The Cyclones were edged by Rampart in overtime on Saturday.

Sand Creek jumped three spots from the previous rankings to come in at No. 3.

Northridge (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) are the two new teams to the 4A rankings.

Despite a 16-point loss to Rampart on Friday, Colorado Springs Christian remains the top team in the 3A poll. Resurrection Christian maintains its spot at No. 2 and Manitou Springs holds firm at No. 3.

Overall, the top seven teams from the previous rankings went unchanged.

DSST-Green Valley Ranch (No. 8) and Basalt (No. 10) are the two new teams to break into the 3A rankings this week.

At 7-0, Sedgwick County remains the No. 1 team in 2A. Like the 3A rankings, the top seven teams in 2A are unchanged from the previous rankings.

Fowler jumped two spots to land at No. 8 this week while Sargent (No. 9) and Hotchkiss (No. 10) are the 2A newcomers.

Holly received seven of 10 first-place votes to hold on to the top spot in 1A.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Three teams take over as new No. 1s

    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

It’s still early in the 2016-17 boys basketball season, but George Washington has already made some impressive moves.

The Patriots come in as the new No. 1 team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings. In the two weeks since the release of the preseason rankings, they have gone 5-0 which included a three-point win over No. 2 Rock Canyon and a 13-point win over defending state champion Overland.

With a five-point loss to Rock Canyon, preseason No. 1 Eaglecrest falls to No. 5.

Grandview jumped two spots to land at No. 7 while Smoky Hill (No. 8) and Chatfield (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 5A poll.

A 3-0 record over the first week and a half of the season has kept Pueblo West as the No. 1 team in 4A.

Valor Christian also holds tight at N0. 2, despite a season-opening loss to 5A No. 9 Doherty.

Vista PEAK has looked good early in the year, starting with a 6-0 run to start the season. The Bison made a five-spot jump to come in at No. 4 this week.

Lewis-Palmer is the only new team to the 4A rankings, coming in at No. 10.

Colorado Springs Christian holds its spot as the No. 1 team in 3A. Resurrection Christian jumped five spots to come in at No. 2. Manitou Springs (No. 3) and Alamosa (No. 4) each moved up two spots from the preseason rankings.

At No. 7 and No. 10 respectively, Frontier Academy and Kent Denver are the two new teams to the 3A rankings.

Sedgwick County takes over as the No. 1 team in the 2A poll after Sanford’s 74-game winning streak came to an end last week.

The Indians now sit at No. 6.

There was a high turnover rate in the 2A rankings as four new teams broke into the poll this week.

Akron comes in at No. 4, Del Norte lands at No. 5, Dayspring Christian sits at No. 7 and Peyton breaks in at No. 9.

Starting 5-0 has meant good things for Holly, the No. 1 team in 1A this week.

The Wildcats snagged six firs-place votes in the process.

Like the 2A poll, there was significant turnover in 1A this week.

Weldon Valley (No. 3), Eads (No. 7), Peetz (No. 9) and Sangre de Cristo (No. 10) are all newcomers to the rankings.

Fleming, who came in as the preseason No. 1 comes in at No. 6 this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Four of five defending champions head preseason polls

    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

For the most part, the defending state champions come into the 2016-17 basketball season as the big dogs in the yard.

Pueblo West, Colorado Springs Christian, Sanford and Fleming all took the top spot in their respective CHSAANow.com preseason basketball polls.

The only defending champion to not hold the top spot is Overland, which did not make the top 10 in the Class 5A rankings.

The top spot in that class goes to Eaglecrest, which finished runner-up last season. Colbey Ross will be back for his senior season and will look to lead the Raptors to another state title.

Rock Canyon (No. 2), Denver East (No. 3), ThunderRidge (No. 4) all got first-place votes to start the season.

    Pueblo West boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

In 4A, the two teams that ended last season all top will start this season in the same position. Pueblo West holds the top spot in 4A with Valor Christian nipping at the heels of the Cyclones at No. 2.

Pueblo West came away with a 70-51 win over the Eagles to take the state championship. David Simental returns for his senior season at Pueblo West and is looking to turn heads as he did in last year’s state tournament.

He’d also like to win a second-straight title for the Cyclones.

Colorado Springs Christian takes the No. 1 spot in 3A after winning it’s second-straight championship. The Lions lose big man Sam Howard, but guard Justin Engesser does return for his senior year.

After winning its third-straight title last year, Sanford comes into the season as the No. 1 team in 2A and is just one win away from history.

If the Indians win their season opener, they will set the record for most consecutive wins in state history. They currently sit tied with Ridgway, who won 73 straight games from 1993-96.

After missing out on the 2015 state title by a point, Fleming rebounded to capture last year’s 1A championship and will start the season at No. 1 as a result.

The boys basketball regular season begins Nov. 30.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Update, 12:09 p.m.: After the seeding committee left, there was an issue with the 3A bracket that needs to be verified. That bracket will be posted on Monday by noon. The 32 qualifiers remain the same.

AURORA — Boys soccer’s state tournament brackets were released on Sunday, and Denver East (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Kent Denver (3A) are the top seeds.

The complete brackets are available here:

The 32-team fields in each classification were determined by automatic qualifiers laid out in the soccer bulletin, as well as the final RPI standings, which came out Sunday morning.

Early dates vary for each field, but all quarterfinals are Nov. 5, and semifinals will be Nov. 9. The championship games are set for Nov. 12 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Unbeaten Denver East (15-0-0) heads the 5A field, and will host No. 32 Monarch in the first round. Other high seeds include No. 2 Boulder, No. 3 Cherry Creek, No. 4 Broomfield, No. 5 Fairview, No. 6 Arapahoe, No. 7 Grandview and No. 8 Fort Collins.

The 5A tournament begins on Thursday, with the second round next Wednesday.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain returns to No. 1 in 4A

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

A week after falling out of the top spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, Cheyenne Mountain is back at No. 1.

With a 3-0 win over Air Academy last week, the Indians clinched the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference title and look to be the team to beat as the regular season comes to a close this week.

The Classical Academy, who sat atop the rankings last week, drop only to No. 2.

Thanks a recent tie with Cheyenne Mountain and a win last week over Lewis-Palmer, Palmer Ridge cracks the 4A rankings at No. 7 this week.

Boulder won both its games last week and remains undefeated on the year, giving voters plenty of reasons to keep them at the No. 1 spot in 5A.

Denver East and Broomfield also held firm at No. 2 and No. 3.

Fort Collins made a two-spot jump to No. 8 while Arapahoe (No. 9) and Ralston Valley (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 5A poll.

Kent Denver is still the No. 1 team in 3A with KIPP, Vail Mountain and Jefferson Academy hanging on to their spots at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

DSST-Stapleton, the lone newcomer in the 3A rankings — lands at No. 6.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • 3A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Manual roars into Final 4

DENVER – Manual basketball is back.

The premier Colorado high school basketball program of the 1960s and ’70s, the team fell on hard times when Denver Public Schools shut the school down.

The Thunderbolts brought pride back to the program on Thursday, defeating Colorado Academy 70-66 at the Denver Coliseum in the Class 3A Great 8.

Colorado Academy had beaten Manual twice during the regular season, by 30 and 12 points. The difference Thursday, according to freshman Jadedon Bradley, was effort.

“They know what’s up,” T-Bolts coach Anson Ramiro said. “It’s been a roller-coaster ride, shutting down the school.”

The players, only one of which is a senior, understand the importance of Manual basketball to the community.

The Thunderbolts went on a 23-point scoring splurge in the second quarter to overtake the Mustangs 38-29 at half.

Colorado Academy answered by outscoring the T-Bolts 17-2 through the first half of the third quarter, but Manual closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run to retake the lead 49-48 entering the fourth.

The Mustangs pulled to within three twice but the Bolts hit the offensive boards and got free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Bradley finished with 26 points to lead all scorers.

“We’re trying to get Manual back on top,” he said.

As for Ramiro, he believes in his young team.

    “We’re changing history,” he vowed.

Alamosa, however, pulled off the upset of the day to open the 3A boys state basketball tournament on Thursday.

The Mean Moose outscored top-seeded Denver School of Science and Technology-Stapleton in overtime to overtake the Knights 73-70.

Alamosa put on a furious fourth-quarter rally, scoring 29 points to tie the game at the end of regulation.

The Mean Moose spread the wealth with six players scoring at least eight points, Ryan Brubacher leading the way with 19.

DSST got a monster game from Blake Pullen, who led all scorers with 26.

Lutheran got on top of Grand Valley early in defeating the Cardinals 66-55.

A balanced scoring effort saw Will Willis lead the way with 19 points; Josh Bjorgum added 18 and Tanner Rich 14.

Grand Valley got 13 apiece from John Parker and Tanner Magee.

Colorado Springs Christian upended third seed Manitou Springs 48-41.

The Mustangs held the lead through most of the first half until a late surge gave the Lions an 18-16 halftime lead.

CSC extended its lead in the third quarter and went up 35-25 a half-minute into the fourth, but Manitou quickly pulled to within three before a couple of clutch baskets sealed the win for CSC.

It was the Lions’ second victory over Manitou this season.

“It was very similar to the first time we played them (a 47-36 CSC win),” Lions coach Mark Engesser said of the Mustangs grabbing a lead and CSC coming back just before the half.

Engesser’s son Justin, a junior forward, said it was a matter of he and his teammates adapting to a state tournament atmosphere.

“It was just settling in and adjusting to what they were doing,” said the younger Engesser, who tied for team-high scoring honors with Samuel Howard; each had 14 points.

The Mustangs’ Cole Sienknecht led all scorers with 15.

Grand Valley and Manitou Springs play a consolation game at 10:15 a.m. Friday, followed by DSST and Colorado Academy at 1:30 p.m.

In the semifinals, Alamosa and Manual meet at 5:30. The last game of the day at 8:30 features Lutheran and Colorado Springs Christian.
