a sophomore, Fort Collins’ Lauren Gregory back to defend XC crown

Fort Collins High School has a cross country program as rich in tradition as any in Colorado.

The Lambkins have claimed numerous team titles in cross country and have had a seemingly endless stream of distance runners win state crowns in cross country and track. Many athletes have gone on to compete collegiately, several at the Division I level.

Lauren Gregory, the defending Class 5A state champion in cross country entering her sophomore year, doesn’t take running at one of the better high school girls cross country programs in America for granted.

“You just feel blessed that you have those opportunities in your hometown,” said Gregory, also the 3,200-meter state champion in track. “I live ten minutes away from the best high school program I can possibly put myself into in Colorado. It was just a great experience in continuing the legacy and tradition that Fort Collins High School has held throughout the past."

Gregory burst onto the scene as a freshman, placing second at the Arapahoe Warrior Invitational and second at the Cherry Creek Invitational behind two of the best in the country, Air Academy’s Katie Rainsberger and Cherry Creek’s Jordyn Colter.

After finishing 54 seconds behind Colter at the Cherry Creek Invite, Gregory had a breakout performance at her home course two weeks later, the John Martin Invite, as the precocious freshman put a scare into Colter only three seconds back as Colter nipped her 17:56 to 17:59 for 5k.

Gregory never looked back, soundly beating Rainsberger by 34 seconds to win the Brooks/TCA Titan Thunder Invitational, handling a strong Front Range Championship field in a personal best of 17:35, and winning her regional championship in a smooth effort.

Then Gregory took advantage of an off-day at the state championships by Colter and crushed an exceptional 5A girls field by 22 seconds over Boulder’s Erin McLaughlin, 18:36 to 18:58.

“Winning state as a freshman, I forgot I was even a freshman,” Gregory said. “You just don’t even think about that. You’re just another racer I guess, but everyone else saw it as something else. I just saw it as I was the same as the other runners.”

Gregory added icing to the cake as she helped lead the Lambkins to a team title at the Nike Southwest Regionals with a sixth-place finish.

Then, at the Nike National Championships, Gregory finished seventh in arguably the most touted high school girls cross country race in American history with the likes of Niwot’s Elise Cranny, Alexa Efraimson, and Sarah Baxter. Fort Collins finished in sixth place, one spot behind rival and three-time defending 5A state champion Monarch.

Despite a remarkable freshman season, Gregory, who comes across as a humble, team-first competitor, feels she has unfinished business.

“I want our team to get to Nike again,” Gregory said, “because that was an incredible experience and I definitely want to win state this year, because getting second last year was kind of heartbreaking. We happily got second because that’s still amazing, but winning would be incredible for sure."

The Fort Collins girls have finished second behind Monarch three consecutive years at the state championships. They hope to claim their first team crown since 2010.

The 5A girls cross country season promises to be another spectacular one with the likes of Gregory and senior Colter, the state champion her freshman year, battling for individual supremacy, and Monarch, Fort Collins, and Cherry Creek expected to fight for the team crown.

  • Legacy, Erie, Sterling on top of preseason softball rankings

    (Pam Wagner)
Legacy opens as the No. 1 team in the preseason 5A softball poll. (Pam Wagner)

Two teams that finished runner-up a season ago head CHSAANow.com’s preseason softball rankings.

Erie (4A) and Sterling (3A) both fell in the championship games of their respective classifications last season. A year later, they’re both the preseason favorites.

In 5A, defending champion Legacy is the unanimous preseason No. 1. Legend, runner-up last year, is No. 2, and is followed by No. 3 Brighton, No. 4 Fossil Ridge and No. 5 Eaglecrest.

Dakota Ridge is sixth, Douglas County is seventh and Loveland is eighth. Rock Canyon (No. 9) and Fort Collins (No. 10) round out the 5A ranking.

Wheat Ridge, the defending 4A champion which is expected to rely on a heavy lineup this season, opens at No. 2 in that class.

Defending 3A champion Strasburg opens at No. 3.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

Complete rankings for each class are below.

THORNTON — The dominance of the Regis Jesuit High School boys swim and dive team continues.

The Raiders won their 20th state championship, capturing the Class 5A state title in convincing fashion Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

Regis scored 410 points, easily defeating runner-up Cherry Creek which had a 190-point total.

“This is just awesome,” said Regis senior Hennessey Stuart, who was named Colorado High School Activities Association Swimmer of the Year. “It is great to continue this legacy.”

All of Regis’ state crowns have come since 1992 and the last four have been in a row.

Hennessey led the charge for the Raiders winning the 200-yard individual medley, and the 100 backstroke — setting an all-classification record in Friday’s prelims at 46.91 seconds.

Stuart capped his career in grand fashion swimming the first leg on the Raiders’ victorious 400 freestyle relay team which set a Colorado state record at 3:00.84. Mitchell Bruckman, Christopher Dawson and Austin Phillips also were on the relay.

“I would not have wanted to break that (400 freestyle relay) record with anybody else,” said the 6-foot-1, 160-pound Stuart, who is going to swim at North Carolina State University. “We are all seniors and all captains.”

Hennessey’s younger brother, Quinlan Stuart also joined the victory parade by winning his first individual state title in the 100 breaststroke.

“Winning a state title like my brother is an honor,” said Quinlan, a junior. “I’m really happy and I just can’t explain what I’m feeling. This is a blessing and an honor to be a part of a program like this. We work our butts off all season to come here (state) and perform our best, and that’s what we did.”

Regis junior Kyle Goodwin once again finished atop the podium in diving, claiming his third consecutive state championship.

“This feels good and it just feels more rewarding each time,” said Goodwin, who won with a score of 394.25.

The Raiders 200 medley relay of the Stuart brothers, Chris Morales and Will Pieseki, also won state as well.

The swimmer who stole the spotlight from Team Regis — as least for a few moments  was Highlands Ranch’s Nathan Mueller.

The senior won his first two career state titles with wins in the 200 and 500 freestyles.

“This will probably sink in (Sunday),” said Mueller, who is signed to swim at the University of Wisconsin.  “This was one of my goals before I went off to college, so it’s cool to get that crossed off my list.”

Douglas County’s JP Beach (50 freestyle), Fort Collins’ Maxwell Holter (100 butterfly), Fairview’s Miles McKenzie (100 freestyle) and Cherry Creek’s 200 freestyle relay were the other state winners. MacKenzie won his event for the second year in a row.

“I was terrified of these guys,” MacKenzie, a senior, said. “I knew if I was going to win I needed to do something spectacular and I just put my head down. I was relaxed and I just swam my race.”

THORNTON — For the last four years, the talented Nathan Mueller has been chasing a coveted state swimming championship.

The Highlands Ranch standout took two more steps toward reaching that goal when he finished first in the prelims of the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.22) and 500 freestyle (4:26.95) Friday in the Class 5A Swim and Dive State Championships at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

“That was one of my faster times for altitude (in the 200), and I was pleased with my 500 time,” the 6-foot-4, 180-pound Mueller said.

Diving prelims begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and the finals in all events start at 2 p.m.

Mueller, who also swam legs on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle, concluded his individual effort Friday in the 500-yard freestyle — an event he placed second at state in the last two years.

Standouts Clark Smith of Regis Jesuit, who set the all-school state record in the 200-yard freestyle a year ago when he won state, and Ponderosa’s Carter Griffin, the second-place finisher, have graduated.

That opens the door for Mueller who was third in the 200 the last two seasons. Mueller has signed to swim at the University of Wisconsin.

“It’s not urgency,” Mueller said about capturing the elusive individual state crown. “I’m just ready and racing is just so much fun. I’m just excited to race (Saturday) and I think I can win both (the 200 and 500).”

When Mueller isn’t in the pool, he spends time doing graphic design projects and sleeping. Those ventures, however, haven’t kept him from being wide awake in the classroom.

“I’m planning on majoring in biomedical engineering with a pre-med kind of focus,” said Mueller, who has a 3.8 GPA. “I know I want to do something with medicine and biomedical engineering is really cool and it sound really hands-on.”

Team-wise, Regis Jesuit, which has won 12 out of the last 13 state boys swimming titles, is aiming for another one Saturday.

Individually, Regis’ Stuart Hennessey (200-yard IM, 100 backstroke) doubled up as a No. 1 qualifier for Saturday’s championship finals as did Douglas County’s JP Beach (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle).

Fort Collins’ Maxwell Holter (100 butterfly), and Regis’ Quinlan Stuart (100 breaststroke) also paced their events heading into the finals.

In the relays, Regis qualified No. 1 for the finals in the 200-yard medley, and the 400 freestyle relay and Fairview is tops in the 200 yard freestyle.

The prelims for the Class 4A state meet took place Friday in Fort Collins.

The individual swims were highlighted by Thompson Valley’s Liam Gately (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), D’Evelyn’s Daniel Graber (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), and Air Academy’s Hunter Doerr (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), who each qualified No. 1 in a pair of events for Saturday’s championship finals.

Thompson Valley’s John Thorne (100 backstroke) and Discovery Canyon’s David Keller (100 butterfly) also each won their prelim heats.

In the relays, D’Evelyn (200 medley relay), Air Academy (200 freestyle relay) and Discovery Canyon (400 freestyle relay) were prelim winners.

Air Academy is the defending state champion.

  • Fort Collins’ Gregory stars on 5A girls track’s first day

LAKEWOOD — Fort Collins distance coach Chris Suppes knew his freshman phenom, Lauren Gregory, was in perfect position in the Class 5A 3,200-meter final on Thursday at Jeffco Stadium.

“Our gameplan fell right into place,” Suppes said of Gregory’s race. “You always come up with a strategy and then you have all these alternate strategies just in case. For some reason, that two mile just fell right into her lap. The strategy was perfect, to hang with the front pack.”

“That was more the strategy,” Gregory added. “I haven’t run strategy since cross-country really. It was nice to not have to think about how many more laps I had or how much pain I was in. I just thought about what I had to do next. I felt so strong the whole time.”

Gregory’s strength brought her a state title in the 3,200 meters in arguably the best girls two-mile field in Colorado history with an impressive time of 10:39. She was merely five seconds off of legendary Boulder High runner Melody Fairchild’s state meet record of 10:34 set in 1990. Gregory’s 10:39 was also the new Fort Collins school record, a feat at a school with as much distance running tradition as any in the state.

Gregory, George Washington’s Darby Gilfillan and Fairview’s Isabelle Kennedy — all tremendous talents who had run sub 11 minutes in the 3,200 meters before — broke from the field during the first 1,600 on Thursday. They controlled the pace, a quick 10:20 3,200 clip early, and vied for the 5A crown.

Gregory moved to lane two at the start of the sixth lap, opened up her stride, and made a commanding move to leave her fellow leaders.

“I told her she couldn’t lead it until the sixth lap and then finish hard the last three and that’s what she did,” Suppes said.

The move was strong, the lead was twenty meters and growing, and Gregory could almost taste her first state championship in track.

“I kind of knew she had it about lap five, because she was very comfortable through the first five laps,” Suppes said of Gregory’s victory. “Even though the pace was fast, I know what she’s capable of and I was pretty confident at that point that she was going to win it.”

Gilfillan finished second in 10:46, Kennedy crossed at 10:47, and Horizon’s Megan Mooney (10:57) and Monarch’s Kaitlyn Benner (10:58) all broke 11.

Fort Collins’ freshman superstar had an outstanding Thursday morning at the state meet, but her day was far from finished.

The Lambkins were seeded second in the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:15 and were expected to battle Front Range Conference rivals Fairview, seeded No. 1 (9:14), and Monarch, seeded No. 3 (9:16). Fort Collins and Monarch girls both placed top-10 at the Nike National Cross-Country Team Championships this past fall and had several of the same girls on their 3,200 relays.

Fort Collins turned an ultra-competitive relay into a laugher. Monarch and the Lambkins ran away from the field early, but Fort Collins’ third leg ran away from Monarch. Gregory got the anchor baton clear of the Coyotes by 75 meters and never looked back as she cruised to another convincing state championship in a time of 9:06. Monarch was second in 9:13, Fairview finished third in 9:19. Gregory led the Lambkins to a second school record a few hours after a great 3200.

“We chose to lead off Devynn (Miller) just because we thought she had the potential to drop a 2:15,” Suppes said. “She did and we knew that if we could lead off with a 2:15 and throw in a couple 2:17s, we could give Gregory the type of lead that would help her.

“I didn’t expect it to be that big honestly,” he added. “She’s capable of running a 2:12 in the open. I knew she probably wouldn’t be able to run that fast coming off the two mile, so we knew we had to give her a lead, but we didn’t think the lead would be that good.”

Gregory, who also claimed the 5A crown in cross-country this past fall, has been known as an exceptional talent for years.

“I think anybody who knows her kind of expected this in a way,” Suppes said. “She’s been an amazing runner at the national level since she was a little kid. For her to come out and challenge 5A the way she is, it’s not a huge surprise to me or anyone whose been coaching distance in this area.

“I’ve always wanted to have a girl that, as a freshman, just comes out and destroys things.”

Gregory hopes to add to her already mighty credentials in the 800-meter run on Friday and 1,600-meter Run on Saturday. Just as importantly to the freshman, she wants to score more points for her team, the state title favorites.

“Right now, it’s just placing, because I want our team to win so bad,” Gregory said of her gameplan for the rest of the weekend. “I’m just trying to place as high as humanly possible.”

“The coolest thing about her is she’s all about the team,” Suppes said of her star.

Whether in individual races, relays, or team pursuits, Lauren Gregory is certainly a phenomenal talent.
