  • Playoff football roundup: Columbine runs over Grand Junction

    Columbine ran Grand Junction right out of town.

    The seventh-seeded Rebels got three rushing touchdowns from Jeremy Aparicio and easily handled No. 10 Grand Junction, 41-7, in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

    Aparicio had scoring runs of 58, 4 and 1 yards, while Michael Tait passed for a score and rushed for another. Austin Norton had a 30-yard touchdown run and caught Tait’s 28-yard scoring toss.

    The Rebels will play at No. 2 Valor Christian in the quarterfinals. The Eagles exploded for 28 second-quarter points in pulling away from No. 15 Ralston Valley. Up just 14-6 after the first quarter, Valor scored on the first play of the second frame and never looked back.

    It was 42-6 at halftime and a 49-20 final.

    Valor quarterback A.J. Cecil was 19-of-23 for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Christian McCaffrey rushed 13 times for 121 yards and two scores and also caught six passes for 110 and two more touchdowns. The carries were the most McCaffrey has had since he rushed 11 times against Fountain-Fort Carson on Sept. 27.

    Ralston Valley scored two late touchdowns after recovering three-consecutive onside kicks in the fourth quarter.

    We’ll have at least two rematches in the 5A quarterfinals: No. 1 Fairview hosting No. 8 Pomona and No. 3 Cherry Creek hosting No. 6 Cherokee Trail.

    Fairview topped No. 16 Douglas County 45-17 on Friday. Knights quarterback Anders Hill had five total touchdowns, four passing. He tossed scores to Steve D’Epagnier (twice), Cam Frazier and Sam Martin. Fairview also got a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown from Carlo Kemp.

    Douglas County was in the game in the first half, trailing 14-10 after the first quarter, and 21-17 later in the second, but Fairview’s Jonathan Swartzwelter nailed a 47-yard field goal just before the half to give Fairview a spark heading to the locker room.

    When the night ended, Fairview had scored the game’s final 24 points.

    In the quarters, the Knights will get Pomona, a team they beat 33-30 on Oct. 18. Pomona beat Chatfield 49-35 on Friday. (Find a full recap of that game here.)

    Cherry Creek, meanwhile, beat No. 19 Overland for the second time this season with a 49-14 victory Friday. The Bruins got 21 second-quarter points to make it a 35-7 halftime margin.

    Cherry Creek plays Cherokee Trail in the quarterfinals. The two teams played a tight one on Oct. 4 — a 28-27 Creek win.

    Cherokee Trail easily handled No. 11 Mountain Range, 41-7, on Friday. Quarterback Aric Johnson was 14-of-19 for 171 yards and two scores through the air. He also rushed for 84 yards and two more touchdowns.

    Junior running back Cameron Smith had 163 yards and two touchdowns.

    No. 5 ThunderRidge beat No. 12 Doherty, 56-35, on Friday. The Grizzlies could get a rematch, as well: No. 5 Regis Jesuit and No. 20 Grandview play Saturday. Should Regis win, it would give ThunderRidge a chance to avenge its only loss of the season, which came Sept. 27 to the Raiders.

    Class 4A

    Fifth-seeded Pueblo South was in trouble heading into the fourth quarter against No. 12 Longmont.

    The Colts trailed 27-17 following a 15-point outburst from Longmont in the third quarter, but rallied with 21 fourth-quarter points for a 38-27 win.

    Trailing 27-24 with 5:34 to play, South converted a fourth-and-6 and went on to score the go-ahead touchdown. The Colts stopped Longmont on fourth-and-13 on their ensuring drive, and sealed the game with a score a few plays later.

    In other 4A games, No. 3 Pine Creek beat No. 14 Pueblo West, 35-18, and No. 2 Monarch handled No. 15 Vista Ridge, 62-28.

    Class 3A

    No. 7 The Classical Academy looked to be in control. But, late in the third quarter, a Conifer touchdown cut the Titans’ lead to 14-6. Then, with six minutes to play in the fourth, Conifer made it 14-12.

    A stop of a two-point conversion attempt on the try gave TCA its first postseason victory in school history, 14-12, over the tenth-seeded Lobos.

    In Friday’s other 3A game, No. 3 Roosevelt cruised past No. 14 Frederick, 47-13, to move to the quarterfinals.

    Higher seeds were 13-0 in Friday night’s football playoffs.

  • 4A football poll adds Windsor and Denver South

    Windsor and Denver South have both returned to the CHSAANow.com 4A football poll.

    The Wizards are ranked ninth this week, while Denver South is No. 10.

    Likewise, the 3A poll added two new teams: Conifer (No. 9) and The Classical Academy (No. 10).

    Montrose (4A) and Coronado (3A) continued to lead each poll.

  • Football roundup: Monarch handles Broomfield in 4A

    Monarch made a statement to rest of 4A football on Friday night: Yep, they’re still a force in the classification.

    The third-ranked Coyotes handled hard-charging and eighth-ranked Broomfield, 48-12, behind an onslaught of points in the first half.

    “We feel pretty good about beating those guys,” Monarch coach Phil Bravo  told ColoradoPreps.com’s Built Ford Tough Scoreboard Show. “They have such a good team and a good program with a rich tradition. When you get a chance to beat ’em, it feels real good.”

    Senior running back Ethan Marks had well over 200 rushing yards, while quarterback Jay MacIntyre and Kidd Soole also got heavily involved in the offense.

    “We were getting them from all different vantage points and executed real well offensively,” Bravo said.

    Four weeks ago, Monarch also had a big halftime lead against Montrose, but surrendered 33 second-half points in a 39-34 loss.

    This time around, at halftime, “I wrote on the board, ’33 second-half points.’ That’s what we gave up to Montrose,” Bravo said. “I said, ‘I don’t want that in the second half.’ Our kids played really, really well in the second half defensively. We got ’em three-and-out, we got the ball and went up and scored and then held ’em again. We got that clock running early in the fourth quarter, and it felt really good to play well in that second half with a big lead at halftime.”

    Elsewhere, No. 5 Pueblo South beat Pueblo West 31-21.

    “They’re a good football program and they’re well-coached,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told the Scoreboard Show. “They play a brand of football that’s physical and they like to get after you. Our kids, they wanted that challenge and they stepped up to it.

    “They had an opportunity to get back to where we want to be — and that’s well known around Pueblo as far as the football program is concerned. Hopefully, now, we’ll get a little recognition around the state level, too.”

    4A’s top-ranked team, Montrose, rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to beat No. 6 Durango 14-10.

    In 5A, No. 1 Valor Christian rolled Rock Canyon 56-6. Quarterback A.J. Cecil threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. Five different Eagles scored on the ground, including Christian McCaffrey, who carried just three times for 76 yards. He was also on the receiving end of two of Cecil’s scoring passes.

    Quarterback Anders Hill threw for five touchdowns — all in the first half — as No. 2 Fairview handled rival Boulder 69-3.

    No. 4 Cherry Creek had to stave off a late rally from Eaglecrest to seal a 41-34 win.

    In 3A, No. 8 Silver Creek took care of No. 5 Mead 45-13 in a highly-anticipated game. Mead had been unbeaten going into the contest, but Ben Sjobakken threw two touchdown passes to pace the Silver Creek offense.

    Tenth-ranked Rifle beat No. 7 Delta, 52-27.

    1A’s No. 2 team, Limon, finished the regular season a perfect 9-0 with a 42-13 win over Crowley County. Kerigan Kappel had more than 200 yards, and Gavin Liggett added 115.

    “I was really pleased with the balance we had with different guys carrying the ball,” Limon coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Scoreboard Show.

    Winners in 8-man’s crossover games included No. 4 Simla, No. 5 Caliche and No. 8 Sargent.

    Peetz upset No. 2 Arickaree in a 6-man crossover, while No. 5 Otis beat Briggsdale.

    Playoffs begin next week for 5A, 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man teams. Brackets come out Sunday.

  • Football poll adds Mountain Range in 5A; Coronado on top in 3A

    Mountain Range, 7-1 this season, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in Class 5A.

    The Mustangs, ranked No. 10, are riding a four-game winning streak, including a 22-16 decision against Rocky Mountain last week. Their lone loss this season came at Grand Junction on Sept. 20.

    Valor Christian remained atop the 5A ranking with 19 of the 22 first-place votes. Fairview, which got the other three first-place votes, stayed in the No. 2 spot following its big win over Pomona, and continued to be followed by No. 3 Regis Jesuit, No. 4 Cherry Creek and No. 5 ThunderRidge.

    Columbine stayed in sixth this week, while Cherokee Trail bumped up two spots to seventh. Pomona remained in eighth and Grand Junction moved up to ninth after beating 4A No. 1 Montrose.

    Despite the loss, Montrose remained atop the 4A ranking. Pine Creek moved up to No. 2, jumping Monarch, which fell to No. 3.

    Coronado is now atop the 3A poll after Palisade’s loss to Delta. Discovery Canyon is second and Palisade dropped to third.

    Delta joined the ranking at No. 7, as did Roosevelt (No. 9) following its win over then-No. 3 Silver Creek. Silver Creek dropped to No. 8 this week.

  • Grand Junction, Broomfield join respective football polls

    Grand Junction was idle last week. No matter, the Tigers have rejoined this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in Class 5A.

    Grand Junction (5-2), last ranked Sept. 9, is No. 10 in the poll. The Tigers took the spot vacated by Arapahoe after the Warriors were upset by Lakewood last week. Up next for GJ: Unbeaten Montrose, which is No. 1 in 4A.

    Valor Christian continued to lead the 5A poll, and received 22 of the 23 first-place votes. Fairview remained in second, and Regis Jesuit in third. Cherry Creek is fourth and ThunderRidge fifth after the two schools swapped places.

    Columbine (No. 6) and Chatfield (No. 7) also stayed put, while Pomona moved up to No. 8. The Panthers, coming off a win over rival Ralston Valley, have a big showdown with Fairview on Friday afternoon.

    Montrose is a unanimous pick atop 4A, and Monarch remained in that poll’s No. 2 spot. Pine Creek bumped up to No. 3, Falcon is fourth and Pueblo South rounds out the top 5.

    Conifer joined the 3A poll. The Lobos are No. 9 following consecutive wins over ranked opponents Lutheran, D’Evelyn and Rifle. Rifle, No. 3 last week, dropped to No. 10 this week.

    Gunnison (No. 10) is the lone newcomer to 2A, while 1A added Yuma (No. 9) and Platte Canyon (No. 10). 8-man added Sargent at No. 10, and 6-man added Otis (No. 5).

  • Resurgent Pueblo South football now 5-1 after going 3-17 last two seasons

    PUEBLO — The Pueblo South football team was a combined 3-17 in 2011 and 2012. Those numbers are distant memory this season.

    The resurgent Colts are 5-1, including 3-0 atop the Class 4A Foothills league, and are ranked No. 8 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A football poll. Pueblo South’s lone loss was a 17-7 defeat to Falcon on Sept. 5.

    “This season has been a lot of fun,” said Pueblo South head coach Ryan Goddard, who is in his fourth season guiding the Colts. “The kids have come a long way and they have put in a lot of work. They believed in what we were teaching them and it just took off for them.”

    After a slow start, Pueblo South’s offense has come alive in wins over Palmer Ridge (31-8), Mesa Ridge (40-0) and Pueblo Centennial (56-20).

    Quarterback Nathan Spinuzzi has been a catalyst for the Colts. The junior has passed for 1,167 yards and eight touchdowns and he also has rushed for 428 yards and six more scores.

    “We are taking care of the ball on offense,” Goddard said. “Nathan has also thrown the ball really well this year and to throw the ball well you have to have good receivers. We also have had balance with a strong running game.”

    South’s top receivers are Devin Valdez (17 receptions, 373 yards), Dennis Ramos (18 receptions, 355 yards) and Isiah Pannunzio (8 receptions, 197 yards). Valdez has a team-high four touchdown catches.

    “I think we have great leadership,” the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Spinuzzi said. “People believed what we could accomplish this year and last year we were just going through the motions.”

    The Colts are far from one-dimensional.

    Senior running back Garrett Krage has a team-best 555 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also has 12 catches for 141 yards.

    “This season is 360 degrees different from last year,” the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Krage said. “It all started with our preparation in the summer. Our seniors this year played through the 2-8 season and 1-9 season. We didn’t want to have those results again. We made sure we were good leaders. We made sure we got work done in the summer hoping it would pay off. Now that it has been paying off we need to continue to work even harder. This season feels like what football should feel like. I know as a senior I want to help our team come out on top and reach its goals.”

    As good as Pueblo South’s offense has been the Colts’ defense has exceeded all expectations. It is only allowing only 9.8 points per game.

    “Our defense has been playing very good, especially our defensive line,” Goddard. “We have just had a great team effort on defense and the guys are just flying around and getting after people.”

    Krage is playing outside linebacker this season, and is thrilled to be part of the Colts’ swarming unit.

    “We take a lot of pride in not giving up many points,” Krage said. “We have almost all our athletes playing on defense this season and that has made a big difference.”

    South’s defense will have a tough test at 7 p.m. Friday when the Colts host Canon City in a huge Foothills League game at Dutch Clark Stadium. The Tigers are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league.

    “Our first goal every year is to go out and win the league,” Goddard said. “Our kids know this is big game and we are just focused on what we have this week.”

    Senior Mitchel Chavez, a free safety, is anxious to see what his team can accomplish against the Tigers.

    “This season has been amazing,” Chavez said. “I can’t even describe how it feels. Everything has changed. Our team has been a lot more focused and determined this season, especially on defense. We have just been taking things week by week. So, our focus this week against Canon is to go 1-0.”

    Krage concurred with Chavez.

    “We understand how important this game is,” Krage said. “Everybody is really up for this game and we just want to keep things rolling.”

  • Palisade takes over atop 3A football ranking

    Palisade edged then-No. 1 Rifle last Friday after rallying from a 27-14 halftime deficit. Tuesday, Palisade is on top of CHSAANow.com’s Class 3A football poll.

    The Bulldogs received all 13 first-place votes in moving up from No. 2 taking over at No. 1. Rifle dropped to third. Unbeaten Coronado, which has the most wins in the state at 7-0, is second.

    The 3A ranking added Roosevelt (No. 10) this week.

    In the 5A poll, Fairview has moved up to No. 2 from No. 3.

    The Knights (5-0) are 5A’s lone remaining unbeaten team, and got one first-place vote. Valor Christian got the other 23 and remained atop the ranking.

    Regis Jesuit is third this week, and is followed by No. 4 ThunderRidge and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

    Columbine rejoined the 5A ranking at sixth after its wild win over then-No. 2 Chatfield. Chatfield dropped to seventh this week.

    Arapahoe is eighth, Pomona is ninth and Cherokee Trail fell to tenth after its loss to Cherry Creek last week.

    Montrose, idle last week, remained in 4A’s No. 1 spot. Monarch moved up to No. 2, and Standley Lake is No. 3 this week. That ranking added Pueblo South at No. 8 and Durango at No. 10.

  • Regionals lead to changes in boys golf rankings

    All but one boys golf regional completed play last week, and that made for a number of changes to CHSAANow.com’s boys golf polls this week.

    The No. 1 teams — Regis Jesuit (5A), Valor Christian (4A) and Alexander Dawson (3A) — stayed put, but a total of seven new teams joined the rankings. In 5A, Fossil Ridge (No. 8) and Grand Junction (No. 10) joined; 4A added Coronado (No. 7), Steamboat Springs (No. 9) and Thompson Valley (No. 10); while new to 3A were Eaton (No. 5), and Aspen (No. 7).
