Four teams join new-look 5A baseball ranking

Chatfield joined the 5A baseball ranking at No. 6 this week. (Pam Wagner) Just as seemingly the entire classification heads out of state for spring break tournaments, the Class 5A baseball rankings got a facelift. Four new teams joined CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and others made big jumps.
Chatfield (No. 6), Columbine (No. 7), Arapahoe (No. 8) and Fairview (No. 10) all joined the 5A poll. The teams are a combined 11-1 to start the season.
ThunderRidge continued to lead that 5A poll, following an 8-7 win over then-No. 3 Grandview at Coors Field last week.
No. 2 Rocky Mountain also got a win at Coors Field last week, beating then-No. 7 Chaparral. The Lobos stayed put in second. Behind them, though, the change started.
Ralston Valley moved up three places from No. 6 to No. 3, and Regis Jesuit bumped up one spot to No. 4. Grandview rounds out the top five.
Three of the four newcomers are next, and then Cherry Creek is No. 9 after a tough 0-2 week. Fairview rounds up the top 10.
The change didn’t stop with 5A. In 4A, Montrose took over the top spot following its win over Valor Christian on Friday. Valor, last week’s No. 1 team, fell to No. 3. Windsor, 5-0 to start the season, is No. 2.
The 4A ranking added No. 7 Delta, No. 8 Niwot and No. 9 Palmer Ridge this week.
The No. 1 teams stayed the same in 3A (Holy Family), 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Stratton).
The 3A poll added No. 7 University and No. 8 The Classical Academy.
Teams Nos. 8-10 are all new in 2A: Peyton, Hotchkiss and Ignacio.
The lone newcomer to the 1A ranking was No. 9 Weldon Valley.
Because of the large number of out-of-state games this week, and thus, a lack of in-state competition, there won’t be new baseball polls until April 7.
Complete rankings for all classes are below.

Columbine joins 5A girls soccer poll at No. 9

Holy Family remained the No. 1 team in this week’s 3A girls soccer ranking. (Pam Wagner) Columbine, off to a 6-1-0 start, has joined this week’s Class 5A girls soccer ranking.
The Rebels were 2-0-0 last week with wins over Liberty and Dakota Ridge. They are No. 9 in CHSAANow.com’s poll this week.
Elsewhere, the 4A poll added Windsor (No. 10), and 3A added Faith Christian (No. 6).
The three No. 1 teams stayed the same this week. Those are Mountain Vista (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A).
The next new rankings will be out on April 7, due to the relatively light in-state schedule caused by spring break.

3A boys basketball semifinal roundup: Holy Family steps up to challenge
AIR FORCE ACADEMY — The Holy Family boys basketball team knew it had a tall challenge — literally — against Colorado Springs Christian in Friday’s Class 3A boys semifinal.
The Tigers stepped up to the challenge, mainly by hitting their outside shots as they defeated the Lions 59-51 to advance to Saturday evening’s state championship game.
“We shot well from the outside,” Holy Family senior forward Devlin Granberg said, understating the case.
He was among the chief contributors, hitting a trio of 3-pointers en route to 11 points.
The game plan wasn’t to avoid the Lions’ tall front line.
“We just took what they gave us,” Granberg said. “I’m just fortunate they fell.”
He got some help. Luke Golter had three trifectas, all coming in the second quarter as the Tigers pulled away, on the way to 15 points.
“Luke’s been filling it,” Tigers coach Pete Villecco said.
“Coach says we have good shooters in the gym,” Granberg said, and they have the green light to shoot from the outside when open.
The Tigers realize any championship opponent will be a challenge.
“They’ll be ready to go (Saturday) night,” Villecco promised.

Colorado Academy 66, Faith Christian 46
The Mustangs ran away with the game in the second quarter, extending a 16-9 lead to 30-12 in a 3 1/2-minute span.
Colorado Academy was especially effective from beyond the arc, connecting on 11 3-pointers. Jack Buckmelter and Justin Bassey tied for game-high scoring honors with 20 points apiece.
“We’ve got four great shooters,” Mustangs coach Steve Hyatt said, counting his son Christian and Chris Kuelling among them.
“We just thought if we do what we do we’d be OK,” said Buckmelter.
It was Colorado Academy’s third victory over Faith Christian this season.
“I’ve got all the respect in the world for them,” Steve Hyatt said of the Eagles’ program.
Colorado Academy and Holy Family met once during the regular season, with the Tigers winning by four at their house.
“I think we’re going to be a lot better prepared,” Buckmelter said.

3A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Holy Family jumps out early and cruises

(Diane Schuck) AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Last year in the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament, Holy Family was given a lesson by Eaton.
The Tigers, who came in as the top-seeded team in this year’s edition, have a different mind-set.
They jumped out to a 14-0 lead in Thursday’s quarterfinals and kept building as they advanced to the semis with a convincing 70-40 victory over Brush.
“We were definitely prepared,” junior guard Luke Golter said.
Were they ever. He was among the leaders in that aspect.
Golter was electric from the outside, nailing a trio of 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points.
“We’ve been talking about playing in the big arena,” Tigers coach Pete Villecco said of preparing for the Great 8 at the Air Force Academy.
Holy Family had played in the previous two state tournaments but is still seeking the state title. They got off to a strong start not only by scoring quickly.
“We told the kids to find their feet,” Villecco said of focusing on shooting form.
They also did it by forcing Bruch into misses on its first nine tries.
“Win every possession – that’s what our mind-set is,” Golter said.
Golter washardly the only offensive contributor for the Tigers. Ryan Willis had 18 points, 12 coming from beyond the arc, and Chris Helbig added 11.
“We have so many weapons,” Golter said.
Holy Family’s boys and girls teams both come in as the top seeds in the Great 8. That, Velleccio said, is great for the school.
“The spirit in the building is at an all-time high,” Velleccio said.
It’s given both teams motivation. Golter said that what the boys team needs to keep the run going.
“Just play with the same swagger,” he said of the goal of keeping the confidence level up.
The Tigers play Colorado Springs Christian at 5:30 in Friday evening’s first boys semifinal.
“Our expectations are that we’re going to work our tails off,” Velleccio vowed.
Colorado Academy 67, Moffat County 62
The Class 3A boys state basketball tournament kicked off with a barnburner at the Air Force Academy Thursday morning.
Colorado Academy overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to overtake Moffat County down the stretch 67-62.
The lead changed hands three times in the final minute and a half with Chris Kuelling’s 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining giving the Mustangs the lead for good. Colorado Academy sealed the win with a steal and basket by Christian Hyatt with seconds remaining.
Jack Buckmelter led the Mustangs with 28 points, offsetting a matching performance by Moffat County’s Kort Hathhorn.
Colorado Springs Christian 69, Denver Science & Tech 49
With three scorers in double figures, the Lions stretched a 32-19 halftime lead into a comfortable victory.
Justin Engesser paced the Lions with 17 points; Dante Fewell added 12 and Nic Doherty 11.
Deron Harrell led all scorers with 19 for the Knights while Nathaniel Cox chipped in 16.
Faith Christian 50, Manitou Springs 30
The Eagles led throughout, holding an eight-point halftime advantage which grew to 37-25 entering the fourth quarter.
Two players were particularly dominant on the offensive end, Gabriel Hegarty scoring from the outside and Grant Harkness doing damage underneath. Hegarty led all scorers with 13 points; Harkness chipped in 12 and pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
Chase Megyeri paced the Mustangs with 12 points and five boards.
Faith Christian goes up against Colorado Academy in Friday’s late semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Manitou Springs and Moffat County play a 1:15 p.m. consolation game.
