Veteran Pine Creek boys basketball team seeing benefits of hard work

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) FOUNTAIN — Ever since Peyton Westfall and the other 10 seniors on the Pine Creek boys basketball roster were in middle school, they’ve felt like they could turn the program around.
A far cry from their football counterpoints, the Eagles basketball squad has struggled for several years on the hardwood. The 2018-19 season marked the first time that coach Joe Rausch led the Eagles to winning season since he took the program over in 2014.
After Saturday’s 70-58 win over Fountain-Fort Carson, the Eagles (6-1 overall, 1-0 Class 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) feel like a league title might be in play. It’s a completely different outlook from where this team sat just two years ago.
“Our focus is just trying to get better each practice and each game,” Rausch said. “We may have set some goals the last couple of years where once we knew we couldn’t achieve a certain goal, then we kind of maybe lost a little focus. We’re just trying to get better every single game and I think they’ve really embraced that and they’re doing a good job.”
The roster makeup for the Eagles lists 11 seniors and one junior. After suffering through several disappointing seasons, it’s a veteran group that takes the floor each game and that experience certainly showed against the defending 5A CSML champs.
Westfall scored 14 points in the win, with all but three of his points coming in the second half. That’s when they were needed the most.
“We all knew that we were going to do this,” he said. “We all knew we were going to do this together. And that’s what (Rausch) asked us at the start of the season is do we want to do it together? And we said yeah.”
Rausch couldn’t talk for long before pointing out his team’s toughness in the win. The Trojans (6-5, 0-1) went with a simple plan of attack early. Get the ball to 6-foot-9 Isaiah Thompson and let him work in the post. On the first two possessions of the game he had been fouled twice and sank all of his free throws. The Eagles were going to have their work cut out for them on the inside, but they were up to the tough challenge.
They limited Thompson to just two field made field goals. He scored the other eight of his 12 points from the free throw line.
“I think the biggest thing is we stopped moving the ball,” Trojans coach Paul Mileto said. “The ball stayed on one side before pretty much every possession and it’s hard to score. It’s hard to move the defense.”

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) It was the mark of a veteran team. Thompson was by far the biggest player on the floor and the Eagles had to find a way to counter his presence in the lane. Keeping Fountain Fort-Carson from effectively moving the ball turned out to be a solid game plan.
And it was backed up with plenty of offense. Perry Guirdy scored a game-high 18 points for the Eagles. He has struggled at times this season, but he’s kept his head down and just tried to put himself in the right spots at the right time.
“That’s usually how I play,” Guirdy said. “I usually go to the one open spot that I see and our guards did a great job of giving me the ball.”
The win is sure to get the attention of teams from across the league. Guirdy said that it might serve the Eagles better to stay under the radar, but knocking off the Trojans on the road is sure to get noticed.
If it is indeed the Eagles’ time to make noise in the CSML, Rausch is hoping that this senior-laden team is ready for it.
“It would have been a victory to come out of here even if we didn’t win the game with how tough we played today,” Rausch siad. “But yeah, it’s huge way to start off the league season just because Fountain is the team to beat; league champs and so it still goes through them until they don’t have it anymore.”

All-state football teams for the 2019 season
The 2019 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

No. 9 Cherokee Trail football strikes fast to beat No. 24 Fountain-Fort Carson in 5A playoffs

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) AURORA — Two touchdowns in less than four minutes in the second quarter pretty much summed up the quick-strike ability of Cherokee Trail.
In a first-round game of the Class 5A state football playoffs, the No. 9 Cougars displayed the versatile offense they’ve touted all year and beat No. 24 Fountain-Fort Carson 35-17 at Legacy Stadium.
The Trojans (3-8 overall) won the opening coin toss and decided to put the ball in the hands of Jayden Lavigne and the Cougars offense.
And that was fine with the home team. In just over four minutes, the Cougars (8-3) marched down the field and punched the ball in the end zone on an eight-yard run from Julian Williams, his first of four touchdown runs on the night.
“We didn’t want to overlook this game,” Williams said. “If we do, it could be our last game of the season so we were focused and determined.”

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) FFC’s offense started a tad timid on its opening drive, but after getting new life thanks to a couple of penalties, found themselves in the red zone with a chance to even the score.
But the Cougars’ defense clamped down and the Trojans had to settle for a 33-yard field goal from Gaheris Owen.
Cherokee Trail was fine giving up field goals as long as they were scoring touchdowns. Williams scored his second touchdown of the night to increase the lead to 14-3 and four minutes later, Lavigne found Kaden Bing for a 29-yard touchdown pass.
The Trojans had one more shot to get on the board before halftime, but after reaching the red zone, the offense again stalled.
Owen attempted his second field goal of the night from 27 yards away, but pushed it just right of his target.
“Against a good team like that, you can’t get behind them,” FFC coach Jake Novotny said.
In the second half, the Cougars picked up right where they left off. Williams found the end zone two more times to bring his total to four on the night.
“The running game is always important,” Williams said. “I’m happy I was able to contribute to the running game tonight. The passing game was on too. I just got down there and ran in a few short ones.”
Late in the third quarter and into the fourth, the Trojans put together their best drive of the game and finally found some much-needed offensive rhythm.
The drive was capped with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Price to Treshawn Taylor. Price added a 54-yard touchdown toss to Kobe Hardin before the game ended, as the Trojans did their best to battle to the end.
“It’s what we teach them every day,” Novotny said. “Never quit. Never give up. This has been a season that’s been tough a little bit and they’ve been doing that all year and I’m proud of them.
Cherokee Trail now has the task of slowing down Fairview quarterback Aidan Atkinson in next week’s matchup. Cougars coach Joe Johnson has been doing this a long time so he knows that even though playoff wins are nice and well-earned, they’ll come to an end if the work for the next one doesn’t begin right away.
“We’ll get right to work on Sunday,” he said.
It’s all he needed to say. He has no intention of letting his season end earlier than it needs to so he and the Cougars have no time around and wait. They’re ready to go right back to work.
