GOLDEN — The Jeffco School District held its 29th annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony Wednesday.

The Class of 2014 includes longtime principal John Musciano and coaching legends Ed Stevens and Don Osse. Jeffco has inducted 88 members into its Athletic Hall of Fame since the hall’s inception in 1986.

    John Musciano

Musciano’s nearly 30-year career in Jeffco started at Bear Creek High School as a teacher along with coaching basketball and baseball. He later became the principal at Bear Creek before moving on to being the principal at Pomona High School and later Standley Lake High School.

“We always talked about the importance of athletics,” Musciano said. “Extracurricular activities are the glue to complete the academic experience.”

    Ed Stevens

Stevens was a graduate of Arvada High School in 1970. He began his teaching and coaching career at Alameda High School in the mid-1970. His major coaching success came in the 1990s at Wheat Ridge High School. Stevens coached the Farmers to state football titles in 1994 and 1996, along with guiding the baseball team to a state championship in 1992.

“His influence over his players was remarkable to watch,” said Tom Dowd, former assistant football coach under Stevens. “What I learned from Ed was the love and loyalty his players had for him.”

    Don Osse

Osse is credited for the tremendous growth in track and field in Jeffco during the 1970s and 1980s. He began the first organized Jeffco track club in 1972. He was a teacher, track coach and cross country coach at Lakewood High School for nearly 20 years. Osse passed away of brain cancer in 1985, but influenced many future Jeffco teachers and coaches.

“He was more than a track coach,” said Bill Wright, current track coach at Lakewood High School who was a student and assistant coach under Osse. “He was a philosopher. A teacher.”

  • Durango relies on Dunlap in 4A baseball win over Wheat Ridge

    (Zach Marburger)
    (Zach Marburger)

AURORA — Durango’s dugout was chattering from first pitch, clearly excited at the chance to extend its postseason success with a victory against Wheat Ridge.

The Demons kept up the chatter all afternoon long. But ultimately it was the quiet composure of starting pitcher and senior Blake Dunlap that powered Durango to a 4-1 victory over the Farmers Friday afternoon in the second round of the Class 4A baseball state tournament.

With the wind blowing in heavily from left field, the game was destined to become a pitcher’s duel. In that environment, Dunlap thrived, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run to earn the victory as Wheat Ridge remained undefeated in the double-elimination style tournament.

“Great job by Blake Dunlap, going all seven for us,” said Durango coach Rob Connington after the game. “Our pitching has been real strong lately. They’ve really stayed within themselves, and I’m real proud of what they’re doing.”

Senior Luke Wagoner took the loss for the Farmers despite pitching well over seven innings. Two of the four runs he allowed were earned, as he was victimized partly by the Farmers’ defense behind him.

In the bottom half of the third inning, after a single by Durango third baseman Lawrence Mayberry and a Dunlap walk, the Demons sent catcher Isiah Mayberry to the plate. Mayberry rolled-over a soft groundball that was misplayed, plating two runs to make it 2-1 in Durango’s favor.

The Farmers finished with three errors in the contest. For their part, the Demons made two errors, but Dunlap was always able to prevent major damage.

Wheat Ridge would draw first blood in the top of the third thanks to an RBI single by designated hitter Damian Padilla that scored first baseman Diego Garcia.

But Durango responded right away, helped in part by the Farmers’ misplays. After the two-run error and another single, center fielder Tyler Worely singled in two more Demons to give Durango some breathing room.

Not that Dunlap would need it. A ten-minute delay caused by malfunctioning sprinklers in between the third and fourth innings put the Demons’ momentum in jeopardy, but Dunlap wasn’t fazed. He set the Farmers down one-two-three in the fourth.

It came as no surprise to Connington that his veteran squad, loaded with nine seniors, would keep their cool during the unexpected halt in play.

“That was kind of a crazy deal. Reminded me of the lights at the Super Bowl a couple of years ago,” Connington said. “But they kept their head and kept the momentum in our direction.”

Wheat Ridge would put together one more serious charge, loading the bases with two-outs in the top of the fifth before Dunlap got Farmers’ left fielder Chase Powell on a groundball to escape the jam.

The Farmers kept fighting. Center fielder Willie Harris made a perfect throw to gun down Durango first baseman Dayne Rawley at third to end the fifth inning and keep the game within striking distance. But the Demons late rally petered out before it could even start. Fittingly, Dunlap finished off his gem with a one-two-three inning that included a strikeout of Padilla to end the game.

“It was a great day. We’ve had a couple good weekends. Hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow,” Connington said. “Not sure who we’re going to play, but I’m sure it will be a tough team. It’ll be exciting.”

“We can celebrate for a few minutes but we’ve got to get after it and get ready to prepare ourselves for tomorrow’s game.”

Wheat Ridge will try and bounce-back against either Evergreen or Green Mountain in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m. Durango will face the only other team yet to lose in this tournament, Niwot, Saturday at 3 p.m.

DENVER – A 13-7 lead for the Ponderosa Mustangs was slowly being eaten away. The defending Class 4A boys lacrosse champions, the Wheat Ridge Farmers, had found themselves in quite the hole, but had shown before that they had the talent to climb out of it.

But Patrick Tierney’s Mustangs had too much resolve and in the end, would hold on 13-11 to take the 4A title in what many would call a major upset in Colorado high school lacrosse.

“If you watch, you knew that they needed each other,” Tierney said of his team. “They worked hard the whole game. They turned to each other, they passed when they had to and they didn’t try to take it on themselves.”

It was all the more impressive considering the Farmers scored 54 seconds into the contest to take a quick 1-0 lead. After winning their first two playoff games by a combined score of 22-12, a quick start was anything but a surprise.

The 1-0 score would hold for over seven minutes before the Mustangs were able to shake their cobwebs and get the ball by Farmers goalie Jensen Makarov. Ponderosa’s ability to tie the game also came as little surprise.

Where the surprise came in was how the Mustangs converted another goal 20 seconds and yet another with 14 seconds left in the first quarter — both at the hands of senior captain Blake Bruner — to take a 3-1 lead.

“It’s a game of runs and we knew that coming in,” Bruner said. “Everyone contributed so much and that got our momentum going and we just kept with it and we knew we would get some runs and they would get some too. We just made sure to get ours going real quick.”

The Farmers wouldn’t quit and battle back to cut the lead down to one goal thanks to goals by John Roach and Dylan Mechling. But just as it appeared Wheat Ridge had seized some momentum, the Mustangs went on a run of four straight goals to build a 7-3 lead.

The momentum had clearly shifted and it showed when Makarov lost the ball trying to clear it, allowing Austin Bullock to scoop it up and put it in the net for the Mustangs’ seventh goal of the game. Once again, the Farmers tried to fight their way back, but Ponderosa struck with another run, scoring four goals in a span where Wheat Ridge could only muster one. Junior Jack Griffin had three-straight goals for the Mustangs to increase their lead to 11-6.

“We definitely didn’t have anything to lose, they’re going to 5A next year and we sent them to 5A in style,” Griffin said. “I felt like we were the underdogs and I’ve played Wheat Ridge a number times and never beaten them before so I think our team just wanted it more today.”

The scoring for the Mustangs slowed to a crawl in the fourth quarter, just at Wheat Ridge redoubled their efforts. Ponderosa held a 13-7 lead with 6:49 to go in the game, but would soon get put back on their heels. As the seconds ticked away, so the did the Mustangs’ lead. John Roach added another and senior Tyler Knott added two more as the Farmers pulled to within two goals.

The momentum appeared to be with the Farmers, but with 52 seconds left in the game Roach was called for a cross-check, giving the Mustangs a one-man advantage for the remainder of the game. They were able to control the ball for that last minute, taking down arguably the best 4A lacrosse team of all-time.

“I think we had enough players on the field that when we had a chance we executed,” Tierney said. “And by executing, we were able to keep them at a distance but we got into some trouble with penalties and that late in the game it was tough to fight off. But it was a great win, I’m so happy for them. They worked hard for it; they worked hard for three years, most of these guys.”
