  • Notebook: ThunderRidge, Broomfield among many contenders in 5A girls hoops

    Broomfield ThunderRidge girls basketball
ThunderRidge and Broomfield have already played twice so far this season. Will they meet again when the 5A title is up for grabs? (Pam Wagner)

In a span of seven days earlier this month, ThunderRidge and Broomfield girls basketball went head-to-head twice. The second time, T-Ridge was ranked No. 1 in 5A, with the Eagles No. 2. Total margin of victory in the two games — both ThunderRidge wins — was 11 points.

Here’s the point: We’ll very likely be seeing these two teams matchup again come the postseason in Class 5A, and it may come at CU’s Coors Events Center.

ThunderRidge, which is still ranked No. 1, is now 7-1, with the lone loss coming to Fremd (Ill.) at the annual Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix. They already own wins over Fossil Ridge (last year’s runner-up), Holy Family (No. 3 in 4A), and Fairview (No. 8 in 5A). The Grizzlies, to be sure, are legitimate threats for a title at this point.

Broomfield, meanwhile, is having an incredible amount of early success after moving up from 4A this season. The Eagles were unbeaten all year last season before falling to Mesa Ridge in the 4A title game.

This season, they’ve won some big games — including a 19-point win over then-No. 6 Ralston Valley on Dec. 11, as well as a victory over a Denver East (5-2) team which has strung together three wins over out-of-state schools at a tournament in Las Vegas in the past week.

There’s also the 47-45 loss to ThunderRidge on Dec. 13 which shows what the Eagles (5-2) are capable of. Heading to break, they are ranked No. 4.

So these two teams may very well be on a collision course.

But others will have a say in this. 5A is as open as it’s been in years.

Grandview (current No. 2, and led by Michaela Onyenwere), Highlands Ranch (No. 3, and coached by the legendary Caryn Jarocki), and Monarch (No. 5, just won the Prairie View Tournament) are all contenders come tournament time. And that’s not even to say anything of a team like Regis Jesuit, which has struggled somewhat out of the gate, but can’t be counted out.

Alumni meet in NCAA volleyball championship

When Penn State beat BYU to win the NCAA volleyball championship on Saturday, it was Doherty vs. Longmont — at least as far as we’re concerned.

Haleigh Washington, the super talent out of Doherty, averaged 2.63 kills per set for the Nittany Lions as a freshman this season. She had three kills and four total blocks in the championship match.

Tambre Nobles (whose maiden name is Haddock), a 2011 graduate of Longmont, averaged 2.12 kills and 1.89 digs per set for BYU as a senior this season. She had seven kills and a team-high 12 digs in the championship match. Nobles was also a standout basketball player and track athlete in high school.

Penn State also features sophomore Laura Broerman of St. Mary’s.

CSU-Pueblo’s championship team loaded with local talent

It’s fairly often that Colorado’s high school athletes are maligned nationally.

So when CSU-Pueblo won the Division II national football championship on Saturday, it made a statement. Eighty-two of the 122 players on the ThunderWolves’ roster were from in-state high schools. Furthermore, 13 of CSU-Pueblo’s 22 starters hailed from in-state.

Yes, it’s Division II, and because of that pundits will thumb their noses at it, but this is an incredible achievement for this program, and says a lot about the state of Colorado’s talent. This is a team that was overwhelmingly — both in terms of overall numbers, and in terms of contributors — made up of local talent.

Colorado’s level of talent is so much better than it gets credit for nationally. This championship is just further proof of the type of kids produced by our high schools.

    Short stuff

    • How fast was girls swimming’s Coaches Invitational on Saturday? Valor Christian’s Brooke Stenstrom swam 23.49 in the 50 free, which beat the 4A state meet record. And she finished second to Rock Canyon’s Abigail Kochevar.
    • New Colorado State football coach Mike Bobo was introduced on Tuesday. He talked about the importance of recruiting in-state kids: “I believe (recruiting) starts in the state, in Colorado. This is our state, and we’ve got to start from top to bottom in this state and recruit the best high school football players year-in and year-out. Does that mean we’re going to get every high school football player in this state to come to Colorado State? No. But we’re going to try.”
    • Cherry Creek football finished at No. 64 in MaxPreps’ final computer rankings. The Bruins, who won the 5A championship, are the highest-ranked Colorado team. Valor Christian, the 5A runner-up, is the next-highest at No. 128, while Ralston Valley is No. 129.
    • Strasburg wide receiver Brian Nichols and Legacy tight end Logan Paulson are members of USA Football’s 2015 U.S. Select Team which will play an international game at Cowboys Stadium on Jan. 31. Meanwhile, Cherry Creek offensive lineman Jimmy Pallotto (under-18 team), Glenwood Springs quarterback Dante Sparaco (U17), Cherry Creek linebacker Santino Marchiol (U17) and Cherry Creek defensive lineman Omid Manshadi (U16) will also take part in the 2015 International Bowl as members of various national teams.
    • Resurrection Christian senior Zach Lish set the hockey program’s career scoring record.
    • Here’s a look at Denver East’s first year as a hockey program. The team is off to a 6-1-0 start.
    • The NFHS has completed a position paper out of its Concussion Summit Task Force. The ideas set by the paper will be discussed at a meeting in January. It states that “minimizing the risk of head trauma and concussion in all sports is a priority for the NFHS.”
  • Continental League has top three teams in 5A boys basketball rankings

    (Dennis Pleuss)

The Continental League has an early grip on the Class 5A boys basketball rankings.

With changes this week, league members now own the top three spots in CHSAANow.com’s poll. A total of five Continental teams are ranked this week.

The group is led by Regis Jesuit, which continued to lead the 5A poll. ThunderRidge remained at No. 2, and Chaparral moved up one place to No. 3.

Also ranked from the Continental League are No. 9 Mountain Vista and No. 10 Rock Canyon. Additionally, Legend received votes this week.

The Centennial League has three teams ranked — No. 4 Overland, No. 5 Eaglecrest and No. 8 Cherry Creek. No other league has multiple members ranked this week.

In 4A, Valor Christian and Conifer had both joined.

The Eagles joined at No. 8 following a 77-59 win over then-No. 3 Pueblo Central on Friday. The Lobos, meanwhile, are No. 10 after starting the season 8-0.

Elsewhere in 4A, Air Academy moved up two spots from No. 5 to No. 3, and Pueblo South jumped from ninth to fourth. Palmer Ridge, 6-0 this season, rounds out the top five after moving up from No. 8.

Longmont retained its perch on top of the 4A poll.

The three other No. 1 teams also stayed the same this week: Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

Montbello and Mountain Vista have joined this week’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A.

The Warriors are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week, while the Golden Eagles are No. 9. Both teams are 5-1.

That wasn’t the only change. Top-ranked Regis Jesuit and No. 2 ThunderRidge stayed put, but Overland moved up to No. 3 after a solid showing at an out-of-state tournament.

Chaparral moved into the top-5 following a big win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest on Friday. Chaparral is No. 4 this week, Eaglecrest is No. 5.

Cherry Creek bumped up three places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge also moved up to No. 8 and Rock Canyon remained ranked at No. 10.

In 4A, the changes continued. Pueblo Central spear-headed the movement with its jump to No. 3 this week, while Mead (No. 6), Palmer Ridge (No. 8) and Evergreen (No. 10) are all newcomers.

Colorado Springs Christian (3A) and Sanford (2A) both stayed put atop their respective rankings this week.

In 1A, top-ranked McClave lost to unranked Wiley last week. As a result, McClave dropped to No. 6 and Wiley is No. 10 in this week’s poll.

It also left a gap at the top, where Sangre de Cristo is now the No. 1 team. But voters were split, as a total of six teams received first-place votes this week.

Arickaree/Woodlin (No. 8) also joined the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Regis Jesuit now No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
Regis Jesuit is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A boys basketball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After last week’s big win, it was assumed that Regis Jesuit boys basketball would take over the top spot in Class 5A. Monday, the Raiders officially moved up.

Regis Jesuit received 15 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and had 159 overall points. This came on the heels of a 3-0 week to open the season, which included a win over preseason No. 1 Overland.

But Regis was far from the only mover. ThunderRidge also started its season 3-0, and has jumped from preseason No. 5 to No. 2 this week. The 5A poll also added four new teams: No. 7 Aurora Central, No. 8 Dakota Ridge, No. 9 Cherry Creek and No. 10 Rock Canyon.

Things changed in 4A, too. Longmont stayed put as the No. 1 team, but there are three new teams — led by No. 2 Golden, which had an impressive opening week, including wins over Vista PEAK and then-No. 6 D’Evelyn. Also joining are No. 6 Pueblo Central and No. 8 Air Academy.

In 3A, there’s another new No. 1 team. Colorado Springs Christian assumes the top spot there after Colorado Academy lost to Fossil Ridge’s JV team last week.

New to the 3A poll are Alamosa (No. 8) and Manitou Springs (No. 9).

The No. 1 teams stayed put in both 2A (Sanford) and 1A (McClave).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • ThunderRidge takes over atop 5A girls basketball rankings

With the preseason No. 1 losing earlier in the week, that left preseason No. 2 Broomfield as the presumptive No. 1.

Until ThunderRidge knocked off the Eagles on Saturday.

So when the dust settled on Monday morning, it was the Grizzlies (3-0) who assumed the No. 1 spot in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A girls basketball rankings. They got nine of the 17 first-place votes, and had 139 overall points.

Broomfield remained at No. 2 with three first-place votes and 129 points.

Regis Jesuit, which lost to Monarch last Tuesday, fell to No. 8. Monarch is No. 3 this week after going unranked in the preseason.

Also joining the 5A poll this week is No. 6 Ralston Valley.

Elsewhere, there are also new No. 1 teams in 3A (Pagosa Springs) and 1A (Idalia).

DENVER — Four years ago, after Pine Creek lost the Class 4A football state championship game 66-10 to perennial powerhouse Valor Christian, Eagles head coach Todd Miller wasn’t sure his squad would ever get another shot at the state title.

Those worries seem silly in retrospect.

Saturday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, the Eagles took another step towards establishing a dynasty of their own, beating the Longmont Trojans 45-20 to wrap up an undefeated season and a second-straight 4A state championship. It is the first time a Colorado Springs-area school has won back-to-back titles.

“This year we had a target on our back and I kind of understand what Valor and some of the other schools are going through,” said Miller in the midst of a raucous postgame celebration. “It takes a toll on you personally, it takes a toll on these kids. But you still chase it, because this is unbelievable.”

The outcome was never in doubt, as the Eagles dominated on both sides of the football right from the start. Only penalties — the Eagles had six for 81 yards in the first half — held them back. Even then, mistakes could only slow Pine Creek, not stop them.

After a missed field goal to start the game, Pine Creek’s JoJo Domann connected from 32 yards out on the Eagles second possession. Having officially gotten on the board, the Eagles picked up steam and started piling it on.

Led by quarterback Tommy Lazzaro and running back Josh Odom, the Eagles looked unstoppable as the first half unfolded. Lazzaro found pay-dirt from eight yards out to cap a four-play, 62-yard drive as time expired in the first quarter. In the second frame, it was Odom who shouldered the load, eventually finding the end-zone to make the score 17-0 Pine Creek just a few minutes into the second quarter.

Odom spent the game adding to his already impressive resume. The senior running back finished with 152 yards rushing at halftime and 284 for the day.

“Coach Miller just tells me, it doesn’t matter if you get ten or thirty carries,” said Odom, who averaged 14.2 yards per-carry. “Just as long as you put your head down and help the team be successful.”

Meanwhile, the Trojans were struggling to get anything going against an active Eagles defense. The Eagles shortened the field against Longmont quarterback Clint Sigg Jr., who had to settle for short out routes that the Eagles could swarm to.

The Eagles intercepted Sigg twice in the first half, and though neither directly led to Pine Creek scores, losing the field position battle meant tough going as the Trojans tried to find a break. Trying to simply run out the clock to end the half, the Trojans put the ball on the ground, and all-purpose threat JoJo Domann picked up the ball and returned it 19-yards for another Pine Creek touchdown.

Domann finished the game with 64 yards and one touchdown receiving to go along with his defensive exploits.

“We swarmed the ball. That’s our mentality,” said Domann, when asked what his team did well on defense. “Always get to the ball, get to the pile. Make plays and tackle well, and that’s what we did.”

“The boy’s a baller. He gets to go both ways and he does a great job at it,” Odom said of his teammate. “He’s definitely a high-level elite athlete.”

The second half opened in the same manner as the first – with a dominate Eagles defense frustrating the Trojans into turnovers, and Odom and company capitalizing. A six play, 79-yard drive by the Eagles ended with Odom’s second touchdown of the day. On Longmont’s next possession, junior defensive back Travis Meachum intercepted Sigg and took the ball to the house. Domann’s extra point made it 45-0 in favor of Pine Creek.

From there, Longmont was able to put some points on the board. Junior Conlan Berger scored two rushing touchdowns in the final frame and finished with 80 yards.

Sigg, in his final game for the Trojans, broke into the endzone as time wound down to make the final score 45-20.

Still, with the game already out of reach, a loud Pine Creek crowd spent the majority of the fourth quarter urging the Eagles to bring back the championship trophy.

For seniors of both squads, it was their final moment in uniform. And though it didn’t end the way Longmont head coach Doug Johnson wanted, he had only one message to his team.

“I love them. I’m super proud of our kids. We caught the best team on a day when we didn’t play very well,” said Johnson. “We knew we had to play well to be out there with them, but we just didn’t have our best today. I’m super proud of our guys, and super proud of our season.”

For the seniors of Pine Creek, a second straight championship was exactly the sort of legacy they wanted to leave behind.

“For this program, we’ve got some good guys leaving but we definitely have some good young guys coming up,” said Odom. “I’m eager to watch these guys play next year.”

Pine Creek has won its last 25 games.

“I’m going to miss them. They gave it their all,” said Domann of Pine Creek’s seniors. “We owe it to them to get back here next year, but I’m so grateful for all of them. This is for them.”

And as for next year, is it took early to start thinking about a three-peat?

“That’s on our mind,” said Domann. “But I’m going to celebrate this one first.”

DENVER — For defending Class 4A football champion Pine Creek, the path back to Saturday’s title game was paved with an undefeated record (13-0) and plenty of blowout victories.

Longmont (10-3), the team Pine Creek will face at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, had a few hiccups along the way.

But both head coaches recognize how special it is to make it this far, and are encouraging their players to soak it all in.

“It’s never old. I think even now, being able to have those experiences in the past, it’s even more enjoyable because you realize what it takes to get here,” said Pine Creek head coach Todd Miller Tuesday. “Four years ago, when we lost this game, I didn’t know if we could ever get back. We’ve been blessed by the hard work of these guys.”

“I get teary-eyed thinking about it,” said Longmont head coach Doug Johnson. “We had our backs pinned up against the corner, and we had to fight our way out. Our players are so loyal. They’re tougher than nails and I’m so proud of them.”

For Longmont (10-3), it’s their first title appearance since 1991, and it comes after an amazing comeback in the regular season. The Trojans started the year 1-3, and had to fight through injuries and plenty of adversity on their way to the playoffs.

“We literally patched things up as we went through the season waiting for guys to get back from injury,” said Johnson. “As we got the pieces in place we got better and better and better.”

Longmont was able to recover from their sluggish start thanks in large part to the play of quarterback Clint Sigg, who’s thrown for 11 touchdowns and run for another four.

“He’s such a loyal kid,” said Johnson of his senior quarterback. “We got him hit so many times throwing the ball early, dropped passes, ran wrong routes, and he never wavered in his belief. People say he’s been playing well as off late. He just had to wait for us kind of catch up with him in some phases.”

Despite the Trojans turnaround, Longmont has a tough task ahead of them against a ball-hawking Eagles defense that has picked off 17 passes and recovered another 11 fumbles. Sigg believes his team — which turned the ball over twice in their 21-14 victory of Broomfield in the semifinals last week — will have play perfect football Saturday to hang with Pine Creek.

“They have great athletes all around. A great secondary, a big physical defensive line,” said Sigg. “We just have to execute really well. We can’t give them any freebies.”

While this is the Trojans first championship appearance is over 20 years, defending champion Pine Creek is appearing in the title game for the third time in four years. The Eagles boast a versatile attack headed by quarterback Tommy Lazzaro, who’s thrown for 1,438 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season.

“Tommy gives us that (flexibility). The ability to throw and run it, this year he’s become a much better runner and competitor,” said Miller. “We’ve relied on that.”

The Eagles were able to do so many different things because, Miller says, their players are all capable of playing multiple positions, on both sides of the ball.

“We were able to develop six or seven lineman who can come in and play tight end. That allows to smash-mouth it a little bit,” said Miller. “We’ve been able to develop some younger guys that have come up and played wide receiver for us so we can go four wide.”

Miller highlighted senior running back Josh Odom as an example of his team’s selflessness and ability to adapt. Odom’s rushed for 1955 yards this season, his first as the team’s full-time halfback.

“Josh being versatile, being unselfish and playing defense last year, being a great linebacker for us,” Miller said. “We needed him to tote the rock for us this year, and him buying into that. Knowing that guys are going to stuff the box on us to stop him and our O-line has opened stuff up for us on the edge and throwing the ball.”

The last time these two teams faced each other in such a high-stakes matchup was the 2009 quarterfinals, which Longmont won 42-41. Since then, Pine Creek has established themselves as the team to beat in 4A, and Odom is looking forward to extending the Eagles recent string of success.

“I’m not sure it’s a legacy like Valor with their five state championships,” said Odom. “But if we keep going with what we’re doing with a great program and great kids, we can do something great.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 11 am at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium.
