  • No. 2 Pomona rallies in second half to edge Lakewood in 5A football

LAKEWOOD — Pomona senior Isaac Marquez scored four touchdowns Friday at Jeffco Stadium, but his game-ending interception sealed the deal for the Panthers.

Pomona, No. 2 in this week’s Class 5A CHSAANow.com football poll, survived a major scare against Jeffco League opponent Lakewood. The Panthers took a 34-27 victory with Marquez snagging an interception with 1:34 left in the fourth quarter.

“He (Marquez) has been our guy,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said. “He has done an incredible job for us playing both ways.”

Marquez had three short touchdown runs when Pomona (3-1, 2-0 in league) went into its ‘wildcat’ formation at the goal line. Marquez also caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Justin Roberts in the third quarter.

Despite the big game by Marquez, Lakewood (2-2, 0-2) actually held a 27-14 lead with 7:44 left in the third quarter when Lakewood senior quarterback Antonio Martinez hooked up for an 87-yard touchdown pass to senior Anthony Brown.

“It’s like the NFL. It can be positive. It can be negative. It doesn’t matter as long as you get the win,” Madden said. “It was a good fought battle. We didn’t play well early, but we learned something about ourselves. We won’t quit.”

Pomona turned the tide quickly scoring touchdowns 17 seconds apart to tie the game at 27-27 with 6 minutes left in the third quarter. After Marquez’s touchdown catch, Pomona junior linebacker Elijah Leyva scored a defensive touchdown when Lakewood junior Chris Reynoso had the ball stripped.

“I was just coming around the edge and Isaac Lopez (Pomona defensive end) popped it out and it just went right into my arms,” Leyva said. “I just ran it in.”

The Panthers took advantage of another Lakewood turnover to score the eventual game-winning touchdown. Lakewood’s punter Mao Niko fumble a snap and couldn’t get off the punt midway through the fourth quarter. Pomona took over on Lakewood’s 7-yard line. Marquez scored his fourth touchdown two plays later on a 1-yard run.

Marquez finished with 10 carries for 31 yards. Sophomore Cameron Gonzales was the workhorse for Pomona with 23 carries for 148 yards.

“I give Cameron his credit,” Marquez said. “He does the hard job. It’s a team effort.”

Memories for Pomona against Lakewood on the football field at Jeffco Stadium haven’t always been pleasant. In 2011 the Panthers swallowed a tough 29-23 loss in a 5A state semifinal game. The Tigers went on to the state championship game against 5A Jeffco rival Columbine.

Since that loss, Pomona has defeated Lakewood in non-league games in 2012 and 2013. The reformation of the 5A Jeffco League this season brought a little more importance for this year’s conference game.

Pomona heads up to its home field at the North Area Athletic Complex next week to face rival Arvada West at 7 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats got off to 2-0 start this season, but suffered a 58-6 loss to Ralston Valley last week.

“Lakewood is a very, very good football team. At the end of that day all that matters is we beat a good football team,” Madden said. “Now we line up and try to do it again next week. 3-1 feels pretty good.”

It was a second straight tough loss for the Tigers. Lakewood suffered a double-overtime loss to Chatfield last week.

“I told our kids that Chatfield was ranked in the top-10 and Pomona is ranked in the top-5. We battled both teams down to the end,” Lakewood coach Jeff Braun said. “We’ve got to clean up some mistakes and we’ll have a shot.”

Martinez threw a pair touchdown passes for Lakewood in the loss. Senior Marty Gonzales had a 62-yard touchdown run and senior Jake Romero scored a defensive touchdown in the first half for the Tigers.

Lakewood has to get back to work in a hurry. The Tigers square off against Bear Creek at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Jeffco Stadium. The Bears pulled off a thrilling 42-39 win over Chatfield on Thursday night for their first conference win of the season.

  • Lakewood softball claws out win against Ralston Valley

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood senior Reggie Splane picked a good time to get out of her self-proclaimed hitting slump.

Splane was just a triple away from hitting for the cycle going 3-for-3 from the plate with a pair of RBIs. The senior catcher helped lead the Tigers to an important 4-3 home victory in the Class 5A Jeffco League at Ray Baker Field against Ralston Valley.

“It’s huge,” Splane said of Lakewood’s first conference win. “It’s a big confidence boost for the whole team.”

Splane gave the Tigers (7-7, 1-2 in league) an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. She popped up a bunt earlier in her first at-bat in an attempt to move senior Shelby Belloni into scoring possession, but Ralston Valley (9-5, 2-1) dropped the foul ball.

“I had to move the runner because I messed up the first time,” Splane said of her third home run of the season. “I got the second opportunity and I had to make it work.”

Splane doubled in the third and singled during the Tigers’ two-run fourth inning. However, she didn’t get a chance to go for the cycle. Splane was due to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, but Ralston Valley’s late rally fell short and the Tigers didn’t need to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

“Everything started clicking today,” Lakewood coach Jennifer Coulson said. “Going 0-2 to start league we were playing almost afraid to lose. Today we came out and we weren’t afraid. We took care of what we needed to.”

Coulson started freshman pitcher Lyda Wiggins. Wiggins gave up five hits, but only got touched up for one run. Ralston Valley junior Maddy Smith had an RBI single in the second inning to cut Lakewood’s lead to 2-1.

“Lakewood’s pitchers did a great job,” Ralston Valley coach Wendy Davies said. “They didn’t allow us to do anything. They did a great job with placement.”

Sophomore Rayne Rodgers took the circle for the Tigers in the fourth inning. Rodgers only made one mistake, giving up a two-run home run to sophomore Alexa Samuels with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. The seventh home run of the season for Samuels trimmed Lakewood’s lead to 4-3, but Rodgers forced Ralston Valley junior Sydney Svejcar to fly out to centerfield two batters later to end the game.

“I’m so impressed with them (Wiggins and Rodgers),” Splane said. “You can’t see their age. They are so experienced. They come in and just do their job.”

Lakewood’s win over Ralston Valley leaves only Dakota Ridge, ranked No. 1 in this week’s 5A softball CHSAANow.com poll, with an unblemished 5A Jeffco conference record.

“When we get into league we tend to start beating each other up,” Coulson said. “We are just clawing on trying to get where we want to be. Everyone wants to be in districts.”

The 5A Jeffco League receives two automatic postseason berths this year. There will be 14 at-large bids handed out to complete the 32-team district field.

Lakewood begins a string of three straight league road games Tuesday afternoon at Columbine. Ralston Valley will try to get back on the winning track at Chatfield on Tuesday.

“It was just all in all was not a good game for us,” Davies admitted. “It was a rough day.”

  • Notebook: 5A softball only grows more confusing by the week

    Brighton Grandview softball
Brighton softball is among the many contenders in Class 5A. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

A little more than three weeks ago, Eaglecrest softball went to Dakota Ridge and easily handled the Eagles.

The final was 8-1 that day. They’d already beaten Douglas County, a quarterfinal team last season, as well as Rock Canyon, another quarterfinalist in 2013. No one is going to anoint a state champion after three games — but Eaglecrest sure looked like a favorite at that point.

Well, here’s the state of Class 5A softball at this moment: Dakota Ridge is ranked No. 1, Eaglecrest is now No. 9. And both are still very much in contention for the No. 1 overall seed come next month.

The classification has been crazy. Consider that there ceased to be an unbeaten team in 5A softball on Sept. 11 — less than three weeks into the season.

But what makes it all the more confusing is the sheer amount of parity.

Chaparral shot up to No. 5 in this week’s ranking after 10-consecutive wins. The Wolverines dropped their first two games this week.

After Eaglecrest’s 3-0 start, the Raptors lost to Brighton. Two games later, Brighton lost to Columbine. Columbine turned around and lost to Mountain Vista. Mountain Vista then fell to Cherry Creek. Two games after that, Cherry Creek lost to Lakewood, which then lost to Chatfield.

Dakota Ridge is currently the No. 1 team in the state. They have won four games in a row, but have the loss to Eaglecrest and another to Mountain Range. Two games after beating Dakota Ridge, Mountain Range lost to Fossil Ridge.

Another 5A contender: Mountain Range. (Pam Wagner)

“When the committee sits down to figure out head-to-head, it’s going to be: ‘What week?’” joked Bud Ozzello, CHSAA’s assistant commissioner who administers softball. “That’s how good this classification is.”

So who will end up as the No. 1 seed? Who knows. What’s clear is that there’s no clear-cut favorite.

Dakota Ridge has a win over Legend, which beat Douglas County, which has beaten Columbine, which has topped Brighton, which owns a win over Grandview, which beat Eaglecrest — which, of course, beat Dakota Ridge.

The classification has become a snake eating its own tail.

Ultimately, what this regular season is proving is that it likely won’t even matter much who gets the No. 1 overall seed. Or the Nos. 8, 9 or 10, for that matter.

Because in order to reach the state tournament, and move on once there, “You’re going to have to battle,” Ozzello said.

    • Berthoud football is off to a 3-0 start, and ranked No. 10 in 3A this week. This may be a case of those special graduating classes that come through schools at one time or another. According to John Hall of the Berthoud Surveyor, this year’s junior class was a stellar bunch dating to their youth, including winning the Northern Colorado Championship.
    • Due to low numbers, Deer Trail will forfeit its game to Peetz this week. Deer Trail was down to five guys.
    • Pinnacle’s football team beat Jefferson 55-18 last week, and in doing so snapped an 18-game winning streak. Their last win came in Sept. 2012.
    • Castle View’s Savannah Heebner threw a perfect game in a 14-0 win over Highlands Ranch last week. She struck out 10 in five innings, and is now 10-1 with a 0.77 ERA in 11 games. She has four shutouts.

LAKEWOOD — Chatfield football hasn’t lost its flair for the dramatic at Jeffco Stadium.

The Chargers edged Class 5A Jeffco League rival Lakewood, ranked No. 9 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A football poll, in double-overtime fashion Friday night. Chatfield came away with a 42-41 victory when an attempted trick shovel pass by Lakewood on a extra-point hit the ground after being thrown toward the line-of-scrimmage.

“Ball on the ground, block, tackle, kids sprinting off the field,” is how Chatfield senior Sean O’Dell described the play. “It was just pure joy. I’m just so happy.”

Chatfield (2-1 overall, 1-0 in league) had a pair of last-second wins last season. That trend of putting playing close games has followed the Chargers into this year’s campaign. Horizon knocked Chatfield out of the ranking last week with a come-from-behind 42-40 win.

    Chatfield Lakewood football
Lakewood junior Eric Gonzalez (83) fights for extra yards as he is tackled by Chatfield senior Lucas Gunkel in the second quarter Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss)

“I don’t know what it is with us, but the last two years our games come down to the wire all the time,” Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin said. “I’ve never been so proud of a group of guys. We’ve been riddled with so many injuries. Our kids just kept fighting. They never gave up.”

The first half of what was the Chargers’ homecoming game was pretty tame and ended with Chatfield leading the Tigers 7-3.

“This week we had a lot of defensive-minded practices to have a response after that Horizon game,” O’Dell said. “They stepped up big time. Giving up just three points at halftime is big time.”

The action got wild in the second half. The lead changed hands six times in the final 24 minutes of regulation time. Lakewood (2-1, 0-1) scored with 13.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard pass play from quarterback Antonio Martinez to Mao Niko to tie the game at 28-28.

Lakewood only needed to kick the extra point to take the lead, but a low snap saved Chatfield. Tigers couldn’t get the kick off and for the second time during the 5A Jeffco doubleheader Friday at Jeffco Stadium overtime would be played.

Columbine blew a late lead and ended up having to beat Bear Creek 43-42 in double-overtime in the 4 p.m. game earlier in the day.

“We are very comfortable,” O’Dell said of playing in tight games. “We call ourselves the ‘Buzzer Beater Crew’. Last year we had two big game-winners late.”

    Chatfield Lakewood football

Lakewood and Chatfield exchanged a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs in the first overtime period and each kicked their extra points to send the game into a second overtime. Chatfield senior quarterback Kyle Winkler tossed a 10-yard touchdown to senior Brayden Gilbert and Becca Meares kicked the extra point to give the Chargers a 42-35 lead.

The Tigers answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Chris Reynoso, but the trick play on the shovel pass to end the game with a 2-point conversion failed.

“Our guys just blew up the middle. That’s all I saw,” McGatlin said of the final play of the game that concluded at nearly 11 p.m. “All I know is I saw the ball on the ground and people running past me.”

Chatfield won’t have much time to celebrate the victory. The Chargers have a short week playing at 6 p.m. next Thursday night at Jeffco Stadium against Bear Creek.

Lakewood will try to rebound after its first loss of the season against Pomona at 4 p.m. next Friday back at Jeffco Stadium.

  • Lakewood joins 5A football rankings after last week’s big win

Lakewood, coming off a big win over Montrose, has joined the Class 5A football poll this week.

The Tigers beat Montrose, then ranked No. 2 in 4A, on Saturday. Monday, they entered CHSAANow.com’s ranking at No. 9.

Elsewhere in 5A, Valor Christian remained the unanimous No. 1 team, but things changed behind the Eagles. Cherokee Trail (No. 2), Pomona (No. 3) and Grandview (No. 4) all moved up one spot this week after Cherry Creek, last week’s No. 2, fell to Pomona.

Creek is No. 5 this week, and is followed by Fairview, Ralston Valley, Regis Jesuit, newcomer Lakewood and Overland.

The 4A ranking also added one team in No. 10 Longmont, which was ranked in the preseason. Pine Creek maintained its spot at No. 1. Pueblo South moved up to No. 2 after Montrose’s loss, and Denver South bumped up to No. 3. Montrose is fourth this week, and Vista Ridge is fifth.

In 3A, Erie joined at No. 10. Lutheran continued its stay at No. 1, and Delta remained just behind at No. 2. Discovery Canyon bumped up to No. 3 after its big win over Holy Family last week.

The 2A poll added No. 8 Bayfield, while 1A added No. 7 Cedaredge and No. 9 Platte Canyon. Granada (No. 7) joined the 8-man ranking, while 6-man added No. 8 Cheyenne Wells and No. 9 Flagler.

The No. 1 teams in each of those classifications remained the same. Those are Brush, Paonia, Dayspring Christian and Stratton/Liberty, respectively.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: Central (G.J.) ends its 21-game losing streak

It had been more than two seasons since Central (Grand Junction) had won a football game. Friday night, the Warriors ended a 21-game losing streak with a 41-32 win at Vista PEAK in Class 3A.

The Warriors led 20-8 in the second quarter, but it quickly turned into a back-and-forth game. Vista PEAK took a 32-27 lead in the third quarter, but Tonka Littlefawn scored on a 36-yard run to give Central the lead for good at 34-32 with 9:54 to play in the game.

Central then sealed it five minutes later when Littlefaw added a 15-yard score to make it 41-32 following a bad snap on a punt.

Littlefawn finished with three scores. Justin Eller and Kian McAdam also had touchdowns.

The Warriors’ last win came 46-26 at Hinkley on Nov. 3, 2011. It was on the same field — at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

Regis Jesuit, for the second week in a row, found itself locked in a battle late in the fourth quarter. This time, the result went the Raiders’ way.

A week after losing 27-14 to No. 2 Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit had to put away rival Mullen, a team that refused to go away. The game featured seven ties or lead changes.

Mullen led 21-20 at halftime and 34-27 late in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit tied it at 34 with less than a minute to play in the third.

Alex Barnes then scored on a 14-yard run to give Regis the lead at 41-34 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, and the Raiders added another score six minutes later.

But Mullen wasn’t done. Jovan Tafoya hit Ryan Manning on a 40-yard pass for a touchdown with two minutes to play, and the Mustangs drove down for one final chance in the final minute but couldn’t convert on fourth-and-12 from inside the 20.

    3A: (9) Roosevelt 20, Loveland 15

Loveland seemed to have pulled the upset — but Roosevelt scored the winning touchdown with 14 seconds left.

Loveland led 15-14 at the half, and it stayed that way for nearly the entire second half. But Roosevelt got the ball with 3:18 to play, and slowly marched its way down the field. Then, with 19 seconds left and facing third down and goal at the 1, the Roughriders’ Christian Majzack scored the winning touchdown.

Adrian Pastrana then had a game-sealing interception on Loveland’s ensuing drive.

The two teams combined to fumble 15 times, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald.

    2A: (5) Florence 13, (2) Faith Christian 7

This one came down to a goal-line stand at the end. Florence held firm, and held on to win.

Faith Christian had four shots at the end zone from inside the 10, but Florence didn’t bend. The last stop came with one second remaining.

“We took a timeout just to regroup them,” Florence coach Jeremy Nix told ColoradoPreps.com‘s Scoreboard Show. “The boys … just bowed their necks and got after it. We rode the ‘D’ that far, so we were at the point where we could’ve called a timeout to try to save some time, but we had confidence in them and they showed up at the end there.”

Discovery Canyon rallied from a 20-17 deficit at halftime to pull off the upset on the road.

“Tonight was a little bit of a heart-attack game,” Discovery Canyon coach Shawn Mitchell told the Scoreboard Show afterward.

The Thunder actually led 14-0 early before surrendering the lead in the second quarter. But they then reeled off 28-straight points in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

“It was a little bit of a roller-coaster ride for the coaches, to say the least,” Mitchell said.

The third quarter scoring spree was sparked by Blake Lawrie’s touchdown return on the opening kick of the second half.

“Boy, that really helped us,” Mitchell said. “That kind of got spirits back up again, because I think at the end of the second half, they were wondering, ‘Oh, what just happened?’ I think it was, ‘OK, we’re back where we need to be.’”

It was the second-consecutive big win for Discovery Canyon, which beat Silver Creek in Week 1.

    8-man: (9) Springfield 36, (4) Hoehne 6

Springfield pulled off the upset at home.

“Both of us grounded and pounded against each other, just kept hitting and hitting and we knew one of us was going to wear out,” coach J.J. Quick told the Scoreboard Show after the game. “We knew our game was to do what they normally do: just keep pounding and banging up front.”

    Notables

    • Cedaredge upset 2A No. 10 Olathe on Friday night. The final was 2-0, and no it wasn’t a forfeit. Weather played a role, with the lone points coming on a safety from a snap through the endzone.
    • Rifle, No. 5 in Class 3A, beat Jefferson 64-6. The Bears have outscored their first three opponents by a combined 182-19.
    • Lakewood, a 5A team, knocked of 4A No. 2 Montrose 47-35 on the road. Montrose kept trying to creep back into the game, but Lakewood seemingly scored a touchdown to answer each score. We’ve got photos of the game here.
    • Fountain-Fort Carson beat Legacy in overtime, 20-14.
    • Durango trailed 14-0 but then scored 34 unanswered points en route to beating Aztec (N.M.) 34-28 on the road.
    • Montrose and Grand Junction exchanged leads five times before the half on Friday night. The Tigers trailed 22-20 at the break, but would go up 50-22 with 10:42 to play. They’d have to hold on, though, in winning 58-45. At one point, Fruita cut it to 50-45 with 2:25 to play.
    • Aspen running back Ryan Fitzgerald had 343 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries in his team’s 23-14 win over Steamboat Springs.
    • In 8-man, No. 6 Merino beat No. 5 Simla 18-16.
    • Alameda edged Skyview in overtime, 56-55. Nick Wotton had five touchdowns and 297 yards in the losing effort.
    • 2A No. 8 Lamar beat 1A No. 2 Centauri, 20-8.
    • Valley’s Victor Delgado rushed for three touchdowns as his team beat Fort Lupton 31-0.
    • Rocky Mountain Lutheran’s Zach Schlittenhart had 231 yards and four touchdowns rushing on just 11 carries as his team beat Justice 64-28.
    • Lutheran beat Frederick 52-7. Quarterback James Willis threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Eight of his passes went to Joshua Clausen, who had 157 yards and two touchdowns. Through two games, Clausen has 376 receiving yards. It’s very early, but he’s on pace to break the single-season receiving yardage record, set just last season by Fairview’s Sam Martin (1,860).
