Valor Christian boys basketball is the new No. 1 in Class 4A. The Eagles escaped Evergreen in a 54-53 win last week.
The previous top team in the CHSAANow.com 4A rankings, Pueblo West, wasn’t so lucky. The Cyclones lost to Pueblo South 67-64 after being down 34-19 at halftime. Pueblo West didn’t fall too far however, sliding to the No. 2 spot.
That Pueblo South team got some recognition for the upset as they joined the 4A poll at No. 8.
3A also added a new team to the rankings. Manual came in at No. 10 in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.
In 5A, Doherty and Grandview swapped places, with the Spartans rising from No. 7 to No. 5. Doherty won its second-straight league title after beating Rampart. Grandview dropped after its loss to No. 4 Eaglecrest.
Dawson received one first place vote as they rose from No. 9 to No. 6 in the 2A poll. The top three teams remained the same in 2A.
Crowley County entered the 2A rankings at No. 8.
In 1A, Longmont Christian moved from No. 6 to No. 4, swapping with Flagler.
Weldon Valley dropped out, making room for Primero to jump into the rankings at No. 10.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final rankings of the regular season.
Lewis-Palmer is making the right moves at the right time when it comes to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.
After beating Sand Creek just over a week ago, the Rangers put on another impressive showing with a 65-56 win over PPAC front-runner Vista Ridge. With everyone now paying attention, Lewis-Palmer jumps four spots to land at No. 4 this week.
Pueblo West, Valor Christian and D’Evelyn all stood their ground at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.
Sierra also made a significant move as the Stallions are at No. 6, three spots better than last week’s poll. Mead broke into the poll this week at No. 8.
ThunderRidge remains the top team in the 5A poll and rightfully so considering the Grizzlies haven’t lost since Dec. 20 and are undefeated against Colorado teams.
Eaglecrest received two first-place votes and jumped one spot to No. 4 as a result.
Fort Collins is the lone newcomer to the poll, rounding it out at No. 4.
Resurrection Christian remains No. 1 in 3A after edging No. 4 Sterling on Friday. Colorado Springs Christian remains at No. 2 while Manitou Springs jumps one spot to No. 3.
There were no new teams in the 3A rankings.
Undefeated Highland still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 2A poll. Fowler jumped three spots from a week ago, coming in at No. 7. Haxtun joins the 2A rankings at No. 8.
Holly is still the top team in 1A. The top four teams from last week’s ranking went unchanged this week.
There were some big moves however as Rocky Mountain Lutheran made a three-spot jump to No. 5 and at No. 6, Longmont Christian is four spots better than they were last week.
Kit Carson joins the 1A poll at No. 9.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
Pueblo West does not like falling out of the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.
For the second time in three weeks, the Cyclones have regained the No. 1 spot after falling out (without a loss) of it.
Valor Christian jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 2. But that’s where most of the consistency in the 4A poll ends.
Holy Family made a five-spot jump to break into the top five and the bottom half of the poll saw three new teams. Northridge is in at No. 6, Lewis-Palmer is back in the poll at No. 8 and Sierra also makes its return at No. 9.
ThunderRidge has shown no desire to drop out of the top spot of the 5A, despite the solid play of the rest of the teams in the top-five, each of whom also held onto their spots.
Doherty re-enters the rankings at No. 7 this week, the only new team to enter the poll.
Resurrection Christian remains the No. 1 team in 3A, but Colorado Springs Christian jumps up to No. 2 thanks to a last-second with over this week’s No. 4, Manitou Springs.
At No. 10, Machebeuf is the lone newcomer in the 3A rankings.
(Katie Pickrell/CHSAANOW.com)
Highland and Sedgwick Country remain the top two teams in the 2A rankings, but the No. 3 spot has a new look in the form of Del Norte.
The 2A poll had no new teams this week.
The poll in 1A overall looks very similar to what it was last week. Holly and Cheyenne Wells remain at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.
Sierra Grande jumped one spot to No. 3 and Rocky Mountain Lutheran also jumped a spot to come in at No. 8.
Like 2A, there were no new teams in the 1A rankings.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
It’s been hard not to pay attention to Sand Creek boys basketball this season. They have one of the top players in the state in D’Shawn Schwartz and now, they are the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.
The Scorpions unseat defending champion Pueblo West, who regained the No. 1 position a week ago.
Silver Creek made an impressive four-spot jump to break into the top five.
Holy Family is the only new team to break into the poll, landing at No. 10.
ThunderRidge remains the No. 1 team in 5A, beating Douglas County in its only game last week.
Basalt jumps to No. 7, three spots better than last week.
Strasburg is the only new team in the 3A poll, rounding it out at No. 10.
Highland keeps its spot at No. 1 in the 2A poll and beat No. 5 Akron on Friday, further showing that they can contend for a state title.
At No. 8, Crowley County is the only new team to the 2A rankings.
Holly remains the No. 1 team in 1A with Cheyenne Wells and Flagler holding their spots at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.
Peetz (No. 7) and Longmont Christian (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A poll.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

The 2016 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.

Player of the year: Dylan McCaffrey, Valor Christian
It’s still early in the 2016-17 boys basketball season, but George Washington has already made some impressive moves.
The Patriots come in as the new No. 1 team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings. In the two weeks since the release of the preseason rankings, they have gone 5-0 which included a three-point win over No. 2 Rock Canyon and a 13-point win over defending state champion Overland.
With a five-point loss to Rock Canyon, preseason No. 1 Eaglecrest falls to No. 5.
Grandview jumped two spots to land at No. 7 while Smoky Hill (No. 8) and Chatfield (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 5A poll.
A 3-0 record over the first week and a half of the season has kept Pueblo West as the No. 1 team in 4A.
Valor Christian also holds tight at N0. 2, despite a season-opening loss to 5A No. 9 Doherty.
Vista PEAK has looked good early in the year, starting with a 6-0 run to start the season. The Bison made a five-spot jump to come in at No. 4 this week.
Lewis-Palmer is the only new team to the 4A rankings, coming in at No. 10.
Colorado Springs Christian holds its spot as the No. 1 team in 3A. Resurrection Christian jumped five spots to come in at No. 2. Manitou Springs (No. 3) and Alamosa (No. 4) each moved up two spots from the preseason rankings.
At No. 7 and No. 10 respectively, Frontier Academy and Kent Denver are the two new teams to the 3A rankings.
Sedgwick County takes over as the No. 1 team in the 2A poll after Sanford’s 74-game winning streak came to an end last week.
The Indians now sit at No. 6.
There was a high turnover rate in the 2A rankings as four new teams broke into the poll this week.
Akron comes in at No. 4, Del Norte lands at No. 5, Dayspring Christian sits at No. 7 and Peyton breaks in at No. 9.
Starting 5-0 has meant good things for Holly, the No. 1 team in 1A this week.
The Wildcats snagged six firs-place votes in the process.
Like the 2A poll, there was significant turnover in 1A this week.
Weldon Valley (No. 3), Eads (No. 7), Peetz (No. 9) and Sangre de Cristo (No. 10) are all newcomers to the rankings.
Fleming, who came in as the preseason No. 1 comes in at No. 6 this week.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

JULESBURG — Sedgwick County has a longstanding tradition on the gridiron. After a 41-11 triumph over Akron in the 8-man football state championship game, the Cougars added to that legacy by winning back-to-back titles.
“This county, from both sides, has a lot of tradition over the years,” Sedgwick County coach Chris Michel said. “To bring home a couple championships to this community is important to the people who live here.”
The co-op program is comprised of Julesburg and Revere. Overall, the two schools and the co-op are now 15-3 all-time in championship games. Julesburg won four titles between 1963 and 1970 and Revere won nine trophies, six between 1989 and 1997.
Sedgwick County (12-1), which defeated Akron 36-6 in last year’s state finals and 46-8 in a Plains Division game this season, was equally emphatic Saturday on their home field.
In the first quarter, they established the ground game while piling up 104 yards and taking a 12-0 lead. Junior running back Tyce Marquez had an 11-yard touchdown run and sophomore back Layne Green had a 54-yard burst that set up a 22-yard touchdown catch by Chad Mikelson.
A 43-yard scamper for a score by Marquez with 3 minutes, 16 seconds left in the opening half made it 20-0. Green added a 6-yard touchdown run and Sedgwick County tallied 222 of their 367 yards before halftime.
“Setting up the run game was very important, so that we can pass it and have more balance,” Mikelson said. “That run game set up the pass game.”
Akron (10-3) moved the chains for the initial time with 11:04 left in the second quarter, but could only muster half of Sedgwick’s yardage with 111 yards. An impressive 40-yard field goal by Raul Alvarez in the final ticks of the second quarter was all the Rams tallied to the scoreboard as they trailed 28-3 at the break.
On the second play of the third quarter, Green rumbled his way to a 29-yard touchdown. Then, Mikelson added an acrobatic grab for another score. As the senior wide receiver was falling down, the football just fell out of his grasp. But the play was kept alive as it was bobbled twice before finally getting caught while lying on his backside.
“I was just trying to catch it at first and I saw it was batted up,” Mikelson said of the highlight-reel snag. “It was kind of off to the side, so I just tried to tip it to myself. Luckily it fell into my hands.”
Mikelson had a habit of making fantastic plays for Sedgwick County throughout the season, sealing his career with one final memorable touchdown. He finished the game with four catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns, capping his senior year with 21 touchdown receptions.
“I think sometimes you’re better off being lucky than good, but Chad has really good ball skills,” Michel, in his third season as the head coach, said. “He has the ability to catch the ball in some weird places sometimes. He’s a pretty special kid. Anytime the ball is in the air around him he has a shot to go and get it.”
Mikelson and fellow 6-foot-3 wide receiver Cade McKinley (32-yard catch in third quarter), backs Marquez (83 yards, two touchdowns), Green (111 yards, two touchdowns) and Beau Parker (12 touchdowns in 2016), and quarterback Brennan Ehmke (27 touchdown passes) comprised an offensive unit that no team in the state could stall. And the defense only gave up 86 points the whole year, allowing a lone touchdown to Akron, which came on a 49-yard catch and score by Brock Benson in the fourth quarter.

For the second year in succession, Sedgwick County was a force. With a 25-1 record in the two seasons, the only loss was a 34-28 setback to Perkins County (Neb.) this year, the Cougars have been just about untouchable in 8-man. Don’t look for them to take their foot off the gas any time soon — Marquez, Green, Parker, McKinley, and Ehmke will all be back.
For Coach Michel, after the Cougars won on Akron’s field last year, claiming the championship on home ground this time around felt even a touch sweeter.
“I think any time you win at home it’s a little more special,” he said. “You get a lot more people from your community. These kids worked really hard all year long. They just did a really good job developing throughout the season. Both (titles) feel pretty good.”
The Rams, appearing in their 11th state final since 1999, found a few seams in the run game as Tyler Wylie, Derrick Poss, and quarterback Levi Basler all had some success. Basler led the way with 112 yards, but Akron also fumbled twice in the first half. Akron will return a strong contingent on both sides of the ball next year.
It appears that defending girls basketball state champions are going to have their work cut out for them in 2016-17.
Only Valor Christian comes in as a No. 1 team in the CHSAANow.com preseason girls basketball rankings as a team who also finished the season hoisting a state championship trophy.
Led by Michaela Onyenwere, Grandview comes in as the top team in 5A. The Wolves advanced to the Final 4 last season, but lost a heartbreaker to eventual state champion ThunderRidge.
The Grizzlies did not break into the top 10 to start the season.
In 3A, it’s the 2016 state runner-up Manitou Springs who comes in as the No.1 team to start the year.
The Mustangs return senior Shelby Megyeri, who is regarded as one of the top guards in the state.
Like the 3A poll, it’s the runner-up that will start the season at No. 1 in 2A. After falling to Yuma 55-46 in the 2A title game, Paonia will start the 2016-17 season as the top team in the class.
Yuma isn’t far behind though as the defending champ sit at No. 2.
A stunning upset in the first round of the 1A state tournament ended Kit Carson’s bid at a state title, but the Wildcats find themselves as the team to beat to start this season.
They take the No. 1 spot in the preseason 1A rankings.
The girls basketball regular season will begin Nov. 30.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
