Chatfield is the No. 1 team in this week’s 5A baseball poll. (Pam Wagner)
Chatfield, 13-0 to start the 2014 season, has taken over atop this week’s Class 5A baseball poll from CHSAANow.com.
The Chargers moved up from No. 3 and received seven of the 15 first-place votes. They had 131 total points to top the ranking.
A total of six teams got first-place votes, including former No. 1 ThunderRidge, which dropped to No. 6 following its loss to Mountain Vista last week.
Fairview got two of those first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Columbine, which plays Chatfield on Wednesday, is third, and Regis Jesuit is fourth. Mountain Vista rounds out the top five.
After ThunderRidge, Arapahoe is seventh and Ralston Valley is eighth. Chaparral is No. 9 this week, and Rocky Mountain is No. 10.
The 4A ranking also got a new No. 1 team this week when Windsor overtook Montrose. The Wizards received six of the 13 first-place votes, and had 115 overall points.
Montrose dropped to second this week, and is followed by No. 3 Niwot. Wheat Ridge bumped up one place to No. 4, while Lewis-Palmer is No. 5 after 3-0 week which included a win over then-No. 10 Palmer Ridge on Saturday.
Longmont is the lone newcomer to the 4A poll, joining at No. 10.
The other No. 1 teams held firm atop their respective rankings. Holy Family continued to lead 3A, Swink remain atop of 2A and Stratton continued to lead 1A.

Mountain Vista boys lacrosse, riding a six-game winning streak, has moved up to No. 3 in this week’s Class 5A boys lacrosse rankings from CHSAANow.com.
The Golden Eagles are 10-2 to start the season, and beat No. 4 Kent Denver last week, 12-8.
Regis Jesuit held onto the top spot in 5A, and continued to be followed by No. 2 Cherry Creek.
After Mountain Vista, Kent Denver stayed at No. 4 and Arapahoe rounds out the top five.
Chaparral is the lone newcomer to the 5A poll this week, joining at No. 10.
In 4A, Wheat Ridge stayed in the No. 1 spot — a position it has occupied since the preseason.
Pine Creek toppled No. 1 Mountain Vista last week. This week, the Eagles now occupy that No. 1 spot.
Pine Creek beat Mountain Vista 4-3 on the road last Friday. Monday, the Eagles got eight of the 11 first-place votes and amassed 111 overall points to become the new No. 1 team.
Mountain Vista didn’t drop far. The Golden Eagles are No. 2 this week, while Rock Canyon is No. 3. Fairview is No 4 and Fossil Ridge rounds out the top five.
Unbeaten Smoky Hill (No. 6) and Ralston Valley (No. 10) are newcomers to the 5A ranking this week.
In 4A, Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the ranking. That poll added Palmer Ridge at No. 10.
3A, however, also got a new No. 1 team. Colorado Academy took over for Kent Denver, which went 1-1-1 last week. Kent dropped to No. 2.
The lone newcomer to the ranking was No. 10 St. Mary’s Academy, which beat Kent last week.

LAKEWOOD — A pair of free kicks Friday by Wheat Ridge freshman Alexandra Nillen put the Farmers’ girls soccer program firmly in the driver’s seat of the Class 4A Jeffco League.
Wheat Ridge, ranked No. 8 in the latest CHSAANow.com 4A poll, took a 2-1 victory against No. 7 Evergreen at Lakewood Memorial Field in the showdown that likely determined the conference champion.
Wheat Ridge junior Carlee Flanagan (6) elevates for a header during the first half Friday at Lakewood Memorial Field. (Dennis Pleuss)
Nillen scored on a direct free kick in the 45th minute in the second half to break a scoreless tie. Another set piece started by Nillen with a free kick found the foot of junior Carlee Flanagan in the 54th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.
“I was planning on going far post and Carlee just happened to be there. It was a great finish by her,” said Nillen, who leads the Farmers with 10 goals and also has four assists.
Flanagan’s game-winner was her fourth goal of the season. The junior praised Nillen and her free kick that answered Evergreen’s goal in the 49th minute from sophomore Zoe Peterson on a direct free kick that tied the game at 1-1.
“That ball from Alex (Nillen) was beyond perfect,” Flanagan said. “Everyone was moving. Everyone was ready to go. I just happened to be right there on the back post for her beautiful ball. It was just perfect.”
Perfect is how Wheat Ridge (9-2, 5-0 in league) can finish out conference play next week. The Farmers face Arvada and Alameda next week where they can complete an unblemished league record.
Wheat Ridge and Evergreen (6-3-2, 3-1-1) both hadn’t given up a goal in league play. The Farmers edged D’Evelyn 1-0 earlier in the week. The Cougars battled Green Mountain for 100 minutes before ending an in 0-0 tie on Wednesday.
A scoreless first half Friday in the conference showdown wasn’t much of a surprise. Both teams combining for three goals in the span of nine minutes in the second half was a little of out character for the defensively strong teams.
“Something needed to happen to get the game going a little bit. That first goal, Alex’s brilliant free kick lifted everybody up,” Wheat Ridge coach Dan Watkins said. “The intensity of the game got more into a league championship type game.”
Watkins has had no problem putting the weight on Nillen’s shoulders of taking those key free kicks on scoring chances. The Farmers are on a six-game winning streak where they have outscored their opponents 15-1.
“Stepping in as a freshman. Technically she is very, very solid,” Watkins said of Nillen. “We’ve asked her to kind of come in and hit those balls. She is very confident and that is a great characteristic as a freshman.”
Wheat Ridge junior Roma Sandburg (10) and Evergreen junior Jahna Pusedu (4) battle for a ball Friday at Lakewood Memorial Field. (Dennis Pleuss)
Wheat Ridge’s last loss was to Mullen before spring break.
“We’ve just come together as a team a lot more,” Flanagan said of the change over the past month. “We have learned to move the ball a lot better and finish.”
Wheat Ridge’s next game on the pitch is a non-league test on the road against Silver Creek at 4 p.m. April 21.
“We’ve got a great balance going forward toward playoffs,” Watkins said. “We want to make sure we finish off the league season right.”
Evergreen will face rival Conifer on the Lobos’ home field April 22, before concluding its league schedule against Golden at 4 p.m. April 24, at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.
The Cougars have a 0-2-1 record in their past three games, but Evergreen coach Peter Jeans said the focus is to just improve in some areas before heading into the postseason.
“These are all good teams. We kind of beat each other up,” Jeans said of the 4A Jeffco League. “We have to defend set pieces better. We did have other chances to score. We didn’t make the most of our opportunities.”
With the top three 4A Jeffco teams earning automatic berths into the 32-team state tournament, it looks like Wheat Ridge, Evergreen and Green Mountain should lock up postseason tickets.

Wild Card points help determine the postseason fields in 3A, 4A and 5A, with 4A and 5A also using them for seeding. Find a more detailed breakdown here.
Baseball’s Wild Card point standings for April 17 are below.
Fairview, and shortstop Cameron Frazier (3) are No. 4 in this week’s 5A baseball poll. (Dennis Pleuss)
Perhaps no win was bigger for Fairview in recent years than last Thursday’s decision over then-No. 5 Rocky Mountain.
But the win for the Knights was just one-fourth a tough 4-0 week last week, and now they find themselves ranked No. 4 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A baseball poll. Fairview was seventh last week.
The Knights are actually 7-0 in Colorado, with the lone loss coming in Arizona during a Spring Break tournament. Their lineup has produced double-digit scoring outputs the past four games.
ThunderRidge remained in its top spot in the 5A ranking, where it has been since the preseason. Regis Jesuit stayed at No. 2, and Chatfield held firm at No. 3.
Behind Fairview, Columbine rounds out the top five.
Ralston Valley is No. 6, Mountain Vista is No. 7 and Arapahoe is No. 8. Rocky Mountain dropped to No. 9 after going 1-2 last week.
Chaparral is the lone newcomer to 5A this week. The Wolverines rejoined the poll at No. 10.
Elsewhere, Swink took over the top spot in the 2A ranking. At 9-0, Swink moved up from No. 2. Former No. 1 Resurrection Christian dropped to No. 3.
The 2A poll added Kiowa (No. 8) this week.
The other No. 1 teams remained the same. Those are Montrose (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Stratton (1A).
The 4A poll has two new teams this week: Wheat Ridge, which joined all the way at No. 5, and Elizabeth, which is No. 7.

Arvada West and Arapahoe both joined this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A girls soccer ranking.
A-West joined at No. 9, while Arapahoe is No. 10. Both teams went 3-0-0 last week.
Mountain Vista retained its spot atop the ranking, which makes sense considering the Golden Eagles are unbeaten and topped No. 2 Rock Canyon last week.
Rock Canyon remained at No. 2, Pine Creek stayed put at No. 3, and Fossil Ridge held at No. 4. Fairview rounds out the top 5.
The rankings’ other two No. 1 teams, Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Kent Denver (3A), also stayed put this week.
Mullen made its return to CHSAANow.com’s boys lacrosse poll in Class 5A this week, and the Mustangs were joined by newcomer Palmer.
Mullen, now 6-5, won both of its games last week and is No. 8 in this week’s ranking.
Palmer, meanwhile, is 5-2 and also went 2-0 last week. The Terrors are No. 9.
Regis Jesuit stayed atop the 5A ranking this week, and continued to be followed by No. 2 Cherry Creek. Arapahoe moved up one place to No. 3, leaping No. 4 Kent Denver. Mountain Vista rounds out the top 5.
Wheat Ridge held firm is 4A’s No. 1 spot, as well. In fact, the entire top 5 stayed put, including No. 2 Ponderosa, No. 3 Steamboat Springs, No. 4 Aspen and No. 5 Thompson Valley.
Conifer was the lone new team to 4A’s poll, joining at No. 10.
Wheat Ridge players get fired up after senior Lane Wagoner (helmet on) reaches home plate after his solo home run Saturday at Keli McGregor Field at All Star Park. The Farmers extended their winning streak to six games with a 14-9 victory against D’Evelyn in Class 4A Jeffco League action. (Dennis Pleuss)
LAKEWOOD — Wheat Ridge remained atop the Class 4A Jeffco League baseball standings with an offensive barrage Saturday afternoon at Keli McGregor Field at All Star Park.
The Farmers (7-2, 5-0 in league) ran their winning streak to six games with a 14-9 victory against conference rival D’Evelyn. Wheat Ridge is the lone undefeated team in conference play with Evergreen (7-2, 4-1), ranked No. 10 in the CHSAANow.com 4A poll, one-game back of the Farmers.
“It feels great,” said Wheat Ridge senior Nick Ricigliano of Wheat Ridge sitting in the 4A Jeffco driver’s seat. “We just have to keep it going and don’t stop. Go full throttle for the rest of the year.”
Ricigliano was a key piece in the Farmers’ offensive that had its foot on the gas pedal against D’Evelyn. The senior shortstop hammered a pair of two-run home runs. Ricigliano’s first blast over the left field fence put the Farmers ahead 9-3 in the top of the fourth inning.
D’Evelyn senior Rhett Pedersen, left, loses the handle of the ball as Wheat Ridge senior Nick Ricigliano bares down on second base during the first inning Saturday. Umpires ruled that Pedersen lost the ball on the exchange and Ricigliano was called out of the play. (Dennis Pleuss)
Senior Lane Wagoner belted a solo home run to extend Wheat Ridge’s lead to 10-3 going to the bottom of the fourth inning.
“To be honest, I thought maybe first to four (runs) would win,” Wheat Ridge coach Adam Miller said. “It just didn’t start off that way. That is the capability we have offensively.”
Wheat Ridge had been swinging some hot bats during its six-game winning streak. The Farmers have averaged 10.5 runs per game since a shutout loss during their spring break trip to Arizona.
The Farmers needed every run Saturday. D’Evelyn battled back and closed Wheat Ridge’s lead to 10-8 after a four-run fifth inning. However, Ricigliano provided a loud response with his second two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.
“I got most of the team energized and ready to go,” Ricigliano said of his second home run. “D’Evelyn is a pretty good team. It was just a good win against a good team.”
Wagoner pitched four innings in relief for the Farmers after starter Chase Powell went three innings on the mound. Wagoner gave up five runs on four hits, but it was good enough to keep the Jaguars (5-5, 3-2) at bay.
“He (Wagoner) has come in three or four games like that,” Miller said. “Not really a chance to warm up, but he throws strikes and does a good job.”
Defense was an issue at times for Wheat Ridge and D’Evelyn. Both teams committed four fielding errors apiece.
The biggest error that cost the Jaguars came in the third inning. Wheat Ridge junior Nate Sanchez ripped a single that scored Wagoner. Sanchez sprinted toward second base when the throw went to the plate. The throw from home to second base to get Sanchez sailed into centerfield.
D’Evelyn junior Grant Witherspoon fires to the plate Saturday during the Jaguars’ 14-9 loss to Class 4A Jeffco League rival Wheat Ridge on Saturday at Keli McGregor Field in Lakewood. (Dennis Pleuss)
“I think we are very aggressive on the bases and have some kids who can run. I think it causes a lot of havoc,” Miller said. “Today we got a bunch of extra bases by putting pressure on the defense.”
Sanchez and junior Garrett O’Keefe both scored for the Farmers on the throwing error.
“Take care of baseball. We’ve been struggling with that all year long,” D’Evelyn coach Dan Porreco said. “We gave (Wheat Ridge) some extra runs. It was a good ballgame. Everyone kept fighting back.”
D’Evelyn lefty Grant Witherspoon suffered the loss on the mound. The Jaguars did muster nine runs off nine hits, but could never grab the lead.
The Jaguars have time with nine league games still remaining to get back into the hunt for the conference title.
“With our league I think things are going to change the second go-around,” Porreco said. “Everyone likes to beat up everybody. We’ll see how it goes. We just have to start playing better.”
D’Evelyn is scheduled to host Arvada on Monday, April 14. Wheat Ridge hits the road Monday for its first of two conference games against rival Golden. Both are scheduled for 4 p.m. starts.
Wheat Ridge senior Lane Wagoner, left, past D’Evelyn catcher Matt Helmreich during a play at home plate in the third inning Saturday. Wagoner went 2-for-3 from the plate with a pair of RBIs in the Farmers’ 14-9 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)
