    Class 5A

    Front Range League (9 teams)

    Boulder Panthers

    Coach: Collin Knowles
    2013 record: 8-7
    Returning lettermen: 17
    Leading seniors: Brandon Jacobs, M; Ian Oden, A; Vito Lecesse, D; Zach Brode, M; Ben Jacobson, LSM;
    Top juniors: Jack Heyman, A;
    Sophomores to watch: Connor Fox, A; Cleveland McCarty, D; Jonny Colletta, G (Freshman)

    2014 outlook: Five of top six scorers return in 2014 and experienced on defense. Ian Oden 39/34 and Brandon Jacobs 36/7 return with more scoring expected from Zach Brode (senior, midfield) and Connor Fox (sophomore, attack). Freshman Jonny Colletta will compete with senior Reed Morrison for the starting goalie position. Vito Lecesse and Ben Jacobson bring senior leadership to a strong veteran defense.

    Chatfield Chargers

    Coach: Kevin O’Brien
    2013 record: 6-8
    Returning lettermen: 18
    Leading seniors: Eric Potts, M; Ross Steward, M; Josh Heidrick, LSM;
    Top juniors: Michael Callahan-Harris, M; Connor Aycock, M; Jeremy Thompson, M; Jared Kelleher, M; Jacob Larsen, A; Lucas Gunkel, A; Dylan Thompson, D; Tanner Lewis, Defense
    Sophomores to watch: Nick Lovell, A; Jordan Alexander, G;

    2013 highlight: Chatfield had a strong finish to its 2013 season and played some eventual playoff teams pretty tough in its last couple games. Although the Chargers missed the playoffs, they still look back at 2013 as a successful campaign.

    2014 outlook: Chatfield is looking forward to a strong 2014 season. The team has a lot of potential as its returns 18 varsity players. “Looking forward to see how our team fares against some very strong programs we have on our schedule,” O’Brien said.

    Columbine Rebels

    Coach: Matt Plitnick
    2013 record: 12-3
    Returning lettermen: 14
    Leading seniors: Anthony Sanfilippo, A; Larry Munson, M; Tyler Goodwin, M;
    Top juniors: Landon Kramer, M; Lucas Leyba, LSM; Dylan Compton, FOGO; Ian Lewis, D;
    Sophomores to watch: Justin Gonzales, M; Nick Stasch, A;

    2013 highlight: Columbine was able to produce eight all-state players, including two All-Americans. Winning back-to-back league and Littleton Cup championships was the highlight of 2013 for Columbine.

    2014 outlook: Youth is the word for 2014. Many talented, yet unproven players dot the roster. The schedule remains challenging with key out of state games against Mercer Island (Wash.), Bainbridge Island (Wash.) and Lincoln (Ore.). If youth can gain experience, the Rebels look for a three-peat in the Jeffco League.

    Dakota Ridge Eagles

    Coach: Mike Thumim
    2013 record: 8-7
    Returning lettermen: 24
    Leading seniors: Davis Sebald, M; Tyson Butler, M; Ryan Schneider, M; Kaden Hummel, M;
    Top juniors: Alden Erickson, D; Sean Arfsten, D; Joe Brown, M/FO, Taylor Davis, A; Duncan Okubo, A; Tanner Pauley, G;
    Sophomores to watch: Cody Hill, A; Matt Moscati, LSM;

    2013 highlight: “Last year our first as a varsity and missed the playoffs by one game,” Thumim said. “We had two overtime losses.”

    2014 outlook: “We are returning all 10 starters from last year and are a junior-class heavy team,” Thumim said. “We expect to compete for a playoff spot this year and hope to surprise many teams as we will be overlooked being so new. But, we have some kids getting recruited and have a lot of experience.”

    Fairview Knights

    Coach: Michael Flood
    2013 record: 5-10
    Returning lettermen: 20
    Leading seniors: Sean LaVine, D; Kipp Planchard, D; Josh Drake, D; Bobby Johnson, A; Blake Josenhans, M;¸ Matt Wantz, M;¸ Avi Becker, M;
    Top juniors: Luke Miller, D; Andrew Yi, M; Steele Mercer, M; Connor May/Attack
    Sophomores to watch: Quinn Carrigan, A; Rylan Squirrell, M; Daniel Rahn, M;

    2013 highlight: “In 2013 we opened the season with an overtime victory against Highlands Ranch,” Flood said. “We followed up that game with an overtime win against Palmer. Both exciting finishes happened on our home turf in front of our fans.”

    2014 outlook: “We have a seasoned group of seniors who are ready to take care of business this coming season,” Flood said. “Our guys have put in more work this offseason than ever before. With most of the team coming back, we expect to have a strong presence in our league and in the state.”

    Fossil Ridge Sabercats/Fort Collins Unified Lacrosse

    Coach: David Shigekane
    2013 record: 11-4
    Returning lettermen: 12
    Leading seniors: Bradley Sobotka, A; Ben Braley, D; Robin Kelley, D; Cole Purdy, D; Baily Hoffman, M; Carter Nuttall, M; Tate Stuart, M; David Lund, A
    Top juniors: Kevin Schultz, M; Cam Castle, G; Trey Jouard, M; Trevor DeBaere, A; Joe Cribari, M
    Sophomores to watch: David Kravec, D; Alex Winkler, G; Ryan Hsin, M

    2013 highlight: “We started off with a four-day spring break trip, where we played three games and had three practices. We went 1-2 and the team was worn out and not satisfied,” Shigekane said. “This helped us prepare for the rest of the season. With all the weather, we had to finish the season with playing six games in nine days, against very tough competition. The players rose to the occasion and played their best lacrosse, winning all six games and received a No. 4 (seed) in the playoffs.”

    2014 outlook: “We graduated about 15 seniors and lettermen,” Shigekane said. “We are a young team. I am excited for the players to learn about leadership, community and hard work. With these behaviors in place this team will experience a great season and life-long friendships.”

    Lakewood Tigers

    Coach: Eric Seelbach
    2013 record: 6-8
    Returning lettermen: 14
    Leading seniors: Adam Zimmerman, A; John Stauffer, D;
    Top juniors: Will Swartz, A; Jared Taha, M; Braden Birney, M/FO, Sam Copper, D

    2013 highlight: The 2013 season was Lakewood’s very first season of competition. The team worked hard to gel all season, and began to make great strides by the end of the competition to enter 2014 on a number of high notes. The team found an identity on offense, and will look to pick up momentum in other areas of the team from that success.

    2014 outlook: The Lakewood Tigers return a solid core of players at every position for the 2014 season. The team’s top three scorers — Adam Zimmerman, Will Swartz, and Braden Birney — are all primed for important responsibilities in leadership on the offensive side of the ball, while defensive leadership will come from John Stauffer and Sam Copper. Looking to improve on its record from the 2013 season, the Tigers have set their sights on earning their first-ever playoff berth in 2014.

    Monarch Coyotes

    Coach: David Auday
    2013 record: 10-5
    Returning lettermen: 13
    Leading seniors: Will Simonson, A; Troy Naudain, A; Mark Allen, D
    Top juniors: Connor Johnson, G; Max Wiesner, M; Phil Bubernek, M
    Sophomores to watch: Andrew Zweirs, M; Chad Kreuzer, M

    2013 highlight: “We completed our ninth year in a row of being a playoff team,” Auday said.

    2014 outlook: “We have one of the best goalies in the state in Connor Johnson and a good, D;” Auday said. “We have some talented short sticks in Max Wiesner, Phil Bubernek, Chad Kreuzer and Andrew Zweirs.”

    Prairie View Thunderhawks

    Coach: Dave Pucul
    2013 record: 2-14
    Returning lettermen: 9
    Leading seniors: Austin Barnhill, LSM; Bryce Robinson, G; Cory Paterson, M
    Top juniors: Caleb Strand, M; Adrian Aragon, A; Christian Jacoby, D
    Sophomores to watch: Jake Zaroff, G; Josh Fielder, M

    2014 outlook:
    It’s hard to tell what this season may hold for the Thunderhawks. “This is my first season coaching at PVHS, and what I see is a group of young men working hard in the offseason, playing box lacrosse, and practicing on their own time,” Pucul said. “Because there is not an established feeder system in the area, most players started in the ninth grade, but what they lack in experience, they are willing to make up for in hard work. This year we will focus on building a team, constructing a community, and starting traditions within the Thunderhawk program.”

    South Suburban League (9 teams)

    Colorado Academy Mustangs

    Coach: Randy Colley
    2013 record: 13-4
    Returning lettermen: 14
    Leading seniors: Sam Sweeney, LSM; Jack Thomas, A; Trevor Pratt, D; Jack Griswold, M; Matt Cole, D;
    Top juniors: Tyler Kelly, M; Zander Naes, G;
    Sophomores to watch: Winston Palmeri, A; Mac Mease, A;, M; TK Kidder, D; Carson Pratt, LSM

    Denver East Angels

    Coach: Sean McCarthy
    2013 record: 7-9
    Returning lettermen: 15
    Leading seniors: Jake Sawyer, D; Griffin Heller, A; Jack Matthews, A; Kellen Self, A; Joey Cowperthwaite, G;
    Top juniors: Sam Bierman, M; Sid Torrigino, A; Connor Lewis, A; Taylor Bombadiere, LSM
    Sophomores to watch: Max Bragdon, M

    2013 highlight: The Angels did well enough to earn the final seed in the state 5A playoffs. They faced the No. 1 seed, Cherry Creek, in the first round. The team lost but not without giving the top ranked team a tight 9-4 battle. East had strong wins against Heritage and Grandview that certainly helped push a bid for the playoffs.

    2014 outlook: With 14 returning lettermen and a core senior class, 2014 looks bright for the Angels. This is the first season that there will be more upperclassmen on the varsity roster than underclassmen. The season that many of the players worked very hard to acquire is finally here. The team, coaches and players, are excited for the opportunities that last year’s success has brought into the current season, and look forward to building on the solid foundation that they have built.

There is an all-new coaching staff this year, and a new athletic director, so it might be fair to call this a ‘rebuilding year’ but we are strong at defense and goaltending, and excited for the season.”

    LAKEWOOD — There would be no high marks given out for style points Thursday night at Green Mountain High School.

    D’Evelyn clawed its way closer to a third straight Class 4A Jeffco League girls basketball title by gutting out a 31-30 victory against Green Mountain in a defensive struggle. The Jaguars control their own destiny in winning the conference title with two league games remaining.

    “A win is a win. That’s a huge win,” said D’Evelyn senior Malia Shappell, who made two free throws with 4.1 seconds left to give the No. 9-ranked Jaguars (16-4, 11-1 in league) a one-point lead.

    D'Evelyn Green Mountain girls basketball
    Green Mountain junior Cassie Allen (3) attempts to break the full-court pressure from D’Evelyn senior Katie Cunniff, left, and Lexi Reed during the second half Thursday night. (Dennis Pleuss)

    Shappell hit nothing but the bottom of the net on the first free throw, but had to watch the ball trip around the rim before falling through on the go-ahead free throw.

    “The first one was easy,” said Shappell, who scored a game-high 14 points. “The second one they got in my head, but I hit it. That is all that matters. I don’t care what it looked like.”

    Green Mountain (17-4, 10-2) had to go the length of the court in 4.1 seconds. The Rams were able to inbound the ball to midcourt and swing the ball to freshman Delaney Bernard. Quickly after Bernard caught the ball she fouled by Shappell. The Jaguars had fouls to give before the Rams were in the bonus.

    The referees huddled for a moment to determine if Bernard was in the act of shooting.

    “Heck yes,” D’Evelyn coach Chris Olson said when asked if he was concerned the Bernard would be awarded free throws. “That is why I was yelling ‘on the floor, on the floor’ as soon as she (the ref) blew the whistle. You trust in that situation that (the refs) realize it was on the floor, but sure I was nervous.”

    The foul was ruled on the floor and the Rams had possession with just .2 seconds left on the clock. A tip-in attempt by Green Mountain senior Kelli Van Tassel at the buzzer came up empty and D’Evelyn players celebrated getting one step closer to another conference title.

    “We just couldn’t pull it out in the end,” Van Tassel said. “We got too comfortable with our lead and couldn’t get a shot off. We had some bad turnovers late.”

    The Rams went inside to senior MacKenzie Schaller and junior Brooklyn Gaffner in the third quarter to take the lead after trailing 16-13 at halftime. The Jaguars were focused on covering Van Tassel and Bernard on the outside.

    “(Green Mountain coach Rudy Martin) is a great coach and they have a lot of really great players,” Olson said. “They were spreading us out because we were trying to cover the shooters and they went inside.”

    D’Evelyn drove hard to the lane in the fourth quarter to score the final eight points of the game to take the victory. Senior Mallory Seemann made the only field goal for the Jaguars in the final quarter. It was enough as D’Evelyn went 6-for-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

    “I said at halftime if we had to win 29-27 that is what we’ll do because we are that good,” Olson said. “We just fought and clawed. I was so proud.”

    D’Evelyn is scheduled for a trio of home games next week to finish out its regular season. All games are set for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

    The Jaguars faces Wheat Ridge (Feb. 18) and Arvada (Feb. 20) before a non-league tilt against Rock Canyon, the 10th-ranked squad in the 5A CHSAANow.com poll this week.

    Green Mountain preps for the postseason with a road game at Conifer on Feb. 18.

    “Conifer is a good team and we need to make sure we take care of,” Van Tassel said. “So we are just going to get ready for them. We’ll learn from this and use it as motivation.”

    Pairings for the 4A state tournament will be released Feb. 23. Opening round games will be played Feb. 25.

    LAKEWOOD — It’s not how your start, it’s how you finish.

    That was the mantra for Green Mountain’s girls basketball team Friday night. The Rams started off slow, trailing rival Golden 23-22 at halftime. However, the second half was a totally different story as Green Mountain (16-3, 9-1) stormed to 67-46 victory to stay in the hunt for a Class 4A Jeffco League title.

    “I think hitting some threes in the third (quarter) got us a little bit of a lead where we could relax a little bit,” Green Mountain coach Rudy Martin said. “I just think the strong suit of this team is we’ve got some tough kids and good mental toughness. I think we got better as the game went on.”

    Green Mountain freshman Delaney Bernard (4) puts some defensive pressure on Golden senior Madison McFarlin (14) during the first half Friday night. Bernard had a strong shooting night with six 3-pointers in the Rams’ 67-46 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)

    Freshman Delaney Bernard (22 points) sunk a trio of 3-pointers in the span of two minutes during the third quarter to get some separation from the Demons (10-9, 6-4).

    “Delaney hit some really big threes at the beginning of the half that really started us and got us going,” said Green Mountain senior Kelli Van Tassel said.

    Golden closed the third quarter strong with senior Jessica King scoring eight of her 13 points. The Demons actually closed to within 43-42 in the final seconds of the third period.

    In danger of dropping a game at home for only the second time this season, the Rams turned it on in the fourth quarter. Offensively and defensively, the Rams were superb in the final quarter.

    Green Mountain outscored Golden 22-4 in the final eight minutes. Van Tassel led the way pouring in 11 points in the quarter. She finished with a game-high 23 points, which included going 14-of-17 from the free-throw line.

    “Anytime Kelli gets to the line that much she is having a good game,” Martin said. “When she plays well we are pretty good.”

    Golden senior Haley Blodgett was the only Demon to score in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-3 senior finished with a team-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers.

    “We played pretty well the whole game, but that last quarter was kind of rough,” Blodgett said. “We’ve just got to stick together as a team and put it behind us.”

    King (13 points) and Madison McFarlin (12 points) both had solid games for the Demons before fouling out.

    Golden and Green Mountain will both get a shot next week against defending league champion D’Evelyn. The Jaguars (14-4, 9-1) had won 37 straight conference games dating back to the 2010-11 season. However, Evergreen (13-6, 8-2) upset the Jaguars 61-57 on Friday night to end D’Evelyn’s league-winning streak.

    Golden hosts D’Evelyn at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 11 in the first game of a girls/boys varsity doubleheader. The Demons gave the Jaguars a tough league game Jan. 10. D’Evelyn edged Golden 34-27 in a defensive battle.

    “I’m definitely leaning on that last game and how much better I can play and show (D’Evelyn) what I’m made of,” said Blodgett, who had just six points in the loss to D’Evelyn. “It’s our coaches vs. cancer event so we should bring a pretty big crowd. It will be spirited and a good event. There will be a lot of excitement and energy in our gym.”

    Green Mountain gets it second chance to knock off the No. 8th-ranked team in 4A at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 on the Rams’ home court. The game Thursday at Green Mountain will likely determine the conference champion.

    First, the Rams hit the road to face Evergreen at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 11.

    “It’s going to be a good week,” Martin said of facing Evergreen and D’Evelyn. “We are really looking forward to it.”

    LAKEWOOD — Golden sophomore Ryan Blodgett could still crack a smile despite missing everything on a free throw attempt and with the game on the line Friday night.

    “(Blodgett) was laughing about it coming to the bench,” said Golden boys basketball coach John Anderson about taking a timeout after Blodgett’s first of two free throws didn’t find the rim. “I felt pretty good he was going to make the next one.”

    With the Demons holding a three-point lead with 3 seconds to play in the Class 4A Jeffco League showdown with Green Mountain, Blodgett sealed the win by hitting nothing but net on his second attempt from the charity stripe to give the Demons (15-3, 8-1 in league) a hard-fought 70-66 road victory.

    Golden junior Ryan Thistlewood (21) passes the ball while being guarded by Green Mountain senior Alex Erickson (3). Thistlewood had a key bucket in the final minute to help propel the Demons to a 70-66 road victory. (Dennis Pleuss)

    “The game was over if I make this shot,” said Blodgett of his mindset stepping back to the line after his first arrant free throw. “I emptied my head and took the crowd out of it. I went up there and used my legs like I’m always told. I was pretty nervous.”

    Blodgett had a monster game with a team-high in points (18) and rebounds (17).

    “It’s every night with him,” Anderson said. “Ryan is so explosive and so fast. He is relentless after the ball.”

    The sophomore’s only struggles were at the free-throw line where he finished 2-for-8, but he wasn’t alone. Golden finished the night 8-for-22 from the charity stripe, but had enough to run its winning-streak to seven games.

    The important conference win over Green Mountain (10-8, 7-3) overshadowed a tough night at the line for the Demons.

    “We’ve obviously got to do better than that,” Anderson said of the struggles at the line. “Also, giving up a big lead like that. Our defense got stagnant and we were just standing around. You’ve got to guard, especially when Green Mountain has weapons like that.”

    Golden held what seemed to be a comfortable 15-point lead midway through the third quarter. However, Green Mountain chipped away and eventually took a 66-65 lead with a minute to play in the fourth quarter with a bucket from senior Daniel Brughelli.

    Brughelli finished with a game-high 21 points.

    “We started rebounding and we started playing better, plain and simple,” Green Mountain coach Derek Van Tassel said. “We didn’t play well at all in the first half and that is uncharacteristic for us. Against a team like (Golden) you have to play the whole time.”

    The Demons retook the lead at 67-66 with 47 seconds left on a left-handed runner in the lane from junior Ryan Thistlewood (14 points). After a missed 3-pointer from the Rams, Golden junior Cole Greff was fouled with 17 seconds left. Greff (14 points) made both to extend the lead to 69-66.

    Green Mountain sophomore Austin Fritts (11 points) launched a 3-pointer from the corner in an attempt to send the game into overtime, but his shot fell short and was rebounded by Blodgett. The made free throw by the sophomore sealed the win.

    Next week is critical in determining how the 4A Jeffco League will shake out.

    After facing Alameda at 4 p.m. Saturday, Golden will host conference-leading D’Evelyn (15-3, 10-0) at 7 p.m. Feb. 11. The Jaguars handled Evergreen (10-9, 6-4) on Friday night with a 70-49 victory.

    It will be the third meeting between the Demons and No. 4th-ranked Jaguars.

    Golden defeated D’Evelyn 77-67 in the championship game of the D’Evelyn/Golden Preview Classic before winter break. However, the Jaguars got some revenge with a 68-50 win over the Demons in their first of two league meetings.

    “It’s going to be exciting in our home place,” said Blodgett of the rubber match against D’Evelyn. “Hoping for a huge crowd and the schools show up. It’s going to be a great environment to play in.”

    Green Mountain has a pair of key road games next week. The Rams face Evergreen at 7 p.m. Feb. 11, before taking on D’Evelyn at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

    “They are all big. We want to play well every game,” Van Tassel said of facing two more top teams in the conference. “It’s going to be a fun week and a half.”

    LAKEWOOD — It was a playoff-like atmosphere Wednesday night at Green Mountain High School.

    The student sections were loud and the Class 4A Jeffco League game between close rivals D’Evelyn and Green Mountain came down to the wire. The D’Evelyn Jaguars, ranked No. 4 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys basketball rankings, survived the scare with a 66-60 win against the Rams.

    “Everyone is going to be gunning for us. Everyone is going to give us their best,” D’Evelyn senior Ty McGee said after the Jaguars (12-2, 7-0 in league) remained alone on top of 4A Jeffco. “This is how the playoffs are going to be. It’s going to be loud. The crowds are going to be crazy. You have to be mentally focused to get the win.”

    D'Evelyn Green Mountain boys basketball

    McGee (14 points) and junior Grant Witherspoon stepped it up in the fourth quarter to prevent Green Mountain (8-7, 5-2) from pulling off the upset. The two leading scorers for D’Evelyn combined for 15 points in the final quarter.

    Witherspoon has had the hot-shooting hand lately. The junior put up 30 and 31 points, respectfully, in the Jaguars’ wins over Wheat Ridge and Arvada last week. Foul trouble hampered Witherspoon, but he still managed a team-high 16 points.

    Senior Brian Smith had a strong second half for D’Evelyn and sophomore Cameron Brown contributed a pair of big 3-pointers late in the first half that allowed the Jaguars to take a 30-27 lead at halftime. Brown buried a pair from downtown in the final minute of the second quarter.

    “We needed someone to step up and Cameron gutted those two,” D’Evelyn coach Troy Pachner said. “That’s what you want out of your sophomore. You want him to be a moment player and that is what he was.”

    On the defensive side, D’Evelyn had some issues. Green Mountain’s 6-foot-6 senior Mitch Schafer had a season-high 18 points.

    “This is one of my best games honestly,” Schafer said. “They really couldn’t keep up with me.”

    Schafer was able to post up and didn’t have to face many double-teams with the Jaguars focused on not letting sophomore sharp shooter Austin Fritts get loose. Fritts finished with only five points, but the Rams had success on the inside with Schafer and senior Daniel Brughelli (13 points).

    “We did not do a good job with either interior kids. They were outstanding and we kept on giving them a lot of looks,” Pachner said. “You thought playing Golden, and the like, we would have been prepared for that.”

    D’Evelyn has split its first two games against Golden’s effective inside offensive attack.

    Green Mountain senior Alex Erickson scored 10 of his 11 points in the second half. The Rams cut the Jaguars’ lead down to four points late, but couldn’t come up with the victory.

    “My kids battled so hard. I’m so proud of them. They did a great job,” Green Mountain coach Derek Van Tassel said. “We just came up a little short tonight, but the good thing is we’ll get to play them again.”

    The Rams will get another shot at D’Evelyn, but next time it will be in ‘The Jungle’ on Feb. 13.

    “At D’Evelyn is going to be a tougher game, but I think we can handle it,” Schafer said. “It’s a smaller gym so it’s going to be way louder. It’s going to be great.”

    Pachner believes the tough conference test will serve his squad well.

    “Surviving close games in a hostile environment gets you ready for games down the line,” Pachner said.

    D’Evelyn puts its nine-game winning streak on the line at home against Alameda at 7 p.m. Friday. Green Mountain looks to get back on the winning track when it hosts Wheat Ridge at 7 p.m. Friday.

    DENVER — A winning streak coming to end Tuesday night at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School was a certainty.

    Green Mountain’s girls basketball team came in riding an 11-game winning streak, while the D’Evelyn Jaguars had won 35 straight Class 4A Jeffco League games dating back to the 2010-11 season.

    D’Evelyn (12-3, 7-0 in league), ranked No. 8 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A girls poll, ran its conference streak to 36 games with a 58-50 victory over the Rams (13-3, 6-1). The Jaguars used their effective full-court press on defense and buried five 3-pointers to build a double-digit lead midway through the first half.

    “It just shows that we are the best team in the league when we play our best game of basketball,” said D’Evelyn senior Malia Shappell, who led the scoring effort with 20 points. “We actually didn’t play our best basketball tonight, but we pulled it out and played as a family. It was a team effort.”

    Shappell was hot from beyond the arc. The senior guard drained four 3-pointers through the first 11 minutes of the game.

    “I’ve got to thank my teammates,” said Shappell, who finished with five 3-pointers on the night. “They found me when I was open.”

    D’Evelyn coach Chris Olson was aiming for his team to make six to eight 3-pointers on the night. Sophomore Lexi Reed (14 points) hit a pair and senior Katie Cunniff sunk a 3-pointer in the final quarter to give the Jaguars eight 3-pointers for the game.

    While D’Evelyn long-range shooting was on, Olson best described his team’s defense.

    “We smothered (Green Mountain),” Olson said. “We wanted to make sure we started well. We know they are real physical and try to pound and pound to beat you up. If you don’t start well then you are going to play from behind against that and it’s really tough to do.”

    Green Mountain coach Rudy Martin admitted it was a little difficult to prepare for D’Evelyn and its defensive pressure.

    “It’s hard to simulate their length and quickness in practice,” Martin said. “I think we settled down in the second half and realized where we could pass it and where we couldn’t.”

    The Rams’ leading scorer was held in check for most of the game. Freshman Delaney Bernard was clearly the focus when Green Mountain was able to break through the Jaguars’ pressure. The sharpshooter finished with a pair of 3-pointers and eight points.

    Green Mountain found success in the second half with senior Kelli Van Tassel (13 points) and junior Brooklyn Gaffner (nine points) doing damage down low.

    “We’ve just really wanted to beat (D’Evelyn) for a long time,” Van Tassel said. “We really didn’t talk about their streak. We just wanted to play well against them and hopefully get the win.”

    Green Mountain will get another shot at D’Evelyn toward the end of conference play. The Rams will host the Jaguars on Feb. 13.

    “Next time when they come to our place we’ll see if they hit those 3s,” Martin said. “It wasn’t like (Shappell) wasn’t covered half the time. We had a hand up in her face. She just made them. Shappell had a good game tonight.”

    D’Evelyn and Green Mountain will both be on the road for 4A Jeffco games at 7 p.m. Friday. The Jaguars face Alameda. The Rams square off against Wheat Ridge.

    LAKEWOOD — Denver South turned up the defensive pressure and cleaned things up on the glass in the second half Friday night at Green Mountain High School.

    The Rebels evened up their record to 5-5 this season with a 71-64 road victory in boys hoops action. Denver South trailed 40-34 at halftime, but turned things around in the second half.

    “The main focus is we felt we were getting beat on the boards,” Denver South coach Malik Fletcher said after the Rebels’ first game back from winter break. “We dedicated the second half to cleaning up the rebounds on both ends.”

    The Rams rarely had second-chance opportunities after halftime. Green Mountain senior Will Zeiner hurt the Rebels several put-backs in the first half. Zeiner poured in 13 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the second half.

    Denver South took the lead for good with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter when senior Antonio Garcia drained a 3-pointer to give the Rebels a 57-55 lead. Senior Tyson Purifoy hit another 3-pointer a minute later to push Denver South’s lead to 60-55.

    “It felt good coming off of break,” said Purifoy, who finished with a game-high 28 points. “It was tough being behind coming into the second half. We had a slow start, but we got it done.”

    Purifoy and senior Lorenzo Snoddy (20 points) led the way for the Rebels. Denver South outscored Green Mountain (3-4 record) 25-14 in the final quarter.

    Denver South’s 6-foot-8 senior Ibrahim Sylla had a quiet 15 points, but had a couple of key baskets in the final two minutes to keep Green Mountain at bay.

    Green Mountain sophomore Austin Fritts had a team-high 24 points for the Rams. He drained six 3-pointers and was fouled on two other 3-point attempts that led to five made free throws.

    “We were prepared coming in knowing (Fritts) was going to make some shots,” Fletcher said. “We just wanted to stay positive if he knocked some down.”

    With Denver South picking up its defensive intensity, Green Mountain didn’t get many open offensive looks in the second half while being held to 24 points in the second half.

    “We’ve got to work harder on screens. We’ve just got to work,” Fritts said. “We had wide-open looks in the first half, but when they came up on us in the second half we needed to run more offense and be more aggressive.”

    Senior Daniel Brughelli had a solid second half for the Rams. He finished with 13 points in what was Green Mountain’s third straight loss.

    Green Mountain plays one final non-league game at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6, before heading into its 14-game 4A Jeffco League schedule. The Rams will host defending 5A Jeffco champion Chatfield next Monday night.

    The Chargers (6-2, 2-0 in league) will come into Green Mountain High School on a four-game winning streak. It will also be Chatfield’s first game since the winter break.

    “This is exactly what we need,” Fritts said. “These two games (Denver South and Chatfield) are big for us. It shows what we are going to be going up against and shows what we are made of.”

    Denver South hosts Hinkley at 7 p.m. on Jan. 7.
