Kent Denver boys soccer is still No. 1 in 3A. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

There was an element of consistency in the CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings this week.

Boulder, Air Academy and Kent Denver all held on to the top spots in their respective classes.

In 5A, Boulder comes as the unanimous top team in the state, taking all 10 first-place votes.

Legacy jumped four spots to land at No. 5 and Denver East jumped two spots to land at No. 3.

There were no new teams in the 5A rankings.

In 4A, Air Academy sits on top with Cheyenne Mountain and The Classical Academy coming in at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Denver West joins the 4A rankings at No. 6 and is the only new team to break into the rankings in any class this week.

Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 3A with Coal Ridge landing at No. 2, up a spot from last week.

KIPP jumped three spots to No. 3 and Jefferson Academy had a big, five-spot jump to come in at No. 5.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Kent Denver back on top of 3A

Kent Denver has regained the top spot of the Class 3A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings after relinquishing the spot last week.

The Sun Devils regained their position thanks to a 10-0 win over Bishop Mechebeuf on Friday.

Boulder remained in the top spot in 5A after playing their way into that ranking last week. Two new teams joined the 5A poll as Rampart made an impressive jump up to No. 6 and Arapahoe earned enough points to take over the No. 10 spot.

Evergreen hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 4A thanks to outscoring opponents 5-0 last week. Like 5A, two new teams joined the 4A poll as Skyline comes in at No. 6 with Skyview landing at No. 10.

Along with Kent Denver regaining the No. 1 spot in 3A, Jefferson Academy and Colorado Academy each jumped four spots with the Jaguars coming in at No. 4 and the Mustangs climbing to No. 5.

Vail Mountain is the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings at No. 9 this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Boys soccer rankings: All three classes get a new No. 1 team

    Rock Canyon Boulder boys soccer

Three new teams stand atop this week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, meaning there’s a new No. 1 team in each classification.

Boulder (Class 5A), Evergreen (4A) and KIPP Collegiate (3A) all now lead their respective classes.

In 5A, Boulder moved up due in part to former No. 1 Broomfield’s loss to Mountain Range in overtime last week. The Panthers got eight of the 10 first-place votes to take over.

Fort Collins also moved up, to No. 2, as did No. 3 ThunderRidge and No. 4 Arvada West. Fairview rounds out the top-5. ThunderRidge jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 after an impressive week in which they outscored their opponents 11-3 in three games.

Broomfield fell to sixth, Cherry Creek is seventh and Rocky Mountain is up to No. 8.

Aurora Central and Far Northeast are this week’s newcomers to the 5A poll, landing at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

The top seeds from last week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings all fell out of place this week. In Class 5A, Broomfield was topped by Mountain Range in overtime making Boulder the new No. 1.

Former 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain was upset at the hands of Pueblo West, which helped Evergreen shoot to the top spot.

The occupants of last week’s 4A poll remain the same, but with Cheyenne Mountain falling out of the top spot, there was some shakeup in the order. Valor Christian jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 and Littleton landed at No. 6 this week, up two spots from their ranking last week.

After recording a 3-0 win over Kent Denver Thursday, the Kent Denver Sun Devils played Fountain Valley to a 1-1 draw, allowing KIPP to take over the top spot in 3A.

Other big moves were made in 3A as Faith Christian made the jump from No. 6 to No. 3. There were also three newcomers to the 3A ranks as DSST Stapleton (No. 5), Jefferson Academy (No. 8) and Fountain Valley — fresh off its tie with Kent Denver — (No. 10) all joined the poll this week

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Four new teams join 5A poll

    niwot-peak-to-peak-boys-soccer-29
Niwot is up to No. 5 in 3A boys soccer. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Despite the top teams remaining the same in the Class 5A, 4A and 3A CHSAANow.com soccer polls, there was plenty of changes from last week.

Of the four new teams who joined the 5A rankings, two of them fell out of the polls just last week. Arvada West (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 9) rejoin the top 10 after playing their way out of last week’s rankings. They’re joined by Legacy (No. 8) and Rocky Mountain (No. 10), who make their first appearance in the polls this season.

ThunderRidge also made a significant jump this season, going from No. 9 to No. 6 after going 2-0 last week.

Broomfield remained No. 1 in 5A.

The 10 teams from last week’s 4A polls remained the same, but Valor Christian did jump from No. 8 to No. 4. Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the 4A ranking.

Pagosa Springs, which was unranked in the preseason, has made the jump to No. 3 in 3A this week. Salida climbs back into the polls at No. 5 after falling out of the top 10 last week. Aurora West lands at No. 8 as the other newcomer in 3A.

Kent Denver stayed on top of the 3A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain new No. 1 in 4A

Cheyenne Mountain boys soccer opened the season with a big win last week, and finds itself ranked No. 1 in Class 4A this week.

Cheyenne Mountain beat then-No. 2 The Classical Academy 3-2 in a season opener. Coupled with former No. 1 Air Academy’s loss to Evergreen, Cheyenne Mountain took over.

Evergreen, No. 8 in the preseason, moved up to No. 2 in the 4A poll, which is conducted by CHSAANow.com. The Classical Academy is No. 3, and Littleton made a big jump from No. 7 to No. 4.

Denver West, unranked in the preseason, is No. 5.

Niwot held steady at No. 6, Air Academy dropped to No. 7 and newcomer Valor Christian is No. 8. Ponderosa is No. 9 and another newcomer, Greeley West, rounds out the ranking.

Things were pretty crazy in the 5A ranking, which added six new teams. Yes, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams — Broomfield and Boulder — held their respective spots, but that was just about it.

    (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)
Fort Collins was one of six new teams to the 5A poll, checking in at No. 3. (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

Joining the ranking were No. 3 Fort Collins, No. 5 Rangeview, No. 7 George Washington, No. 8 Denver East, No. 9 ThunderRidge and No. 10 Far Northeast (formerly Montbello). Fairview (No. 4) and Cherry Creek (No. 6) were the other holdovers from the preseason.

The 3A poll also had similar shakeup. Four new teams joined: No. 4 KIPP, No. 8 Pagosa Springs, No. 9 Colorado Springs Christian and No. 10 Denver Science & Tech Stapleton.

Kent Denver retained the No. 1 spot in that poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Notebook: Cheraw’s Headrick just misses receiving touchdown record

Cheraw junior Tristan Headrick entered his team’s Week 8 game against Cotopaxi with 24 receiving touchdowns. The state record is 25.

“We were aware of it, so we were going to try and get him touches,” Cheraw coach Brad Phillips said on Tuesday.

But with Cheraw, a 6-man program, leading 16-0 early in the second quarter, Cotopaxi had to forfeit the game when injuries meant they could no longer field a team. Headrick didn’t have a touchdown to that point, so he stayed at 24.

Fast forward to Monday, and the release of the Wild Card points. This season, 6-man football is using the formula to help in determining crossover games, which take place in Week 9 of the regular season. Sixteen teams move on to play, including the Nos. 1 and 2 teams from each conference, as well as six Wild Card spots.

Cheraw was No. 16 in that forumla, but Genoa-Hugo/Karval, No. 18 in the Wild Card points, was No. 2 in the Central League. It meant Cheraw got bumped. Their season over was over, and so was Headrick’s chance at a record.

“It’s too bad,” Phillips said. “But he had a good year.”

Headrick finished his season with 1,295 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns. Perhaps most astonishingly, he only had 48 catches — meaning that every other reception he had, he scored.

Another thing to keep in mind: Heritage’s Shane Optiz set the record during the 2009 season, when his Eagles won the Class 4A championship. His mark came over 14 games. Headrick played seven games and one quarter.

In any case, Optiz will keep the record. At least until Headrick gets another shot at it next year.

Lewis-Palmer volleyball’s national profile is rising

Just how good is this Lewis-Palmer volleyball team? The Rangers are ranked No. 3 in MaxPreps’ latest national poll. That’s astounding.

    Lewis-Palmer Cheyenne Mountain volleyball
    (Matt Daniels)

Lewis-Palmer, ranked No. 1 in the latest CHSAANow.com 4A poll, moved to 19-0 with a 3-1 win over 5A No. 7 Chaparral on Tuesday.

That the Rangers actually dropped a set is significant. It was only the second one they’ve lost the entire season. The other came in a 2-1 win over Valley (3A’s current No. 2 team) in a tournament in early September. They have now won 53 sets, and dropped two.

And it’s not as though the schedule has been weak. There are the wins over Chaparral and Valley, and well as sweeps of Cheyenne Mountain (at the time No. 2 in 4A), Rampart (at the time No. 1 in 5A) and Valor Christian (then No. 7 in 4A). L-P has played anyone and everyone willing to land on the schedule.

Should this dominance continue on through the state tournament, the question at that point may turn from one of a national perspective to historical. At this point, 1979 Evergreen team is widely regarded as the best in state history. In fact, they were inducted into CHSAA’s Hall of Fame last January. Recently, though, the 2011 Chaparral squad headed by Nicole Dalton was hailed as a challenger to the Evergreen squad.

That Chaparral team ended the season 31-0, ranked No. 3 in MaxPreps’ national poll, and went 93-6 in terms of sets. Spanning the 2010-12 seasons, the program had a 58-match winning streak.

Lewis-Palmer’s current winning streak sits at 25 matches. In terms of history, it may not yet match the multiyear runs of Evergreen and Chaparral. But, headed by national player of the year candidate Alexa Smith, the Rangers are having an incredibly special season.

Perhaps one of the best ever.

Smoky Hill, Hinkley come together to make a memory

Here’s what high school sports are about: Last week, Smoky Hill and Hinkley lined up before kickoff to give a special needs student Blake Yaw a memory he won’t soon forget.

A four-year manager for the team, he lined up with Smoky’s offense, took a handoff and ran 40 yards for a touchdown through the Hinkley defense, who was in on the moment.

“The entire bench emptied to help celebrate Blake’s touchdown,” athletic director Preston Davis wrote in an email.

    Short stuff

    • The state playoff brackets for five of the seven classes of football come out on Sunday. I’m very interested to see how 5A plays out. This is the first year of a new system which gives the seeding committee to move the qualifiers anywhere on the bracket. At this point, I think Grandview has the inside track at the No. 1 seed, assuming the Wolves beat Valor Christian on Friday. If Valor wins, I expect Ralston Valley to take the top seed — again, assuming a win against Mullen this week.
    • BoCoPreps had a powerful story on how Nederland football is dealing with a severe spinal cord injury to senior Miles Pancoast.
    • Eaglecrest’s Jordyn Poulter is on the same national volleyball player of the year watch list as Alexa Smith. It was produced by MaxPreps.
    • Ralston Valley’s super athlete Andrew Wingard committed to Wyoming to play football on Tuesday night.
    • Ridge View Academy, a 2A program, forfeit two football wins due to use of an ineligible player. Wins over Manual (Oct. 4) and Denver West (Oct. 11) were forfeit. And, actually, that forfeit win may have guaranteed Manual a playoff spot. Manual moved from No. 15 to No. 9 in the Wild Card points standings as a result.
    • The football and basketball championships are moving to Altitude TV.
    • When La Junta won the 3A softball championship on Saturday, it ended Strasburg’s 51-game winning streak in the title game.
    • Eaton raised $2,200 in its Kills for a Cure night earlier this month.
    • Eaglecrest is inducting its inaugural class into its hall of fame in December.
    • There may be a change to CHSAA’s playoff structure coming down the road in the form of an expansion. The staff had some internal discussions last week about exploring the possibility. In essence, it would create true district/regional fields where every team would qualify and then have to play their way into the state tournament. It’s still an idea at this point.
