  • Patterson leads Pueblo South girls basketball in win over Pueblo County

PUEBLO — Some girls high school basketball players do not have games like this their entire careers.

Shannon Patterson of Pueblo South is having nights like this on a regular basis.

The senior poured in 26 points powering the defending Class 4A state champion Colts to a convincing 76-30 win over Pueblo County in the South-Central League opener for both teams Tueday night at the Hornets’ Nest.

“Coming in people were saying we were not the same team we were last year,” said Patterson, who also had six 3-pointers. “We just wanted to prove them wrong and show them that we could be better than last year’s team and not to doubt us.”

South (11-1), which is ranked No. 3 in the latest CHSAANow.com poll, won its seventh game in row. Pueblo County (9-5) was no match for the Colts, who made 14 of 20 3-point attempts.

“I wasn’t surprised with how well South played, I just thought we could play with them and obviously I was wrong,” Pueblo County coach Mark Villegas said. “We missed some shots early and they hit a couple of big 3s and it just snowballed from there.”

Kendra Jesik and Patterson each had five points giving the Colts a quick 10-3 lead just over one minute into the game.

The Colts kept pushing the tempo and then with 4:44 left in the first half Patterson put on a clinic.

The 5-foot-6 Patterson scored her team’s final 12 points of the second quarter, the final six on back-to-back treys. Patterson had 21 first-half points and the Colts were up 37-15 at intermission.

“I think she is the best player in 4A,” Villegas said of Patterson. “She provides ball pressure and she takes your best offensive player out of the game and she scores at will right now.”

Patterson, who came into the game averaging 23.4 points a game, drew praise from South coach Shannan Lane. Patterson has signed to play for Colorado State University-Pueblo next year.

“Shannon’s been solid,” Lane said. “She has stepped up her game from last year and she has had to. Everybody knows we are trying to fill those points we lost from Mikala (Gordon). We didn’t know where we were going to get those points and Kendra has picked it up a bunch. I really didn’t know if Shannon, who was scoring 16 points a game last year, could average almost 10 more points a game this season and she has. She’s playing at a different level. Her speed, her quickness and she’s just one heck of an all-around player.”

Gordon, a 5-foot-9 post player, averaged 17 points a game last season and was the Colts’ floor leader. Gordon is now playing for Colorado Christian University.

As good as Patterson and Jesik have been, they don’t work alone. Guard Jaylan Duran is scoring 12.3 points a game and 6-foot post player Sissy Hall is at 6.6 points. The juniors had nine points each against Pueblo County.

“The key for us is just to play as a family and trust each other,” Hall said. “If we do that, I’m confident we can make another run at winning state again.”

Duran had a game-high 19 points on the strength of five 3-pointers in the Colts’ 66-42 victory over D’Evelyn in the Class 4A state championship game at the Events Center at the University of Colorado last March.

South has won five girls basketball state championships in school history in 1979, 1992, ’93, ’94 and last year.

Fossil Ridge, unbeaten and with a number of impressive wins under its belt thus far, is the new No. 1 team in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys basketball poll.

The SaberCats, off to a 10-0 start, edged Denver East — which had held the No. 1 spot since the preseason — despite having one fewer first-place vote. The Angels are No. 2 this week.

Regis Jesuit moved up one spot to No. 3, while Cherry Creek made the week’s biggest gain by going from No. 10 to No. 4. Overland rounds out the top 5.

Eaglecrest is sixth and is followed by Arapahoe, Mountain Vista, Monarch and Grandview.

The 4A ranking continued to be led by Valor Christian and added two new teams: No. 7 Pueblo South and No. 10 Denver South.

3A added Aspen (No. 8), while 2A got a new No. 1 team in unbeaten Ignacio. The 1A ranking added Primero (No. 10).

  • Pueblo South’s Naro aiming for wrestling history

PUEBLO — The history of high school wrestling in Pueblo is storied. Since 1949, wrestlers from Pueblo have captured 69 individual state championships. But none of those wrestlers had the opportunity Isaac Naro has.

Naro, a sophomore at Pueblo South High School, has the chance to become the Steel City’s first four-time state champ. South has won a Pueblo-best 23 individual state wrestling champs.

“I do like the pressure because it gives me more mental toughness to practice harder and train harder because everybody is coming at me now,” Naro said. “I know I have to work even harder to get back to that state championship match and make history.”

Naro put himself in this position with his stunning performance at the Class 4A state tournament last February at the Pepsi Center in Denver. He concluded his improbable state tourney run by shocking Pueblo Central’s Sonny Espinoza 5-2 in the 132-pound finals.

“It is just crazy,” said Naro moments after he beat Espinoza. “I’m just so excited right now. I did my best out there and listened to my coaches. This is just incredible.”

Espinoza had a 2-0 season record against Naro before state. He beat Naro 17-2 at the Pueblo East Invite in December 2012 and 7-3 last January in a dual.

Espinoza, now a freshman wrestler at the University of Northern Colorado, is Pueblo’s all-time prep wrestling wins leader at 163.

“The more I look back on it, the more I realize how cool it was to be there and Sonny was a very good wrestler,” said Naro, who finished with a 28-5 record last season. “I lost to him twice before that and it was a good feeling to beat him in the finals where it counted the most.”

This season Naro hasn’t missed a beat.

He is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A at 138 pounds by On The Mat and is sporting a 12-1 record. South also is ranked No. 4 in 4A and is vying for its fourth state wrestling crown.

The Colts won state in 1997, 2004 and 2005 — all in Class 4A. South also has finished second in state three times in 1999 (Class 5A), 2006 (Class 4A) and 2012 (Class 4A).

“I’ve had a good season, but I know I can get better,” Naro, 15, said. “I can’t take anything for granted. I need to work harder and harder each day at practice.”

Naro’s only blemish this season was a 5-3 overtime loss to Rocky Mountain’s Danny Murphy in the finals of the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction last month.

“This year the biggest thing is Isaac is healthy,” veteran South coach Jerry Sisneros said. “He had a lot of nagging injuries last year. Plus, he had a great offseason lifting weights and he’s stronger and a year older. He’s just a very good wrestler who also keeps himself in every match.”

Marcus Martinez, a senior who is ranked No. 2 at 132 pounds, concurred with his coach.

“Isaac is a great teammate,” said Martinez, a state runner-up at 120 pounds a year ago. “He always works hard in the room and brings intensity. He just has some moves that are really unique that you don’t see very much and they are hard to defend, especially when you are on the bottom. In our room, everybody is focused on doing what they can do to help us win state. It would mean so much if we could win state.”

Naro has been honing his wrestling craft since he was 5 years old.

“I love how wrestling teaches you mental toughness and teaches you life lessons,” the 5-foot-8 Naro said. “I love getting in there and having fun with my friends. Hopefully, if I keep it up I will be able to get a college scholarship for my wrestling skills. That would be cool.”
