  • Football roundup: Smoky Hill coach Tom Thenell wins No. 200; top-10 matchups around the state

    Smoky Hill football coach Tom Thenell won the 200th game of his career on Friday night when his Buffaloes beat Adams City.

    Thenell, who has also coached at Bear Creek and Mullen, is now 200-112 in his career, which began in 1992.

    Smoky Hill, now 8-0 this season, beat Adams City 51-7. In two years at Smoky, Thenell is 18-1 at a program that hadn’t won more than four games from 2007-2017.

    The Buffaloes are now also 7-0 in the Metro 10 League with two games to play. But with wins over both Prairie View and Far Northeast, who are 5-2 in league play, Smoky Hill has clinched the league title, assuring themselves of a second-straight playoff berth.

    2A: (2) Sterling 24, (3) Platte Valley 6

    Sterling jumped out with two quick touchdowns, including a fumble return for a score, in the first quarter, and turned that momentum into a huge win.

    “We knew coming in all week who the opponent was and what was at stake tonight,” Sterling coach Rob Busmente told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Our kids did a great job during the week of preping during practice.”

    Busmente added that the game was “from start to finish, probably one of our most complete games that we’ve played this season.”

    Of the two early touchdowns he said: “Jumping out fast and creating some momentum early was a positive, and we were able to maintain that level through the rest of the game.”

    Sterling is now 6-1, with the lone loss coming out-of-state to Scottsbluff, Neb. The Tigers are in first place in the Patriot East at 3-0.

    Cherry Creek made a statement with a huge top-10 win in the tough Metro East League.

    The Bruins built a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, and only continued to extend their lead in the second half.

    Julian Hammond III threw two touchdown passes for the Bruins, who also got rushing touchdowns from James Walker II and Jayle Stacks. Chase Penry and Connor Page had receiving touchdowns.

    With the win, Cherry Creek pushed its record to 8-0 overall, and 3-0 as the lone remaining unbeaten in the Metro East.

    2A: (5) Delta 35, (7) Basalt 6

    It was all Delta as the Panthers raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead en route to the big win.

    Brandon Butler had two rushing scores in the win, and Nolan Bynum rushed for a score and passed for another.

    Delta is now 6-1 this season, including 2-1 in the 2A Western Slope League.

    6-man: (2) Fleming 63, (9) Briggsdale 14

    Fleming locked up the North League championship with the big win.

    “Especially the second half, we just started executing well,” Fleming coach John King told the Scoreboard Show. “Sticking with our blocks longer, and people on the back side, really trying to work hard and take their angles. It just kinda started clicking.

    “We kind of wore them down a little bit,” King added. “We have really good depth this year for 6-man.”

    Fleming is now 8-0 overall, and 5-0 in the North.

    • In 8-man, Sargent upset Dove Creek 26-24.
    • Lamar beat La Junta in the Whistle Game for the first time since 2014 with a 20-14 win.

  • Football roundup: Alamosa knocks off No. 1 La Junta in 2A

    Alamosa and new coach Drew Sandlin have a signature win early in the 2019 season.

    The Mean Moose knocked off defending Class 2A champion and top-ranked La Junta 22-6, on the road, no less. It put an end to La Junta’s 14-game winning streak, which had been tied for the longest in the state.

    Alamosa led 7-0 at the half, and pushed it to 14-0 midway through the third. La Junta returned an interception for a score later in that quarter, but then Alamosa scored again, securing the win.

    8-man: (5) Mancos 48, (3) Merino 34

    Trailing 8-0 after the first quarter, Mancos rallied to score 18 consecutive points in the second quarter to build a lead. The Bluejays continued the momentum in the third quarter, and ultimately fended off a late rally to secure the top-5 win.

    “We made a lot of mistakes in the beginning,” Mancos coach Josh Gardner told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “And one of the messages I was trying to get to our boys last night at the hotel, and today, was you’re going to make mistakes, but you have to forget about it, you have to move on. And so at halftime, we just kind of sat together and talked about it. We said, ‘Hey, you made mistakes, that’s ok. You’ve got to forget about it, and you’ve got to move on.’ And I think that was the difference. We were able to move on from those big mistakes.”

    Chase Moore had three rushing touchdowns, including a 52-yard score in the second quarter which got the scoring started for Mancos, and a 39-yarder early in the third quarter that made it 24-16.

    Anthony Medina had two rushing scores, while Breccen Morelli had a score through the air and on the ground.

    Mancos pushed its lead to 34-16 as the fourth quarter started. Two quick touchdowns from Merino made it 34-28. Morelli threw a 74-yard touchdown with four minutes to play to put Mancos back up two scores, but Merino responded with a score with less than two minutes to play, making it 40-34.

    Medina then added his second rushing score, a 57-yarder, in the final minute to make it 48-34.

    “It was pretty crazy,” Gardner said. “Merino was a hard-fighting team, and they just could not let us get any distance. They fought real hard, we fought real hard, and yeah, it was a little wild and crazy at the end.”

    Mancos is now 2-0 this season.

    “We’re trying to change the mentality of our program,” Gardner said. “We’re trying to be as confident as we can be. We’re trying to just play with a positive attitude, and just keep our spirits high, and you’ve just got to forget when you make mistakes because everyone makes mistakes.”

    3A: Frederick 21, (7) Erie 20

    Frederick won its rivalry contest against No. 7 Erie thanks to this stop of a two-point conversion attempt:

    Frederick coach Travis Peeples told the Scoreboard Show that it was “a great night to be here. A great win.”

    The Warriors, now 2-0, were led by quarterback Jake Green.

    “He kind of took the game over,” Peeples said. “He was a big difference tonight in getting us the win.”

    Of the late two-point conversion stop, Peeples said: “We kinda were ready for what they were going to do, and we prepared all week for it. … It was exhilarating. The crowd, it was a packed house, and it was just an unbelievable win. Our kids kinda willed themselves to win the game. They wanted this really bad for our community and our school.”

    3A: (4) Green Mountain 28, (2) Palisade 14

    Green Mountain quarterback Trey Towndrow threw four touchdown passes, two each in the first and third quarters, as the Rams went on the road to secure a big win.

    “It was a great win, a great battle,” Green Mountain coach Jesse German told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids, they just hung in there and they just kept fighting.”

    Palisade tried to rally late, but Green Mountain wouldn’t let the Bulldogs get back in the game.

    “Huge win for us,” German said. “Super proud of our boys just to keep fighting and finishing that game.”

    On Towndrow, German added: “He’s one of the top quarterbacks in the state, and really one of the top athletes in the state. I think he’s a game-changer for us.”

    3A/4A: Sand Creek 21, Cheyenne Mountain 6

    Following this win over Cheyenne Mountain, Sand Creek has matched its win total of the the previous four seasons combined.

    The Scorpions, led by first-year coach James Everett, are 2-0 for the first time since 2013.

    “This is exciting, man,” Everett told the Scoreboard Show. “The school is behind us, the community is behind us. We had a packed house tonight. we had guys outside of the gate watching the game. It was a nice atmosphere to be in tonight.”

    • As they celebrate their 100th season, 1A No. 1 Limon opened a new football stadium and pressbox on Friday night. They beat Crowley County 46-7:

    • In 1A, Pagosa Springs knocked off No. 5 Centauri 28-20.
    • 4A No. 8 Ponderosa also made a stop on a two-point conversion attempt to seal the top-10 win at the end of the game, beating No. 10 Windsor 24-23.
    • An upset in 6-man, where Granada knocked off No. 8 Eads 54-46. “It was a hard-fought victory,” coach Manuel Gonzales Jr. told the Scoreboard Show. “We had just enough in the tank to pull it out.”
    • Top-10 matchup in 6-man: No. 2 Fleming 55, No. 7 Peetz 18.
    • Another top-10 game in 6-man: No. 6 Prairie 48, No. 10 Briggsdale 28.
    • 5A Arapahoe won the Milk Jug against rival 4A No. 9 Heritage, 9-7. Photos from that game are here.
    • Longmont beat Fort Collins in overtime with a stop on a two-point attempt. The Trojans won, 36-34. Sage Yazzie had five total touchdowns.
    • 5A No. 2 Cherry Creek won its annual rivalry game with Mullen, 34-0. Here’s a photo gallery.
    • Woodland Park ended a 13-game losing streak by beating Sierra 51-0.
    • Liberty football went 0-10 last season, and has now started 2-0 after being Pueblo Centennial 21-8. It’s the program’s first 2-0 start since 2015.

  • Fairview, Palisade and Pueblo East among football teams with returning offensive stars

    The start of football season in Colorado is just two short weeks away. With some players having graduated and moved on from every team, a new set of standout student-athletes will be in the spotlight in 2019.

    But there are plenty of players coming back this season and with them come numbers that were impressive even a year ago.

    Looking at the offensive side of the ball, there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the start of football season in 2019.

    Passing:

    When it comes to passing stats, Fairview quarterback Aidan Atkinson led the way for all quarterbacks in 2018. The senior to be threw for a staggering 3,952 yards last year. It was a record-setting year all the way around for him and the Knights.

    For comparison, Highlands Ranch quarterback Jake Rubley threw for 1,951 yards and comes into the season No. 2 behind Atkinson in returning passing yards.

    The top-three passers in 4A all return in 2019 making the prospect of an aerial battle late in the season very intriguing.

    Skyline’s Chase Silva threw for 2,829 yards as he helped the Falcons reach the 4A championship game. Centaurus’ Nick Faraca threw for 2,436 yards with Grand Junction Central’s Max Marsh threw for 2,296. The combination of Marsh and LSU football commit Kole Taylor is going to be a major attraction on the Western Slope this fall.

    The top five passers from 3A all graduated a year ago making George Washington’s Jaydon Green the top returning passer in the class as he threw for 1,722. Pueblo South’s Logan Petit (1,581 yards) and Durango’s Jordan Woolverton (1,560 yards) are other 3A names to keep an eye on.

    Aspen’s Tyler Ward led 2A with 2,202 yards last year and will be back as a junior in 2019 as will Meeker’s Ryan Phelan who topped all 1A passers with 1,869 in 2018.

    Front Range Christian’s Luke Hiltman led all 8-man passers with 2,079 yards and will be back this fall. Briggsdale senior Tyler Blickem returns with 2,368 passing yards from last year which topped all of 6-man.

    Granada sophomore Dominic Coleman got the attention of the class by throwing for 1,609 yards as a freshman.

    In terms of touchdowns, Atkinson set the standard state-wide with 55. Blickem threw for 36 and Silva connected on 30 touchdown passes.

    Rushing:

    The ground attack throughout the state lost a lot of spild performers from last year. Smoky Hill’s Obasanjo Sanni returns as the top returning rusher as he cleared the 2,000-yard mark last year and averaged 181 yards per game.

    Legacy’s Dakota Key (1,799) and Fountain-Fort Carson’s Q. Jones (1,406) round out 5A’s top three returning rushers.

    There were standout runners from 3A that are also making their way back this year. Palisade’s Cam Tucker ran for 1,662 and Thomas Jefferson’s Daveon Hunter ran for 1,410 yards in nine games.

    In 4A, the top two returners both come out of Academy District 20 as Pine Creek’s David Moore III returns with 1,494 yards from last year. Down the road at Rampart, Chris Yoo totaled 1,317 yards and both backs will be seniors this fall.

    The biggest loss of production on the ground comes in 2A where 10 of the top 12 rushers from last year were seniors. Coming into this season, just Brush’s Nick Wellen (1,250) and Bishop Machebeuf’s Darius Richards (1,012) return with over 1,000 rushing yards from last year.

    That’s a big difference in 1A where the top two rushers from 2018 will be back as seniors this fall. Colorado Springs Christian senior Peyton Brones led all of 1A with 1,724 yards last year while Monte Vista’s Kaidon Wenta sat right behind him on the leaderboard with 1,475.

    Dove Creek’s Chorbin Cressler broke into the top five of all 8-man rushers as just a freshman last year with 1,243 yards and will look to build on that momentum this season. Pikes Peak Christian’s Hudson Grant is 8-man’s No. 2 returning rusher with 1,188 yards in 2018.

    Tucker returns with the most rushing touchdowns from last year with 28. Stratton/Liberty’s Jaret Lichty ran for 27 and Brones punched the ball in 24 times.

    Receiving

    Losing Kain Medrano was always going to be a big deal for Pueblo East. But if there is a silver lining, it’s that Marvon London, Jr. appears ready to fill the void.

    The senior receiver for the Eagles amassed more receiving yards than any other player returning in 2019. His 1,083 yards were seventh in the state last fall and with Medrano gone, the number has a chance of increasing this season.

    Palmer Ridge’s Deuce Roberson (937) and Harrison’s Seth Fuller (928) are the other top 3A receivers coming back.

    Fairview’s Henry Blackburn hauled 890 receiving yards to lead all 5A returners and should thrive again with Atkinson still tossing passes for the Knights.

    Heritage junior Terrance Ferguson totaled 972 receiving yards making him the top returning 4A receiver this season.

    Two of last season’s top three receivers will be back in 2A. Aspen’s Max Ufkes led the class with 920 receiving yards and Englewood’s Nate Gravagno ranked third with 824.

    As much as 1A had coming back in terms of rushing production, that is not the case with receiving. Estes Park sophomore Calum Torrey had 442 receiving yards last year which is the most for anyone who was not a senior.

    Sangre de Cristo’s Mario Enriquez leds all 8-man returners with 594 yards while Deer Trail’s Dayne Woodis comes back with 730 yards which was second in 6-man last year.

    Blackburn returns with the most receiving touchdowns form last year with 17. Woodis and Roberson each hauled in 11 touchdown catches last year.

    The 2019 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.
