  • Kate and Anna Griffin, twins and multi-sport athletes, went beyond athletics to enrich their high school experience

One look at an activity log for either Kate or Anna Griffin and one thing is clear and obvious: Neither one seems to crave downtime.

The (non-identical) twins are constantly busy whether it’s on the athletic fields, in the classroom or volunteering for their community. They do it all and they do it all very well.

And they mostly do it at different schools. Anna spent her high school days at Coronado where she played volleyball and tennis. She qualified for the Class 4A state tennis tournament three times and helped the Cougars reach the 4A volleyball semifinals this previous fall.

Like her sister, Kate is a multi-sport athlete, only she competes at the Colorado Springs School after figuring out that she preferred a small-school environment. Kate runs cross country, plays basketball and in the spring plays both tennis and golf. As the Kodiaks don’t have a golf team, Kate played for Coronado.

She took 12th at the 2019 2A girls state cross country meet before placing third at the 3A girls tennis tournament and turning around less than two weeks later to take sixth at state golf.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

“She excels at every sport but she has more accolades in golf, tennis and cross country over her career,” CSS girls basketball coach and athletic director Vicki Vaughn said. “She was all-state in all three of those sports, but basketball always resonated with her because of the team aspect.”

That right there is the true spirit of both Griffin sisters. They prioritize others over self and that’s especially true outside of athletics.

They’re both members of the National Honor Society and spent countless hours volunteering for their schools and communities.

“It’s definitely something I thought about right when I joined CSS,” Kate said. “At a private school, academics always come first. Community service is a requirement but it’s very important to me. It wasn’t all that challenging to figure out I needed to balance athletics as well as being involved in the community and the school.”

    It runs in the family.

Anna takes the same approach at Coronado. She likes taking a leadership mentality to the volleyball and tennis courts and uses that same approach to better the world around her. It’s a heavy burden for a high school student to take on, but as she’s progressed in athletics and activities, it’s clear that it’s part of who she is, not what she does.

“Going into high school through sports, that’s something I wanted to do by being a team captain or even just as a freshman on the JV team,” Anna said. “That translated through my service. Being a part of NHS or NCL — which is the National Charity League — we did a lot of community service.”

A lot of that community service was was done through the John Zay Guest House which she quickly proclaimed to be her favorite charity.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of how busy both sisters are is how they can balance every task on their plate and do it at a high level.

“It takes somebody very driven and motivated to maintain that balance and focus on important things like that,” former Coronado volleyball coach Crissy Leonhardt said. “She has it. She’s that kid. She’s a go-getter. When she puts her mind to something she’ll get it done and she will do it right.”

The one thing she had yet to do, and was on the verge of this spring, was sharing the playing field with her sister. Kate originally devoted most of her time to golf and for their senior year, she wanted Anna to join the team with her.

“She was pretty convincing,” Anna said. “I had talked to the golf coach a little bit about it and she was edging me to do it and I was pretty close. There’s a very good chance I would’ve been on the golf team.”

Which would’ve meant splitting time between golf and tennis. But not to worry because Kate had that blueprint all worked out.

Kate’s only intention was to add to it and had planned on playing soccer for Colorado Springs School as well as tennis while also competing for Coronado’s golf team.

“It’s kind of just become muscle memory,” Kate said of keeping her activities and school work all in line.

Although they didn’t get to share time on the golf course together, they have four years of shared experiences ahead of them. Both girls will attend Colorado State and study bio sciences.

And it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them find their way to some sort of athletic competition whether it’s intramurals, club or even somehow varsity.

If they’ve shown anything these last four years, it’s that they can find time to carve out for any activity they want.

  • Manitou Springs tabs Coronado’s Crissy Leonhardt as new volleyball coach

In her first year as volleyball coach at Coronado, Crissy Leonhardt had her team in the Class 4A state semifinals and was up 2-0 over eventual state champion Lewis-Palmer.

Next season Leonhardt will try to bring that instant level of success to her alma mater. She was hired as the volleyball at Manitou Springs High School, the same school she graduated from in 2008.

Athletic director Cameron Jones confirmed the hiring to CHSAANow.com on Tuesday.

Leonhardt spent time helping out the middle school volleyball program several years ago and now those players are at the high school level and contributing to the varsity program.

She also spent time as an assistant under Susan Odenbaugh at Lewis-Palmer and was on staff for two state championship teams for the Rangers.

She then took her first head coaching job at Coronado before getting the chance to return to Manitou.

“Definitely coming home and being an alumni was pretty huge,” she said. “Also, the fact that I worked with several of those kids at the middle school when I coached there for two years and I already know them. I know how awesome they are as human beings, not just athletically and skill-wise.”

The Mustangs finished 9-13 in 2019 but saw a lot of potential from their underclassmen. Freshman Avah Armour led the team with 169 kills while classmates Ayla Flett and Grace Allen also contributed on the attack.

They’ll get veteran leadership back in Mahlia Glass and graduated just two seniors who played more than 50 sets throughout the season.

With the majority of the team returning, Leonhardt is looking to get the Mustangs back to the state tournament for the first time since 2015.

“She’s going to bring a high level of competitiveness out of these girls and this team,” Jones said. “She has shown that she can take girls to the next to the next level. I think Crissy will continue to grow our program.”

  • Student Leadership committee selects state reps for 2020-21

The Student Leadership committee selected the fourteen 2020-21 CHSAA State Reps on Friday from a competitive list of over fifty applicants.

The final selections, which include a diverse group of students from every corner of Colorado, each offer unique backgrounds and perspectives that stood out among their peers.

“I was impressed with the resumes of each applicant,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Justin Saylor, who oversees student leadership. “Each student had proven leadership qualities, which made narrowing the list down extremely difficult. I commend the committee for their hard work and look forward to working with this group of State Reps over the course of next school year.”

The State Reps will have a daunting task ahead, trying to navigate the obstacles put forth by the COVID-19 pandemic that has currently shifted all activities and learning to virtual platforms.

Led by State Rep Advisor Trey Downey (Grand Junction Central), the group will go to work right away, planning for all Student Leadership programming for the upcoming school year.

State Reps will have a myriad of responsibilities, some of which include sitting on various CHSAA committees, assisting in the coordination of Student Leadership Summer and Fall Conferences, and being a voice for the CHSAA student body as a whole.

The final list includes six returning State Reps and eight new members, comprising of twelve seniors and two juniors.

  • Girls basketball playoff roundup: Pine Creek upsets Grand Junction Central

Hitting the road isn’t always a sign of impending doom when it comes to basketball playoffs. That certainly turned out to be the case for Pine Creek as it made its way west on I-70 for the first round of the Class 5A girls basketball state tournament.

The Eagles entered the tournament as the 39 seed, but it didn’t deter them as they left the western side of Colorado with a 29-26 win over Grand Junction Central. They’ll stay a little closer to home on Saturday when they head to Arvada to take on No. 7 Ralston Valley.

Pine Creek jumped out to a 20-8 lead at halftime but the offense quickly slowed down in the second half. Leah Redding knocked down a big 3-pointer for Central early in the fourth quarter to cut the Eagles’ lead to eight points.

Pine Creek made its way to the free throw line where Brynae Stewart made two and Jordyn Gutierrez made one to keep the game just out of Central’s reach.

    (22) Fairview 47, (43) Castle View 45

Fairview’s Izzy Munson led all scorers with 19 points as the Knights battled back from a five-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter. They’ll meet Denver South in the second round.

Leaya Mckinney and Alexa Barkeen each scored 11 for the Sabercats.

    (37) Brighton 63, (28) Mountain Range 53

The Bulldogs were one of just three lower-seeded teams to get wins in the first round. Their win over Mountain Range puts them in the second round where they’ll travel to Fruita Monument.

    (36) Arvada West 48, (29) Loveland 38

Arvada West’s first round win sets up a matchup with Grandview in the second round.

    Other 5A scores:

    • (32) Far Northeast Warriors 48, (33) Monarch 45
    • (30) Liberty 48, (35) Greeley West 38
    • (31) Horizon 60, (34) Eaglecrest 54

No. 37 Longmont upsets No. 28 D’Evelyn in first-round thriller

Jordynn Lee scored 17 points to lead Longmont to a first-round upset win over D’Evelyn. The Trojans advance to the second round of the 4A tournament where they’ll see a familiar foe in Erie.

Longmont opened the season with a 56-42 loss to the Tigers and now get a chance at redemption.

Emmelia Ashton added 13 points in Longmont’s winning effort on Tuesday.

    (19) Skyview 39, (46) Coronado 36

Jordan Gonzales knocked down a big 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter as Skyline held off a persistent Coronado team. The Cougars trailed by one entering the fourth quarter but Fatinah Muhammed made two key buckets to put them up by five.

But the Wolverines battled back to avoid the upset and stay alive in tournament play.

    (23) Palmer Ridge 38, (42) Pueblo East 36

Eden Bonser led all scorers with 17 points as the Bears grabbed a narrow win over the Eagles. They won’t travel far for their next game as they’ll take on league rival Air Academy on Friday.

  • All-state football teams for the 2019 season

The 2019 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
